- Chapter 13 - The Senior Sister x Junior Sister
Su Mi, who had mysteriously been sprayed in the face, immediately squeezed her eyes shut. A lingering, cloyingly sweet fragrance wafted into her nose. Ignoring the pain in her back, she sat up and reached out to wipe her face, but her fingers met nothing, it was as if the mist had vanished into her skin.
“Senior Sister, are you alright?” Wanqi Yue’s voice came from beside her.
Su Mi let out a soft hum of acknowledgment. When she reopened her eyes, Wanqi Yue’s face was inches away from hers.
The girl was breathtakingly beautiful, beneath her curved brows were eyes as dark and clear as deep pools. Her skin was as delicate as warm jade, making her vermilion lips look like budding cherries. Those eyes, fixed on Su Mi, were brimming with worry and guilt.
Seeing that her Senior Sister remained silent, Wanqi Yue leaned in even closer.
Looking at the approaching protagonist, Su Mi’s heart skipped a beat. A strange sensation suddenly surged within her chest. She decisively looked away, she knew that if she kept looking, she might start having even more inexplicable thoughts.
Remembering the floral mist, Su Mi turned to identify the flower that had sprayed her.
However, just as she reached out, the pink flower suddenly elongated its green stem. With a “pop,” it pulled its “feet” out of the soft soil and scrambled away, its two green leaves swaying left and right in a frantic retreat.
Su Mi: “…”
For the first time in her life, she had witnessed a vivid interpretation of “sheer terror” performed by a plant.
She had wanted to investigate the purple mist, but now…
She could only ask Coalball, who had fallen in with them. But Coalball reported that it had lost its connection to the database, this space seemed to sever all ties with the outside world. In short, the system was currently useless.
Wanqi Yue hadn’t seen the purple mist earlier, but she saw Su Mi reach for the flower and saw the plant run away. Instinctively, she moved to bypass Su Mi to catch the flower for her, but because they were so close, she tripped.
She began to fall forward.
Before Su Mi could even process what was happening, her arms had already moved on their own, pulling the girl into her lap.
Wanqi Yue was now kneeling between Su Mi’s legs. Their different-colored robes overlapped and spread out around them. Her lower back was held tightly against Su Mi, their bodies pressed together so closely there wasn’t a gap between them. They could even feel the rise and fall of each other’s chests with every breath.
It wasn’t the first time Su Mi had been “close” to Wanqi Yue, but it was the first time she realized how slender and soft the girl’s waist was. A faint, elusive fragrance drifted from her.
Su Mi found it pleasant intoxicating, even.
Driven by a sudden urge to trace that scent, her nose brushed against a patch of warm skin. She focused her gaze, it was the jade-like curve of Wanqi Yue’s neck.
“!”
As if waking from a dream, Su Mi jerked her head away, though her skin still grazed the girl’s for a fleeting second.
Wanqi Yue didn’t know exactly what had happened, but the sensation of warm breath and the soft touch on her neck was undeniable. A light blush began to creep up to the tips of her ears.
“S-Senior Sister…”
Su Mi replied unsteadily, “Yes?”
She tried to observe her surroundings and think about their predicament to distract herself, but it was futile. Something was wrong.
“You’re holding me a bit too tight… I can’t breathe,” Wanqi Yue whispered, sounding embarrassed.
Su Mi realized she was still gripping the girl’s waist like a vice. “…Sorry.”
As she let go, she realized how compromising their posture was. Wanqi Yue scrambled off her and stood there, flustered and at a loss for words.
Su Mi, usually unflappable, felt her mind go blank. Unable to explain her behavior, she chose to ignore it. She took a deep breath, stood up, and asked, “Are you injured?”
Wanqi Yue’s face was still flushed. She paused, then shook her head. “No. What about you, Senior Sister?”
Aside from her aching shoulder, Su Mi was fine. “I’m alright.”
The Greyscale World
Having calmed down, the two finally began to survey their environment.
In the distance lay a continuous range of grey mountain ridges. Several clear, crisscrossing brooks wound their way down, merging into a stream that washed over stones protruding from the bed.
As they walked along the bank, they noticed that the shore was covered in exposed rocks and scattered with greyish-white skeletal remains. The wariness that should have hit them upon landing finally took hold.
The “inanimate” objects here all seemed to be shades of grey and white.
To test her theory, Su Mi swept out a blade of spiritual energy, slicing through the only blade of green grass on the bank. The moment the leaf was severed, it lost its color, turning grey-white as it hit the ground.
She looked down at her fingertips, her brow furrowing. “The spiritual energy here is being suppressed.”
Her output had been reduced by at least a third.
Wanqi Yue tried her own energy and found the same result. “How does that person always do this? If they can’t win a fight, they use underhanded tricks.” She had already blamed the shadow-man for her initial kidnapping.
Su Mi, however, was thinking of the shadow man’s words before they were sucked into the stone mirror. He seemed certain someone would come to save Wanqi Yue specifically Yue Qianzhou. He had likely intended to trap both of them in this mirror world.
But what was his goal? And that voice at the end… it sounded familiar.
The already dim sky began to darken further. If it went completely pitch black, their priority was to find shelter. Until they understood the rules of this place, they couldn’t afford to be reckless.
Nearby was a dense forest. Eventually, they found a hollow in a giant, dying tree. Grey rot was slowly climbing up from the roots, and the interior was nothing but lifeless grey. They gathered common leaves and grass to pad the floor.
Food wasn’t an issue since they had both reached the stage of Inedia (fasting). Wanqi Yue’s group had only eaten at the inn out of habit and gluttony, but after being poisoned once, they wouldn’t make that mistake again.
During all this, Su Mi couldn’t stop watching Wanqi Yue.
She didn’t know what was wrong with her. Today, every single thing Wanqi Yue did seemed… incredibly pleasing to the eye. She had to force herself to look away.
By the time they finished their preparations, the world outside was dark. Inside the hollow, they could only see the vague outlines of each other. In the gloom, the chirping of unknown insects echoed from the distance.
Su Mi stared at the faint silhouette before her.
“Take off your clothes.”
