- Chapter 34 (An Unexpected Turn)
An unexpected change!
The original plan for the next day was to inspect the sample garments at the factory in the morning. However, by noon, Jiang Fenyun suddenly had a social engagement and insisted that Jiang Nian accompany her.
The meeting involved a senior official and concerned the latest market updates. After thinking it over, Jiang Nian realized it was important and agreed to attend. She had her assistant contact Bai Ye to move the inspection to the afternoon, and Qiao Wenyu was also notified of the change.
At the lunch engagement, Jiang Nian ended up drinking quite a bit. Jiang Fenyun wasn’t feeling well and couldn’t drink, so all the social drinking fell to Jiang Nian.
By the time it ended, Jiang Nian was noticeably sluggish. She wasn’t drunk to the point of incoherence but was definitely not clear-headed. She decided to return to the office for a short rest before heading to the factory.
After a nap, most of the alcohol had worn off, though she still didn’t feel well enough to drive. She called Lu Renbing to come along and help with the driving.
“President Jiang, I’ll reschedule a driver for Miss Qiao,” Lu Renbing said. Originally, he had planned to pick up Qiao Wenyu himself, but since the boss personally asked him to drive, he had no choice but to assign someone else.
While calling to arrange the driver, the regular chauffeur had an emergency and couldn’t make it. Instead, he recommended a new driver. Without thinking too much, Lu Renbing agreed.
Once everything was arranged, Jiang Nian set off for the garment factory.
This factory was located in a rather remote area — right near the border of the neighboring city, even farther than the outskirts.
Jiang Nian sat in the back seat with her eyes closed, trying to rest. By the time she felt recovered, they had just arrived at their destination.
Due to the long journey, they reached the factory near closing time.
The factory manager, a short and plump middle-aged male beta, greeted her enthusiastically. “Ah, President Jiang! You’re here. President Bai and Miss Qiao just arrived a short while ago — they’re inside waiting.”
“Sorry for the delay,” Jiang Nian replied with a polite smile.
Following the manager inside, Jiang Nian saw Bai Ye examining the fabric and craftsmanship of the samples, while Qiao Wenyu was chatting with the designers.
“Wenyu, President Bai,” Jiang Nian greeted.
Qiao Wenyu turned around and gave a faint smile. “Xiao Nian.”
“You’re late,” Bai Ye remarked bluntly. She had a strong dislike for tardiness, and it showed in her tone.
“Had a few too many drinks at lunch. I waited until I sobered up a bit before coming. Didn’t want to risk missing anything important during the inspection,” Jiang Nian explained apologetically.
“Hmph,” Bai Ye snorted, unimpressed.
The plump manager stood between them and began explaining the samples, detailing everything from materials to craftsmanship, occasionally offering suggestions for improvement.
“The craftsmanship is generally fine, but the hem needs adjustment,” Bai Ye said after a thorough look. “I just had a video call with the designer. We both feel the current look is too stiff — we need something more natural.”
It was the most Jiang Nian had ever heard Bai Ye speak in one sitting.
Qiao Wenyu listened attentively and occasionally raised questions about pricing, adjusting based on current market trends.
Jiang Nian stood silently nearby, unable to join the discussion. She felt completely out of place — whether in terms of expertise or business acumen, she couldn’t match either of them. All she could do was listen.
By the time everything was settled, she hadn’t said more than a few sentences.
As they exited the factory, Bai Ye scoffed at her. “What’s the matter? Couldn’t get a word in edgewise?”
Jiang Nian didn’t respond. She honestly didn’t know what to say. Professionally, she was outclassed by both women. Bai Ye wasn’t wrong to criticize her.
“It’s fine as long as the samples are confirmed,” Qiao Wenyu stepped in to smooth things over. “No need to fuss over everything.”
“I’m off. Got other matters tonight,” Bai Ye said and turned to leave after Qiao Wenyu spoke.
Qiao Wenyu also seemed ready to go, but she suddenly patted her pockets and frowned. “I left my phone inside. I’ll go back and get it.”
Jiang Nian’s car was already pulled up at the roadside, but hearing that Qiao Wenyu was going back inside, she didn’t get in. She waited where she was.
Despite having said she was in a hurry, Bai Ye also stayed. Clearly, she too wanted to leave together with Qiao Wenyu.
“You’re not leaving? Thought you had something urgent,” Jiang Nian asked casually.
Bai Ye gave a cold laugh. “Aren’t you still here too?”
The two locked eyes, exchanging silent glares. Neither was willing to back down.
Five minutes passed. Then ten. Still, Qiao Wenyu hadn’t come out. By now, most of the factory employees had already clocked out and left.
Jiang Nian began to worry before Bai Ye did. She walked closer to the entrance.
Still no sign of Qiao Wenyu.
Even Bai Ye, who had remained outside, started to sense something was off. She followed Jiang Nian into the factory.
“There!” Jiang Nian spotted a shadow moving — short and stocky — and it looked like the person was carrying someone on their back.
Bai Ye held Jiang Nian back and shook her head. “Wait. Look outside. Isn’t that Xiao Yu’s car? Why did it leave already?”
“Follow them!” Jiang Nian shouted, running back to the factory gate.
“Call the police first!” Bai Ye called out. But by the time she finished speaking, Jiang Nian had already dashed off. Bai Ye paused to compose herself, then pulled out her phone to report the incident.
Meanwhile, Jiang Nian climbed into the car and shouted at Lu Renbing, flustered, “Follow Wenyu’s car — now!”
“But President Jiang,” Lu Renbing explained, “I arranged that driver myself. He’s new, but I don’t think he would harm Miss Qiao.”
“A new driver? Damn it — go! Hurry!” Jiang Nian was in a complete panic, like an ant on a hot pan.
Lu Renbing started the car and sped off.
A short while later, the car carrying Qiao Wenyu veered off onto a narrow, wooded path.
As they entered a densely forested area, visibility dropped sharply. The terrain slowed them down, and soon the car ahead disappeared from sight entirely.
Undeterred, Lu Renbing continued to drive, scanning for any sign of the vehicle.
Eventually, they found it — Qiao Wenyu’s car parked beneath a dilapidated building, overgrown with weeds and surrounded by a foul, musty smell.
“Wenyu! Wenyu!” Jiang Nian jumped out and shouted, calling out desperately.
Lu Renbing followed close behind, both of them calling Qiao Wenyu’s name through the quiet gloom.
“They couldn’t have gone far. They must be inside this building,” Jiang Nian concluded.
The area had been abandoned for years, making it even harder to search. Now that the sun had set, visibility dropped further. Jiang Nian used her phone’s flashlight to illuminate the narrow path ahead.
“Lu Renbing, go back and get Bai Ye. Tell her to bring people — quickly,” Jiang Nian ordered.
The assistant hesitated. “President Jiang, it’s too dangerous for you to stay here alone. That’s not—”
“Just go! If we waste more time, things could get worse!” Jiang Nian gripped his shoulder, her tone firm. “I’ll be fine. I won’t let anything happen to me — not until I find Wenyu.”
Left with no other choice, and seeing how dire the situation was, Lu Renbing finally agreed. As he left, he turned back with each step. “President Jiang, please be careful. I’ll bring help right away.”
Now with only her own phone’s dim light, Jiang Nian found it even harder to see. She moved carefully up the crumbling staircase inside the derelict building.
Rusting screws, rotting railings, and wild overgrowth creaked and groaned beneath each step. Every footfall sounded like it might be her last.
She furrowed her brow and cautiously climbed higher, calling out as she went.
“Wenyu! Wenyu! Qiao Wenyu!” Jiang Nian shouted, refusing to stop.
The building was full of rooms — too many to search one by one. And unless the kidnapper showed themselves, finding Qiao Wenyu would be next to impossible.
But she knew yelling might not be wise. The enemy was hidden in the dark, and she could easily be ambushed.
Still, Jiang Nian refused to give up. She’d rather face the danger herself than leave Qiao Wenyu to endure it alone.
“Wenyu! Don’t be afraid. I’m here!” she cried out again and again.
In a room deep within the abandoned building, Qiao Wenyu slowly regained consciousness. Her wrists and ankles were bound, her mouth sealed with black tape, her eyes covered by a blindfold.
She remembered someone spraying something in her face — not a heavy dose, which is why she woke relatively quickly. But waking up in such complete darkness was terrifying, even for someone who had faced more hopeless moments in life.
The fear gripped her again — until she heard Jiang Nian’s voice.
“Mmmph! Mmm-mmmph!” Qiao Wenyu began struggling fiercely, trying to make any noise she could.
But in the next moment, a hand clamped over her.
A chillingly familiar voice whispered in the dark, like a ghost:
“Don’t struggle, Wenyu-jie. It’s useless.”
A faint scent of rain-drenched pheromones drifted in the air. Qiao Wenyu’s body trembled — she could feel a pair of cold, invasive hands roaming across her.
“Mmmph! MMMMM!” she resisted with all her strength.
Tong Yunyao giggled in the shadows, her eyes gleaming with madness. She gripped Qiao Wenyu’s neck and hissed like a demon from hell:
“Wenyu-jie, I’m nothing but a mad dog. If the boss hadn’t taken me in, I’d never have had it this good. You live too comfortably… and I can’t stand seeing others happy. And now, with the boss’s orders — I can do anything. Tell me, if someone like me permanently marked you, would you like it?”
Qiao Wenyu froze, her whole body shaking. The fight went out of her.
“Not moving anymore? You must really like it, huh?” Tong Yunyao laughed darkly, tightening her grip on Qiao Wenyu’s neck.
“Let’s play a game. If Jiang Nian calls you three more times… I’ll mark you.”
Outside, Jiang Nian was pacing frantically, shouting as she checked every corridor.
“Wenyu!”
Tong Yunyao raised one finger. “Once.”
“Qiao Wenyu!”
“Twice.”
Tong Yunyao tilted her head back and laughed maniacally. She raised three fingers and began counting slowly, “Three… times.”
“Wenyu-jie, it’s your beloved President Jiang who’s asking me to mark you — not me. I didn’t want this, remember?” she muttered incoherently, fingers fumbling with the buttons at Qiao Wenyu’s collar.
Pop.
The white button flew off and rolled across the damp floor.
Qiao Wenyu’s body trembled, drenched in cold sweat. Even the strongest soul would falter in such a moment of despair.
She was utterly helpless.
Then — just as Tong Yunyao’s damp tongue slid across the skin of her neck — Qiao Wenyu summoned all her strength and released a violent burst of her internal pheromones.
The air filled with the rich, overwhelming scent of roses.
