- Chapter 26 - The Ice Bangle, A Token of Love
When she pushed open the door to her sleeping quarters, the moonlight was already hanging on the branches.
Snow floated on the clouds between the peaks, and the forest canopy was bright and clear.
Inside the quarters, the little fish sank to the bottom of the water tank, silent, but its guileless, endearing round eyes were open, making it impossible to tell if it was awake or asleep.
Si Jing hung her outer robe on the rack and turned to sit down at the table.
She deliberately avoided looking at the little fish.
She had meditated for a little longer than usual today, so she returned a bit late, and hadn’t had time to tidy up the previous mess.
The bamboo scroll storybook on the table had been hastily rolled up before she left, but a cursory glance could still catch a glimpse of the suggestive words in the creases and corners.
Si Jing frowned, and without a word, she ignited the bamboo scroll. A gentle fire flickered in her eyes.
Everything was quiet.
But the flame woke up the little red fish in the water tank.
Chu Zhao curled her tail and, through the tank wall, groggily pecked at the warm-looking spiritual fire.
Suddenly realizing something, she woke up and saw the edges of the tantalizing nude beauty pictures she adored curling up as they burned.
“No, you can’t burn it!” Chu Zhao angrily jumped up, feeling extreme heartbreak.
She had only studied it a few times and hadn’t learned from it yet.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t escape the confines of her small water tank at the moment and could only watch helplessly as her favorite storybook turned to a pile of floating ash.
“Mean Zhi Zhi, I’ll never be friends with you again!” Chu Zhao was so angry she flipped onto her belly.
Perhaps due to empathy, or perhaps because she had detained the little fish for a whole day, Si Jing felt as if a heavy stone was pressing on her chest.
It was a mix of frustration and anger, coupled with a very deeply buried feeling of grievance.
She had always been without feeling and had never experienced ordinary human emotions.
In a daze, she raised her hand and suspended it over the small tank, letting instinct take over, and removed the restriction.
Chu Zhao seized the opportunity and immediately leaped out, like a soft, moist cloud of mist, happily flicking her crystalline tail fins.
Demons always seek revenge; she was still annoyed about being imprisoned and having her storybook burned by the woman. She puffed out her cheeks and aimed a bite at the other party’s finger.
But she didn’t succeed.
By the time she realized what was happening, Chu Zhao felt a cold chill on her body.
It wasn’t painful, it felt like she had been put in a bracelet made of ice.
She turned her head to look and saw that, at some point, Si Jing’s right pinky finger was also wearing a tail ring condensed from frost.
“This object is woven from my spiritual power; if you encounter danger, I can sense it,” Si Jing spoke.
“Since you don’t like staying in the water tank, I can only use this object to restrain you.”
She knew she couldn’t let this demoness run wild within the sect of Emerald Peak, but… because of the empathy, she also couldn’t allow the demoness to fall into danger, so she could only resort to this measure.
Chu Zhao didn’t hear a word of it.
“Is this a token of love?” She twisted her soft, slippery body, using the water reflection in the tank to look at herself. Her scales were already brilliant like morning glow, and with the ice jade bangle on, they reflected an even more beautiful radiance.
Quickly tossing the thought of biting the woman out of her mind, the little fish hopped into Si Jing’s palm and said sweetly, “My Lady, you are so good to me!”
The palm felt cool, sticky, and slick. Si Jing’s long lashes trembled, and she flattened her palm.
The little fish immediately tumbled down her finger bones.
It bumped against the table, feeling a bit dizzy. It peered up at her, its soft body encased in the ice bangle, looking bewildered.
A plate of plum blossom pastry was pushed across the table, and then the candlelight was extinguished.
“The sect assessment is in two days, and I won’t have time to look after you. Don’t disturb the other disciples on the peak lately.” The woman’s voice was hidden in the darkness, like fine snow brushing past the ear. “Go find your own food.”
In the darkness, Chu Zhao saw that Si Jing had slept inside that huge profound iron sword case again.
Based on her recent observations, whenever the beauty was troubled or unhappy, she would burrow inside there.
After a sleep, she would return to her cold, indifferent self, and her memory would also be somewhat diminished.
Hearing Si Jing’s breathing gradually stabilize, Chu Zhao couldn’t wait to transform into her human form.
Sitting on the edge of the table, she swung her snow-white legs, picked up a piece of plum blossom pastry from the plate, and bit into it heartily, her cheeks puffed out.
The light outside was hazy. She opened her eyes wide and examined the ice bangle on her wrist, growing happier the more she looked at it.
The beauty must certainly be in love with her, but due to the strict rules of the Xuanmen sect, she dared not say it openly, so she hid her feelings. Otherwise, why would she give her an engagement gift after only one dual cultivation?
What a pity, right after getting engaged, she had to go to the sect for some “Kao He” (assessment), leaving her alone to keep an empty room.
Chu Zhao gave a soft hum, jumped off the table, and picked up the slightly disheveled vermilion skirt that had been discarded last night and put it on.
Her peripheral vision caught sight of a blood jade fish pendant that had rolled into the corner, gleaming faintly in the darkness. Her eyes immediately lit up.
She picked it up, fastened it to her waist, turned around to examine it, and was extremely satisfied.
Pushing open the door, she shut the tranquility inside the room.
Before her lay green mountains, mist coiling, smoke and clouds vast. Bronze bells hung from the eaves, gently swaying in the deep night, their crisp sound pleasant to the ear.
The scenery of Fish Donkey Peak was not inferior to her own cave dwelling.
Chu Zhao curiously explored, reaching out to touch the drooping branches, causing the accumulated snow to rustle down and melt on her collarbone, soft, wet, and cold.
Lifting her eyes again, she caught sight of a figure.
It seemed to be an immortal cultivator dressed in a pale blue Taoist robe, with a gentle demeanor, holding her lapel close to her chest.
But the area was bulky and seemed to be moving.
A cluster of a brightly patterned coral suddenly poked out, its tentacles curling up, whispering.
Xiao Wan gently covered it with her palm, murmuring as if to herself, “…Why are you trembling?”
As the words fell, her path was suddenly blocked by a young girl who seemed to have materialized from nowhere.
She looked up. The girl was dressed in a light gauze vermilion skirt, her features like a peach blossom, her apricot eyes holding fragments of golden foil light, her skin whiter than the fresh snow on the peaks, and her figure was delicate and charming.
At this moment, she was tightly furrowing her brows, her voice delicate and filled with guarded annoyance, “Nasty immortal cultivator, quickly let go of my Lady!”
Chu Zhao recognized at a glance that the one in Xiao Wan’s bosom was her Shanhun Lady who had been lost for half a month.
“May I ask who you are?” Xiao Wan asked, pursing her lips.
She had been intelligent since childhood with a photographic memory. After scanning the girl’s beautiful face, she already felt a three-tenths familiarity and noticed the fish jade pendant hanging from the girl’s slender waist.
She thought of the fire outside and the koi fish demon that had jumped out of the water tank.
Chu Zhao didn’t respond.
Anxious and worried, she took a couple of steps closer and directly pulled Shanhun out of Xiao Wan’s lapel.
“Lady said she’s cold, her tentacles are about to freeze up!” The girl wrapped the coral tightly in her robe, her pink jade eyes wide, seemingly very angry. “Bad person, can’t you hear her!”
“I…” Xiao Wan was always an accommodating person who would always answer when spoken to, and she couldn’t help but feel helpless now.
“I apologize.”
She couldn’t understand the demon’s language.
Hearing this, the coral demon cautiously poked its head out from Chu Zhao’s robe.
First, it obediently rubbed against Chu Zhao’s hand, then seeing Xiao Wan’s current appearance, it anxiously whimpered.
Xiao Wan curved her lips and extended a hand towards it.
Shanhun immediately struggled out of Chu Zhao’s embrace and, treading on its sticky, soft tentacles, carefully climbed back into the other person’s palm.
Chu Zhao was incredulous, her voice trembling, filled with a tide of grievance, “Lady…”
“This… Fellow Taoist.” Xiao Wan’s heart confirmed the guess that the tearful girl before her was the fish demon, and she offered comfort.
“It was my lack of consideration not to have taken good care of this little demon. I will take her back to my sleeping quarters now, alright?”
Chu Zhao puffed out her cheeks, about to refuse, but then heard Shanhun in the other’s arms speaking with a whimper, trying to explain something urgently.
She was still very unwilling but listened carefully to what Shanhun was saying.
She nodded occasionally, biting her lip and glancing at Xiao Wan a few times.
“Hmph…” Chu Zhao finally relented. “Then I’ll temporarily allow you to look after my Lady!”
“What’s so great about a mere human? In a hundred years, Lady will be mine again.” She still muttered softly.
Xiao Wan merely smiled, looking at her gently.
The little fish demon senior before her had slightly strong cultivation fluctuations, and she couldn’t discern her realm for a moment. But in her heart, she was no different from the coral demon she had found in the back mountain.
In the eyes of other Xuanmen members, demons commit many evils, but she held no prejudice, always viewing them as beings that were merely pampered and ignorant, like a blank slate.
It was just that the coral she found was weaker and needed her care.
Once she broke through the Foundation Establishment stage and became a Golden Core cultivator, her lifespan would extend, and she would no longer be constrained by the natural laws of birth, aging, sickness, and death of mortals, allowing for long-term companionship.
Chu Zhao felt her face flush under the gaze of the immortal cultivator girl.
She reached out and tugged on the other’s azure-colored sash. “No, no, I’m not reassured about Lady. I want to go with you.”
Actually… it was just that Fish Donkey Peak was too cold.
After only a little while on the snowy stone steps, she already felt frost forming on her exposed skin.
Xiao Wan did not refuse.
She took out her flying sword, and seeing the girl still standing in place, she curved her eyes and pulled her onto the sword.
“It just so happens that I also have a formation involving demon techniques that I need advice on from a senior.”
“Fellow Taoist” was upgraded to “Senior,” and Chu Zhao felt a sense of pride and found it quite agreeable.
Fine snow clung to her hair, making her black hair and rosy lips stand out, but it also made her stomp her feet on the flying sword. “Then let’s hurry up, don’t let Shanhun Lady get frozen.”
Xiao Wan nodded slightly, concentrating on controlling the sword, but suddenly, she looked troubled.
She closed her eyes and silently recited the sword art again.
She had almost never failed in her sword manipulation technique.
But tonight, for some unknown reason, after several attempts, the sword she spent every day with gave no response.
“Did you forget how to make the sword fly?” Chu Zhao asked, confused.
With a thought, the sword beneath their feet emitted a rich crimson light, wobbled, and quickly ascended.
The flying sword hummed, seemingly responding to the girl’s call. It abruptly plunged into the thick night mist on the mountainside of Emerald Peak, drawing a winding afterimage in the pale blue sky.
The wind howled.
A look of deep thought flashed in Xiao Wan’s eyes. She looked at the crimson-skirted girl at the tip of the sword, who was curiously gazing around, leaving only her back visible.
There were only two possibilities for being able to command a flying sword already acknowledged by another cultivator.
One was that the little fish demon before her was of a profound realm, far surpassing hers, with a demonic power at least comparable to the Nascent Soul stage.
The other was that the girl possessed an extraordinary innate talent, one that garnered affinity, reverence, and even awe from all swords.
Xiao Wan had only seen the latter situation in one person: the sect leader of Mount Kunlun in Northern Zhou, the current number one in the Xuanmen, Washing Clarity Immortal Master.
“Now you know how powerful I am, right?” Chu Zhao tugged on the sleeve she had folded across her chest.
Xiao Wan regained her senses and couldn’t help but smile at the girl’s gesture for praise. “I am inferior indeed.”
“However, Senior,” she turned her head, looking into the distance.
“My sleeping quarters seem to be in the opposite direction.”
The flying sword stopped abruptly in mid-air.
It took a turn, and with a huff of indignation, flew toward the direction Xiao Wan indicated.
At this moment, Yuan Ling and Shen Susu were just descending from the Sword Forging Cliff at the peak.
Having finished their sword punishment for the day, even Ah Qing and Tao Miao had buried their heads in their feathers to sleep.
Shen Susu rubbed her sore wrist, feeling like all the energy had been drained from her body.
Yuan Ling was about to say something to comfort her when she suddenly saw a flash of red light below the stone steps, on the mountainside, like a flamboyant feather streaking across the night sky.
“A disaster of bloody light,” Shen Susu sighed tragically.
Yuan Ling turned her head to look at her and softly refuted, “No, isn’t it an auspicious sign?”
She saw that the red light was mixed with the somewhat familiar color of the fish jade talisman.
She lowered her head, pursing her lips slightly, a flicker of reminiscence passing through her eyes.
For some reason, she was again reminded of the charming and unrestrained girl in the vermilion skirt she had met in Yingchuan City.
Chu Zhao sat on the couch in Xiao Wan’s sleeping quarters, bored, her eyes darting around.
The room was not much different from Si Jing’s, only with more small items that carried the breath of a living person, and it was in no way comparable to her own luxurious cave dwelling.
A cup of lotus tea was suddenly handed into her embrace.
It seemed to have honey mixed in; a sweet, clear aroma filled her nostrils.
Chu Zhao’s apricot eyes brightened. She gulped it down, a trace of moisture clinging to her pink lips, and her body warmed up.
After handing her the tea, Xiao Wan turned around and placed Shanhun into the carefully arranged small water tank.
She expertly applied a talisman to make the water warm.
The little coral poked its head out, whimpering comfortably, its tentacles creeping up her fingertips.
Chu Zhao suddenly felt that the tea she had just drunk was no longer sweet.
She gave a soft huff, her chest tightening, and glared at Xiao Wan several times.
Xiao Wan noticed the gaze directed at her and smiled lightly, knowing that this little fish demon senior was probably feeling jealous.
Picking up a stack of ancient scrolls from beside her, she walked over and knelt in front of Chu Zhao, her voice gentle, “Senior, please look at this.”
She opened the scroll, which was filled with ancient characters that Chu Zhao couldn’t understand, looking like earthworms crawling.
She pondered hard, frowning and staring for a long time, then poked it with her fingertip.
Were these ink stains really not flattened mealworms?
Xiao Wan unrolled a scroll that had illustrations, examined it for a moment, and said softly, “This is a fragment of a secret tradition left by the Fish Dragon Clan during their prosperity over a thousand years ago. I wanted… to ask Senior to inject a trace of demonic power to help me activate the formation.”
She turned around, her gaze soft, focused on the coral demon spreading out comfortably in the warm water.
“If so, I can bond with her.”
Chu Zhao was half-understanding. Unfamiliar words like “Fish Dragon Clan” and “Secret Technique” quickly flashed through her mind like flowing water.
Only the last two words mentioned by Xiao Wan remained.
— Bonding (Jie Qi).
Is that the thing that can only be done once in a lifetime with the person you love?
The cold, graceful, and beautiful face of the woman suddenly appeared before her eyes.
Chu Zhao touched the slightly cool plain ice bangle on her wrist.
Her face felt hot. She remembered how Si Jing had embraced her last night, obeying her every wish, and pecking at her collarbone.
Blushing, she lowered her head and squirmed for a moment, then tugged on Xiao Wan’s sleeve, her apricot eyes lightly flashing.
“C-Chu also wants to learn, can I?”
