- Chapter 27 - Mom, Mom, He’s Dead!
“Two.”
Someone wept and begged for mercy, “Sir, spare me! I’ll pay, I’ll pay right now. I want to live.”
Someone sneered, “Coward! Do you think he’ll let you go? Dream on! Let’s all charge together and fight!”
“Let’s fight! Down with the bandit tyrants!”
…
Su Meng huddled among the crowd, cautiously inching toward the crew members.
She carefully surveyed the area and fixed her gaze on a man in a white tank top, crouched among the crew, with prominent calluses on the webbing between his thumb and index finger.
No other reason, his sharp, dangerous gaze felt all too familiar.
He might be a soldier.
The thought flashed through her mind, sending a tremor of excitement through her nerves.
Luo, the boss, seemed to revel in the feeling of controlling everything.
Carrying his gun, he paced slowly with a smirk, savoring the struggles of his “prey” and the thrill of having everything under his command.
He was in no hurry to count, occasionally glancing back toward the ship’s cabin.
Suddenly, three pirates carrying bundles emerged from the cabin.
“Boss, we’ve gathered everything. Nothing of much value. What do you think?”
Luo kicked one of the bundles angrily and cursed, “A bunch of paupers! Then I won’t hold back.”
Frustrated, he loaded his gun, squinted one eye, and aimed at the crowd.
“One.”
“Please, no… I’m fighting back!”
“Waaah…”
The crowd instantly descended into chaos.
Pleas for mercy, angry curses, and cries blended into a cacophony.
Amid the noise, people dodged, shifted, ran, dropped to the ground crawling, or fainted…
Su Meng took advantage of the chaos to move closer to the man in the white tank top. Glancing at his deeply gashed left hand, her small face scrunched up in worry, her heart troubled.
Could he still rise to the occasion?
But the situation was urgent, leaving no room for second thoughts.
She cut the ropes binding him and, after a moment’s hesitation, handed him the knife. “Can you still do it?”
The man: “…”
He looked at the pale, trembling girl, her forehead beaded with cold sweat and lips quivering. In the end, he said nothing, bending low as he stealthily moved toward a nearby pirate.
His plan was to subdue as many as he could, with the priority being to seize a gun.
Su Meng moved among the crew, her teeth chattering with fear as she continued to untie others.
Just as Luo’s gun was about to aim at the woman who had been pulled out first, the captain suddenly stood up and lunged at a nearby pirate, shouting, “Go save them!”
Su Meng didn’t understand what he meant.
But she saw Luo’s gun shift its aim toward the captain.
Her heart sank. Using the cover of the people in front of her, she flicked a silver needle.
This was her first attempt to kill with a silver needle.
Trembling with fear, her limbs weak, she missed her target, of course.
Then, she heard the captain roar again, “Hurry!”
The next moment, a crew member sprinted away.
“Bang!”
A pirate, who knew which one, fired, and the first crew member to run out fell to the ground.
Despite this, another crew member following behind didn’t hesitate, running away as if possessed.
Luo flew into a rage and roared, “Begin!”
At the same time, he fired his gun.
Along with the gunshot came the sound of a pirate falling, struck by a blade.
Immediately after, the man in the white tank top seized a gun and returned fire.
One shot hit a pirate who had leaped in front of Luo to shield him.
Luo roared again, raising his gun to retaliate.
But the next second, he seemed frozen in place, his body stiffening, his wide eyes filled with terror and panic, and… the struggle of his final moments.
“Boss!”
The pirates stared in horror, their eyes wide with disbelief as they looked at the body that had crashed to the ground.
On his temple, a silver needle was embedded beside a bleeding hole, gleaming with a cold, metallic light.
Su Meng hadn’t expected to actually hit Boss Luo.
Feeling more assured, she excitedly pulled out a handful of silver needles and threw them wildly, not caring whether they hit or not.
As the man in the white vest was struck in his other arm, his movements slowed considerably. The pirates gradually closed in, laughing arrogantly.
Su Meng trembled as she fumbled for her handgun.
She had never fired a gun before.
She was terrified, her heart racing.
But the fear of death overpowered everything else.
She clumsily handled the gun, finally managing to pull the trigger.
Just then, two men in blood-stained police uniforms burst out of the cabin, followed closely by the crew member who had sneaked inside earlier.
“Bang! Bang! Bang!”
They opened fire the moment they emerged, without a moment’s hesitation.
The sudden counterattack caught the pirates off guard.
In an instant, the situation was under control.
Of the ten pirates, only two remained, severely wounded.
The man in the white vest, holding a bloodied long knife, scanned the area. Spotting Su Meng in the crowd, he gave a slight smirk.
Su Meng met his gaze briefly before turning her attention to the young woman who was still straddling a pirate, frantically beating and biting him. She sighed softly.
Quietly retrieving the silver needle embedded in the pirate’s neck, she said hoarsely, “He’s already dead! Sister, your child is safe now.”
The young woman, lost in her own world, shook off Su Meng’s hand and continued her frenzied assault.
Seeing her in such a crazed state, the child cried even harder, his sobs heart-wrenching.
Su Meng’s eyes grew warm as she gently stroked the child’s hair. “Go tell your mom that the bad guy is dead. We’ve won.”
The child sniffled, blowing two large bubbles from his nose. He tugged at the young woman’s clothes. “Mom, Mom, he’s dead!”
The young woman froze.
She looked blankly at her child, then down at the pirate beneath her, whose body was now a bloody mess. After a moment of dazed silence, she rolled off him and hugged her child tightly, bursting into loud, earth-shaking sobs.
Su Meng quietly stepped back and joined the others in tending to the wounded.
“Thank you!” A deep, raspy voice suddenly sounded above her.
Su Meng paused and looked up at the man who had spoken. She quickly finished bandaging his wound. “Thank you for protecting us!”
If it weren’t for the man’s bravery, the others wouldn’t have been inspired to fight the pirates, and they might not have held out until the police arrived.
Worse still, every single person on the ship could have been thrown into the sea as fish food.
The man raised an eyebrow and stiffly handed over the knife’s hilt with his injured hand. “This is yours. Thank you!”
He had initially wanted to say that it was dangerous for a young girl to carry such a long knife. But then he remembered that it was this very knife, as long as a forearm, that had helped him secure victory. He swallowed his words along with his saliva.
Fortunately, the rest of the journey was calm, and Su Meng returned to her room to rest peacefully.
As the sun set, her door was knocked on again.
Su Meng’s heart skipped a beat. Had they encountered pirates again?
“Comrade, the captain has invited you to dine in the restaurant as a token of gratitude for your courage and bravery in the face of danger,” the crew member said with a warm, admiring smile.
Su Meng raised her eyebrows in surprise. “Thank you!”
The spacious dining room only had a few rectangular tables temporarily pushed together to form one large table.
No other diners were in sight.
Seated at the table were the captain leading the group, the crew members, two onboard public security officers, a man wearing a white undershirt beneath an army-green overshirt, and a young woman with her child.
A seat was left vacant beside the man.
“Please, come join us!” The captain stood up, raising his uninjured hand in a gentlemanly gesture of invitation.
The young woman seemed to notice her hesitation and said with a smile, “Comrade, come quickly! The captain is treating us to a feast.”
The atmosphere at the table was relatively relaxed.
After the captain and the crew expressed their gratitude to Su Meng and the man in the white undershirt, the men began eating with great gusto.
Su Meng ate gracefully, unhurriedly, and occasionally chatted with the young woman.
“So, you’re a military wife! That’s impressive!” Su Meng gave a thumbs-up, genuinely admiring her.
“You’re quite brave yourself! I only managed to defeat the pirates with everyone’s help. Comrade, you… Where are you headed?”
Before the young woman could finish her sentence, a crew member rushed in hurriedly.
He whispered something into the captain’s ear, and the captain’s expression changed drastically. “I’ll go check it out first!”
