- Chapter 83 - Rivals X Fake Heiress
Because Su Mi had abruptly hung up the phone earlier, Su Mother called back once more.
This time, after Su Mi picked up, she flatly rejected her and ended the call within a few sentences.
“Why aren’t you going? Someone like me who wants to go can’t even get an invite,” Guan Yue said as she snapped her suitcase shut with a sharp clack. She straightened the luggage and stood up. “By the way, you’ve probably met her, right?”
The “her” she referred to was, naturally, the biological daughter of the Guan family.
Su Mi tried to take the suitcase from her, but Guan Yue dodged. “No, I haven’t seen her.”
Before the Guan family found their biological daughter, Guan Yue had already fallen out with Su Mi. Later, Su Mi spent her time at university in another city and rarely returned to Yun City.
She had returned once after hearing about the news, but by then, Guan Yue had already left home for parts unknown, and Su Mi never bothered to meet the biological daughter the Guans had brought back.
“Well, this is a good chance to see her. She’s the obedient, beautiful type they like, unlike me, who’s been a rebel since childhood and loves going against the grain,” Guan Yue said nonchalantly as she turned away.
“I don’t know her, so why should I go?” Su Mi replied.
“Ask yourself.” Guan Yue was currently speaking whatever nonsense suited her mood.
Su Mi stepped in front of her, cupped her face, and leaned down close. “But the one I like is exactly this rebellious, disobedient version of you.”
With their breaths mingling, Guan Yue suddenly narrowed her eyes. “Su Mi, so you do think I’m not as obedient as others, don’t you?”
Teacher Su, who had failed her “survival guide” despite hard study, was at a loss: “…That’s not what I meant.”
“Heh!” Guan Yue leaned back to break free from her hands and walked out.
Realizing she hadn’t finished asking what she needed to, Su Mi followed her again. “Have you bought your plane ticket back to Yun City?”
“Not yet,” Guan Yue blurted out, only to realize she’d been baited.
“Then I’ll help you buy it along with mine.”
“Who said I wanted to go with you?”
The next day, after packing, the two of them headed to the airport together anyway. On the way, Guan Yue kept her eye mask on and slept, looking like she had zero interest in communication.
The assistant mentioned that this was Guan Yue’s standard state once she stepped out of “work mode.”
Even after landing, Guan Yue’s drowsy state didn’t improve much.
Guan Yue’s company hadn’t arranged a pickup, so Su Mi brought her along in the car sent for her.
While Su Mi was helping her into the car, the assistant received a phone call. After hanging up, she looked quite worried, prompting Su Mi to ask what was wrong.
“Guan-jie’s manager just called. It seems there are paparazzi or someone similar camping out in front of her apartment. She wants Guan-jie to find somewhere else to stay for now and not go home.”
Guan Yue didn’t have much fame before, so she lived in a complex without high-end security; it wouldn’t stop those people.
Hearing this, Su Mi raised her eyes slightly. “Then come to my place for now.”
The assistant was about to say that might not be appropriate, but then she remembered the two had already lived together during filming. She nodded decisively. “Then I’ll have to trouble you, Teacher Su.”
Su Mi withdrew her hand from the car door and curled her lips slightly. “It’s no trouble.”
An hour later, the car reached the destination.
Su Mi woke her up.
Guan Yue lifted a corner of her eye mask and gave a groggy “Are we there?”
Only after receiving a positive response did she sit up. But once she got out of the car and looked at the unfamiliar, high-end residential area, she frowned. “Where is this? Xiao Yang, did you give the wrong address?”
The assistant got out and explained the situation.
Guan Yue rubbed her face. “I say, next time you sell me out, could you at least consult with the person who is still your boss?”
Assistant: “Huh?”
Guan Yue glanced back at Su Mi, who was retrieving the luggage, and waved her hand. “Forget it, forget it.”
The two assistants helped bring the luggage to the elevator but didn’t go up.
Su Mi instructed the driver to take the assistants home and then led Guan Yue inside.
Although it was Guan Yue’s first time at Su Mi’s place, she felt no restraint at all. She swapped her shoes and went straight to the sofa to lie down.
“Are you that sleepy?”
Guan Yue rolled over on the sofa clutching a pillow and gave a hum of affirmation.
Su Mi walked over in her slippers. “Change your clothes and go sleep in the bedroom.”
But having just endured a long flight, Guan Yue didn’t want to move. She kept her eyes closed and ignored her.
Su Mi watched her for a moment, then reached out and picked her up.
Startled by the loss of gravity, Guan Yue snapped her eyes open and clung to her. “What are you doing? My clothes are in the suitcase. I don’t want to go get them now.”
“I have some in my closet.”
Ultimately, Su Mi took out a set of her own pajamas for her to change into. Guan Yue wasn’t picky; she changed and went straight to sleep in the bed.
Su Mi adjusted the room temperature before leaving to organize the two suitcases in the living room.
By the time she finished tidying up, night had fallen.
Su Mi rubbed the back of her aching neck, took the suitcases to the storage room, and set the robot vacuum to clean the floor.
She washed her hands and entered the bedroom.
The person sleeping on the bed looked very peaceful, the only movement being the slight rise and fall of her chest as she breathed.
Su Mi walked over, lay down beside her, and pulled her into an embrace.
Guan Yue, sensing her presence in her daze, wriggled a bit and muttered, “Is your bed this crowded? I might as well have found a hotel.”
Su Mi pressed against the back of her neck and smiled silently. “No returns or refunds accepted.”
She heard Guan Yue whisper a soft “huff.” “Shrewd merchant… why don’t you just make it a forced sale then?”
After filming ended, Guan Yue spent most of her days at home sleeping, as if trying to make up for all the missed rest during the two months of production.
When she wasn’t sleeping, she would curl up on the sofa and watch dramas.
In comparison, Su Mi was much busier and even went out for a media appearance during that time.
Before Tuesday arrived, Su Mi’s parents called her again to ask if she really wasn’t attending the engagement ceremony.
She refused once more.
Close to Tuesday, Guan Yue finally received a message from her parents asking if she had time to attend her “sister’s” engagement ceremony at 6:00 PM that evening.
Guan Yue chose to “Read” and not reply.
On Tuesday, Su Mi wanted to take her out to keep her from overthinking.
But Guan Yue refused. She felt going out with Su Mi lacked any fun. Su Mi had to be fully disguised, otherwise, it would cause public chaos.
Instead, Su Mi stayed home to play some “brain-teasing” co-op games with her.
“Where’s my fish? Quick, quick, cook the rice!”
“The seaweed! Where did my seaweed go?!”
“Ahhh! Fire! It’s on fire!”
“Don’t block my way!”
“I’m not playing with you anymore!!!”
Finally, Guan Yue threw down the controller and buried her head in a pillow, sulking.
Su Mi put down her controller and leaned in. “Sorry, I’m not very practiced yet.”
Guan Yue lifted her head, gritted her teeth, and suddenly lunged to sit on her, pinching Su Mi’s face. “I told you not to come over and mess with me! Just stay on your side!”
“I’ll remember next time.”
“Bullshit, you said that last time too!”
Seeing that her pinching had left red marks on Su Mi’s fair skin, Guan Yue felt a pang of guilt and let go, rubbing the spots for her.
“Still want to play?” Su Mi asked.
Looking at Su Mi’s sincere eyes, Guan Yue nodded through the pain.
An hour later, Guan Yue put down her “weapon of choice,” her heart cold as ash.
“Heh, let’s just never play this game again.”
Su Mi replied silently, “Okay.”
They had played all afternoon, it was now 5:40 PM.
Guan Yue picked up her phone, which had been tossed aside during the game, saw some new messages, and replied to them one by one. Then she saw the message she hadn’t replied to.
Her finger hesitated before clicking on her mother’s chat box and typing a brief message of congratulations.
She intended to put the phone away after replying, but surprisingly, she received an immediate response.
It was a string of voice messages.
Guan Yue glanced at Su Mi beside her and clicked them directly. Although they came from Su Mother’s WeChat, Su Father’s voice erupted like a barrage of cannonballs.
“Guan Yue! What do you mean by sending this message now? Are you here to mock us?”
“Was it you? Did you instigate your sister to do this?!”
“We spent so many years painstakingly raising you. Where did we fail you? What exactly are you dissatisfied with?”
“Why did you choose to ruin Guan Xin’s life like this! You already stole twenty years of her life, are you still not satisfied?!”
The bizarre accusations came one after another due to the autoplay setting.
Guan Yue seemed overloaded by the information, she held the phone and didn’t move an inch.
Su Mi reached over, took the phone, and stopped the remaining voice messages.
Guan Yue finally seemed to react. She turned her head to look at Su Mi, her raised hand trembling slightly. “Give me the phone.”
Su Mi held her hand. “Let’s calm down first, then solve the problem.”
“I am calm. If I’m getting scolded for no reason, I at least need to find out what the reason is,” Guan Yue said, her breathing becoming rapid.
Seeing her persistence, Su Mi eventually handed the phone back.
Guan Yue took a deep breath and dialed Su Mother’s number. This time, it wasn’t Su Father’s voice, but Su Mother’s, though her tone wasn’t much better.
Over the phone, Su Mother said that Guan Xin had run away from the wedding, leaving behind the fiancé and a room full of guests without a single word.
They were likely still at the venue, as the background noise was chaotic. Su Mother had moved somewhere quieter to talk.
“So you suspect I instigated her?” Guan Yue found it laughable. “Why would Guan Xin listen to me? Am I her dear sister?”
“Yueyue, how can you talk to Mom like that? Dad was just in a panic, and then seeing your message made him speak without thinking.”
“Was it speaking without thinking, or was it what he truly feels?” Guan Yue asked with a smile, though her eyes were turning red.
Hearing this, Su Mother’s tone grew cold. “Yueyue, these years away from us have truly made you lose your upbringing and manners.”
“So, to avoid embarrassing you, haven’t I rolled far away? Don’t worry, no one outside knows I have even the slightest connection to you.” Guan Yue hung up immediately after saying that.
Guan Yue sat there holding her phone. After a moment, she tried to get up to leave, but Su Mi caught her hand.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t by your side back then.”
Guan Yue curled her lips. “I hated you more than anyone back then. If you had approached me, I would have been like my dad, treating you like you were there to gloat.”
Hearing her indifferent tone, Su Mi felt a sharp, subtle pain in her chest.
She leaned forward and pulled Guan Yue into her arms, the friction of their clothes bringing a sense of warmth.
Guan Yue, who was used to building iron walls around herself, felt sheltered in that moment. This softness made her eyes flush instantly, her vision turning blurry and hot.
“Actually, I tried to coexist peacefully with her, but I really couldn’t do it,” she said, her voice suppressed with a sob.
“Guan Xin fits every expectation they ever had for a daughter, gentle, beautiful, high-achieving, and obedient. But… does only the ‘perfect’ child deserve a parent’s complete love?”
Guan Yue’s question seemed directed at Su Mi, yet also at herself.
Once, she had the sole love of her parents. Even if that love wasn’t pure, it belonged only to her.
But after Guan Xin appeared, everything changed.
Countless people emerged to tell her she was a lucky thief who had briefly possessed things that didn’t belong to her. She felt angry and wronged, and when she sought support from her parents, she found them smiling tenderly at someone else, too busy to comfort her.
Since then, her parents’ gaze no longer lingered on her, in fact, it rarely stopped on her at all.
This massive drop was more than she could accept.
“But Guan Xin was their child all along. Am I just being selfish?”
Su Mi heard Guan Yue ask her this.
She closed her eyes slightly. “Guan Yue, love is inherently selfish.”
Guan Yue suddenly laughed. “Right. Maybe I’m just an extremely greedy and selfish person. I want a complete love. I don’t want to share even a bit of it with anyone else.”
She raised her hand to trace Su Mi’s cold, elegant features. “Will you belong only to me?”
Su Mi answered without a second thought, “Yes.”
The bright smile in her eyes was like a mountain of flowers in bloom, radiant and beautiful.
“Then… do you want me?”
