- Chapter 46 - Cold Professor X Obedient Beauty
When Lin Nanyue returned to the dormitory, Yan Han was sitting on her stool eating and watching a variety show.
Another roommate was packing her things, she was preparing to move out for her internship. Their relationship was neither good nor bad, so she didn’t say much upon seeing Lin Nanyue.
Hearing the movement, Yan Han turned around, gave a muffled greeting while eating, and then, as if remembering something, turned back to ask: “Huh? Were you wearing these clothes yesterday?”
The roommate packing nearby also glanced at Lin Nanyue.
Lin Nanyue looked down at her clothes and said, “Yesterday’s clothes got soaked in the rain; I couldn’t wear them anymore.”
She didn’t explain where the clothes came from, offering only a vague explanation.
“Oh, I see.” Luckily, Yan Han had only asked in passing and didn’t take it to heart, returning to her variety show.
Lin Nanyue sat in her chair for a while, feeling a faint dizziness in her head again, so she climbed into bed to try and get some more sleep.
After she pulled the bed curtains, most of the light was blocked out. The sounds of the variety show drifted in from outside, followed by the sound of the door closing as the roommate finished packing and left.
Once she lay down, however, Lin Nanyue found she couldn’t fall back asleep. The moment she grew quiet, she subconsciously began to think of Su Mi.
Staring blankly at the top of the bed canopy, she finally picked up her phone and began scrolling aimlessly. But as if possessed, she unexpectedly clicked on her chat interface with Yan Han.
The conversation between the two was still stuck on last night, further up was that video.
Holding her phone, Lin Nanyue looked at the person frozen in the center of the video. She let out a soft sigh, though she didn’t know what she was sighing about.
She rolled over, and her finger accidentally brushed the video. The loud, noisy audio played instantly, startling Yan Han below.
Yan Han asked, “Nanyue, are you watching that video I sent you yesterday?”
Lin Nanyue had no choice but to admit it. “Yeah.”
Speaking of the video, Yan Han perked up instantly. “That video has practically been analyzed to death now. Everyone is guessing what kind of person could be Professor Su’s partner. People have even written massive analyses just on whether it’s a man or a woman.”
It was only then that Lin Nanyue realized that when she first saw the video, she immediately thought of that set of clothes in the dormitory that didn’t fit Su Mi’s style.
In other words, she had subconsciously assumed Su Mi’s partner was a woman. Perhaps deep down, she felt no man was worthy of her.
“So, what did their analysis conclude?” Lin Nanyue’s curiosity was piqued.
“Most say it’s a girlfriend,” Yan Han said.
“Why?” Lin Nanyue pulled back a corner of the curtain to look at Yan Han.
“Students from her class said so. They say that although Professor Su seems the same toward everyone, someone analyzed that she is noticeably more tolerant and friendly when facing women.”
Hearing this, Lin Nanyue couldn’t help but think of everything that had happened to her.
Yan Han continued to ramble about the rumors below, but Lin Nanyue had already lain back down.
Toward the end, Yan Han even asked if she wanted to go crash a class in the neighboring department together, saying many people went to Professor Su’s lectures and she never drove them away.
But Lin Nanyue declined, saying she had been too busy lately.
She clicked on Su Mi’s WeChat Moments, trying to find any traces, but the other woman’s feed consisted mostly of professional information and reposts. There were very few traces of her personal life, and she found nothing regarding the existence of a partner.
Disappointed, Lin Nanyue exited the interface and buried herself in her pillow, telling herself not to think about it anymore.
Once she returned the clothes, perhaps they would be “even.”
A few days later.
“Hello, Professor Su.”
In the hallway, Su Mi nodded to the student greeting her. “Hello.”
Her class was in the afternoon today. Since there was still some time before it started, she went to the school office to wait.
The office was empty. Occasionally, a few teachers and students passed through, but overall it was quite peaceful.
Just before heading to class, she stood up to pack her things. Her phone suddenly received a message. She glanced at it, then expressionlessly tucked her phone away and walked out.
When Su Mi arrived at the classroom, it was somewhat rowdy. Many people were whispering and discussing someone sitting in a seat.
As Su Mi scanned the students, her brow furrowed imperceptibly when she saw one of them.
In this information age, she couldn’t completely isolate herself from the outside world, but she hadn’t expected this situation to arise so soon.
When the bell rang, Su Mi began her lecture. Nothing unusual happened until the end.
Her classes usually ended with a Q&A session, but this time she restricted it strictly to professional questions. The number of questioners dropped significantly, and it ended in less than five minutes.
Su Mi took her things and left for the office. As she walked ahead, she could vaguely hear sounds from behind.
“Sister Su Mi.” Fang Qian called out to her just before she entered the office.
Su Mi was forced to stop and turn around.
“Sister Su Mi, when did you get back? Why didn’t I know?” Fang Qian said, taking a step forward. If he hadn’t accidentally seen the news in the alumni group, he would still be in the dark.
Su Mi shifted her textbooks to her other hand, a hint of confusion in her eyes. “Do I need to report my itinerary to you?”
“That’s not what I meant,” Fang Qian quickly explained.
Just then, other teachers finishing their classes walked toward the office. Seeing Su Mi, one greeted her.
“Professor Su, finished with class?” The teacher then glanced at Fang Qian. “Your student?”
Su Mi denied it, “No.” Having said that, she entered the office herself.
When she came out, Fang Qian was still waiting outside. Upon seeing her, he hurried over to speak.
“Still have business?” Su Mi was visibly impatient.
Fang Qian acted as if he didn’t see her expression. “Since you’re back, let’s have dinner tonight as a welcome back feast for you.”
“Unnecessary,” Su Mi rejected him directly. “Our relationship isn’t close enough for that.”
Fang Qian wasn’t angry instead, he smiled. “Sister Su Mi, we’ve known each other for over twenty years. Your personality really never changes. We haven’t seen each other in so many years, don’t you want to know what I’m doing now?”
Although few people were passing by, it wasn’t empty. A few passersby turned their heads to look several times.
“No, I’m not interested.” Su Mi checked the time. “Are you finished?”
Fang Qian wanted to say more, but the phone in his pocket rang. He hung up, but it rang again immediately, so he had to answer it.
“I have something urgent to handle, so I have to go. Let’s make an appointment another day,” Fang Qian said apologetically after finishing the call.
Su Mi ignored him and let him leave. Only when he disappeared down the stairwell did she feel the surrounding air grow fresher.
However, she then thought: since Fang Qian knew she was back, she wondered how much Lin Nanyue knew.
Looking at the few messages between them on her phone and recalling Lin Nanyue’s abnormal behavior, Su Mi couldn’t help but overthink.
Because she was so deep in thought, she was quite dismissive of people greeting her on the way today.
Returning to her car, she went to place her things in the passenger seat when she saw the bag beside it.
She had brought Lin Nanyue’s clothes with her when she left the house today.
In the past few days, Su Mi and Lin Nanyue hadn’t met, mainly because Lin Nanyue was busy with her graduation project and internship. Su Mi also didn’t want their meeting to be a rushed affair just for the sake of returning clothes.
So, the matter had been dragged out.
Their chats over these days were mostly simple Q&As. Su Mi didn’t dare say too much, fearing as the system had warned, that it would backfire and push her further away.
But now it seemed she couldn’t wait any longer. She had to hurry, and she had planned to find her today anyway.
So, Su Mi sent a confirmation message.
Only after receiving a reply did she put down her phone and drive over.
When Su Mi arrived, she saw Lin Nanyue from a distance standing by the roadside, head down, making a phone call, holding two bags in her other hand.
She parked the car and walked over. Getting closer, she heard Lin Nanyue’s anxious voice.
“I put the measurement data in the third folder on the desk. I checked it several times; it’s impossible to have made a mistake.”
“It’s missing? But I…”
Lin Nanyue’s words stopped abruptly. She looked at her phone and realized the other person had hung up. She lowered the phone, a look of disappointment on her face, not even noticing Su Mi walking up beside her.
“What happened?” Su Mi asked.
Lin Nanyue was startled by the sudden voice. “Pro… Professor Su?”
Su Mi looked at the phone in her hand. “A problem with your internship?”
Lin Nanyue tucked her phone away, feigning nonchalance. “It’s nothing, just a small issue.”
She looked at Su Mi’s hands but found them empty, even though they had agreed to exchange clothes today.
Lin Nanyue first handed the two clothing bags in her hand to Su Mi: “These are… your clothes.”
Su Mi took the bags and led her into the car, explaining: “Your clothes are in the trunk. It’s dinner time; let’s eat first, and then I’ll drive you back to school.”
Lin Nanyue hesitated and shook her head. “I probably can’t today. I have something to do.”
Su Mi: “Work-related?”
Lin Nanyue nodded.
“Have you considered changing your internship?” Su Mi asked.
To be honest, Lin Nanyue had thought about it, but this internship simply paid too much.
Sometimes, people have to bow to worldly things.
“I have a friend whose work matches your major. Her company is recruiting interns recently, and the benefits look good. Maybe you can check it out.” Su Mi said while forwarding the company name and recruitment info to her.
Lin Nanyue looked down at the message. “Thank you, Professor Su, I’ll…”
Knock, knock!
The driver’s side window was suddenly tapped. Su Mi rolled it down, revealing Song Lingyin’s bright and beautiful face.
“What a coincidence! Why are you downstairs at my company? Oh, there’s a little beauty inside too.” Song Lingyin leaned on the window and greeted Lin Nanyue in the passenger seat, then smiled at Su Mi. “Professor Su, who are you dating behind my back? Introduce her to me.”
Su Mi glanced at her with no intention of introducing them. Instead, she closed the window and turned to Lin Nanyue. “I’m going down for a moment.”
Through the window and the rearview mirror, Lin Nanyue saw Su Mi get out of the car and hand a clothing bag from the trunk to Song Lingyin. Then the two stood at the back talking for quite a while. From her perspective, they seemed to be standing quite close.
Sitting inside the car, Lin Nanyue couldn’t hear what they were saying or see what they were doing.
When people are unable to obtain certain information, they subconsciously imagine more to fill in the blanks.
A few minutes later, Su Mi returned to the car. For some reason, she suddenly felt the air pressure in the car was a bit low.
She tried to break the silence. “That person just now is the friend I mentioned. Her company is…”
Lin Nanyue leaned her forehead against the glass window and said gloomily, “I’m not going.”
She definitely wasn’t going.
