- Chapter 15 - The Mirror's Surface – Harboring Undue Thoughts for a Demon
The faint sound of a pearl hitting the ground was almost imperceptible.
It was like the dead, empty silence that accompanied the little red fish’s separation from the body.
“I cannot perceive your cultivation or your realm, but seeing your sword intent, you must be greatly favored, pure and upright, the one countless junior disciples rely on,” Shan Hu’s voice carried a hint of mockery.
“How could you, then, harbor undue thoughts for a mere demon?”
Si Jìng’s voice revealed no emotion, “What do you intend to do to her?”
She knew the demon behind her was skilled at weaving illusions, and the one speaking now was merely a wisp of fabricated demonic energy.
Shan Hu simply laughed, “Do immortal cultivators even care about the fate of us demons? I thought you were all cold-hearted, selfish people.”
“Just like… the icy surface of your mirror-like sea of consciousness.”
The woman’s sea of consciousness was empty; even the demon, who excelled at manipulating people’s minds, could not hear a single echo.
Shan Hu curled her lips charmingly, her eyes glistening, and she glanced towards the dead, silent courtyard behind her, her gaze holding a hint of glee.
“But still, I must thank the Immortal Master for clearing this courtyard of filth for me. Before I controlled them, they were all living people, you know. Slaughtered by their fellow Xuanmen disciples, I wonder if they can rest in peace?”
Si Jìng did not want to listen to the demon’s tempting, mind-shaking words. She stepped directly forward, blocking the bizarre wedding sedan that led to an unknown destination.
As she got closer, she could finally hear Chu Zhao’s sleep-talking.
The girl, adorned beautifully with pearls and a rich skirt, was frowning tightly, pitifully and aggrievedly pleading, “Mistress, Mistress don’t go!”
“Ah’Chu won’t eat rice cakes anymore, Mistress stay with me…”
“She regards you as a very important person,” Si Jìng spoke.
Shan Hu’s gaze lingered on Chu Zhao’s fair, tender cheek, her voice full of affection, “Ah’Chu is so lovable, and I am very fond of her too.”
After looking gently for a moment, she lightly shifted her gaze, “It was… I who deceived her.”
Seizing the moment the demon’s mind seemed lost in thought, Si Jìng swiftly gripped the wrist of the girl inside the sedan. She silently recited a spell, and a cold, clear spiritual energy flowed out, intending to rescue Chu Zhao.
But the girl’s wrist was weightless and insubstantial; the moment Si Jìng touched it, it dissipated into a thin wisp of mist.
The sedan bearers and the wedding sedan vanished into thin air with her movement.
Everything before her was still an illusion, the truth of which was unknown.
“Only now do you think to come to her rescue?” The bewitchingly beautiful demon behind her chuckled softly.
“But why is it that in Yingchuan City, full of immortal cultivators, no one paid attention to the ridiculous rumor of the water demon taking a bride, and no one cared how many ordinary women drowned, their souls incomplete and unable to reincarnate?”
She still stood in her original spot, her beautiful face appearing utterly lost and somewhat desolate.
“You are right. My sister’s soul scattered today when we were watching the spring play.”
“She clearly said she would buy me the best tanghulu in Yingchuan City after the show. But the moment she stepped into the sunlight, her figure could no longer be found.”
Shan Hu lowered her face, her voice soft and smooth, yet revealing a hint of pathological madness.
“The sunlight was an illusion I created with demonic energy; it wouldn’t harm her soul. Today was also the happiest day she ever told me about, so for half a year, I’ve replayed it daily.”
“…But why did she abandon me again?”
Si Jìng stood in the mist, seeing blood-tears flow down Shan Hu’s cheeks, the swirling demonic energy behind her seeming to solidify.
“But I won’t let my sister wait too long.” Shan Hu raised a smile eerily similar to Lín Niang’s (Lín Niang is likely the sister), graceful and gentle.
“I have accumulated many mortal souls again. This time, the sister I forge will stay with me a little longer, won’t she?”
She looked up towards the north, in the direction of the Yuelai Inn, and her lips curled slightly.
“Beneath that pool of water north of the city, correct?” Si Jìng lowered her eyes and spoke softly.
“The Ice Spirit Pattern Jade Bed, which has the effect of condensing and reshaping souls, and the Jiaoren Mermaid Oil Lamp, which can prevent souls from scattering.”
That day, before Chu Zhao stumbled in, what she had slain was merely a decoy called “the water demon.”
Shan Hu had impersonated the water demon, covering Yingchuan City in a daytime illusion. Ordinary people caught in it had their souls extracted to reshape Lín Niang’s appearance when she was alive.
This cycle had turned the prosperous small city into the demon-infested ghost town it was now.
There was no response.
Shan Hu’s illusion had already shattered. The mist dispersed, and Yingchuan City returned to its original dead and ruined state.
Si Jìng bent down again, picked up the pearl from the ground, and dusted it off.
The one Shan Hu intended to refine this time… would be Chu Zhao.
That noisy, spoiled little red fish who had no connection to Yingchuan City.
The woman unconsciously clenched her fingers.
When she came back to her senses, the pearl in her palm had already been crushed into dust, floating away with the wind.
[Scene Shift]
Chu Zhao felt heavy on her head and body.
Wearily, she opened her eyes and found herself sleeping on a large, cold, glowing jade stone.
She had eaten too much before falling asleep, and her little belly was still round. A piece of rice cake with red dates was still clutched in her arms, though it was now completely cold.
Shivering from the cold jade bed, Chu Zhao quietly hopped down and looked around.
The jade chamber was sealed on all four sides. The Jiaoren oil lamp burned steadily, which seemed a little familiar.
As she turned her head out of curiosity, she suddenly heard the clinking sound of tassels near her ear.
Chu Zhao used the steaming hot spring water next to her as a mirror and discovered she was wearing a gold-filigree phoenix crown on her head and an extremely delicate, deep-red dress. The stitching was fine, and the sleeves were embroidered with beautiful birds.
“Ah’Chu, are you awake?” A soft voice asked from behind her.
Chu Zhao immediately recognized Shan Hu’s voice.
She turned around and snuggled into the woman’s fragrant embrace, speaking sweetly, “Mistress, Ah’Chu missed you!”
“I missed Ah’Chu too.” Shan Hu wrapped an arm around her waist, “The beautiful clothes you’ve always wished for, I bought them at the market and put them on you. Does Ah’Chu like them?”
Chu Zhao was never one to hide her feelings and nodded gleefully, “I like them.”
She must have fallen asleep because she was full and the opera was long and incomprehensible. Mistress Shan Hu had prepared a surprise for her.
She was a bit disappointed that she wasn’t in her true form right now, otherwise, she would definitely wag her tail and splash water to show Shan Hu!
“Mistress, when are we going back to the big water pit? After my cultivation is restored, I heal Pang Xie and Hai Dai, and condense my demon core, I’ll be able to protect you again,” Chu Zhao said excitedly.
“Ah’Chu goes back first,” Shan Hu stroked her soft hair, her gaze moving to a spot not far away, “I still have some things to do.”
“Oh…” Chu Zhao lowered her head, a little disappointed.
Mistress Shan Hu was always very busy, only spending a few days each month sleeping with her in the cave dwelling.
However, she never forced her mistresses; she wanted all the beauties in her cave dwelling to be happy.
Following Shan Hu’s gaze, she saw a familiar face, and Chu Zhao’s eyes widened in confusion.
She squatted down in front of the girl, raised a hand to pinch the other’s soft cheek, and said, both surprised and delighted, “Mistress, I’ve met this person before!”
Yuan Ling’s eyes were tightly closed, her breathing weak, and there was a faint, almost imperceptible bloodstain on the corner of her lips.
“Is that so?” Shan Hu was always very patient with Chu Zhao and spoke gently.
“She’s just a female cultivator who hasn’t even reached the Foundation Establishment stage. Not worth Ah’Chu’s attention.”
She summoned a wisp of thin mist, which lifted the unconscious Yuan Ling onto the ice jade bed.
The girl’s pale lips were instantly covered with a layer of ice crystals.
“But,” Chu Zhao was a bit puzzled. She lay by the edge of the jade bed, looking eagerly, “This kid, though clumsy, personally fed me peanuts and was very kind to me.”
She held Yuan Ling’s cold wrist, “Is she injured? I want to repay her by transferring some of my cultivation to her.”
“You must not,” Shan Hu responded.
“Ah’Chu, have you forgotten? How those Xuanmen immortal cultivators injured Pang Xie and Hai Dai.”
Chu Zhao paused.
But she couldn’t help but recall Si Jing’s face.
The white-robed woman’s face was beautiful and elegant, but as cold and silent as ice. Not only did she always stick strange talismans on her, but she also used annoying ice threads to bind her.
Yet, after the threads were removed, her wrists were completely unharmed and didn’t hurt at all—clearly, the woman had controlled her strength.
There was also Shen Susu, who spent money lavishly yesterday, buying half the market’s food for her.
When asked why, her answer was a pained, “Well, the Immortal Cultivator sister saved us.”
And Yuan Ling, who bought her pretty shoes, was clumsy with her words, but seeing her put them on, she had blushed deeply and quietly complimented her on how good she looked.
Chu Zhao climbed onto the ice bed, shivering all over from the cold, and cautiously leaned her ear against Yuan Líng’s chest to listen.
But she could barely catch the girl’s heartbeat.
She panicked, trying hard to warm the other’s stiff body with her own warmth, and poured her demonic energy into the other’s body, “Mistress, the clumsy human is going to die.”
“I, I need to drag her into the hot spring! Mistress, quickly help me…”
Shan Ha did not respond as usual.
Her beautiful eyes lowered, she silently used a silver spoon to lightly adjust the Jiaoren oil lamp. A cold light swept across her profile.
Hundreds of souls were contained within it, and now, it only lacked one.
Just then, the originally silent, sealed jade chamber suddenly shook violently.
Azure blue spiritual energy permeated the space, and a sword light, cold as snow, slashed across.
In an instant, jade shards scattered, and a gap was forcibly torn open.
As the sword energy swept through, the originally white, steaming spring water suddenly froze solid, the ripples locked firmly in ice.
The temperature in the space dropped sharply.
The woman in the snow-white Daoist robe landed silently at the entrance of the jade chamber, put her sword back into its sheath, her expression icy, her peach blossom eyes dark as ink.
“Stop now,” her voice was faint, cold, and clear.
