- Chapter 59 - Cold Professor X Obedient Beauty
Lin Nanyue looked at the photo on Yan Han’s phone. In the picture, she was walking on the right side of the street, although it was a profile shot, her face was turned slightly to the left.
“How about it? Doesn’t it really look a bit like her?”
Lin Nanyue nodded. At first glance, there was indeed a resemblance.
She asked, “Where was this posted?”
Yan Han replied, “In the big group chat. It was originally a promotional post forwarded by the school’s official account, and someone noticed it after clicking in.”
The “big group” she referred to was a campus wide chat involving students from different departments and grades, and even some alumni. Usually, people shared fresh or interesting news there or gossiped. There were several such groups, and they remained at maximum capacity for long periods.
Lin Nanyue didn’t have much interest in these groups. She had joined them before but never participated. Even with notifications muted, she found the constant stream of messages annoying, so she eventually left and never rejoined. She treated this photo as just a small interlude in her life and didn’t give it much thought.
As the two finished their discussion, Lin Nanyue turned back to her computer screen. She minimized her resume window and opened another document, her resignation letter.
Ever since Professor Su helped her answer that phone call, her holidays had been very quiet, with no work related interruptions. She had originally planned to resign over the phone, but considering the salary the boss had given her, she felt a formal approach was better, a sign of respect for the pay.
The resignation letter should have been finished long ago, but these past few days she had truly learned the meaning of “neglecting duties for love.” Her efficiency dropped significantly whenever Professor Su was around, though her resume had been much improved under Su’s “supervision.”
Lin Nanyue polished the content of the resignation letter one last time and hit send. She planned to go to the studio tomorrow to speak with the boss in person.
With that finished, she closed her laptop, grabbed her phone, and climbed into bed to report her progress to Professor Su. Su Mi replied after a while, but it was a very brief message. When Lin Nanyue asked what she was doing, there was no further response.
Getting no reply, Lin Nanyue tossed and turned in bed, eventually sighing. Having been inseparable for days, she really wasn’t used to being apart. This made her think of Su’s previous invitation to move in together, she regretted her hesitation.
On the other side, Su Mi hadn’t replied because she was chatting with her mother. It was disrespectful to check her phone constantly during a conversation. Her mother had drunk a bit too much wine and kept her talking, and Su Mi had joined her for a few drinks as well.
Once the conversation ended and she left, Su Mi checked her phone. Seeing Lin Nanyue’s message from thirty minutes ago, she called her directly.
The call was answered almost instantly.
Su Mi spoke first: “Hello?”
“You’re finished?” Lin Nanyue’s voice sounded both surprised and delighted.
Su Mi heard a female voice in the background asking Lin Nanyue who she was talking to. Lin Nanyue mumbled that it was her “sister.”
Lin Nanyue put the phone back to her ear. “Si… Sister, wait a moment, I’m going downstairs to get my headphones.”
“Alright.” While waiting, Su Mi walked to the door. The alcohol had made her face flush and feel a bit warm. Standing in the courtyard, she saw her father’s car returning. She did the math and walked toward it.
About two minutes later, Lin Nanyue’s voice reappeared. Su Mi heard the sound of a sliding glass door closing. “Are you out?”
“On the balcony,” Lin Nanyue said. “Are you at home with your elders?”
“Mm, I was chatting with my mother, so I didn’t reply. It’s over now. What about you?” Su Mi’s tone was different from its usual crispness, it was slightly drawn out and melodic.
Lin Nanyue lied, “I happened to be busy too.”
Su Mi didn’t expose her. She opened the car door and sat inside.
Lin Nanyue heard the door close. “Are you going to drive? You should focus on the road then. I won’t disturb you.”
“I’m not driving, there’s a chauffeur.” It was hard to call a taxi from her family’s location, so she hitched a ride with the family driver. Before getting in, she showed him an address. Once she was settled, the driver started the car and drove off slowly.
Lin Nanyue relaxed. “Professor Su, I feel like your voice today… is very different?”
It was much gentler than usual, with a hint of laziness.
Su Mi paused. “Is it? Maybe because I had some wine with my mother.”
Hearing this, Lin Nanyue felt a surge of curiosity. She had never seen Professor Su after she’d been drinking. She used to wonder why her roommates could talk to their partners on the phone for so long, but now she understood. Just hearing Professor Su’s voice made her happy.
During their hour long call, Lin Nanyue went from standing to squatting and back to standing on the balcony several times.
“Professor Su, I think I miss you a little,” Lin Nanyue said, holding her breath for a response.
Su Mi chuckled softly. “How much is ‘a little’?”
Lin Nanyue walked to the balcony railing, looking at the distant lights. “Maybe a little more than the stars in the sky.”
“Then why don’t you look down?”
Lin Nanyue instinctively looked down. Her dormitory was on the fifth floor, giving her a clear view of the people below. She immediately spotted a figure standing in the shadows, looking up.
She was speechless for a moment. When she finally found her voice, the first thing she said was: “Quick, stand somewhere where people can’t see you!”
Though confused, Su Mi did as she was told. She listened to the sound of Lin Nanyue’s slight panting through the earbuds, proof that she was running toward her.
Soon, a familiar figure appeared in the bright dormitory lobby, clutching something in her hand. Su Mi walked forward to meet her, but before she could even step out of the shadows, Lin Nanyue lunged into her arms.
Su Mi barely steadied herself as she held her. Then, Lin Nanyue unfolded the item in her hand. It was an unopened face mask.
Seeing her standing on tiptoe to wrap it around her, Su Mi asked, “Am I a terrorist? So shameful to be seen?”
Lin Nanyue replied seriously, “In a way, yes. Professor Su, don’t you know how famous your face is across both campuses?”
She carefully put the mask on her. Seeing that stunning face half-hidden, Lin Nanyue, who should have felt relieved, frowned instead. Why did she look… even better? It added a mysterious, “desire yet restraint” coldness to her look.
The commotion in the shadows drew some attention, so Lin Nanyue immediately led her away. However, walking on the main path still attracted too much notice, so she guided Su Mi to a secluded, quiet path on campus.
Away from the crowds, they could shamelessly hold hands.
“Professor Su, weren’t you going home? Why did you come to find me?”
Su Mi squeezed her hand and spoke through the mask: “Didn’t you say you missed me?”
“But I said that after you arrived,” Lin Nanyue countered. “I didn’t say it before.”
The streetlights here were sparse, and the light was dim.
Instead of answering, Su Mi said, “In ancient India, there was an old method to tell if a suspect was lying. They would make the suspect chew fried raw rice and then spit it out. If it was dry, it meant they were guilty, if wet, they were innocent. Do you know why?”
“Why?” Lin Nanyue was curious.
Su Mi stopped walking and explained, “Because of nervousness. Nervousness is an emotion, and emotions affect saliva secretion. Literature often describes a nervous person as having a ‘dry mouth.’ It’s a psychological phenomenon. So…”
“Before that, did you really not miss me?”
Lin Nanyue thought to herself that there was no fried rice here, so Professor Su couldn’t tell if she was lying. She confidently said, “No.”
Su Mi pondered for a moment. “It seems you’re not nervous enough. The emotion hasn’t reached the right level.”
Coincidentally, there was a tree nearby. Su Mi forced Lin Nanyue back until her back hit the trunk.
Lin Nanyue looked at her blankly. “What are you doing?”
Su Mi’s gaze dropped. She reached out with one hand to pull down the mask, leaning in until her lips almost touched Lin Nanyue’s cherry-pink ones. Her voice carried a lingering hook: “Interrogation under duress.”
Her tone was formal, but her actions were anything but public.
The distance between them was negligible, their heartbeats pressed against each other’s chests. Su Mi left her no room to retreat. Lin Nanyue was now certain she had been drinking, a faint, pleasant aroma of red wine lingered at the tip of her nose.
After a moment, Su Mi looked her in the eyes. “Will the prisoner revise her statement?”
Lin Nanyue subconsciously swallowed and whispered, “No.”
Before the word could even land, she felt a burst of warmth on her lips. Su Mi lingered for a second before pulling back slightly, her lips grazing Lin Nanyue’s.
Perhaps because of Su Mi’s psychological suggestion, Lin Nanyue actually felt her mouth go dry.
Su Mi asked again, her eyes fixed on her: “And now?”
“…No.” Lin Nanyue’s voice grew much softer.
