- Chapter 13 - The Old Master Su
Su Ada?
So, it was him!
In her memory, Su Ada was a burly man, about 1.8 meters tall, with a muscular build and slicked-back hair. His face was perpetually framed by a thick, inch-long beard, and a single glance from his sharp, eagle-like eyes was enough to send chills down anyone’s spine.
What immense suffering had he endured to become so gaunt and on the brink of death?
Su Meng carefully took his pulse again and, seeing his condition had improved slightly, slipped out of the space. In her memories, Su Ada and her father, Su Mianzhi, were inseparable like two peas in a pod. Why was he alone in the hands of the second branch of the Su family, with no sign of her father? What connection did he have with the second branch and Zhong Cuilin?
Carrying these questions, Su Meng cautiously followed the direction in which her second grandfather had left.
Second Grandfather Su Mengjin had been born with striking good looks, dashing and reckless in his youth. Spoiled by his mother, he grew into a notorious playboy in Shanghai, earning the nickname “Young Master Su.” In his younger days, his interests were wide-ranging, indulging in vices like gambling, drugs, and prostitution. There were even rumors that he had once struck deals with the Japanese for business, leading his furious father, the patriarch of the Su family, to disown him.
Once fallen from grace, he found himself surrounded by enemies on all sides. Those who had once followed him deserted him one by one, and some even betrayed him. Hunted by his foes, he lived like a stray dog, repeatedly teetering between life and death. It was only after the Su Mansion intervened that he finally found stability.
Who would have thought he would imprison Su Ada and even keep thugs? How had he managed to do all this while being destitute? Su Meng couldn’t make sense of it.
The book had only briefly mentioned the Su family, with no reference to a character like the “Young Master Su.” Whenever Zhong Wanrou received honors and praise, she would secretly gloat about how wise she had been to monopolize the Su family’s wealth, while sneering at Su Meng for her “lowly fate” and inability to enjoy such fortune. Yet, her greatest regret was never finding the Su family’s hidden treasure, often cursing the Su ancestors in frustration.
Thinking of this, Su Meng let out a soft, derisive laugh. If she weren’t in such a hurry to get to Yangcheng, she would have loved to stay and witness Zhong Wanrou’s miserable state in the countryside. How humiliating would it be for someone with no money, no power, and no one to help her secure daily necessities?
Su Meng felt like laughing, but when she spotted four black-clad men armed with guns standing guard at the exit, her heart tightened, and she quickly slipped back into the space. Clearly, facing four armed men alone, she stood no chance. Her only notable skill was the medical expertise passed down by her grandfather, the renowned physician Ming Shenyi. Thinking of the old man who had hidden away for over a decade, Su Meng felt a pang of sorrow. She had always heeded his warning not to reveal her medical skills lightly, even avoiding her preferred field of medicine in university and opting instead for mechanics and drafting.
Lost in thought, she gathered the necessary herbs from the mountainside within the space and skillfully prepared a knockout drug. Her plan was to catch them off guard and escape first, as expected, the four black-clad men were quickly incapacitated by the drug.
Su Meng smoothly exited the tunnel, picked up the four guns, and stealthily made her way toward the main courtyard. This had to be the second branch’s residence. The kitchen emitted wisps of smoke, and the aroma of food filled the air. Su Meng swallowed hard and, following the route from her memory, crept toward the study.
The old Master Su was reclining in an armchair in the study, puffing away on his cigarette.
The dull gray smoke slowly dissipated, veiling his withered face but failing to conceal his sorrow.
“Alas!”
As he sighed, Su Meng swiftly stuffed a drugged cloth into his mouth.
Minutes later, when the Old Master Su reopened his eyes, he met the deathly stare of “Su Ada.”
Instantly, his pupils trembled violently, his cheeks twitched, the pipe in his hand clattered to the floor, and his legs jerked involuntarily, failing to lift him from his seat.
He slumped, utterly paralyzed.
“You… you…”
His shriveled lips flapped open and shut several times before he stammered out two words. A gurgle sounded in his throat, his face flushed crimson, and his eyeballs bulged.
He was choking on phlegm.
Su Meng watched his distress with amusement for a moment before mercifully inserting a needle into his acupoint.
She had no intention of losing a useful tool without extracting any information first.
“Old Master Su, long time no see!”
True to his experience as a seasoned veteran, the Old Master Su regained his composure in an instant.
“You are not Su Ada.”
Su Meng twirled the silver needle indifferently, her voice cold. “Behave! I saved you once, and I can just as easily end you at any time.”
The Old Master Su clearly recalled her earlier skillful needlework, his face stiffening. He let out a soft sigh. “At least tell me who you are. Friend or foe?”
“Keep babbling if you have a death wish.” As she spoke, Su Meng waved the needle. “What have you done to the family head?”
Hearing this, the Old Master Su’s pupils contracted, and he shrank back into his chair. “I… I haven’t seen him in over a decade. You’re asking the wrong person.”
Su Meng scoffed. “You captured me precisely to harm the family head, didn’t you? And what is your relationship with Zhong Cuilin? Spill everything.”
Noticing his evasive eyes, Su Meng impatiently jabbed the needle into him.
The Old Master Su cried out in pain.
With another swift needle strike from Su Meng, he fell silent!
Terrified!
He pointed frantically at his opening and closing mouth, which produced no sound, alternating between nodding and clasping his hands in pleading.
A truly comical sight!
Su Meng toyed with the silver needle as if it were a small pistol, now aiming it at his forehead, now at his eyes, then casually tracing it across his throat.
He was so frightened… his expression drastically changed, and he wet himself.
Disgusted, Su Meng stepped back a meter. “If you don’t start talking straight, you can go meet King Yama.”
Tears streamed down the Old Master Su’s face as he nodded frantically, heedless of the risk of breaking his neck.
“I’ll talk! We received word from Zhong Cuilin that A’da had returned alone. So, we caught him off guard, subdued him, and planned to force him to reveal the whereabouts of the ancestors’ hidden wealth, as well as the location of Su Mianzhi.”
“And what else? Did you or Zhong Cuilin have a hand in Su Mianzhi’s disappearance?”
“It was Zhong Cuilin and that adulterous pair, Shen Wuyang. They killed the family matriarch and tried to drown the newborn infant, but Su Mianzhi stumbled upon them. So, Su Mianzhi must have been eliminated by them. I swear, every word is true.”
Hearing this, it aligned with what was recorded in the texts.
But how could Zhong Cuilin, a mere maid, have the audacity to murder her employers? Could there be someone backing her?
She thought it and asked it aloud.
The Old Master Su’s eyes darted around, and he hemmed and hawed without uttering a single word.
“Speak!” Su Meng brandished the needle once more.
“She was the spy I planted in the main residence. She is also my…”
Su Meng’s heart skipped a beat as an unbelievable thought surfaced in her mind. “Your lover?”
He stared at her in astonishment, then averted his gaze with a flicker of darkness in his eyes. “No, she was my lawful wife.”
Having said this much, he no longer bothered to conceal the truth.
It turned out that in his youth, he had been targeted by enemies and took refuge in the countryside. There, he secretly married Zhong Cuilin without informing anyone.
By the time their first son was born, his injuries had healed.
The young master of the Su family, accustomed to a carefree life, returned to his old ways after some sweet talk, completely forgetting about the mother and child he had left behind in the countryside.
Zhong Cuilin, carrying their child, embarked on a long journey to find her husband, walking all the way to Shanghai.
But just as she located the pleasure-seeking young master Su, she was spotted by his enemies.
