- Chapter 36 - Her Body Suddenly Felt the Other's Warmth
When Yang Xueying walked into the hospital room, there were no longer any visible traces of tears on her face. She took the lunch boxes from the two of them and thanked them in a low voice before saying, “I’ve troubled you both these past two days. You don’t need to bring me food tomorrow. I’m preparing to be discharged.”
Seeing them looking at her, she explained further, “I’ve already asked Dr. Xu, and she said I can leave.”
Xu Xinlan, who had followed her into the room, arched an eyebrow upon hearing this and then nodded as Yang requested.
Since she had made up her mind, Li Yan and Lin Yishu didn’t say much more. It worked out well, as both of them had to go to the factory the next day anyway, making things simpler.
After Yang finished her meal, the two took the washed lunch boxes and headed home.
The atmosphere on the way back was completely different from the way there. Not only did Lin Yishu take the initiative to chat, but her hand also gripped Li Yan’s waist tightly. It seemed the conversation at the hospital had truly been effective, and Li Yan finally felt completely at ease.
The next morning, when Li Yan opened her eyes, the spot beside her was already empty.
She instinctively bolted upright, her eyes searching the room, only to freeze when she saw someone sitting by the bed.
Lin Yishu had her back turned, changing her clothes.
Perhaps sensing the movement, a flash of her ivory-white back was quickly covered. The person facing away from her turned her head with a light chuckle and asked, “Does it look good?”
Li Yan almost nodded instinctively but restrained herself at the last second.
Whether she answered “yes” or “no,” it was a trap!
The best response was to pretend she hadn’t seen a thing. So, she looked over blankly. “Ah? Why are you up so early?”
Lin Yishu saw through her act but didn’t expose her, only letting out a soft, knowing hum in her heart.
It’s fine, we have a long time ahead of us. She didn’t believe Li Yan could hold out forever.
The two of them did some simple tidying up, and after eating breakfast, they headed out.
They had already informed the family of the news when they returned the night before, so the whole family was now standing at the door to see them off.
“Yishu, don’t be nervous. Auntie believes in you; you can definitely do it!”
“Good luck, Yishu. Grandma thinks you’ve got this too.”
“And me, and me! Sister Yishu’s Mandarin is so good, there won’t be any problem!”
Though they were cheering her on, the three of them clearly looked more nervous than the candidate herself.
Lin Yishu tried her best to relax her stiff expression, smiling to reassure them. “It’s fine, I’m not nervous at all.”
Despite her words, she was actually quite anxious deep down. After all, she had never held a job or experienced an interview like this. Although Li Yan had given her plenty of advice the night before, it was still her first time facing it.
Sensing her tension, Li Yan suddenly stopped as they reached the gates of the slaughterhouse.
Lin Yishu looked at her, puzzled.
Li Yan flashed her a bright smile and said, “Lin Yishu, give me your hand.”
Though confused, Lin Yishu obediently reached out. Her gaze followed Li Yan’s movements.
Li Yan grasped Lin Yishu’s fingertips with both hands, then slowly moved her grip up along the joints. The thin calluses on Li Yan’s palms brushed lightly against her fingers before stopping at the center of her palm, where Li Yan gave a gentle squeeze.
Lin Yishu felt a strange, tingling numbness sprout from her palm. Before she could process the feeling, the calloused hands retreated to her fingertips and gently folded her fingers into a fist.
“I’ve passed my luck on to you. You’re definitely going to land that broadcaster position today!”
Lin Yishu looked up into a radiant, smiling face.
Strangely, the heart that had been racing at the sight of the slaughterhouse gates suddenly calmed down. She crinkled her eyes and nodded. “Okay.”
Despite her brave words at the gate, Li Yan was actually more nervous than anyone.
Especially when nearly an hour passed and Lin Yishu still hadn’t come out, her heart began to thump like a drum.
What’s going on? Who spends this much time in an interview?
But she quickly comforted herself. A long interview means there’s hope. Otherwise, they would have kicked her out after two minutes, right?
She worked half-heartedly, staring out the workshop window at the office opposite. The broadcaster position wasn’t decided by Qi Haisheng alone, today’s interview included him and other factory leaders.
Li Yan’s attention was so focused on the office that she didn’t even notice Chen Aihua approaching.
Chen Aihua glanced at the mangled meat under Li Yan’s knife, poked her head out the window to see what she was looking at, and teased, “Li Yan, those pieces won’t pass quality control. Careful, or the higher-ups will make you buy them yourself!”
Li Yan jumped, startled. Coming back to her senses, she realized the meat in her hand was shredded beyond recognition and quickly set down her knife.
“What are you looking at? You’ve been distracted this whole time. What’s out there?” Chen Aihua had never seen her make such a blunder at work, so she was incredibly curious.
She pressed her head against the glass for a long time but couldn’t see anything worth noting. Her curiosity only grew.
Li Yan withdrew her gaze and feigned innocence. “Nothing.”
However, terrified she might miss the exact moment Lin Yishu emerged, she continued to steal glances out of the corner of her eye.
Chen Aihua caught these little movements and grew even more skeptical, keeping her head glued to the window. “You’re definitely hiding something. I’m going to find out today, just you watch.”
Li Yan looked at the ceiling in exasperation. Of all the people to get caught by… now it’s going to be hard to dodge this.
Just as she was trying to think of an excuse to send Chen Aihua away, the office door finally opened. Someone bowed slightly to those inside and stepped out.
It was Lin Yishu!
Lin Yishu had a smile on her face and a light spring in her step. Li Yan knew instantly, she got the job!
She immediately pressed against the window and waved.
Beside her, Chen Aihua suddenly let out a shriek. “A fairy! Oh my god, oh my grandma, I see a fairy!”
Seeing them, Lin Yishu’s lips curved into a smile as she walked toward them.
Chen Aihua got even more excited, her eyes practically flying through the glass. “The fairy is walking toward me!”
As Lin Yishu drew closer, Chen Aihua began babbling incoherently. “My goodness, when did our factory get such a fairy? How did I not hear about this? That’s impossible, someone looking like that, I should have gone to see her the first day she reported for duty. I couldn’t have missed her…”
Li Yan covered her ringing ears, interrupting helplessly. “Is it possible that today is her first day reporting in?”
Chen Aihua didn’t hear her, her attention was entirely captured by the person outside.
Walking in the sunlight, Lin Yishu seemed bathed in a glow, even her hair appearing golden. As she approached, she looked like a celestial being descending to earth.
Chen Aihua watched wide-eyed as the “fairy” walked up, squinted her eyes into crescents, and waved at her.
Chen Aihua’s brain went numb, but her hand instinctively waved back.
The fairy seemed amused by her and suddenly covered her mouth, laughing.
Before Chen Aihua could react to the laughter, the person beside her dashed out like a gust of wind.
Then, she saw her best friend standing next to the fairy, the two of them chatting happily.
Chen Aihua: !!!
Wait, so Li Yan knows this fairy? And they were the ones waving at each other just now?!
Chen Aihua felt a bit embarrassed, but the thought that her best friend knew her meant she could get to know her too. She was so happy she just wanted to giggle like a fool.
Outside the window, Li Yan ran out. Although she had already guessed the outcome, she asked for confirmation, “Did you get it?”
Lin Yishu felt a level of happiness she hadn’t experienced in twenty years. All the gloom in her chest had vanished, replaced by a feeling that she could embrace the whole world.
“I got it,” she said softly.
To her, this wasn’t just a job, it was recognition, a proof of her integration here. It meant she had truly shed her past and gained a brand-new beginning. Her future held infinite possibilities.
More importantly, her future was now one step closer to Li Yan. How could she not be happy?
The heavy stone in Li Yan’s heart finally dropped. She was so excited she started pacing in place.
A moment later, she suddenly felt the warmth of the other person’s body.
Lin Yishu gently embraced her, her voice falling softly and firmly by her ear. “Li Yan, thank you. Thank you so much.”
Li Yan’s body went stiff.
A thought flickered through her mind, but before she could catch it, she was interrupted by Chen Aihua, who had come rushing out.
“Li… Li Yan, who is this? Someone you know? Are they also from the factory? How come I haven’t seen her before? Why don’t you introduce us…”
Chen Aihua rubbed her hands together, looking a bit shy.
Li Yan hadn’t expected her to follow them out. Startled, she immediately pulled away from Lin Yishu, her eyes darting around nervously.
“Hello, I’m Lin Yishu. I’m Li Yan’s… friend. Today is my first day reporting to the factory,” the person beside her introduced herself with perfect composure.
Li Yan’s racing heart gradually began to cool down.
Even though it was the other person who had initiated the hug, she was the only one flustered.
Chen Aihua was flattered that the fairy had introduced herself first. She quickly shook her hand. “Hello, hello! I’m Chen Aihua, also Li Yan’s best friend!”
After saying this, she seemed a bit bashful, glancing at Lin Yishu several times before adding, “Can I be your friend too?”
Lin Yishu let the words “best friend” slide through her mind, her eyes crinkling a moment later. “Of course. Since you’re Li Yan’s friend, you’re my friend too.”
Chen Aihua didn’t notice anything unusual about the phrasing, lost in her own silly joy.
Oh man, such a beautiful fairy said she’s willing to be my friend! Heavens, heavens, heavens!
Watching from the side, Li Yan suddenly felt a bit disgruntled.
