- Chapter 58 - Cold Professor X Sweet Beauty
“Huh?” Lin Nanyue thought she had misheard, but at such a close distance, she had heard every word clearly.
Su Mi, who had followed her in and casually closed the door, continued: “This place isn’t particularly far from your school. If you’re going to work, it’s more convenient from my side.”
Lin Nanyue knew she had a point, “But…”
Wouldn’t this pace be a bit too fast? After all, they had only been together for two full days.
Su Mi’s expression shifted slightly. “You’ve stayed here before. Is there something you’re worried about?”
“It’s different now.” Lin Nanyue’s fingers brushed against the surface of the entryway console. “Wouldn’t it be… not quite right for us to do this?”
Moving in together right after starting a relationship felt like the “fast forward” button had been pressed.
Su Mi lowered her eyes slightly. “Perhaps I was too impatient. We can take things slow.”
Although this was a different world, the reaction she received when inviting her partner to live together was largely the same. Thus, the matter of moving in was temporarily set aside for further discussion.
Having been out for two days, Su Mi had a backlog of work to finish. After changing her clothes in her room, she took her laptop to the living room to work.
With nothing much to do, Lin Nanyue took a psychology book from Su Mi’s shelf. However, the professional terminology was dense, and she soon felt tired. Initially sitting on the sofa, she eventually shifted to a semi-reclined position, her gaze naturally drifting from the book to the person working in front of her.
Professor Su, sitting cross-legged on the rug while working, was different from her usual self. A pair of glasses rested on the bridge of her nose, her gaze was focused and serious, her expression neutral. Whenever she looked down, her long, unbundled hair would slide down her shoulders.
Su Mi felt it was somewhat inconvenient, so she stopped typing to tie her hair back.
Lin Nanyue suddenly sat up on the sofa. “Professor Su, let me help you tie your hair.”
Su Mi paused her movements, turned her head slightly to look at her, and smiled as she let go. “Alright.”
Having gained permission, Lin Nanyue immediately put down her book and moved behind Su Mi. Her fingers spread and slid through the strands, feeling the smooth, thick black hair flow through her palms with a cool, slight itch.
With help secured, Su Mi returned her hands to the keyboard to continue reviewing and marking materials.
“Can I braid it?” Lin Nanyue asked, eager to try.
“Mhm.” Su Mi didn’t mind how she played with her hair.
Thus, Lin Nanyue began her braiding journey, though her fingers accidentally bumped into the temples of Su Mi’s glasses several times. Su Mi eventually took the glasses off, as it didn’t affect her work much.
“Professor Su, is your prescription not that strong?” Lin Nanyue asked curiously.
Su Mi clicked her mouse. “Mhm, the degree isn’t deep. I just have a slight astigmatism; it doesn’t affect much in daily life.”
That was why she sometimes went out without them.
Lin Nanyue nodded behind Professor Su’s back. “No wonder it feels different.”
“What feels different?”
Lin Nanyue replied, “Your eyes. They are very beautiful.”
They lacked the dullness often seen in people with heavy nearsightedness. Perhaps due to the slight blur, Professor Su would unconsciously squint a little when looking at her, which made her look especially affectionate.
In internet terms, she looked like she could stare “lovingly at a dog.”
Thinking of this, Lin Nanyue suddenly tilted her head and said, “Why don’t you wear your glasses whenever you go out to see people in the future?”
She wanted to keep that special gaze all to herself.
Su Mi didn’t ask why, she simply gave a light chuckle and agreed.
Afterward, Lin Nanyue stopped talking so as not to disturb the other woman, quietly braiding her hair.
Suddenly, a phone on the coffee table beside Su Mi began to vibrate. She reached for it, only to realize it wasn’t her own.
Lin Nanyue’s hands were busy with the hair and she didn’t want to let go. “Who is it? Can you put it on speaker for me?”
Su Mi glanced at the WeChat caller ID. “It’s likely from your internship. Want me to answer it for you?”
“Okay.” Lin Nanyue thought Professor Su would just use the speakerphone, but Su Mi answered it and held it directly to Lin Nanyue’s ear.
As soon as it connected, before Su Mi could even speak, a rapid barrage of words came from the other side.
“Xiao Lin, I told you to go to the company and send that Nan Yuan Villa file. Why hasn’t there been a response after ten minutes? I’m out on vacation without a laptop and the client is in a hurry. Do I really have to call and beg for your help, or do I need President Fang to come personally?”
Lin Nanyue heard everything. Her heart tightened, but just as she was about to speak, Professor Su beat her to it.
Handling someone else’s call was becoming a familiar task for Su Mi. She continued browsing literature while listening. “Is this how you ask for a favor?”
The person on the other end was clearly caught off guard by the strange voice and was stunned into silence for a moment.
Su Mi continued on her own: “Furthermore, it’s currently a holiday. Solve your own work problems yourself, understood?”
The other person didn’t even think to ask who she was, merely following Su Mi’s lead: “But this is a studio project.”
“But what?” Su Mi interrupted. “Can’t you solve your own work issues? Is your studio going to go bankrupt if it loses one intern? If so, tell your boss that it’s better for such a studio to close down sooner rather than later.”
“Is there anything else? If not, I’m hanging up.”
When the person on the other end failed to respond, Su Mi ended the call.
Only then did Su Mi seem to consider Lin Nanyue’s feelings. She turned her head slightly. “Was there a problem with what I said?”
Lin Nanyue had stopped her movements the moment Su Mi answered the phone. She was still a bit dazed; after all, that call sounded more like a resignation notice.
However, she didn’t have time to worry about Su Mi’s attitude or what the other person thought, because she had realized something else.
“The last time I had a call… was that also answered by you?”
She remembered that after she had too much to drink, Senior Fang’s face hadn’t looked great when he asked where she had been that night. He had mentioned a “sister.” At the time, she was confused about where this sister came from, but the heavy workload that followed prevented her from looking into it.
Thinking back now, it was probably Professor Su who had answered the phone.
Su Mi looked at her with slightly raised eyelids. “Oh, that person you have labeled as ‘Senior’?”
Lin Nanyue said, “Yes. He’s in the same department as me, one year ahead. He’s also the boss of the place where I intern.”
“Is this why you rejected me and didn’t want to change internships?” Su Mi stared at her, as if trying to find a clue in her next answer.
“No.” Lin Nanyue felt a bit embarrassed. Her refusal back then was because of… a small misunderstanding.
“Then why? Because of that senior?”
When Su Mi looked at someone with her eyelids half-raised, there was a sense of pressure in her nonchalance. Combined with her cool voice, it naturally induced a sense of nervousness.
Lin Nanyue rarely saw her with this expression and forgot to reply for a moment.
Su Mi’s finger tapped rhythmically on the coffee table. “What kind of ‘good senior’ brings a girl to a drinking table with clients and leaves her behind without any regard for her safety?”
“Actually, there was another colleague there, so Senior he…” Lin Nanyue’s voice grew smaller under Su Mi’s gaze, sensing that if she continued, something bad might happen.
Su Mi had turned most of her body around by now, leaning against the coffee table and watching her with a slight hook of her lips. “Why did you stop?”
Lin Nanyue didn’t care about the hair anymore. She quickly let go, placed her hands obediently on her lap, pursed her lips, and shook her head, indicating she wouldn’t say another word.
“So you think he cares about you, and my thoughts are just redundant paranoid fantasies?” Su Mi’s voice betrayed no emotion, sounding perfectly casual.
“Of course not!” Lin Nanyue said hurriedly.
Su Mi watched her quietly. Suddenly, the finger tapping on the table stopped. She straightened up, turned back, and put her glasses back on, returning her attention to the bright laptop screen.
The spacious living room fell into silence.
This scene panicked Lin Nanyue. She sat there for a moment before tentatively inching closer.
First, she cautiously placed a hand on Su Mi’s shoulder. Seeing no resistance, she continued, wrapping both arms around her shoulders and slowly pressing herself against Professor Su’s back.
Su Mi had changed out of her earlier clothes and was now wearing a set of smooth, silk lake-blue pajamas. It felt cool at first touch, but the warmth beneath the fabric quickly seeped through.
Though Su Mi’s eyes remained on the text on the screen, her thoughts had long been disrupted by the person behind her.
“Sister… are you… jealous?” Lin Nanyue leaned her head close to Su Mi’s ear, her voice carrying a hint of inquiry.
Her hand on the mouse moved aimlessly. Su Mi’s voice was steady. “No.”
Lin Nanyue watched the screen scrolling continuously and smiled wider. “Professor Su, are you reading ten lines at a glance?”
The hand on the mouse froze. The tips of Su Mi’s ears turned a barely perceptible shade of red.
Lin Nanyue’s arms were still around Su Mi’s shoulders. She had to lift herself up slightly to stay close, but the posture was tiring, so she pulled back a bit.
Sensing the sudden departure of the person behind her, Su Mi’s brow furrowed. Just as she was about to turn, a pair of arms wrapped around her waist.
Lin Nanyue clung to her back like a sloth and whispered, “Actually, the reason I stayed there was a bit selfish.”
Su Mi felt the girl’s breath on her back. “What selfish reason?”
“The boss pays well. Much higher than other internship positions,” Lin Nanyue said candidly.
Su Mi understood why she would choose that, but still asked, “Weren’t you afraid of a trap?”
“I was.”
The interview had been recommended by a teacher. Many people interviewed, but in the end, only Lin Nanyue was kept. Initially, she hadn’t wanted to stay because she wanted to find an internship with Yan Han, but the salary Fang Qian offered made her hesitate.
Lin Nanyue had seen many stories about high-paying jobs being fronts for pyramid schemes. However, since Senior Fang Qian was quite famous in the department even after graduation and came recommended by a teacher, her doubts were largely dispelled.
Furthermore, her family really needed the money at that time. Her mother was worried every day about repaying debts, so she gritted her teeth and accepted.
She just didn’t expect that the difficulties of the internship wouldn’t be the work itself, but the sudden malice and rumors from those around her. She knew the senior was handsome and came from a good family, but she didn’t realize so many people interviewed with ulterior motives.
