- Chapter 19 - Senior Sister x Junior Sister
Wanqi Yue’s memory of her time as that flower was somewhat fragmented, but fortunately, she didn’t pay much attention to that small interlude.
Su Mi took the opportunity to change the subject, briefly explaining her next plans. Knowing this, Wanqi Yue naturally had no objections. However, before setting off, she raised another question.
Wanqi Yue raised her hand to summon her spiritual sword: “Senior Sister, do you feel that the spiritual energy seems a bit strange?”
Su Mi frowned: “Hmm?”
“I feel that compared to before, the spiritual energy seems to have decreased even more.” Having previously been a “flower,” Wanqi Yue’s perceptions of other things had been blurred, now that she had returned to normal, she naturally sensed the difference.
Su Mi remained silent for a moment before saying slowly, “…I didn’t notice before.”
Because of the wound on Wanqi Yue’s back, her spiritual energy was being consumed every moment, so she naturally couldn’t feel the subtle changes in the environment.
“This place really isn’t a place to stay for long.” Wanqi Yue flipped her wrist deftly, holding her sword as she walked to Su Mi’s side. “Senior Sister, shall we go now?”
Su Mi nodded.
By now, the sky was dimly lit, allowing them to see the blurred landscape.
The beasts from before were still resting where they were, with only a few standing up to roam nearby. Two had even walked to the base of where Su Mi and Wanqi Yue were positioned.
Wanqi Yue gripped her sword, eager to try it out, but Su Mi dragged her away without mercy.
“Spiritual energy is limited, try not to waste it.”
Unfortunately, despite her intentions, things often went against her wishes.
The previously calm sky was suddenly pierced by a thick bolt of purple lightning that struck directly into the forest. A raging fire ignited instantly, the flames turning half the sky red.
The birds in the forest took flight abruptly, circling and screaming in the air.
This commotion startled the resting beasts, who roared deeply toward the forest. Following closely behind, a massive crack appeared, tearing through the ground. Giant rocks tumbled and collided, causing many beasts to lose their lives in the chaos.
The ground beneath Su Mi and her companion also shattered. Su Mi acted quickly, grabbing Wanqi Yue to prevent them from being separated.
“Go!” The two leaped down from the heights, their wind-blown hemlines overlapping.
In that moment, Su Mi suddenly turned her head. Amidst the scene of colliding boulders and crumbling earth, she once again saw the golden light she had glimpsed before faintly, it looked like a human figure.
The figure moved constantly among the beasts, wherever it went, gray-white corpses fell. Then, it swept a wave of golden light over the cracked earth and streams, causing them to fuse back into place.
However, the speed of this person’s repairs was far slower than the rate of destruction.
As if sensing Su Mi’s gaze, the figure tossed aside a beast’s corpse and turned to look over.
Su Mi’s eyelid jumped. For some reason, she felt that this person was using these beasts to compensate for the losses of the illusion realm.
After that moment of eye contact, the fleeing beasts seemed to receive a summons. They all turned around simultaneously and charged toward Su Mi and Wanqi Yue as they were about to land.
The figure enveloped in golden light stood still, watching.
Su Mi’s heart sank. As her toes touched the ground, she used the momentum to spin, quickly drawing a talisman in the air and pushing it toward the charging beasts.
The beasts seemed to be imprisoned by an invisible seal. In the next moment, fire flared up, and the trapped creatures roared in agony until only a handful of white ash remained to scatter in the wind.
Wanqi Yue’s long sword left its sheath. Amidst her fluttering red dress, a reddish-gold light erupted from her blade. She severed the forelimbs of a lunging beast with one strike and, before even landing, raised her hand to slit its throat.
Red blood surged from the wound instantly, staining the ground.
Ever since they realized this illusion was draining spiritual energy, the two stopped hoarding their power and focused on ending battles quickly to find a way out as soon as possible.
However, no matter how fast they fought, the beasts kept coming like a tide, and piles of white bones began to accumulate at their feet.
Perhaps intimidated by their ferocity, the speed of the subsequent attacks slowed down, and the beasts became more cautious.
“Tsk.”
An out of place sound echoed through the slaughter.
Wanqi Yue also saw the person standing among the beasts. The creatures around the figure ignored them, even showing a hint of reverence.
The figure had clearly targeted her. While commanding the beasts to pounce on Wanqi Yue, several small golden daggers followed closely behind.
Seeing this, Su Mi abandoned her relatively safe position. She side stepped a pouncing beast, grabbed the protruding spine on its back to vault over, and leaped to Wanqi Yue’s side to pull her away.
The claws of a beast standing before the golden figure grazed past, tearing Su Mi’s sleeve and leaving a bloody trail.
As they fought, the collapse of the illusion seemed to grow more severe.
The figure in the golden light seemed unable to wait any longer. They reached out and stopped a beast, drawing pale gold light from it into their hand; the beast immediately fell dead.
That bit of golden light fell into the cracks in the ground, making them heal perfectly, but this was merely a drop in the bucket.
The person walked a few steps forward. The golden light surrounding them gradually faded, revealing a woman in a golden gown embroidered with large silver floral patterns that looked lifelike in the wind. Her body had a slight transparency, clearly indicating she was just a spiritual entity left behind.
“I don’t know why Bai Zhi threw you here, but as you can see, the illusion is collapsing. The spiritual energy from these beasts isn’t enough to fill the void. I have no choice but to take your lives prematurely to mend the gap.”
Bai Zhi? Isn’t that the name of the Medical Immortal?
Wanqi Yue was stunned to hear the name. She turned to say something to Su Mi, but upon seeing Su Mi’s expression, her surprise instantly turned to worry: “Senior Sister, why do you look so pale?”
Su Mi shook her head to indicate she was fine and looked at the woman: “How do you know we weren’t captured by mistake?”
The woman raised an eyebrow: “Impossible. Bai Zhi has always been kind-hearted and would never harm someone without reason. I gave her the Twin Mirrors precisely because I feared she would be bullied too much and couldn’t bring herself to kill. You are the first pair I’ve seen thrown in here.”
The implication was that they must have done something truly heinous to be cast inside.
Wanqi Yue countered: “But the one who captured us doesn’t seem to be the Bai Zhi you speak of. Furthermore, the Bai Zhi we know seems different from the one you remember.”
These words didn’t cause a flicker of hesitation on the woman’s face: “Words alone are no proof. No one in this world knows how to open the Twin Mirrors except for me and her. My purpose as this spiritual entity is to protect this illusion. I will not be swayed by the words of others to doubt my trust in her.”
At this point, the woman finally realized: “You are trying to stall for time, waiting for the illusion to shatter.”
Su Mi remained expressionless: “We are merely kindly reminding you not to be deceived. Moreover, looking at the state of this collapse, even using the two of us would likely be futile.”
The woman smiled faintly: “If it is her, what does it matter if I am deceived? As for this illusion, my luck is good, the golden cores of you two will be enough for me to repair it.”
“…”
Su Mi could tell. This person was a total “love-brain.”
Wanqi Yue couldn’t bear to watch: “Do you really trust her that much?”
The woman pressed her palms together and slowly pulled them apart, a golden light appearing in her palm: “Do you think the person beside you would ever betray you?”
Wanqi Yue blurted out: “Impossible!”
The woman’s smile deepened. The small golden ball of light flew out and merged into a nearby beast. That beast’s body suddenly swelled, pale gold patterns crawling over its black hide, and its blood-red pupils took on a golden hue.
“Go.” As her voice fell, the golden beast lunged fiercely, sending sand and stones flying.
Wanqi Yue leaped forward, raising her sword to block the beast’s attack.
Su Mi stepped up, placing her hand on the blade. Pale blue runes gradually appeared on the silver sword, and together they forced the beast back.
However, the impact was too great. Wanqi Yue stabbed her sword into the ground to anchor herself, but her body still leaned back involuntarily. Fortunately, Su Mi reached out and supported her waist to help her steady herself.
The sky darkened again. Amidst the thunder and lightning, torrential rain began to fall.
The woman turned to look at the distant sky, her expression growing solemn. After a moment of weighing her options, she decided to stabilize the situation over there first.
Although she left, Su Mi and Wanqi Yue had already consumed a great deal of spiritual energy. Facing the enhanced beast now became grueling.
Su Mi used a few strokes to freeze the movements of most of the beasts, while Wanqi Yue killed them one by one. Their coordination was seamless, clearing the nearby enemies within seconds.
Only the hardest one to kill remained, along with some others hovering on the outskirts, afraid to get close.
Wanqi Yue fixed her gaze on the golden beast and gripped her sword as she moved forward.
Seeing this, Su Mi sent Meiqiu (Coal Ball) to help while she handled any stragglers.
Just as Wanqi Yue was cornering the golden beast, the other beasts looked for a chance to ambush her. Su Mi pushed her remaining spiritual energy to the limit, reaching Wanqi Yue’s side and throwing a palm strike to deflect a sweeping claw.
Immediately afterward, a sharp pain shot through her back. A claw as thick as a wrist pierced her shoulder for a moment. Without changing her expression, she condensed an ice blade to sever the claw behind her, feeling the warm blood flowing uncontrollably down her clothes.
At the same time, Wanqi Yue pinned the golden beast to the ground with her sword, gasping for breath. The wound on her own back suddenly erupted in intense pain; she thought it was because she had moved too violently, causing it to reopen.
She endured the pain and looked back, only to see her pale Senior Sister standing behind her, clutching her shoulder as blood seeped through her fingers.
Wanqi Yue couldn’t think. She stumbled toward her, staring at the large bloodstain on Su Mi’s body. Her mind went blank, and a sense of dread washed over her.
It was as if she had seen this scene before. After a long pause, she squeezed out a hoarse voice: “Senior Sister…”
Su Mi’s ears were ringing. Her lips, wet from the rain, moved slightly as she spoke in a cold voice: “Move.”
The woman of the illusion was currently preoccupied and couldn’t return. Their best option now was to hide and wait for the illusion to collapse on its own.
Fortunately, the constant pain in her shoulder kept Su Mi somewhat conscious. Before leaving, she grabbed Meiqiu and took it with them.
Under Wanqi Yue’s lead, the two found a place to take temporary shelter.
Wanqi Yue used the breath-hiding talisman Su Mi had given her earlier to mask their presence.
Once she relaxed, Su Mi felt drowsy.
Wanqi Yue’s eyes fell on Su Mi’s shoulder. Remembering the medicine from the Fifth Senior Sister, she began searching through Su Mi’s belongings.
Su Mi didn’t have the energy to stop her, so she let her fuss. However, when Wanqi Yue prepared to strip her clothes, she couldn’t help but open her eyes.
She was a step too slow. The blood-stained fabric on her shoulder had already been pulled down, revealing the mangled, bloody hole.
At this moment, Su Mi still had the fuzzy thought: Truly, what goes around comes around when it comes to stripping people’s clothes.
Seeing the wound, Wanqi Yue’s heart clenched with a needle-like sting. She didn’t dare touch the injury, only carefully sprinkling the medicinal powder onto it.
The sudden pain made Su Mi turn her head away, her shoulder tensing and the veins in her neck faintly appearing.
“How could this be?” Wanqi Yue muttered as she looked at the powder.
The medicine seemed to have little effect on the wound. Clearly, when she was injured, the medicine had..
She suddenly thought of the pain in her own back that had flared up again. In an instant, everything connected. The answer was right in front of her.
“Senior Sister, did I drag you down?”
“No.” Su Mi wasn’t lying. If not for Wanqi Yue, they couldn’t have escaped unscathed just now. “Don’t overthink it. Resting and recovering is the most important thing right now.”
Strange noises continued to come from outside; the “situation” seemed exceptionally intense.
During this wait, Su Mi felt her consciousness gradually sinking and her thoughts becoming sluggish.
“I’m going to rest for a bit. If anything happens, wake me up, understood?”
Wanqi Yue agreed, her voice choked.
After speaking, Su Mi also instructed Meiqiu to keep a close eye on Wanqi Yue before losing her perception of the outside world.
Drip.
A clear drop of water fell onto the back of her hand. Su Mi’s closed eyes twitched slightly. She opened them slowly to find the light was somewhat dim.
Another drop fell.
Su Mi moved her hand, only to find it was being held tightly. As she tried to pull back, she aggravated the wound on her shoulder. She frowned and endured it, looking at Wanqi Yue, who was bowing her head beside her.
“Junior Sister?”
Hearing that title again, Wanqi Yue’s eyelids trembled, her heart feeling as if a lifetime had passed.
Su Mi felt a bit helpless. Why was this person suddenly crying uncontrollably? Could she still be feeling guilty about the injury?
The wound made her feel groggy. Just as she was thinking of how to comfort her, the other person finally spoke.
In the darkness, Wanqi Yue pressed Su Mi’s hand to her lips in an ambiguous kiss, her raspy voice carrying a clear longing.
“Senior Sister, will you come away with me?”
