- Chapter 2 - The Start of School
Taking care of Wei Mu is a very simple matter.
“Hey, Wei Mu.”
“Hey.”
“No, are you really planning on not saying a word the entire way?” Kong Ning, carrying her small backpack, chased after Wei Mu, who refused to wait for her.
“I’m at least helping you carry your luggage.” Kong Ning pointed to the suitcase in her hand.
It was Wei Mu’s.
Kong Ning’s luggage was inside her backpack.
They both planned to buy everything they needed once they arrived in the capital, so Wei Mu didn’t bring much—just one small suitcase. Yet, Kong Ning still felt like she was performing a monumental task.
Because Kong Ning had lied to so many people this time, almost all of her relatives assumed she was going to Peking University.
When the truth came out, not only was Wei Mu stunned, but even her mother, Qi Zhirou, was furious.
Her daughter had grown up and learned how to lie.
Her father, Kong Hetai, was in no better mood.
The reputable School of Management had turned into the School of Liberal Arts; he originally thought his daughter had finally gained some interest in the family business, but it turned out to be all nonsense.
But what was done was done, and it couldn’t be changed. However, Kong Ning had completely lost the trust of her parents.
Qi Zhirou looked left and right, and decided that Wei Mu was the only one she could rely on.
Therefore, for the sake of Kong Ning’s healthy development, her mother, Qi Zhirou, issued an order: during their time studying in the capital, Kong Ning must listen to Wei Mu.
This included, but was not limited to, obedience in thought and compliance in action.
Failure to do so would result in punishment at home, the cessation of all living expenses, and the immediate cancellation of her secondary credit card.
Kong Ning wailed, but she eventually agreed.
Before departure, her mother specifically urged Kong Ning to look after Wei Mu, pointing out, “Mu Mu, like her mother, is a proud person. Kong Ning, even if you aren’t at the same school, you must take good care of Mu Mu, you hear me? Don’t let her be bullied. Remember, you are the older sister.”
“I know, Mom.” Kong Ning echoed, nodding.
She figured that once she was far away, her mother couldn’t monitor her. Besides, since they weren’t at the same school, how often would they even run into each other?
As for carrying the luggage, that was purely Kong Ning’s own doing.
Kong Ning felt like she just had “itchy hands.”
This was related to her experiences growing up.
Wei Mu had been fragile and delicate since she was a child, and helping her carry things was quite logical—she had always done it.
She was so used to carrying it that she felt uncomfortable if she didn’t.
Even the suitcase in her hand was one she had “snatched” away herself.
“I can talk,” Wei Mu replied, stopping to look at Kong Ning.
Wei Mu was a bit angry. The day she found out Kong Ning had lied to her, she had lost her composure, which was rare for her.
She truly felt she had been foolish for not confirming Kong Ning’s college preferences.
She knew that Kong Ning didn’t like her.
But she also thought Kong Ning was stupid.
Clearly… she could have just told her directly. She wouldn’t have pestered Kong Ning; she only wanted Kong Ning to notice her a little more.
Besides, after such a long time, most of her anger had already dissipated.
“See, I told you, it’s not a big deal.” Having received a response, Kong Ning began to float, thinking she hadn’t really done anything wrong after all.
“Right?” Kong Ning asked uncertainly, trying to get Wei Mu to agree with her.
At the same time, she secretly peeked at Wei Mu’s expression, which still held not a hint of a smile.
Damn it!
From the time they left home until arriving at the airport, Wei Mu hadn’t said a word to her.
The mechanical reply just now didn’t count! It lacked emotion.
Even though they had been in an “adversarial” relationship for the past few years, they had never been this awkward before.
She had already humbled herself to this degree, so why was Wei Mu still angry? It had been over a month since they received their admission letters.
As expected of a crybaby, a petty person—her temper was truly huge.
It was just like when they were children; if a toy block went missing, she would insist Kong Ning had given it to someone else and ignore her for days. Kong Ning would have to coax her over and over before the little pearls falling from her eyes would stop. However, when little Wei Mu would pull on her and call her “sister” to ask for reconciliation, Kong Ning always felt very satisfied—after all, she was just too cute.
Thinking of this, Kong Ning smiled.
She felt that the little Wei Mu was better, unlike the current one who was always stony-faced toward her.
She didn’t know how those other people claimed that talking to Wei Mu was like a refreshing breeze; clearly, Wei Mu was just as rigid when talking to them. As for the smiles Wei Mu gave them, in Kong Ning’s view, they were just fake smiles. There were exceptions, of course—she smiled genuinely when talking to her mother, Qi Zhirou.
“It’s just not being able to be number one anymore, don’t be so petty,” Kong Ning muttered, completely unaware of the impropriety of her remark.
After hearing this, Wei Mu cast a faint glance at Kong Ning, which made Kong Ning’s skin crawl. When Wei Mu looked away and the corners of her mouth lifted slightly, Kong Ning felt she had been looked down upon.
“Why are you looking at me like I’m an idiot? That’s too much!” Kong Ning protested.
Hearing this, Wei Mu’s smile disappeared, returning to her original “dignified and steady ice block” persona, walking ahead without giving Kong Ning any expression.
“Mm—that’s more like it,” Kong Ning nodded in satisfaction.
After passing through security, they went to the VIP lounge to wait for their flight.
Another silence.
“You…” Wei Mu started, intending to tell Kong Ning that once they landed, they should go to their respective schools separately. Later, she thought that Peking University and Tsinghua University were very close, so going together would be fine.
But Kong Ning’s train of thought was clearly different.
“I know, I know. You don’t want to talk to a loser like me.”
“You need water, right?”
“Here, take it.” After passing security, Kong Ning had long since used her own thermos to fill it with warm water, so she now handed it to Wei Mu like she was offering a treasure.
Wei Mu had never liked cold water since she was a child; Kong Ning knew this.
She couldn’t help but sigh; Wei Mu’s stomach was also very delicate.
And she couldn’t help but feel proud—Hmph, she was clever and attentive; she had guessed exactly what Wei Mu wanted.
Regarding Qi Zhirou’s request for her to take care of Wei Mu, Kong Ning wanted to laugh when she heard it.
It was truly simple. What was there about Wei Mu that she, Kong Ning, didn’t know?
“Thank you.” Wei Mu took the water and began to drink.
Wei Mu liked Kong Ning, and she also knew that Kong Ning liked others and didn’t like girls, but she still couldn’t control her feelings for Kong Ning. She could only try to keep herself restrained.
“Hmph~” Kong Ning proudly tilted her head up.
After arriving at Peking University, seeing the boys looking at her suitcase with malicious intent, Kong Ning squinted her eyes—she didn’t think any of them were “good people.”
They were all subpar; they weren’t worthy of Wei Mu.
By Kong Ning’s standards, no man worthy of Wei Mu had been born yet.
Wei Mu was the one who had bested her, Kong Ning; she felt Wei Mu was very important.
To prevent her “enemy” from having her favor stolen by some random person and then being led away, Kong Ning decided to see it through to the end. She would send Wei Mu to her dormitory before going to Tsinghua University—after all, it was right next door; it wasn’t far at all.
They arrived at Wei Mu’s dormitory and discovered that Wei Mu’s roommates hadn’t arrived yet; they were the first ones there.
“Look, I’ve already bought two sets of sheets and covers; one set will be delivered to your dorm in a while.”
“Also, I bought some small gifts that will be sent over later. Remember to give them to your roommates…” Kong Ning chattered on, informing Wei Mu of many precautions for living in a dorm, even though she had searched for them online herself, since she had no experience in dorm life. But they were worth referencing.
She was genuinely afraid—afraid that Wei Mu would be bullied.
In Kong Ning’s heart, Wei Mu was still the little bean sprout who used to hide behind her when bullied by others.
Fragile and weak—if she were bullied by some wicked roommate, Kong Ning would want to kill them.
The only person allowed to defeat Wei Mu was her, Kong Ning.
Therefore, it was better to let Wei Mu get along well with her roommates to save trouble.
“No need to thank me too much; my mom told me to buy them.” Kong Ning wasn’t lying; her mother told her to take care of Wei Mu, so of course she had to arrange everything comprehensively.
Anyway, now that the two of them were going their separate ways, Kong Ning didn’t find Wei Mu quite as unpleasant as before.
“Mm, I know.”
Wei Mu watched Kong Ning’s every move. She really wanted to explain to the other girl.
In fact, she had been taking care of herself alone for a long time; even the various accounts of the Wei family were mostly managed by Wei Mu.
But watching the way Kong Ning worried about her like a fool, Wei Mu felt a warmth in her heart.
She liked it very much.
“Oh my, I think your Peking University is just troublesome. You aren’t allowed to live off-campus in your freshman year. Otherwise, it would be much better to just rent or buy a place near the school.” Kong Ning sighed.
“I reckon I’ll go rent a place after military training.”
Kong Ning sat on the chair, her arm draped over the back, looking at Wei Mu—who was standing in front of the window—with a relaxed and triumphant expression.
“But I remember, freshmen at Tsinghua aren’t allowed to live off-campus either.” Wei Mu turned her head, the sunlight spilling right onto her face.
Wei Mu was wearing a white dress today, her hair braided into a plait resting on her right shoulder; the entire look was very gentle.
Especially with her smiling in the sunlight, she was even fresher.
She’s actually quite pretty, Kong Ning sighed.
The next second, Kong Ning came back to her senses and argued back.
It must be the lighting.
That’s right, the sun just flashed into my eyes.
In terms of looks, she, Kong Ning, wasn’t bad either. If she went back and looked in the mirror more, she wouldn’t be bewitched by Wei Mu.
“Wait, Tsinghua isn’t allowed either?” Kong Ning finally caught the main point.
“Mm.”
“Oh my god.” Kong Ning immediately slumped in defeat.
She had only focused on Peking University and forgot to check Tsinghua. A mistake!
Wei Mu looked at the deflated Kong Ning and secretly curled her lips.
“It’s just that you aren’t allowed to live off-campus officially, but renting a place is still possible. You can go out on weekends to sleep in,” Wei Mu knew that Kong Ning loved to sleep in, so she really needed a private space.
“Hehe.” Kong Ning smiled.
“I guess that works too.”
After arriving at Tsinghua, predictably, Kong Ning was the last one to arrive in her dorm.
“Dear roommates, hello! My name is Kong Ning.”
Undoubtedly, Kong Ning was an outgoing person.
“Hello, I’m Le Xiu.” The girl staying by the door immediately reached out to greet her.
“I’m Yu Lingbo.” The girl next to Le Xiu was also greeting her; she was helping Le Xiu set up a mosquito net.
“I’m Shen Nanxi.” The girl staying in the innermost bed slid her chair, stood up, and greeted Kong Ning. Once she finished, she sat back down and focused on her own tasks.
Kong Ning could feel the other girl’s goodwill, it was just that she might not be talkative and was relatively introverted.
Even though she was accustomed to Wei Mu’s beauty, Kong Ning was still stunned by Shen Nanxi.
My new roommate is actually quite pretty; quiet and graceful. This was Kong Ning’s first impression of Shen Nanxi.
“Are you setting up mosquito nets? Is there anything I can help with?” Kong Ning enthusiastically wanted to join Le Xiu and Yu Lingbo.
“Thank you, little Kong, but setting this up gets more chaotic the more people involved. It’s fine with just Lingbo. Nanxi actually wanted to help just now, but I talked her out of it.”
“It’s a pity to turn down help from two beauties, but how about I treat everyone to hot pot later? I came here several days early and traveled with my parents; I know a delicious hot pot place nearby.” Le Xiu proposed.
“Sure.” Kong Ning agreed readily. They would be spending the next four years together, so there was no need to be polite; she would treat them back in the future.
“Okay.” Shen Nanxi responded from over there as well.
“Then I won’t be polite, Le Xiu.” Yu Lingbo, who had been helping Le Xiu for half the day, naturally didn’t feel embarrassed.
“Eat whatever you want—it’s the start of the semester, and I have plenty of living expenses,” Le Xiu said boldly.
“Hahahahaha.” Laughter filled the dormitory.
“By the way, have you two known each other for a long time?”
After chatting for a while, Kong Ning asked her question; she saw how familiar Le Xiu and Yu Lingbo were and thought they must have known each other before.
“Ah?” Le Xiu, who had just finished setting up her mosquito net, was shocked by Kong Ning’s words.
“Haha, no, it’s probably just because we’re both easy-going,” Yu Lingbo replied.
“That’s quite nice.”
Kong Ning felt that her university life was going to be very exciting.
