- Chapter 33 - You Were the One Who Fell for Her First
Yan Mengyi’s attention was drawn to the small rubber band on Jin Youshu’s hand.
Pei Nalian, quick to notice, explained, “She’s an ambassador for Pr. They custom-made these beaded bracelets engraved with our names.”
“No wonder.” No wonder the craftsmanship was so exquisite.
Pei Nalian tied up her hair, looking very capable.
“Be careful,” Jiang Banxia warned kindly. “That tree is slippery and super hard to climb.”
“I’ll be careful.”
After strapping on her gear, Pei Nalian struggled slightly with the first step and slipped on the second, just like Jiang Banxia had earlier.
“If you can’t do it, come down and let Tangtang try,” Jiang Banxia suggested.
Jin Youshu looked worried. Pei Nalian might have backed down if it weren’t for Jiang Banxia’s words about Tangtang. Now, she definitely wouldn’t give up.
“Senior, I’m fine. I want to try again. I think I’m getting the hang of it.” Though terrified inside, Pei Nalian put on a brave face.
“Come on, get down,” Jiang Banxia fretted. “You’ll fall on your butt later.”
“Artist Jiang, it’s alright. Let Nalian try again.”
Since Jin Youshu had spoken, Jiang Banxia couldn’t argue further.
Pei Nalian quickly grasped the technique, climbing much faster and steadier than Zhou Qiutong.
Mo Zhenyi signaled the others to retreat to a safe distance.
Jin Youshu was the most anxious, constantly reporting Pei Nalian’s distance from the treetop.
“Just one meter to reach the coconut! Stay steady… Yes, take your time.”
Pei Nalian finally reached the treetop.
Yan Mengyi watched nervously. She had initially thought Pei Nalian was just a pampered idol, but now she saw her determination and unyielding spirit.
Perhaps she should be like that too, truly contributing to the team.
Pei Nalian continuously adjusted her position at the treetop, each slight movement making the guests below hold their breath.
The glaring sunlight made it difficult to look up for long, even with sunglasses and sun hats.
Yan Mengyi couldn’t imagine how scorching it must be for Pei Nalian up there, and how sore her arm muscles must feel with every movement.
After harvesting five coconuts, Pei Nalian slowly began her descent amid the cheering of the group.
“Amazing!” Jiang Banxia couldn’t help but give Pei Nalian a thumbs-up. Turning to Jin Youshu, she said, “I never expected someone who looks so delicate to climb such a tall tree.”
“She must be scared, but she’s always willing to try new things.”
Everyone watched as Pei Nalian slowly descended from ten meters above the ground to about two meters.
Now that she wasn’t so high up, the alarm in everyone’s minds subsided, and they began analyzing and summarizing the key points of climbing coconut trees, chatting and laughing.
Just then, an accident happened.
Pei Nalian let out a startled cry.
Everyone turned around and saw that her safety harness had somehow come undone, and her foot straps lay scattered on the ground.
Instinctively, Pei Nalian clutched the tree, but this caused her exposed skin to be scraped.
When everyone rushed over, Pei Nalian, not wanting to worry them, covered her injury with her hand.
But the blood and scrape couldn’t be hidden, and the sight was alarming.
Mo Zhenyi called the medical team and knelt beside Pei Nalian to examine her wound. “Artist Pei, I never expected this to happen. I’ll call an ambulance later.”
“It’s fine, just a scratch. No need for an ambulance,” Pei Nalian said, waving her hands dismissively.
The doctor approached, crouched down, and opened her medical kit.
Mo Zhenyi glanced at her. From the first look, she felt the woman’s presence was striking. When their eyes met, Mo Zhenyi sensed a sharpness beneath the beauty.
It’s her! Mo Zhenyi recognized the young billionaire heiress of the Yu Corporation.
As expected of a true doer—she wouldn’t tolerate any half-measures or nonsense.
Mo Zhenyi felt a mix of lingering fear and curiosity. What could possibly be so captivating about this show that such a privileged elite would lower herself to this extent?
The doctor’s professional but firm treatment made Pei Nalian hiss in discomfort.
Jin Youshu wanted to ask the doctor to be gentler, but Pei Nalian held her back, shaking her head to stop her.
Yan Mengyi’s attention remained fixed on Pei Nalian’s wound. She stayed by her side, wanting to help in some way.
Suddenly, the world before her eyes went dark.
Li Tang had covered her eyes.
Yan Mengyi tried to push her away, but Li Tang held her firmly, her grip strangely determined.
“Don’t look,” Li Tang said. “I’m afraid you’ll have nightmares.”
“It won’t happen.”
“Trust me.”
Yan Mengyi tried to push away, but Li Tang wouldn’t let her move an inch.
The doctor finished treating the wound, packed up the medical kit, and prepared to retreat to the logistics area.
But as she passed by Li Tang, she bumped her shoulder.
In a crowded place, such accidents were inevitable.
Everyone present assumed it was just an accident.
Only Li Tang knew it wasn’t an accident.
She knew very well that the other person was targeting her.
But she hadn’t expected them to dare to go this far in public, in front of the cameras.
Yu Zhen nodded, feigning regret, but she had already seen what she wanted to see in Li Tang’s eyes.
Fear.
“Did someone just whisper in our ears?” Yan Mengyi asked, looking up.
Li Tang shook her head, smiling. “Of course not. You’re just too tense.”
But Li Tang knew very well that Yu Zhen had spoken, very softly, but clearly enough for her to hear.
“What are you afraid of?” Yu Zhen asked. It was the first thing she had said to Li Tang in years.
After all these years, after becoming a successful businesswoman, the first thing Yu Zhen said was this.
It seemed she still harbored resentment, still couldn’t let go.
But Li Tang glanced at Yu Zhen’s retreating figure and hugged Yan Mengyi even tighter.
You were the first to fall for me.
But you were also the first to run away.
Yan Mengyi expressed her desire to climb up and give it a try.
Auntie Wang had already started preparing the equipment for Yan Mengyi.
But Li Tang firmly refused. “She can’t do it. I’ll go up instead.”
“I want to try.”
Li Tang shook her head at Yan Mengyi. “It’s too hot right now, and besides, aren’t you afraid of heights?”
Pei Nalian, sitting nearby, interjected, “If Xiao Yi wants to try, she should be allowed to. As long as she follows the proper techniques, she won’t get hurt.”
“No.”
“You’re being too strict. She’s not your personal property,” Pei Nalian said with a cold smile, forcing herself to remain calm and polite.
Normally, Pei Nalian would avoid confronting Li Tang directly while fully conscious. But the pain was overwhelming, forcing her to speak her mind.
“Tangtang is just worried about Xiao Yi,” Zhou Qiutong said. “Besides, Xiao Yi isn’t used to physical activity, and the show’s safety measures are too basic. If we know there’s a tiger in the mountain, why go there in the first place?”
Mo Zhenyi gave an awkward laugh. Why had the conflict between the two factions suddenly drawn her into the crossfire?
Yan Mengyi had never argued with Li Tang. She always listened to her, but she felt a vague sense of discomfort.
Was Li Tang’s excessive interference overprotectiveness, or did she truly believe Yan Mengyi couldn’t handle anything on her own?
Li Tang never disappointed. She picked over a dozen coconuts—the most anyone had gathered, the fastest, and without getting hurt.
But it seemed like everyone expected her to do well. No one seemed to think her performance was particularly impressive.
After climbing down from the tree, Yan Mengyi helped the others load the coconuts onto the tricycle.
Her lips pressed together, she seemed angry and unwilling to speak to Li Tang.
But when their backs were turned, she quietly asked, “Does it hurt?”
She’d noticed Li Tang’s hand had been cut by a sickle.
“You care about me?”
“Not at all.”
Li Tang turned around, pretending to straighten the coconuts, but she pressed a kiss to Yan Mengyi’s cheek.
The kiss came out of nowhere. Jiang Banxia, who’d seen it, whistled suggestively, teasing them about their closeness.
Yan Mengyi was both embarrassed and annoyed. Li Tang rubbed her shoulder, trying to soothe her.
Everyone praised their loving and compatible relationship.
Only Yan Mengyi knew their problems remained unresolved.
The production team paid them based on the number of coconuts they harvested.
When they saw the less than one hundred yuan in cash in their hands, they were all a bit dumbfounded.
“We were baking in the sun for so long, and this is all we earned?”
“Life really is tough for everyone.”
“Director, what are we supposed to use this money for?”
“Use it as you wish,” Mo Zhenyi said. “Next, please transport the harvested coconuts to the designated location.”
With that, Mo Zhenyi handed them a map.
The map wasn’t hard to read, but who would drive the tricycle became an issue.
The others could sit in the tricycle, fully equipped with sun umbrellas for shade.
But the driver would have to endure the blazing sun the entire time.
“I’ll do it,” Li Tang volunteered.
The others didn’t object. They were already exhausted and overheated, too drained to think.
Yan Mengyi sat in the tricycle, already seeing how Li Tang was being scorched by the fierce sun ahead.
Yan Mengyi took off her sun hat and fanned Li Tang with it.
Not long after the tricycle set off, the group spotted a simple convenience store up ahead. Li Tang parked the vehicle, and everyone got out to take a look.
The owner, a local man, was watching TV, fanning himself, and chewing betel nut when he saw customers arrive. He hurried over to greet them and announced, “This shop only accepts cash. No QR code payments.”
Jiang Banxia chuckled and addressed the camera filming them, “I knew it. Director Mo wouldn’t miss a single opportunity.”
“Boss, can you sell me this electric scooter?” Zhou Qiutong asked, patting the small electric scooter parked outside the shop.
“Sure. I bought it a year ago, practically brand new. Two thousand yuan, cash only.”
“If the six of us take a photo with you, and you’re allowed to display our pictures in the shop to attract customers, what do you say?”
“No thanks. I’m from Beijing, with three houses inside the Second Ring Road. I came here just to relax and not work hard. I don’t need booming business.”
Fortunately, the prices inside the shop were the same as the market rates, so they bought a few bottles of water.
Li Tang also spotted a portable fan and decided to buy that too.
“Wait,” Pei Nalian stopped her. “If you buy that, we’ll run out of all our money.”
