- Chapter 27 - Eldest Senior Sister x Little Junior Sister
Those words were like a long, deep fissure carved into the Mountain Lord’s heart. She wanted to reach out and stop the other woman, but she froze halfway, not daring to take another step. She could only watch as Su Mi brushed past her.
Su Mi no longer had the energy to spare for the Mountain Lord’s behavior. A drop of cold sweat slid down her pale chin, and her breathing was no longer as steady as usual, but her footsteps leading out never faltered.
The massive disturbance within the City Lord’s Manor had naturally drawn many guards to investigate.
What the crowd saw upon arrival was a house in ruins; even a corner of the eaves had been blasted away. Expensive glazed tiles lay shattered across the ground, glinting piercingly under the sunlight. Though they hadn’t witnessed the fight inside, the scene before them was enough to strike fear into the hearts of these ordinary people.
The guards didn’t dare step forward to inspect the interior. They only saw Su Mi walking out carrying someone, no one else was in sight.
They stood at a distance, watching warily, even retreating a few steps as Su Mi approached.
Su Mi felt as if every breath she took was saturated with the scent of blood. Her footsteps faltered, and her knee struck the floor tiles with a heavy thud. Her grip suddenly slackened, but she gritted her teeth and tightened her arms, refusing to let the person in her embrace slip away.
She exhaled several sharp breaths that tasted of rusted iron, her vision swimming with darkness. It took a long moment for her to recover slightly.
Just then, a series of hurried footsteps echoed from the distance. The guards looked back and shouted sternly, “Who goes there? How dare you trespass into the City Lord’s Manor?!”
It was Fang Yun and her group. They had brought along the shopkeeper, whose face looked somewhat defeated, the guards clearly recognized him.
Ultimately, it was the shopkeeper who stepped forward to stop the guards, allowing the disciples of Qingyang Mountain to approach without hindrance.
“Eldest Senior Sister!”
Before the disciples could surround her, Su Mi turned to look back one last time. Through the broken, wide-open doors, she saw that the black-clad figure was gone from the room, she must have left before the others arrived.
“Eldest Senior Sister,” Fang Yun stepped forward, following Su Mi’s gaze. “How are you and Junior Sister Wanqi? Are the injuries serious?”
Su Mi turned her face. Her voice was soft but clear, as if she were using the last of her strength to speak: “We are fine for now. There are still people inside, take some men and bring them out.”
Though the formation inside had been destroyed, a massive hole had collapsed into the floor. No one could guarantee the safety of the structure, which was why she had used her final strength to carry Wanqi Yue out herself.
At this moment, Su Mi could no longer see things clearly at a distance. She could only distinguish people by their voices. The taut muscles in her arms were the only thing sustaining her final bit of persistence.
“Go, quickly.”
Fang Yun looked at her pale complexion with hesitation, but ultimately stood up and led several people toward the heavily damaged building to search for survivors.
Su Mi pursed her lips and lowered her eyelashes. Even Wanqi Yue’s face in her arms was becoming a blur. She looked toward the front and spoke: “Fifth Junior Sister, come here.”
Qiao Wuyu, who had been following from behind, was already heading toward her. Hearing the call, she hurried over. Just as she squatted down to speak, her Eldest Senior Sister reached out and handed the Little Junior Sister into her arms.
Su Mi was now as white as paper. The cold sweat soaking her forehead had drenched the stray hairs at her temples as if she had been fished out of a river. She struggled to swallow, forcing down the surge of blood in her throat.
“Check her injuries…”
Qiao Wuyu responded while looking at her Eldest Senior Sister. In truth, she felt the Little Junior Sister’s injuries could wait Eldest Senior Sister looked far more critical.
“Those people inside and I have all been poisoned with…” Su Mi exhaled a trembling breath to finish the sentence, “…Tengxiu Grass.”
Having finished her words, Su Mi’s body tilted. She propped herself up with one hand to keep from collapsing.
Without Wanqi Yue in her arms, Su Mi seemed to lose the pillar of support that kept her conscious. The voices in her ears felt as if they were coming through a layer of water, muffled and unintelligible. Every breath felt like her throat was blocked by wet cotton, miserably tight.
The taste of blood began to seep through her teeth. Belatedly, her spiritual veins began to burn as if they were being roasted over a fire. It felt as if thousands of needles were stabbing into her brain, dragging a sharp pain into her ears as well.
This was the price of forcibly overusing her spiritual power.
Su Mi closed her eyes. A crack sounded from the stone slab beneath her hand. A mouthful of blood flecked with foam splattered onto the grey-white stone, and she collapsed, losing consciousness.
Su Mi felt her consciousness imprisoned in darkness for a long time before a sliver of light finally appeared.
As the light expanded, a colossal snow white tree standing at the edge of heaven and earth appeared before her. From a distance, she saw a woman reclining on a thick branch as if napping. Her long skirt draped downward, swaying gently in the wind.
A vast sea of clouds floated around them, obstructing the view beneath the tree.
Because they were far away, Su Mi could not see the woman clearly, nor could she move. She could only watch from her spot.
Until a figure faintly appeared beneath the sea of clouds. The moment that person appeared, the woman on the branch seemed to wake. She raised her hand and swept her sleeve, clearing the clouds below to reveal the figure..
Just as the mist was about to dissipate, Su Mi suddenly felt a puff of warm air against the back of her hand. Subconsciously, she looked down at her hand, and simultaneously, she felt as if she were stepping into a void.
When she opened her eyes again, she saw a plain bed canopy. That warm breath was still falling on the back of her hand, it even felt somewhat soft.
Su Mi turned her head slightly and saw a head resting by the bed. From her angle, she could see a graceful, straight nose and beautifully shaped lips that were slightly closed, revealing the faint silhouette of a philtrum.
Wanqi Yue was holding her hand and half-pillowing her head on it. The “softness” Su Mi felt was Wanqi Yue’s cheek.
Her pale fingers moved slightly, feeling a bit numb. As she touched the girl’s cheek, she gave it a light scratch, like brushing against a piece of warm, soft jade.
Disturbed, Wanqi Yue’s brow furrowed slightly. She even rubbed her face against Su Mi’s hand twice, as if acting spoiled.
Seeing this, a smile tugged at the corners of Su Mi’s lips. She stopped teasing her, but when she turned her head back, she was met with the staring, golden eyes of Meiqiu (Coal Ball).
“…”
The sudden sight gave even Su Mi a start.
Meiqiu looked relieved.
[Master, you’re finally awake. You’ve been unconscious for seven whole days. If your life signs hadn’t shown that you could wake up normally, I would have applied for an early world extraction for you.]
If she remained in a permanent coma, there was no point in staying in this world. However, early extraction meant mission failure, it wasn’t done unless absolutely necessary.
Su Mi gave a faint hum of acknowledgement. She closed her eyes: “First, tell me what exactly is going on.”
[When the system rolled back the world, the original female lead in her soul form was accidentally left behind. This caused her to return to this timeline along with you. But now, the system cannot intervene to send her back.]
“That certainly is ‘accidental’ enough,” Su Mi praised sarcastically. “So, what am I supposed to do next?”
Two female leads in one world, how was she to complete her mission?
[During your coma, the Main System stated that your mission remains unchanged. The current world’s female lead takes priority. Upon completion, you will receive double rewards and early permanent staff status.]
Hearing this, Su Mi fell into silence, seemingly weighing her options. After a long while, she turned to look at the sleeping Wanqi Yue beside her. “I understand.”
Meiqiu suddenly felt uncertain.
[Master, do you really understand?]
Su Mi gave a nonchalant reply.
A shadow suddenly appeared outside the door, moving toward it.
Knock, knock…
The sudden knocking startled Wanqi Yue awake from her nap. She looked up dazed and only relaxed when she saw it was the Fifth Senior Sister entering.
Qiao Wuyu entered carrying a bowl of medicine. Yawning, she handed it to Wanqi Yue: “I tried a new prescription last night, maybe it’ll work this time. Little Junior Sister, hold this for a second.”
Wanqi Yue reached out to take it, only then realizing her hand was still tightly interlaced with Su Mi’s. She quickly let go, looking at Fifth Senior Sister with some embarrassment.
The latter had already learned to ignore such sights over the past few days. A green sprout grew from Qiao Wuyu’s palm, seeking out Su Mi’s wrist and wrapping around it. Pale green spiritual energy flowed along the sprout’s veins and merged into Su Mi’s body.
Su Mi could feel a gentle spiritual force flowing through her parched spiritual veins, like a refreshing stream flowing through a nearly dried-up riverbed. She unconsciously relaxed, immersing herself in the comfort.
Standing nearby, Wanqi Yue couldn’t help but ask, “Fifth Senior Sister, how is Eldest Senior Sister today?”
Qiao Wuyu spoke the truth: “Not great.”
Anyone who had overdrawn their spiritual veins and body to that extent wouldn’t feel good. To not have become a disabled person, one would have to thank the Three Pure Sovereigns for their protection.
Seeing the visible disappointment on Wanqi Yue’s face, Qiao Wuyu comforted her: “But don’t worry too much. Eldest Senior Sister’s condition is stable for now. I will work hard to heal her.”
Once all the spiritual veins had been nourished once, Qiao Wuyu retracted the sprout. Having consumed a lot of spiritual energy without rest, she also looked quite exhausted.
“I need to go back and catch some sleep. Junior Sister, hurry and feed her the medicine. Use the old method.” Qiao Wuyu rubbed her sleepy face, trying to wake herself up.
Wanqi Yue obeyed softly: “Oh, okay.”
Su Mi, lying on the bed pretending to sleep, felt a wave of doubt. She wondered if it would be better to open her eyes now.
In the moment she was hesitating, she felt a shadow loom over her. A familiar scent drifted closer, and she subconsciously gripped the brocade quilt beneath her.
She felt her upper body being gently lifted, the movement was incredibly tender until she was reclining in someone’s embrace.
Sometimes, once you hesitate, you miss the window of opportunity. Su Mi was in that position now; she didn’t know if she should still open her eyes.
It wasn’t until she felt her chin being gently gripped and lifted that her heart skipped a beat.
The hesitation of faking sleep vanished instantly. She snapped her eyes open.
And found herself staring face to face with Qiao Wuyu, who was holding a medicine bowl in one hand and a spoon in the other, ready to feed her.
Su Mi: “…”
Qiao Wuyu: “…Eldest Senior Sister, your eyes look very… disappointed.”
