- Chapter 11 - The Scent of Money Everywhere
A bat came swooping toward her.
The eerie wind stirred by its flapping wings carried a sharp, echoing cry, startling Su Meng so much she nearly dropped her shovel and fled the way she had come.
But the thought of the wealth that awaited spurred her to gather her courage and press on.
After what felt like an eternity, she finally reached level ground.
Following a passage paved with blue bricks, Su Meng moved forward step by step, a mix of curiosity and tension in her heart.
Relying on her sharp memory, she deftly avoided the traps along the corridor and arrived at the end.
The moment she looked up, she froze in terror.
A snake… a giant snake!
An enormous python!
Panic and fear seized Su Meng.
She wanted to run, but her legs felt as heavy as lead, refusing to move.
All she could do was crouch, covering her head, trembling.
After a long silence, Su Meng slowly regained her composure.
She cautiously lifted her head, peeking with one eye at the python coiled around the massive bronze door.
One glance was all it took before she squeezed her eyes shut again in fear.
Suddenly, she realized the python was unnervingly still.
Summoning her courage, she stole another glance and saw that the snake remained fixed to the bronze door as if glued.
Its enormous head protruded, its forked tongue flicking arrogantly toward any intruder, while its body seemed almost like a relief carving embedded into the door.
Completely motionless?!
Was it dead?
Just a carved relief?
It looked so lifelike!
Mustering her bravery, Su Meng crept closer to inspect it, it was indeed a relief.
She let out a heavy sigh of relief, her tense heart finally easing.
This door was also controlled by a mechanism.
Su Meng examined it from top to bottom and suddenly noticed a depression on the python’s tongue, shaped remarkably like the Su family’s seal.
Could it be…?
Fortunately, she had already taken everything from the Su family.
Naturally, the family seal was now in her possession.
In the next moment, the seal fit perfectly into the groove, and a series of clicking sounds echoed through the cave.
Immediately, dirt crumbled from the walls, and dust filled the air.
Holding her breath, Su Meng watched unblinkingly as the bronze door slowly swung open. She reached out, sensing the warm, dry air flowing from the other side.
Her surprise deepened.
A few minutes later, the bronze door stopped moving and “spat out” the seal.
Su Meng tucked it away and stepped inside.
The moment her heel touched the ground, the door behind her slammed shut with a loud clang, closing so swiftly that the light in the cave flickered.
She had the unsettling feeling of being trapped like a rat.
But the sight of countless stacks of boxes made Su Meng forget her fears, her only worry now being whether her cramped space could hold it all.
After all, her space consisted of just one mountain, three small wooden cabins, and about forty or fifty square meters of farmland.
Suddenly, she recalled the spatial turbulence when the other teardrop-shaped pendant had merged, and cold sweat broke out on her forehead.
What if her space was still just a mass of thick fog?
However, when she looked inside, she was astonished to find that the mountain behind the cabins now stretched endlessly.
The arc of the mountain range extended into the distant fog on both sides, its full height and length unknown.
The three dull, gray cabins had been completely renewed, as if freshly painted with a glossy finish.
They now shone brightly.
The courtyard had doubled in size and was paved with smooth stone slabs.
In one corner of the yard, a bodhi tree had appeared out of nowhere, its trunk thick enough that only an adult could wrap their arms around it.
Its branches were lush and leafy, stretching out lazily.
Beneath the tree stood a round stone table with four round stone stools.
The little dog she had tossed into her space, its fur as black as ink, was curled up lazily on the table, fast asleep.
Seeing her look over, the puppy removed the tail covering its eyes, its emerald gaze emitting an intimidating gleam.
“Come here!”
Su Meng beckoned and led it onto the wooden bridge.
On the other side of the stream, the fields, neat as tofu blocks, remained the same in number but seemed slightly stretched and enlarged.
The thick fog at the edges of the fields acted like an impenetrable barrier in this world, neither sight nor step could pass through it.
With a sigh, Su Meng withdrew from the space and wandered through the cave, inspecting her domain like a queen.
Stacks of boxes exuded the scent of wealth.
Gold, silver, jewels, antique porcelain, and raw stones were neatly arranged in their designated areas.
These were the riches accumulated by six generations of her Lao Su family.
Countless boxes!
Endless wealth!
All hers now!
Su Meng felt an urge to shout, jump, share her joy with the world, and even taste the gold.
In the end, trembling, she cupped the puppy in her hands and exclaimed, “We’re rich!”
The puppy gave the madwoman a disdainful look, let out a “Woof!” and flicked its tail before hopping away.
Su Meng chuckled softly.
Wherever she stepped, stacks of boxes vanished.
She didn’t know if the treasure map she had deliberately left behind would mislead anyone, but she dared not assume this place would remain undiscovered.
After all, her disappearance from the police station would surely be noticed.
The world was full of clever people.
But with her space, she likely didn’t need to fear being trapped in the cave.
Thinking this, Su Meng finished clearing out the cave.
Rubbing her slightly aching head, she silently lamented how exhausting it was to collect things.
She shared some pastries with the puppy.
Then, she pried out all the fist-sized luminous pearls from the cave ceiling.
The light dimmed instantly, making the coal-black puppy hard to see.
“Little Black Ball, let’s go!”
“Woof~”
The puppy’s bark came from about two meters away. Su Meng scolded coldly, “Little Black Ball, hurry up! If you don’t come now, I’m leaving without you.”
But the puppy paid no heed to the threat.
Frowning, Su Meng strode over, bent down, picked it up, and gave it a rough rub. “Are you trying to rebel, Little Black Ball?”
The puppy nuzzled obediently into her palm and let out a soft whimper: “Woof!”
Even without Little Black Ball’s reminder, she had already noticed something unusual about this place.
A faint, chilly breeze pricked her skin like needles, carrying the subtle fragrance of grass and trees.
Could this be another exit from the cave?
Su Meng tossed Little Black Ball into her space, took out the largest luminous pearl, and carefully examined the mystery of this spot.
Perseverance paid off!
She pressed a small mechanism hidden between the floor tiles and opened a secret door.
Instantly, her vision broadened.
The secret door was part of the cliff face.
She was standing right at the edge of the precipice.
One step forward would plunge her into an abyss, while above her stretched a cliff overgrown with vines and shrubs, its top unseen.
“Neither heaven nor earth offers a way out”, that summed up her current predicament.
Su Meng had no intention of turning back.
Taking a deep breath, she closed the secret door and slipped into the narrow, desolate passage beside it.
Walking through the unfamiliar corridor, she clutched the luminous pearl tightly, her heart racing with a mix of fear, excitement, and caution.
After about an hour, she faintly heard voices.
“Just let him die! Why waste medicine?”
“I can’t accept it! You’ve seen our situation. If we don’t get the wealth our ancestors left behind, we’ll have nothing at all.”
“Will he tell you? Forget it, let’s search ourselves.”
“Search? How? Did Zhong Cuilin say anything?”
“No. That vicious woman should have been dealt with long ago. If it weren’t for…”
The voices gradually faded.
Su Meng was certain that one of them was her dear second grandfather.
What were they doing?
Who had they imprisoned?
What was Zhong Cuilin’s relationship with them?
Things seemed more complicated than what was written in the book.
Brimming with questions, she crept step by step toward the light source, only to discover it was a three-way intersection.
The single passage had split into three.
Su Meng glanced at the chaotic footprints on the ground and felt troubled.
She wanted to find the person they had imprisoned in the shortest time possible without alerting anyone.
But the empty tunnel carried echoes.
Su Meng became even more cautious.
She carefully controlled her footsteps and breathing, meticulously examining the traces on the ground.
After turning a few corners, Su Meng caught the scent of medicinal herbs and… the smell of decay.
