- Chapter 25 - Sent to the Farm for Reform
Su Meng smiled and nodded, “Yes!”
If the Neighborhood Committee kept a close watch on her, not only would she be unable to search for her father and younger brother, but even Granny might get dragged into trouble.
None of them noticed that Huo Zhenhua had quietly descended the stairs from the 19th-floor landing.
Meanwhile, Nie Rongchang hesitated for a moment before asking, “Xiao Su, what are your plans now? Will you return with us?”
Just as Su Meng was about to speak, hurried footsteps approached from behind.
A man handed her a business card. “Comrade Su, I’m from the Municipal Office. We’d like to temporarily assign you to the Propaganda Department. What do you think?”
Then he turned to Nie Rongchang. “Regiment Commander Nie, we genuinely value Comrade Su’s abilities. Given our successful collaboration this time, there will likely be more foreign affairs involving visiting delegations in the future. We hope you can accommodate this arrangement.”
His tone toward Nie Rongchang was noticeably more respectful and sincere.
Anyone could see that their offer to Su Meng was largely due to Nie Rongchang’s support and her recent exposure to high-ranking officials like Chief Jiang and Wang Hui.
Worried that Su Meng might not understand the term “temporary assignment,” Nie Rongchang explained, “It means you’ll be called in to assist when there are foreign guests. The rest of the time, you can carry on as usual.”
In simpler terms, she was like a temporary brick, worked hard when needed and discarded when not.
Hearing this, Su Meng understood perfectly. She put on a flattered expression and said, “Thank you for your confidence, leaders! If needed, I’m willing to share the organization’s burdens and follow orders.”
Zhang Bin, satisfied with her response, smiled more genuinely. “Good, it’s settled then. My name is Zhang Bin. Feel free to contact me if needed.”
Su Meng carefully stored the business card in front of him. “Thank you, Comrade Zhang!”
After seeing Zhang Bin off, Nie Rongchang looked at Su Meng with concern. “They… aren’t easy to deal with. Aren’t you afraid?”
Su Meng knew what he meant, he was worried she might face unfair treatment. She smiled calmly. “I’m not afraid! As long as I don’t break any laws or violate discipline, they can’t do anything to me. At worst, I’ll go to the countryside.”
Nie Rongchang wanted to persuade her to return with him, but as her future elder brother-in-law, he feared overstepping. He could only sigh, take out a pen and paper, and quickly jot something down. “This is my home phone number. Keep in touch, whether there’s something or not.”
He admired Su Meng’s courage and intelligence and couldn’t bear to see the young woman struggle alone. He silently resolved to remind his younger brother to look out for her more.
By the time they left the hotel, it was already 5 p.m.
Su Meng declined Nie Rongchang’s invitation to dinner and hurried home, rolling up her sleeves, ready to deal with Zhong Wanrou, who was as annoying as a flea.
Granny, seeing her change clothes again, asked curiously, “Are you going out again?”
Su Meng swung the belt fastened around her waist. “Granny, I’m going to check on Zhong Wanrou.”
“No need! That stepdaughter left with the rural work group this morning.”
“Left? Wasn’t she supposed to leave the day after tomorrow? Why did she go today?” Su Meng was astonished. “I wanted to see her off.”
She sat under the eaves, chin in her hands, feeling somewhat melancholic.
Granny, unaware of her gloom, said gleefully, “She’s nothing but trouble. The sooner she’s gone, the better.”
“You know, Hu Fusheng from two streets over came to block our door with his people this morning, but then his own house caught fire. Who would’ve thought that just ten minutes after he went back, his home was raided by the Neighborhood Committee. They say it was his stepdaughter who reported him.”
Su Meng touched the tip of her nose, keeping her role in it all under wraps.
When she reported Hu Fusheng, she had used Zhong Wanrou’s name.
She wanted to see Zhong Wanrou and Hu Fusheng’s family tear each other apart to make Hu Wangqing taste the consequences of scheming against her.
“But she shouldn’t have been sent to the countryside so quickly, right?” Su Meng was puzzled.
Zhong Wanrou’s assignment to the countryside had gone through Jiang Weimin’s hands.
Once an educated youth signed up, the time and location of their assignment couldn’t be changed.
Something major must have happened again.
Granny brushed back the stray hairs at her temples, her smile deepening the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes. “Hu Fusheng’s daughter reported her as the illegitimate child of the old man from the Su family’s second branch. Hahaha! And who would’ve thought the old lady from the second branch actually admitted it!”
Su Meng was so shocked she nearly choked on her own saliva. “So, Zhong Wanrou was sent away for re-education along with the second branch?!”
“Not sent away, she’s being reformed at a farm. The scene was absolutely wild. Too bad you missed it.”
Su Meng slapped her chest in regret. “What a shame! That’s a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. A neglected, sixty-something old man suddenly saddled with an eighteen-year-old, delicate, and beautiful illegitimate daughter. What’s worse, this illegitimate daughter was raised in luxury right under their noses and she used to be the very person they once groveled to. Just imagine how frustrated and furious they must be. Hahaha! I wish I could’ve been there to see it.”
Granny chuckled and wiped the corner of her eye. “I bet that stepdaughter is in for a world of suffering. None of that family are kind-hearted, are they? The old man is the most opportunistic of all. Seeing she didn’t even have a bag with her, he just played deaf and dumb, letting everyone drag her through the mud. Hahaha! So, satisfying!”
Su Meng chimed in, “So satisfying!”
She had thought Zhong Wanrou was merely being sent to the countryside, but it turned out she was being sent to a farm for reform.
Su Meng glanced at the household register lying on the desk in her space, her eyes narrowing into a sly, fox-like grin.
Hmph!
So, what if Zhong Wanrou was reborn?
Trying to send me to the countryside? She can go reform at the farm herself first!
But then, her eyes fell on the book in the corner “The ’70s Pampered Girl Follows Her Soldier Husband, Gets Pregnant with Triplets, and Is Doted on by the Whole Family.”
Remembering that Zhong Wanrou was the female lead in that book, the heroine of this world, her nerves suddenly tightened.
With the plot being so overpowering, even a farm wouldn’t be able to hold the female lead for long.
Besides, Zhong Wanrou knew the pickup location for that batch of supplies in Guangzhou.
She couldn’t afford to let her guard down. She had to set off as soon as possible and get there first to intercept the goods, only then would she feel at ease.
Still, Old Master Su really did need some reforming. Otherwise, it wouldn’t do justice to all the evil he had committed or the suffering Su Ada had endured all these years.
When Su Meng turned around, she saw Su Ada leaning by the window, staring blankly into the distance.
His complexion had improved a lot, and on his thin face, one could faintly make out the curve of a smile.
He seemed happy at this moment, radiating a newfound vitality.
“Granny, you and Ada take care of things at home. I need to be away for a few days.”
She thought it was time to go to Guangzhou.
Hearing this, both Granny and Su Ada turned to look at her.
The smile vanished from Granny’s lips. “Do you have to go? Is it dangerous?”
Su Meng shook her head. “No danger. I’m just going to help with something.”
Retrieving the belongings that rightfully belonged to the Su family was, in essence, helping herself.
The elderly woman, recalling that Su Meng had been invited to assist with translation that day, assumed it was a similar task. “Then go quickly and return soon. Be sure to speak and act cautiously, and proceed with care.”
Su Ada said nothing.
Su Meng had no intention of revealing her whereabouts. Before leaving, she placed a medical kit by Su Ada’s bedside, hiding a handgun at the very bottom.
The scar-faced man was still at large, and Su Meng feared Su Ada might be discovered.
It was better to be prepared than caught off guard, it would bring her some peace of mind.
…
The next morning, Su Meng stepped into the faint light piercing the horizon and made her way to the dock.
She set off quietly for Guangzhou, without alerting anyone.
“Hold on tight, we’re setting off!”
With the boatman’s call, the vessel left the dock and slowly sailed into the open sea.
Su Meng brushed back her wind-tousled hair and, carrying her satchel, stepped into the cabin.
As she turned her head, she unexpectedly spotted a burly man on the neighboring boat dragging a long-haired woman inside.
The woman’s face was obscured by her hair, but she seemed to shout something in Su Meng’s direction.
However, the blare of the ship’s horn was too loud, and Su Meng couldn’t make out the words.
