- Chapter 30 - Rolled in the Quilt Little Fish should hate her for this.
Chu Zhao clutched the corner of the quilt, her chest still thumping, her eyes warm but silent.
Si Jing immediately sensed the change, frowned slightly, put the medicine bowl down, and asked, “What’s wrong?”
The snow-white sleeve, tinged with the bitter scent of the medicine, brushed past. The woman leaned in, her delicate palm caressing Chu Zhao’s forehead.
After a moment’s pause, it slowly moved to her neck.
Chu Zhao’s body instantly shuddered. She tilted her head to bite the woman’s hand, her eyes glistening with tumultuous water. “Don’t touch Ah Chu!”
Si Jing’s eyes narrowed slightly.
She let Chu Zhao bite her once, then silently withdrew her hand, a barely perceptible trace of confusion in her expression.
But it wasn’t long before her emotions were concealed, and her usual serene coolness returned.
The atmosphere in the bedchamber was still.
Chu Zhao didn’t hear the woman speak for a long time, only the crisp, pleasant clinking of the spoon against the bowl.
The quilt she was hiding in carried a fresh, cool scent, which helped her sober up considerably. She quietly peeked out and saw Si Jing in the dim light, holding a porcelain spoon and gently stirring the medicine.
The woman’s Taoist robe was pristine white, her skin fair. As she quietly looked down, the red marks on her lips and fingertips were particularly noticeable.
It was unlike her usually aloof and quiet demeanor on the viewing platform earlier today; the candlelight softened her, lending her a touch of tenderness.
Seeing Chu Zhao look over, she stopped stirring, her gaze enveloping the girl. “Do you want to drink it now?”
Chu Zhao pursed her lips, a little resistant.
Only weak humans drank medicine. She was a great yao (demon/spirit), with the ability to heal herself. If she drank medicine, she would definitely be laughed at.
But her tongue unintentionally licked her lips, and a bitter, astringent taste immediately spread. She spat several times, wrinkling her brow. “It’s so bitter.”
Si Jing glanced at her and said softly, “I already fed you one spoonful just now.”
“Bad Zhi Zhi!” Chu Zhao was a little annoyed.
Yet, after staring at the red mark on the beauty’s lips for a long time, her curiosity got the better of her.
She sat up, moved closer to examine it, and tenderly stroked it. “Did… did you drink it too? Was it too hot? Did it burn your lips red?”
Si Jing’s eyelashes fluttered subtly.
She remained silent, only scooping up a spoonful of the bitter medicine and offering it to Chu Zhao’s lips.
Chu Zhao turned her head away and flung herself into the woman’s arms. Just like in the nightmare, she cupped her face, blinking her eyes. “One kiss, then one sip. Can I?”
The bad dream was fake. She had recognized that the quiet, beautiful woman in front of her was the niangzi (wife/lover) she adored.
What was wrong with kissing her niangzi?
As soon as the words left her mouth, she pecked the other woman’s light pink lips before she could react.
So bitter! The taste was exactly the same as the one on her own lips.
Chu Zhao’s cheeks wrinkled. She grabbed the corner of the quilt, pondering hard and confused, when she suddenly saw Si Jing quickly retreat, her chest rising and falling.
Clang! The porcelain bowl in the woman’s hand collided with the table, making a dull sound.
Si Jing did not look at Chu Zhao again, only showing her back. The flickering candlelight cast a light blush on her earlobes.
“…Presumptuous.”
Chu Zhao thought Si Jing was about to open the door and leave, and felt a surge of panic and grievance.
She had just had a nightmare; she didn’t want to be alone here.
Hurriedly throwing off the quilt, she ran off the bed barefoot and wrapped her arms around the other’s slender waist. “Zhi Zhi, don’t go. I… I’ll drink the medicine, I will.”
She picked up the small bowl and gulped it all down. The bitterness made her stomp her feet, and her eyes welled up with tears, looking quite pathetic.
She rubbed her eyes, and a small piece of sweet cake was suddenly offered to her lips.
Chu Zhao took it in her mouth and chewed. The sweetness seeped into her heart, and she narrowed her eyes, finally managing a smile.
Suddenly, her feet left the ground. She was lifted and carried back into the quilt.
Si Jing stepped back a few paces, her sleeves gently brushing against Chu Zhao’s arm and waist, carrying a cool scent.
She glanced at the girl’s soft lips, now colored by the hot medicine. She looked away, perhaps considering something.
“Rest well on the bed,” she said softly. “I’ll go to the sword case tonight.”
She blew out the flickering candle. In the dense darkness, the heat that had lingered in her arms from holding the soft body of the girl dissipated.
Si Jing heard rustling from the bed but could still feel a gaze tightly following her.
The little fish seemed afraid she would leave again, so she clutched the quilt, restraining herself from getting closer.
Si Jing lowered her eyes, using the cold snowlight from outside the window to cool her mind.
She didn’t know… why she had acted that way just now.
Chu Zhao had looked docile when she was asleep. After feeding her one spoonful of medicine, the liquid spilled, and she should have wiped it off with a soft cloth.
But when her eyes moved to the girl, the sensual scene from last night had not disappeared with the waking dream.
She recalled the sight of the girl curled up naked in her arms, her eyes shimmering, whimpering softly with Si Jing’s movements.
The white porcelain bowl holding the medicine warmed her palm. Si Jing felt an absurd similarity to the warm, soft, snow-white body nestled in her arms.
If she got closer, if she was more intimate, if she repeated the things in the Sea of Consciousness that had left her confused and bewildered—
Could she feel that same heart-thumping sensation again?
In the quiet atmosphere, distracting thoughts spread like wild grass.
The candlelight rippled. She placed her hand on her chest and leaned over.
So soft.
It was like the fluffy, fine snow that fell into her palm during winter on Green Peak.
Yet it carried a heat that made the snow melt quickly, hotter than the warm medicine, rushing along her spine all the way to her cold fingertips.
But the girl suddenly frowned in her sleep and bit her, resisting.
In the darkness, Si Jing’s fingertip touched her lips.
Little Fish should hate her for this.
Even she was reluctant to be intimate with others in such a way, let alone a yao who did not hide her true nature.
And from leaning in to hastily retreating, Si Jing’s chest remained utterly still.
Even when their lips touched, if Little Fish didn’t enter the Sea of Consciousness… it would be hard for her to feel that throbbing sensation again.
Lying in the sword case, Si Jing placed her hands crossed over her body.
In her neck and collar, it felt as if moist water was flowing, but when she lifted her hand to check, it was just her imagination.
The little fish yao was sick and was wary of her feigned severity of “presumptuous.” Why would she come?
She closed her eyes and silently recited the Heart Cleansing Incantation.
But just as her lips barely moved, her waist was suddenly wrapped by a soft, delicate arm.
Chu Zhao, wrapped in the quilt, nestled into her arms, swimming around like she was in a water tank, fearlessly climbing onto her body.
After a bout of rustling, she restlessly rubbed her soft lips against Si Jing’s exposed skin, then quietly nudged her chest.
Since Si Jing didn’t have a normal person’s body temperature and kept her breath to a minimum, Chu Zhao thought she was asleep.
“Why… why can’t I get in,” Chu Zhao muttered worriedly and confusedly, her voice soft like snow fluff.
Could it be that she had to turn back into a fish?
Suddenly, her waist was gently clasped by the person beneath her.
Chu Zhao froze.
In the faint light reflecting from the snow outside the window, she saw a pair of clear, cold eyes.
They were indifferent and clear, devoid of any emotion, clearly wide awake.
“…” Si Jing didn’t speak, only observing her with those strikingly beautiful eyes.
Chu Zhao was now sitting astride the beauty, unable to advance or retreat, with nowhere to run.
She could only pretend to be a soft, thick quilt, lying on the woman. “I’m afraid you’ll catch a cold too. My body is warm, so I’ll… reluctantly help warm up the sword case!”
Si Jing’s pale peach blossom eyes lingered on her face for a moment. “…Is that so?”
An arm silently wrapped around her back, pulling her, quilt and all, into her embrace.
Chu Zhao peeked out from the quilt roll.
Seeing the beauty silently close her eyes, an alluring look of letting her have her way, she immediately grew restless again.
She leaned toward the shallow lips she hadn’t kissed enough earlier, examined them for a moment, and lightly licked them with her tongue.
It was still slightly bitter, but soon, it was completely covered with her scent and the taste of the sweet cake.
Did the beauty secretly drink her medicine just now? Did she drink what was in the bowl, or what was on her lips?
Thinking of the latter possibility, Chu Zhao’s heart thumped, and she couldn’t help but smile slightly.
“In tomorrow’s talisman class, I will lecture on the Lightning Descent Talisman,” the woman suddenly said.
Chu Zhao was startled. She propped herself up and blinked confusedly in the darkness.
Suddenly, she seemed to recall something and was struck by a lightning bolt of realization.
“You… you want to bully Ah Chu again!” she cried out, biting her lip in grievance.
…She was most afraid of thunder.
The desolate mountains were close to the Silent Sea, where fierce lightning strikes often occurred. For some reason, they always seemed to follow and strike her, causing her large water pit to crackle and groan, and her doorkeeper shrimp to scurry away, their whiskers scorched black.
Whenever this happened, Chu Zhao would revert to her original form, tremble, and hide in her seashell bed, closing the shell until not a sliver of a gap remained.
But the sound of thunder would still pierce her ears, keeping her awake all night.
Chu Zhao immediately stopped thinking about why Si Jing’s lips were bitter or wanting to unlock the beauty’s heart. She instantly wanted to flee far away.
The beauty looked like she was carved from ice and snow on the surface, but her heart was like a serpent’s. She was indeed the bad immortal cultivator her niangzis warned her about!
Maybe… she even had some strange fetish for cooking fish but not liking to eat it.
Unfortunately, she was tightly wrapped in the quilt roll and couldn’t break free for a moment.
Si Jing only felt a commotion on her body.
Even when sick, the little fish was full of energy, scolding her as a “bad beauty” in a soft voice, trying to break free from her arms and escape the sword case.
In the moonlight, she glimpsed the girl’s annoyed, plump cheek.
“If you don’t want this,” Si Jing’s long eyelashes drooped. She had anticipated this and spoke,
“Every night, you must stay with me in the sword case.”
“Can… can you do that?”
Chu Zhao stopped struggling.
She quietly chewed on the woman’s words for a long time, then tilted her head in confusion.
Suddenly, her almond eyes widened, and a light began to shine in them.
Joy instantly overwhelmed her shame and annoyance. Chu Zhao leaned close to the beauty and made a smacking sound, pecking her ice-cold, jade-like cheek.
“Ah Chu is willing!” she replied sweetly.
Isn’t this just a subtle request to cultivate with her?
She knew it; Si Jing was just trying to scare her, but in reality, she had long been smitten with her.
After speaking, she felt she had agreed too easily, so she hummed softly, feigning a reluctant look. “The sword case is too cold. You don’t want to be alone, do you? Hmph, well, then I’ll condescend to sleep with you.”
Si Jing embraced her waist and gently pressed her down, her voice winding around her ear. “Can you rest now?”
Chu Zhao was a little disappointed and struggled a few times.
…But they hadn’t cultivated together yet.
Perhaps because she was sick or because she had been too exhausted recently, she tried with all her might to turn back into her fish body but found she couldn’t.
Frustrated, she continued to nudge the beauty’s soft chest with her head, which also had no effect. Her eyelids, however, began to droop sleepily first.
She still wanted Si Jing to speak softly to her, and they could do those things that made her back ache but felt comfortable.
Only then could Chu Zhao catch a hint of emotion, like melting profound ice, in the woman’s indifferent eyes.
Just like… how her niangzis looked at her.
If they could keep cultivating together, would the beauty like her a little more?
She could become her niangzi, her yao companion.
The moonlight was hazy, filtered through the paper window, painting the bedchamber with a thin, white jade glaze.
There was no more sound in her ears.
Si Jing looked down. The girl was sleeping soundly, nestled in her arms, but was murmuring unclear words.
They were nothing but wild and inappropriate phrases, like “cultivation” and “kissing.”
But she knew, deep down, that a person and a yao were absolutely impossible.
Her chest was still deathly silent and empty. Even during her exchange with Chu Zhao just now, no ripple had been stirred.
Suggesting that the little fish be bound to her, to the sword case, was merely to satisfy her base and unworthy desire.
To keep Chu Zhao trapped in her Sea of Consciousness, serving only as the trigger for her to feel the normal human heart-thumping sensation.
Si Jing closed her eyes.
Practicing the Path of Emotionlessness, she knew better than anyone.
She must not be moved by emotion, or else her Dao Heart would shatter, and her cultivation would be utterly destroyed.
