- Chapter 12 - Peanuts - Come back to my cave to be my wife!
“N-No way.” Yuan Ling peeked out from behind the bed curtains, “Susu, your alcohol tolerance is very bad, I personally carried you back to the Yuelai Guest…”
Her voice came to an abrupt halt.
Si Jing took off her bamboo hat, pulled out a robe from her storage pouch, and quickly draped it over Chu Zhao.
Following Yuan Ling’s panicked gaze, she raised her fingers to the side of her neck and, sure enough, felt a tooth mark.
The little fish had bitten hard; there was a faint demonic aura around the mark, and the skin was flushed red.
Chu Zhao swayed, already unused to wearing human clothes, and with her head covered, she took a few steps forward and was about to fall over the threshold. “Mm… I can’t see the way.”
A faint, cold, snow-like aura drifted from behind, and her waist was suddenly encircled by a firm, steady grasp.
Chu Zhao was placed on a low stool. She heard the sound of the door closing and awkwardly fumbled with the fabric covering her face. Finally, she managed to peek out and look around.
She saw Yuan Ling and Shen Susu sitting woodenly on either side of the divan.
They looked at her, then awkwardly glanced at the person in front of her, and quickly lowered their heads again.
Si Jing stood in front of her, her expression obscured and silent.
“Why is no one talking?” Chu Zhao stood up, her clothes in disarray, and circled over to the two young immortal cultivators.
She widened her eyes and poked one’s cheek with her delicate, spring onion-like finger and rubbed the other’s head.
“Are all you people from Yu Lu Peak born to be ice blocks?”
She was charmingly beautiful. Although a large expanse of skin was exposed due to the messy way she wore the Daoist robe, the contrast between her fine, raven-like hair and her pale skin made her appear unexpectedly delicate and lovely.
Not to mention, when she blinked up close, her eyes were peach-colored, as if they were stealing souls.
Yuan Ling was shy and hurriedly covered her eyes, “Improper, do not look.”
Shen Susu’s face flushed, and she quickly backed away, “No, please, immortal cultivator big sister.”
When they first met Chu Zhao in the market last night, they had heard people gossiping that she was a demon cultivator of unknown origin, possibly from the notorious Hehuan Sect (Joyful Union Sect).
Although this demon cultivator was spoiled and willful, she was easy to appease: just get her a beautiful new outfit and buy her lots of food.
Besides, the demonic energy that inexplicably surged in Yingchuan City at dusk yesterday was resolved by her effortlessly.
Shen Susu secretly glanced at Chu Zhao and Si Jing, as well as the plum-blossom-like red mark blossoming on her senior sister’s neck.
She just didn’t know…
“My name is Chu Zhao! The ‘Chu’ from A-Chu, and the ‘Zhao’ from Zhaozhao (bright)!” Chu Zhao was a little dejected.
These two little immortal cultivators were avoiding her. Was she not pretty enough?
Though she thought this, as Shen Susu ran away, she was quick and nimble enough to snatch the girl’s pouch containing spirit stones from her waist.
She delightedly opened it, counted the contents, tucked it into her bosom, and intended to run off. “A-Chu is hungry and needs to go eat. Stupid immortal cultivators, goodbye forever!”
Unfortunately, before she could reach the door, she was pulled back by an irresistible force.
The mouth of the money pouch opened wide, and the spirit stones clinked and scattered across the floor.
Si Jing did not look at the spirit stones. She retracted the chilling silk threads on her fingertips, and casually cast a spell to tidy Chu Zhao’s clothes.
Just as Chu Zhao was about to open her mouth to speak, she lightly affixed a talisman to her shoulder.
It was a Silence Talisman, which she was highly skilled at using.
Chu Zhao glared at the white-robed woman across the table.
She opened her mouth, but only the silent shapes of the words “Bad person” and “Let me go” came out.
She was utterly aggrieved, her eyes turning red with either real or feigned tears. She looked pitifully at Yuan Ling and Shen Susu.
“Hungry…” she silently pleaded.
Yuan Ling’s ears were warm, and she covered her face with her hands.
“So, Yuan Ling, Susu, tell me what you saw yesterday.” Si Jing sat down.
“Yesterday?” Shen Susu smiled awkwardly, her fox-like eyes darting around, feeling a little guilty. “Yuan Ling and I bought some supplies the mountain lacked at the market, inquired about Huan Liu’s movements, and then went back to the inn to drink… to drink wine.”
Si Jing watched her calmly, “And after that?”
Although their Senior Master Sister was usually quiet, when she was expressionless and asked such curt questions…
Shen Susu and Yuan Ling exchanged a look of despair.
She must be angry.
Yuan Ling plucked up the courage, “Senior Sister! It’s… it’s my fault… I was the one who dragged Susu to drink… to drink wine!”
“It’s not about that,” Si Jing finally sighed.
“Last night, when you were attacked, did you sustain any injuries after crushing the jade slip?”
“Jade slip?” Shen Susu tilted her head, “It was crushed?”
Yuan Ling dug out a jade slip the color of bamboo from the bedding, and cautiously presented it to Si Jing, “Senior Sister, it’s… it’s right here.”
Si Jing slightly furrowed her brow.
She took it from Yuan Ling’s hand and then took out an identical jade slip from her sleeve.
Azure spiritual energy flowed from the cloud pattern, and as the matching jade slips drew near, they vibrated softly.
Somehow, it had been restored to its intact state, completely unlike what she had seen on Yu Lu Peak.
Chu Zhao, by the side of the table, also quieted down, tilting her head in confusion.
Then she stomped her feet in a mix of shame and anger. Her pink lips moved, saying who knows what.
Si Jing suddenly removed the Silence Talisman and heard a loud, delicate voice: “Someone must have glued it back! Last night, last night I clearly bit it to pieces with my own mouth!”
As she spoke, she displayed her small teeth, making what she thought was a fierce and menacing expression.
Si Jing touched the tooth mark on her neck, glanced at her, and replied, “I already know.”
Chu Zhao wanted to wag her tail proudly but realized she was in human form, so she just happily wiggled her legs.
The white-robed woman’s expression was calm, and those eyes, which were usually as cold and lonely as a winter spring, shimmered with a distinct brightness as they focused on her.
She quickly shifted her gaze away.
“Oh, right, Senior Sister…” Seeing the tension ease, Shen Susu came forward to admit her mistake, her tone remorseful. “The little fish you entrusted to Yuan Ling and me, we lost him.”
“It doesn’t matter.” Si Jing glanced at Chu Zhao.
She opened her storage pouch and returned the Peace Amulet and the Sword Sharpening Stone, which belonged to the two of them, and which she had picked up by the deep well.
The two looked at each other, confused, yet pleasantly surprised.
“Let’s go.” The tall, snow-robed woman pushed open the door of the guest room. “Stay close to me.”
It was noon in Yingchuan City. The hanging sun grazed the corner of the inn tower.
Outside the railing, the lively sounds of hawkers calling and people chatting were loud and vibrant, but the stream of people, with their diverse faces, all looked dull and listless.
Si Jing looked up at the sun through her bamboo hat.
If she remembered correctly, the sun was in the same position when she emerged from the tofu shop where the demon was dwelling.
The time spent talking seemed as though it had not flowed. It was also as if… everyone was trapped in a repeating, cycling day.
Before leaving, Yuan Ling truly couldn’t stand the sight of Chu Zhao sadly rubbing her belly from hunger, so she went and got a packet of peanuts.
Along the way, Chu Zhao took one and munched on it. Yuan Ling would then hand her another, repeating this tirelessly.
Chu Zhao ate with great delight, clinging to the arm of the pale-blue-robed girl, obediently begging, “Don’t go back to that Yu Lu Peak, come back to my cave to be my wife!”
Shen Susu slid to the side in a feigned stumble, placing herself between the two and protecting the bewildered Yuan Ling, who was clutching her skirt.
She forced a stiff smile, “Immortal cultivator older sister, look… am I suitable?”
In reality, the hands behind her back were trembling, terrified of being chosen and ending up with her heart and liver dug out, becoming a mere furnace for dual cultivation.
Chu Zhao turned her head, “No, no. I like people who are gentle and nice to me.”
Just like…
She blinked, looking ahead.
The breeze outlined the slender waist beneath the woman’s snow-white Daoist robe. Her wrists were delicate as she carried a plain sword. She suddenly paused, watching the few people who had fallen behind.
Her bamboo hat was blown up, revealing a pair of eyes with lowered lashes.
“Stay close, don’t get separated,” the clear, cold voice said.
