- Chapter 92 - Ghost Queen X Ghost Bride
The paper dolls, Little One and Little Two, turned their heads in unison upon hearing the accusation. Though their faces were blank, they appeared panicked, shaking their heads frantically.
Su Mi also turned her head, watching Qiao Xinyue as she walked over and sat cross-legged on the bed.
Having just showered, Qiao Xinyue had her hair tied in a messy bun. She wore loose pajamas, her collarbones faintly visible as she leaned forward. In front of her, the small paper dolls still didn’t dare get too close.
“Little Madam, how about… I be the ‘Third Party’ instead?” Little One tried to speak up, stealing a glance toward where the Queen was.
“Me too!” Little Two echoed.
“Why are you all fighting to be the third party?” Qiao Xinyue asked, puzzled. “Do you all like being the ‘other woman’ that much?”
At those words, the two paper dolls became even more terrified, but they couldn’t explain.
Qiao Xinyue suddenly pulled up her knees, propping her chin on her hands. “Did she send you to follow me just to report my every move?”
“Of course not. The King sent us because she was worried about you,” Little One said, telling only half the truth.
“What kind of ghost is your King?” Qiao Xinyue asked, fueled by curiosity.
Su Mi hadn’t expected her to be curious at this moment, especially since Qiao Xinyue usually acted as if she couldn’t get away fast enough. She signaled the paper dolls to answer without interfering.
“The King is very powerful, everyone in the Ghost Realm fears and respects her. As for the rest… Little Madam can ask the King yourself,” Little One finally managed to say something positive.
Qiao Xinyue didn’t have much of a concept of what the paper doll meant, but she snorted at the last part. “If she’s so powerful, why does she need to… enter a ghost marriage with me?”
Little One looked at Su Mi and only continued after receiving her silent permission.
“The King has urgent matters to attend to in the human world. Normally, ghosts from the Ghost Realm cannot possess a physical form in the living world, so she needs to use the ghost marriage contract with Little Madam.”
“So, I’m just a tool for her to have a physical body?” Qiao Xinyue asked unhappily.
Su Mi gave the paper doll a cold glare. The latter quickly denied it. “No, Little Madam! The King has always kept you in her heart. She even goes to see you often.”
Little One’s voice was suddenly cut off, unable to say another word.
Qiao Xinyue, left hanging mid-sentence, reached out and poked Little One. “Why did you stop talking?”
Little One waved its arms and shook its head. Little Two didn’t dare speak either.
“Forget it then.” Qiao Xinyue wasn’t the type to dig for answers, she was just asking out of boredom and didn’t take the talk about “keeping her in her heart” seriously.
Su Mi watched as she suddenly yawned, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. Qiao Xinyue had spent most of the day traveling, and thanks to a certain ghost in her dreams last night, she hadn’t slept well. She was feeling exhausted.
Seeing this, Su Mi walked over and tugged at Qiao Xinyue’s pajama pants.
Qiao Xinyue picked “it” up. “What is it, Little Third?”
Su Mi was still not used to that nickname.
She wrote two words in Qiao Xinyue’s palm, the red ink manifesting on the skin.
Go to sleep.
Qiao Xinyue found this novel and tried to rub the words, finding they wouldn’t smudge. After a moment, the writing faded away.
“You want me to sleep?” Qiao Xinyue asked.
Su Mi nodded.
“Little Third, you’re so well-behaved.” Qiao Xinyue’s beautiful eyes curved into a shallow smile, her gaze bright and soft.
Truly tired and with plans for tomorrow, Qiao Xinyue decided to listen to “Little Third” and go to bed early. Before sleeping, she placed the three paper dolls on the nightstand and left a small lamp on for them.
“Don’t exclude Little Third, okay?” Qiao Xinyue whispered before closing her eyes.
Once Qiao Xinyue fell asleep, Su Mi extracted herself from the paper doll and sat by the bed watching her. The other two sensible paper dolls had long since scurried into a corner.
Su Mi reached out to touch the back of her hand, a soft smile playing on her lips. Now, in the physical world, she could actually touch her. The air conditioning wasn’t set very low, so Su Mi’s natural chill felt comfortable to Qiao Xinyue, who even rolled over to lean closer to her.
Only when she was asleep would she proactively approach her like this or perhaps in that half-awake, dazed state like last night.
Memories of last night’s vivid moments flooded Su Mi’s mind. If she hadn’t seen them, she might have been able to restrain herself. But it is hard for anyone to forget what they know, let alone Su Mi, who was no longer human.
Her lowered eyes slowly lifted, her gaze like spring water flowing at the foot of a snowy mountain. Su Mi’s hands were long and clean, every bone as exquisite as jade. Though her pale skin lacked blood, it remained beautiful, looking like a finely carved piece of art under the lamp.
Her thumb brushed against Qiao Xinyue’s full, soft lips, lightly touching the philtrum, sensing a hint of warmth and softness. However, the sleeping Qiao Xinyue pursed her lips as if annoyed by the teasing.
Su Mi raised her hand and tapped Qiao Xinyue’s forehead, suppressing her Shi Gou (Corpse Dog) soul po, temporarily sealing her warning instincts. She then leaned down slowly. Just as her lips were about to touch the corner of the other’s mouth, she stopped herself.
Settling for second best, she held Qiao Xinyue’s hand. It was different from hers, the fingers were like tender bamboo shoots, the skin as smooth as suet jade, clearly pampered since childhood. If she had her full sense of touch, she would feel the softness and warmth.
Su Mi pressed the back of the girl’s hand to her lips for a light kiss, then moved to nuzzle against her knuckles affectionately.
In the corner of the bed, the previously hidden paper dolls slowly peeked their heads out. They were curious, but Su Mi looked over instantly, startling them. As they prepared to bolt, she called them back.
Su Mi turned her head slightly. “Come here.”
The two paper dolls had no choice but to climb onto the bed, walking over on their short legs.
“King, we didn’t see anything,” Little One said, hanging its head.
“Yes, yes!” Little Two nodded, covering its face.
Su Mi didn’t care about that. She commanded, “I have to go out for a while. Until I return, you must follow her every step. I will leave a wisp of my consciousness on that paper doll, treat it as if I am still here.”
The two paper dolls nodded like pecking chickens.
Su Mi let go of Qiao Xinyue’s hand and withdrew the suppression. As she stood up, her figure became transparent, her gaze fixed on Qiao Xinyue’s sleeping face until she vanished from the room.
Su Mi returned to the place where Qiao Xinyue had been taken to change clothes. The woman was no longer there.
She wasn’t surprised. She hadn’t struck to kill earlier, the woman had only been knocked out briefly. The reason she hadn’t come back immediately was likely to find out where Su Mi came from.
That person was human and hadn’t been possessed, yet she carried a ghostly aura. Clearly, her attack on Qiao Xinyue wasn’t accidental. Evil ghosts who escaped the Ghost Realm were initially restricted by ghost laws, but they would eventually find ways to bypass them, becoming powerful and controlling un-reincarnated souls or living humans. This woman was likely under such control.
Su Mi had left a mark on her before leaving. Now, she followed the trail to find the woman and perhaps discover what was behind her.
Su Mi followed the tracks until she arrived outside a village surrounded by dense forest. It wasn’t late yet, the stilt houses in the village were mostly lit. Lanterns hung at every door, looking like a sea of fireflies from afar.
Su Mi didn’t enter the village. Instead, she turned and headed into the pitch-black forest. After walking several hundred meters, she saw the woman she had met earlier kneeling in the woods, muttering something.
Suddenly, the woman stopped, looking back with a hint of suspicion. In the next instant, she stood up and bolted forward.
Su Mi released several paper dolls, which intercepted and pinned her to the ground. Though they were just thin paper, they now felt like they weighed a thousand pounds, crushing the woman’s limbs.
“Where is your master?”
The woman turned her head with difficulty, a distorted smile appearing on her face. “Entered… she entered. I did it.”
Su Mi felt a bad premonition. Just as she was about to retreat, a wind rose out of nowhere, swirling dust and fallen leaves. Piercing screams and wails echoed in her ears.
“You dare chase me without a physical body? King, should I call you overconfident or just arrogant?” The woman emitted a sharp, high-pitched laughter that didn’t belong to her. “Or perhaps, you care too much about that little wife of yours.”
“You think this array can hurt me?” Su Mi’s gaze scanned the surroundings.
“I don’t think it can hurt you. I only need it to delay you.”
Deep in the forest, footprints pressed unevenly into the soil.
Qiao Xinyue’s face was as pale as paper. She panted heavily, having lost her backpack somewhere during her flight. She was exhausted, her vision starting to blur. She leaned against a rough tree trunk for support, unable to understand how things had come to this.
She had woken up early today to meet her club members. They had agreed to go into the mountains for a photoshoot and had hired a guide. After setting out, she realized the two paper dolls had snuck into her bag. She couldn’t throw them out, so she brought them along.
The local guide seemed responsible, driving them to their destination and sharing local history. He offered to take them to the best scenery for photos. At first, they stayed together, but then a few members wanted to photograph a different view and wandered off, the guide followed them to ensure their safety.
Qiao Xinyue had a high sense of safety and stayed nearby. But suddenly, someone ran over saying an accident had happened near the guide. Panicked, she instinctively followed the person.
However, after a while, something felt wrong. They weren’t heading toward the guide’s location. When she questioned it, things changed.
The person suddenly became like the woman from last night, their face turned black, with only the whites of their eyes showing. Terrified, she turned and ran.
But even though she ran back the way she came, she couldn’t find the exit. Horrifying things, neither human nor ghost, kept popping up, scaring her so much she didn’t even dare to cry.
“Little Third,” attached to her wrist, was emitting a faint chill and a slight pulling sensation, as if urging her to keep moving.
“Little Madam, someone has set an array here. Our spiritual power is too low to break it, and we can’t contact the King.”
Suddenly, a man with wide, bloodshot eyes appeared before her. Half of his face was stripped to the bone, his every breath sounding like a roar as he lunged.
Qiao Xinyue was frozen with fear, but “Little Third” on her wrist pulled her back several steps, dodging the attack. Little One and Little Two suddenly grew to the size of adults, blocking her path.
Qiao Xinyue turned and continued to run, cursing as she went. “Where is Su Mi? Where is your King? Why isn’t she here when she’s actually needed! This ghost is so ‘obedient’! Why couldn’t she be this obedient last night!”
As she was mid-rant, more of those monstrous things appeared. Qiao Xinyue stopped, throwing whatever she had left at them. “Get away!”
It was useless. Qiao Xinyue closed her eyes in despair. But just as they were about to touch her, a red light erupted from her body, burning the creatures until they shrieked.
When she opened her eyes again, she saw a shimmering silhouette before her.
Faint light clung to the stranger’s fingertips and hair. Behind her stood a massive Ghost Gate, with countless chains coiled upon it, currently grinding into motion. As the Ghost Gate swung open, countless dark red chains surged out, binding the terrifying man and dragging him behind the gate.
Su Mi turned around, her eyes indifferent like moonlight, yet tinged with a streak of dark red that added a bloodthirsty, murderous edge.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
