- Chapter 81.1 - Recollections of the Past - Little Fish and Cold Stone, Part 2
“Joy” ( huānxǐ) was the secret code that Hanshi (Cold Stone) and Xiaoyu (Little Fish) had set.
It was the countless times of rapture and rebellion in the clean sanctuary of the Buddhist land.
Hanshi couldn’t resist.
She pressed Xiaoyu’s smooth back, nearly losing all reason, kneading the soft body into her bones, tasting that tender lip.
A surge of heat stirred her few remaining senses. She heard the girl sobbing.
But they didn’t even have time to go to the couch.
A cold stone, a little fish—they were never meant to adhere to the norms of the mundane world.
Xiaoyu was tired from her rough handling, her eyelids wet and red, trembling as she lay sprawled in her arms.
Her voice was still innocent, but not as naive as before, “Do you miss me too…? But why didn’t you dare to come out and see me?”
“If I hadn’t gone and laughed with someone else, promised to enjoy myself with someone else, I wouldn’t have been able to catch you.”
Hanshi had always been poor with words, and at this moment, a deep, heavy coldness rose in her heart.
She didn’t know how to teach Xiaoyu what love was, so she could only brand her own mark onto the other person’s body again and again.
Making the girl flustered, her voice hoarse from crying, unable to think of “others.”
In the end, Xiaoyu was exhausted and leaned against the window frame, her waist shaking, her eyes veiled with a hazy watery sheen, calming down by the faint glow cast by the window.
The night was drawing to a close.
Xiaoyu was very forgetful; seeing the beautiful sunrise outside, she immediately forgot the excessive things Hanshi, who was embracing her from behind, had done.
Turning her head, she kissed the woman’s cheek without holding a grudge, her apricot eyes sparkling with joy, “Look quickly, the clouds are so beautiful!”
Hanshi’s ice-sealed shell melted with the shimmering gaze of Xiaoyu.
She docilely intertwined her neck with the girl’s; her cold, desolate chest was slowly filled by the other.
She heard the other person suddenly have a whimsical idea of giving her a name.
She said seeing the morning glow was a good omen, and perhaps the whole day would be sunny.
“Call you Gui Ji!” Xiaoyu proposed sweetly, and after speaking, she looked up at her nervously.
“Do you like it, pretty stone?”
Her chest felt as if many tiny flowers were blooming. Hanshi was speechless, only nodding obediently.
She liked it.
She liked… everything Xiaoyu bestowed upon her.
“But I don’t have a name yet,” Xiaoyu lowered her head in disappointment. “The carp in the pond all say, why does a fish need a name, but, having a name means being liked and remembered.”
“The good person I know calls me Immortal Trout! Does that mean like an immortal?”
Gui Ji opened her mouth slightly, “Like an immortal.”
“…Like, beautiful red clouds.”
Xiaoyu’s eyes sparkled, quietly repeating the two words that unintentionally slipped out of her mouth, “Red Clouds (Jiang Yun)?”
“I’ll be called Jiang Yun.” She smiled happily, so bright it made one’s heart burn.
“I am Gui Ji’s Jiang Yun!”
Gui Ji still remembered that day when the sky was filled with rosy light, Jiang Yun, enveloped in soft light, turned her head towards her, a gorgeous sight.
Hanshi was born without a heart.
But being melted by the gold leaf color flowing in the girl’s eyes, her heart suddenly resonated, and she had the illusion that she also had a heart.
Gui Ji was always unaware that the splendor of the morning glow foreshadowed continuous rain in the future.
The term Jiang Yun (Red Clouds) was inherently contradictory to Gui Ji (Returning to Clear Skies).
She accompanied Jiang Yun out of Taocun (Peach Village) in Xizhou, to further places in the Nine Provinces. From the lingering autumn leaves of Beizhou to the peach blossoms covering Zhongzhou, and then to the barren swamp of the Eastern Sea.
Jiang Yun and she found an isolated boat, gambled a jug of honey nectar, and lay back, counting the stars.
Gui Ji deliberately humored the forgetful Xiaoyu.
When Jiang Yun was drunk, she heard her hazy whisper, “A’Ji, hmm… Mother…”
Gui Ji’s heart melted completely, and she pulled the girl into her arms.
Was Xiaoyu feeling a filial attachment to her, like a blood relative?
If Jiang Yun wished it, she was certainly willing to act as Xiaoyu’s closest person. That way, no one else would ever divert Xiaoyu’s attention.
But Jiang Yun’s warm tears stained Gui Ji’s collar little by little.
Like a vulnerable fish fry in the lotus pond, she curled up in her arms, trying to absorb even a tiny bit of security.
Xiaoyu was caught in a nightmare, frowning and resisting a ferocious ancient dragon, muttering incoherently not to hurt her mother.
After a long while, cold sweat beaded on her forehead. She looked like she had been abandoned, her face pale, letting out only helpless sobs.
“Why, why did you leave me? The water pool, cold…”
“I was born strangely, so you don’t want me anymore…?”
Gui Ji’s breathing tightened with Xiaoyu’s words.
She only felt the tears at the corners of the girl’s eyes were piercing, and not knowing how to comfort her, she could only lean down and kiss away the salty wetness.
Helplessly playing the role that Jiang Yun revered, she coaxed, “…A’Ji is here.”
Gui Ji didn’t want Jiang Yun to recall the past; they were both lonely and didn’t know their origins, clinging to each other for warmth, and that was enough.
The most greedy thought she had about Xiaoyu was to become Xiaoyu’s unique family.
But how could the rosy light stop flowing just because Hanshi looked up at it?
Traveling through the Nine Provinces, Jiang Yun shed her former innocence at some point, becoming unrestrained and willful.
She learned to hide her inner thoughts, and after getting drunk, she rarely exposed her vulnerability to Gui Ji again.
Instead, with a flushed face, she joyfully recounted that there were originally no fish-dragons in this world, and after the Ancient Dragon race was annihilated, she would personally establish the Fish-Dragon race.
Gui Ji concealed her distraction in her eyes.
She vaguely wanted to ask, what about her?
The one named by Jiang Yun, the one whose every joy and sorrow was tied to Jiang Yun… what about her?
The little fish nestled in her arms had, at some unknown point, become a dazzling, gorgeous morning glow.
Her heart held the Nine Provinces, she wanted to destroy the ancient dragons, protect the peace of all beings, and even more, she wanted to establish the Fish-Dragon race.
And she was still a cold stone coiled at the bottom of the icy water.
She could only look up in vain as Jiang Yun flowed and circulated, unable to keep her, and even less able to grasp her.
Jiang Yun interrupted Gui Ji’s thoughts.
The charming, slightly tipsy girl, using her drunkenness, snuggled into her arms, her eyes misty.
She asked enticingly if she would like to be in love with her, and together, hatch little fish-dragons?
Gui Ji covered Jiang Yun’s lips with her own.
She trembled all over, giving rise to a shameful thought: if only she could tie Xiaoyu up.
Tied to her side, only looking at her, only smiling brightly at her.
Hadn’t Xiaoyu also said it?
Jiang Yun is Gui Ji’s Jiang Yun.
But after a night of intimacy, Gui Ji woke up to find her side empty.
Her whole body felt crushed; she realized that Jiang Yun had cast a spell on her.
She didn’t know how many days she had slept, nor what Xiaoyu had gone to do.
Gui Ji found the blood jade pendant Jiang Yun had left her.
Inside, there were a few words Xiaoyu had left for her.
Jiang Yun had gone alone to Taocun to fight the Ancient Dragon race, intending to kill the only kin she had in the world to protect the Nine Provinces from invasion.
It was a near-fatal risk, and she deliberately hid it from her, not wanting her to be involved in danger.
The girl, in a red skirt, smiled brightly, “A’Ji, if I return, let’s get married, okay?”
“Right there… in Taocun. In the place where we reunited.”
Gui Ji rushed to Taocun, nearly driven mad.
She saw blood flowing like a river, and dark clouds gathering into a vortex.
Jiang Yun’s figure was slender, yet she struggled to pierce her plain sword into the massive body of the ancient dragon, pulling it out from beneath the inverse scale on its throat.
After countless days of fierce battle, Jiang Yun had won.
The ordinary people surrounding Taocun cheered with joy, but only Gui Ji walked against the crowd, catching the exhausted Jiang Yun as she fell.
But no one knew that the aftermath of the ancient dragon, which had dominated the world for over a thousand years, contained blood energy of slaughter when it exploded.
Or rather, demonic energy.
Gui Ji felt a metallic taste in her throat, silently blocking the blow for Jiang Yun.
Jiang Yun’s voice was weak, and she hadn’t noticed, only smiling at Gui Ji, “A’Ji…?”
“Did you come to pick me up for our wedding?”
Gui Ji’s eyes were bloodshot; the pure demonic energy injected into her heart meridian felt as if it was being forcefully split in half.
One half, due to the ancient dragon’s malice, fell into the abyss, craving mass slaughter.
She even wanted to turn Jiang Yun into a corpse to keep her by her side forever.
The other half, however, managed to maintain clarity because of Jiang Yun’s pure gaze.
Gui Ji lowered her head, torn between the two conflicting parts of her soul, and managed to force a slight curve onto her lips, “I… came… to pick you up.”
“Shall we get married… on the barren mountain?”
This time, the little fish wouldn’t run away again.
She would soon be Jiang Yun’s only family in this world.
