- Chapter 2 - We Used to Shower Together in High School
Yan Mengyi’s snow-white cheeks flushed crimson, the pearls dangling from her earlobes seeming to burn like embers.
Behind her, Li Tang’s lips pressed against her soft ear, feeling the sudden surge in temperature.
So, it wasn’t just the bed that was dead.
It was simply the unavoidable physical distance.
Yan Mengyi lowered her head shyly and gently pushed at the arms encircling her waist. “You go first.”
“But I don’t want to be apart from you for even a second.”
The aloof and cool Goddess Tang, so formidable in public, was now just Tangtang, clinging to her soft, fragrant wife.
Their slippers lay abandoned on some forgotten step.
Two pairs of feet, stumbling and entwined, shuffled into the bathroom.
Despite with only a ten-centimeter height difference, Yan Mengyi felt like a doll that could be lifted with a single hand.
The bathtub filled steadily and the rising steam blurring their slender figures reflected in the mirror.
The only things they carefully removed were the sharp accessories adorning their bodies.
Li Tang’s famously elegant hands slipped off her rings.
Yan Mengyi looked at the faint blue veins pulsing on the back of Li Tang’s hand, her mind inexplicably drifting to the raunchy comments her group chat friends had made.
To feel every inch of her joy and love with my warm body.
The filigree metal belt clattered to the floor.
Li Tang, dressed in a V-neck suit, exuded the aura of a cool and commanding goddess. But once the suit was removed, the nearly bare expanse beneath left Yan Mengyi breathless.
A pair of hands pushed Yan Mengyi backward, then cushioned her back with one hand just before she struck the cold wall.
The palm spread wide, measuring her waist with a span of fingers.
Before her legs could buckle, those hands gently cradled the nape of her neck, then tightened their grip.
“Little Yi, have you missed me?”
Her cheeks flushed crimson, her softly bitten lip silently answering the question.
The tremor in her skin wasn’t fear, but longing.
The intricate frog closures of her qipao were notoriously difficult to undo.
Li Tang, never one for patience, slowly unfastened the buttons with one hand.
The other hand traced the slit of her qipao, gliding along her soft skin as compensation for her forced restraint.
The custom-made bathtub wasn’t large, but it was ample for two.
Li Tang leaned against the tub, Yan Mengyi sitting obediently with her back to her.
Those hands that once fiercely strummed guitars now gently threaded through Yan Mengyi’s thick, long hair, stroking her scalp with light, soothing pressure.
The steam from the hot water turned their snow-white skin a delicate pink.
Li Tang’s hand followed the guidance of her heart.
Yan Mengyi, belatedly realizing what was happening, instinctively tried to escape, but another hand firmly restrained her.
The water in the bathtub churned, the bubbles temporarily parting to reveal the absolute control beneath the surface.
“What are you doing here?” Yan Mengyi leaned back against Li Tang’s shoulder, burying her face deeply, but her crimson ears betrayed her flustered state.
“We’ve been married for seven years. Why are you still so shy? We used to bathe together in middle school, didn’t we?”
“You weren’t like this in middle school,” Yan Mengyi murmured, her voice barely audible.
“Like what?”
Yan Mengyi bit her lip, her rationality gradually succumbing to the moment.
“Wife, you miss me too, don’t you?”
The body never lies.
“You’re so welcoming.”
Yan Mengyi was too embarrassed to lift her head, desperate to cover Li Tang’s mouth.
How could such a beautiful voice, such a beautiful person, utter such daring words that left her speechless?
“Xiao Yi, how did I never realize how beautiful you were in middle school?”
Who ever said Li Tang was aloof?
******
It was always like this: after a bath, half the bathroom would be soaked.
Li Tang scooped Yan Mengyi out of the tub and helped her dry her hair.
Li Tang’s phone kept ringing.
She glanced at the screen and hung up.
“Looks like your manager. Sure you don’t want to answer?” Yan Mengyi asked.
“No need,” Li Tang replied, her striking features sharp and impatient.
She had always been this way, showing zero patience for things that didn’t interest her.
But today, she didn’t toss her phone into the tub. Clearly, she was waiting for a call from someone else.
Halfway through drying Yan Mengyi’s hair, a WeChat notification pinged.
Li Tang immediately grabbed her phone, still holding the hairdryer.
“It’s okay, go ahead,” Yan Mengyi said, taking the hairdryer.
Li Tang pointed at her phone, her excitement was obvious.
“Hua Jingyan, South Korea’s top pop singer, recently invited me to collaborate with her. I’m so excited!”
Yan Mengyi was genuinely happy for Li Tang, knowing her boundless passion for music.
Li Tang walked toward the music room while making the call, quickly disappearing from Yan Mengyi’s sight.
Yan Mengyi blow-dried her hair in front of the mirror, which faithfully reflected the faint kiss marks dotting her snow-white neck.
“As long as we haven’t reached the point of ‘bed death,’ this marriage still has meaning, right?” she told herself, trying to boost her spirits.
Tonight, she wouldn’t be alone.
Stepping into the walk-in closet, her fingers glided across the colorful hangers, finally pausing on a shimmering, intricately cut-out nightgown.
After changing, Yan Mengyi lit sleep-inducing incense in the bedroom and plumped the pillows on the bed.
She arranged the two pillows side by side.
But even after the incense had burned down and waves of drowsiness washed over her, Li Tang still hadn’t returned to the bedroom.
A notification pinged on Yan Mengyi’s phone, the vibration jolting her awake.
It was just mindless news pushed by the browser.
Yet one headline caught her eye: “Li Tang and Hua Jingyan: Two Top Stars in Cross-Border Romance.”
She went to the music room and peered through the glass. Inside, Li Tang was excitedly strumming her guitar, laughing and chatting on the phone.
Yan Mengyi didn’t want to disturb her. She quietly retreated to the bedroom alone.
Before drifting off to sleep, she vaguely thought she knew absolutely nothing about music.
By the time Li Tang returned to the bedroom, it was late at night. She stood by the bed, gazing at her wife.
The girl who had been her deskmate in middle school was now her wife, and they had been married for seven years.
Thinking about it felt like a dream.
Yan Mengyi frowned slightly in her sleep, as if dreaming of something unpleasant. She had curled up into a small ball under the covers, looking as endearing and adorable as a kitten.
Knowing Yan Mengyi was a light sleeper, Li Tang feared waking her if she got into bed. She gently kissed her cheek, resisted the urge to bite it, and went to the adjacent bedroom.
Yan Mengyi’s sleep was restless.
She dreamed of that day again.
Waking from the nightmare, Yan Mengyi’s hands and feet were icy cold.
Clutching her pillow, she padded barefoot across the floor, pushed open the door to the adjacent bedroom, and quietly climbed into bed.
Li Tang was sound asleep, but she instinctively wrapped Yan Mengyi in her arms, murmuring, “Hold me.”
Yan Mengyi’s eyes stung with emotion as she buried her face in Li Tang’s long hair.

Yan Mengyi woke up to the sound of Li Tang getting ready in the morning.
Rubbing her eyes, she sat up and saw Li Tang already dressed, looking like she was about to head out.
“Are you going out?”
“Just have some errands to run.”
Li Tang walked over to the bed, and Yan Mengyi wrapped her arms around her waist, burying her face against her chest.
“Then come back early.”
“I won’t be leaving for a while. I’ll stay with you. Get some more sleep.”
“Okay.”
Yan Mengyi lay back down, but just before Li Tang left, she asked one more question.
“Do you like Hua Jingyan?”
“Of course. She’s quite impressive.”
Li Tang left without noticing her wife quietly curling up under the covers.

In the Handicraft Group chat, messages flooded in one after another.
[@Yan Mengyi, Xiao Yi, is your wife back from her business trip?]
Yan Mengyi: [ Yes. ]
Yan Mengyi didn’t share many details about their private life.
The group members comforted her:
[Maybe it’s just been seven years, and things have gotten a bit routine. She probably still loves you.]
Loves me? Yan Mengyi thought back to last night, when Li Tang had refused to even sleep in the same bed with her.
Do you have any plans for today? Going out together and creating shared memories could really help strengthen your bond.
Yan Mengyi: [ Sounds good! ]
Putting down her phone, she found herself unable to fall back asleep.
Today, Li Tang must be going to that place.
But it seemed like Li Tang had never intended to introduce her to the people there.

“Sister Tang God, you finally answered!”
The manager hadn’t expected the call to go through and his voice still carried a hint of disbelief.
“You don’t need to rush me. I’m already on my way there.”
“That’s good,” the manager said. “I know they haven’t treated you well, but they have significant influence. You need to make appearances.”
“Understood.” Li Tang hung up, her face retaining its usual indifferent expression.
The car pulled into a private estate. Though located in the city center, it was an oasis of tranquility, surrounded by high fences that blocked prying eyes. Amidst the lush greenery lay a magnificent courtyard, resembling a miniature dynasty.
The butler led Li Tang to the main hall and informed her, “President Li is in his study. Please wait here for a moment.”
Li Tang raised her gaze slightly to acknowledge the instruction.
A small electric car came barreling toward her, crashing into the tip of her shoe.
She stood motionless, hands in her pockets, her cold gaze unflinchingly fixed on the child who had run up to her, making no attempt to conceal her disdain.
The child, no more than five or six years old, should have been at an age of innocent exuberance. However, due to excessive pampering and overfeeding by his family, he moved with a slight waddle.
The butler hurried after the child, emerging from the house. Spotting Li Tang, he quickly nodded in greeting.
Knowing Li Tang’s temper, the butler feared her anger and hastily offered an awkward explanation.
“Eldest Miss, the little one doesn’t understand. He’s just playing around. Yi Yi, quickly apologize to your sister, okay?”
Li Yi clutched the remote control, turning to the butler with a puzzled expression. “Who is she? Why does she keep coming to our house and being so rude?”
“Don’t talk nonsense!” the butler snapped, quickly silencing Li Yi in front of Li Tang.
“This is Yi Yi’s home, and it’s also Sister Tangtang’s home,” the butler explained.
Li Yi scratched his head, still confused. “Her home? But there’s no room for her here, no toys, and no pictures of her. How can it be her home?”
The child’s innocent words left the old butler sweating profusely.
Convinced he had clarified the logic, Li Yi declared even more confidently to Li Tang, “This isn’t your home.”
“You’re right,” Li Tang replied calmly, a faint smile playing on her lips. She stepped forward and crushed the toy car under her foot. “This isn’t my home. I have my own home.”
