- Chapter 29 - Save Me! He’s a Human Trafficker
The captain thought to himself, what difference could a broken water pump make even if it was repaired?
Would the water it pumped turn into banknotes?
Judging by the old man’s excitement, it must have become even better.
Not wanting to spoil the mood, he casually remarked, “What would an amateur like me know? All I know is that it’s working now.”
As he spoke, the captain unexpectedly noticed that the pump seemed to be draining water faster.
But he didn’t want to mention it, preferring to let Old Chen stew in his anxiety.
Old Chen nodded excitedly, “Yes, yes, yes! The fact that it’s running is the most obvious improvement. And also…”
Before he could finish, several crew members cheered, “It’s plugged! It’s plugged!”
The captain rushed over, clasping his hands together in relief, “Thank heavens! We can finally make it to the next port.”
The repairman wiped the sweat from his brow, cursing the ruthless pirates under his breath, “Those bastards, heartless scoundrels.
Look at the curled edges of this breach, it’s clear they deliberately rammed the ship when they took control.”
Old Chen crouched down, examining the damaged area repeatedly, “For now, we can only use a collision mat to temporarily seal the leak. Thankfully, the water was drained quickly. Otherwise, with the internal and external water pressure, the ship might not have held up and could have…” He sighed.
“We must thank Comrade Su properly. Huh? Where is Comrade Su?”
“She’s already left,” Nie Ronghua said as he walked in, glancing at the damaged spot before fixing his gaze on the water pump Su Meng had repaired.
He hadn’t expected Su Meng, a delicate young woman, to be capable of repair work.
This was different from what he had previously known about her.
It seemed she wasn’t as spoiled and troublesome as her family had made her out to be.
What he didn’t know was that during his mission, something major had happened in the Su family.
Her so-called family wasn’t truly her family.
A fake father, a stepmother, and an older “stepsister” had taken over her home under the guise of being her relatives.
…
Su Meng had no idea that the man in the white coat was Nie Ronghua.
As she walked back, she did catch a distant glimpse of a man approaching.
But for some reason, she instinctively avoided him, like a mouse avoiding a cat, taking a detour from afar.
The dim evening light gathered from all directions, gradually plunging the world into darkness.
The passenger ship sounded its horn as it docked at a small pier called Fang Village.
An announcement echoed: “The ship will remain docked for repairs for an indefinite period. Passengers are requested to transfer to another vessel.”
Though grumbling, the passengers obediently followed the crew’s instructions and moved to another passenger ship for the sake of safety.
Su Meng closed the window and prepared to disembark.
But in that casual glance, she unexpectedly spotted a familiar petite figure.
If she wasn’t mistaken, it was Mo Xiaoli, Wang Guangming’s fiancée, the girl who had once helped her up in the police station lobby.
She was stepping off a nearby small boat, her expression blank and her movements stiff.
Strangely, she carried nothing with her, not even a small handbag.
Su Meng couldn’t help but take a few more looks.
At the bow of the small boat and along the connected pier, several stern-faced men stood in formation on both sides.
Their eyes were alert and cold.
Those disembarking from the small boat walked obediently through the middle, boarding a larger ship nearby one by one.
Not a single trace of joy could be seen on their faces.
Some stood dazed, others stole hopeful glances around, or… waited for a chance to escape?
The thought abruptly surfaced in Su Meng’s mind, sending a shiver down her spine.
The more she observed, the more she felt something was off about the people disembarking from the small boat.
There was a sense of incongruity.
Unfortunately, the ship they were transferring to happened to be the very one those people from the small boat were boarding.
She had no intention of jumping from the frying pan into the fire right after narrowly escaping death.
The announcement urged them once again to disembark.
Su Meng slung her bag over her shoulder and followed the crowd.
Su Xiaoman stood by the stairs, holding a child’s hand, and smiled at Su Meng as she strode over. “I thought you’d already left. You don’t look well, are you feeling unwell?”
Su Meng shook her head and lowered her voice. “Sister Su, I don’t think that ship is safe. I’m planning to take the train instead.”
When she bought the overpriced boat ticket on the black market, she had also purchased five stamped neighborhood certificates.
With these certificates, she could freely buy train tickets and arrange accommodations.
Su Xiaoman pulled the child closer, covering half her mouth as she asked, “Taking the train will cost you extra, you know. Little Su, is that ship really unsafe? Did you see pirates?”
Su Meng choked back her words!
She couldn’t be certain.
Clearing her throat softly, she said, “I just have my suspicions.”
Su Xiaoman let out a sigh of relief. “Oh my! I thought pirates had returned. Look, everyone’s boarding. Let’s go with them.”
People tend to follow the crowd, and Su Meng didn’t insist on stopping her. “Sister Su, I won’t be going. Goodbye!”
Her intuition told her those people were dangerous.
She didn’t want to take the risk.
Su Xiaoman shook her head and walked away with the child.
Muttering under her breath, she said, “She’s probably just scared out of her wits.”
But no sooner had she spoken than a piercing scream tore through the night.
Su Xiaoman shuddered, immediately retracting her foot. Glancing back, she saw Su Meng already turning to run, clutching the little boy.
“Little Su, wait for me!”
Su Meng turned in surprise to see the mother and child running toward her.
Close behind them was a disheveled woman wearing only one shoe.
Chasing after her was a burly, fierce-looking man.
“Stop! You crazy woman, stop right there!”
Just as the man was about to catch the woman, someone from the roadside blocked his path. “Comrade, how can you bully a woman?”
Another voice shouted, “Call the police! There are officers on the ship!”
The man, holding the woman’s other shoe in one hand, pointed at her with the other and explained to the crowd, “Forgive the spectacle, everyone! She’s my wife. She’s had a bit of a shock and isn’t thinking clearly. I heard the hospitals in Yangcheng have excellent doctors, so I’m taking her for treatment. Please don’t misunderstand.”
Hearing this, the crowd nodded in understanding.
“So, they’re husband and wife! These kinds of issues should be treated early while she’s young.”
“Her husband has a good heart! Other families wouldn’t bother, it’s not a life-threatening illness, after all.”
The man cupped his hands politely in thanks and gently approached the woman. “Xiao Yu, don’t be afraid! We’ve just switched to a bigger ship. There’s no danger.”
Hearing this, everyone assumed the woman had gone mad from the change in environment.
Without the man having to chase her, well-meaning bystanders stepped in to restrain the woman.
Dodging their grasp, the woman wept and cried out, “No! I don’t know him! I’m not sick. He’s a liar, a trafficker! Everyone on our boat was kidnapped by them. Please, I beg you, save me!…”
She dodged in fear and panic, her voice trembling, her expression terrified, her hair disheveled.
But no one believed her words.
Even some “helpful” aunties assisted in grabbing her and advised, “Go back with your man, listen to him and get treated soon. Oh, what a poor soul!”
The woman struggled frantically, kicking and biting, repeating urgently, “Save me! He’s a human trafficker.”
Su Xiaoman leaned close to Su Meng and whispered, “Who do you think is telling the truth, and who’s lying?”
Su Meng replied without hesitation, “The woman is telling the truth.”
She had long recognized the woman… Mo Xiaoli.
Wang Guangming’s former fiancée.
The poor woman who had been cheated on by Zhong Wanrou.
Ha!
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
She couldn’t let her die too soon.
“Let’s go find the police!” Su Meng said and immediately started looking around for any officers.
But just as she turned, she suddenly heard a cry: “Su Meng, save me!”
