- Chapter 30 - How Many Times?
Li Yan quickly changed her clothes. When she stepped off the kang (heated brick bed), she noticed Lin Yishu’s face looked a bit flushed. Realizing something instantly, she stammered, “Your face is so red.”
She didn’t dare look the other person in the eye, yet she couldn’t help stealing glances to see her reaction.
Lin Yishu clearly hadn’t seen anything, so… could she have made herself blush just by imagining things?
Li Yan’s head buzzed, her own face began to heat up as well.
That’s such a lecherous thought.
Lin Yishu didn’t seem like that kind of person. It must be because Li Yan herself had read too many diverse books.
Li Yan shook her head vigorously, casting the “filth” out of her mind. She offered an excuse to cover her tracks: “The kang must be too hot today, right? It’s probably because of Chinese New Year. Grandma must have secretly added extra firewood behind my mom’s back.”
Lin Yishu, just as she expected, nodded quite frankly. Then, she looked Li Yan up and down and praised, “It looks great. This sweater really suits you. I have excellent taste.”
Li Yan couldn’t help but chuckle.
She thought Lin Yishu was praising her, but in the end, the compliment circled back to Lin Yishu’s own eye for fashion.
After finishing breakfast, the two informed the family and prepared to head out. Before leaving, Li Yan thought for a moment and tucked the movie tickets into her pocket.
It was a beautiful sunny day. The winter sun was warm and gentle, instead of scorching, it seemed to swirl away the stagnant chill of the air, leaving one feeling warm from head to toe.
They walked at a leisurely pace. Halfway there, Lin Yishu unwrapped her scarf and handed it over. Li Yan reflexively took it and draped it over her arm.
Seeing that Lin Yishu was still carrying a satchel, Li Yan stopped and reached out. “Give me the bag, too.”
Lin Yishu didn’t refuse and handed it over directly.
Li Yan took it, finding it heavier than she expected. Curious, she asked, “What do you have in here? Why is it so heavy?”
Lin Yishu opened the bag to show her.
Aside from a “water turtle” (a hot water bottle), the rest was candy, colorful, assorted candies of every kind.
Li Yan looked on, feeling a bit helpless.
She had only found out later that Lin Yishu was incredibly fond of sweets. Among the parcels sent to her, there were at least dozens of candy coupons. During the few days Li Yan was away before the New Year, Lin Yishu and A-Can would go to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy candy whenever they could. Now, there was candy hidden in every cupboard at home.
Seeming to sense Li Yan’s helplessness, Lin Yishu’s eyes curved into crescents as she squinted at her.
“What? I want to eat something sweet,” the girl said, peeling an orange-flavored candy and popping it into her mouth. Her voice took on a sweet, mellow tone.
Li Yan had no way to argue with her. Besides, the candy wasn’t that heavy, the weight mostly came from the hot water bottle.
“I thought it would be cold on the road, so I brought it thinking it could warm our hands. Who knew today would be so mild?” Lin Yishu explained, noticing Li Yan looking at the water bottle.
Li Yan replied, “It’s fine. It might be cold when we return in the evening, so it could still come in handy.”
Lin Yishu was curious. “Evening? Does seeing a doctor take that long? It shouldn’t, right? Let’s come back early. I want to go out and play with A-Can.”
Li Yan squeezed the movie tickets in her hand and said vaguely, “It might take a bit of effort, hard to say.”
Lin Yishu didn’t speak further, and Li Yan fell silent as well.
She was thinking, perhaps now was the perfect time to invite her to the movies?
She opened her mouth, ready to say something, when something was suddenly stuffed into her mouth.
It was strikingly sweet, with a superficial fruity aroma. To Li Yan, it tasted a bit cheap, but to Lin Yishu and Li Can, it was a favorite.
It was a peach-flavored fruit candy.
Lin Yishu held her hand up, looking at her with round, sparkling apricot eyes and a smile, as if she were sharing her most precious treasure and hoping Li Yan would love it just as much.
Facing those eyes, Li Yan found it impossible to say anything discouraging, so she extended her tongue to roll the candy into her mouth.
As she pulled her tongue back, she accidentally brushed against something warm.
The smiling eyes in front of her suddenly widened, like a startled rabbit.
Li Yan hurriedly took two steps back to create some distance.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to,” she said quickly.
Lin Yishu hid her hand behind her back, her fingers curling tight. Her mind involuntarily flashed back to yesterday morning.
The warm, moist tongue moving between her fingers, licking or nipping, drawing out traces of silver.
The tips of Lin Yishu’s ears instantly turned blood-red.
Thankfully, Li Yan doesn’t remember.
“It’s fine,” she whispered, forcing the thoughts out of her head.
Both had secrets they couldn’t voice, so the scene fell quiet, save for the sound of their footsteps.
Li Yan’s invitation never made it out of her mouth. She figured she would just wait until they finished at the hospital, there would be time to ask then.
After that little episode, they unconsciously picked up their pace and soon arrived at the hospital entrance.
The Slaughterhouse Hospital had originally been built with funds from the nearby cannery and ice factory, so it was larger than typical factory clinics and had more equipment. Since one hospital served three factories, there were staff on duty even on New Year’s Day.
Once inside, Li Yan and Lin Yishu went straight to the outpatient desk and asked a nurse, “Hello, is Dr. Xu Xinlan in today?”
Li Yan figured that since Dr. Xu was an Omega, it would save a lot of trouble to see her directly. If she wasn’t there, they’d have to find someone else. Since there was one Omega doctor here, there were likely others who had presented as second genders as well.
Their luck was good. The nurse pointed to a room. “Dr. Xu is in Outpatient Room 4. Get a registration number first, then wait by the door.”
After registering, they followed the instructions. Just as the door opened and before they could enter, the person inside wearing a mask glanced out. Her eyes lit up slightly. “It’s you two?”
Li Yan didn’t expect her to remember them. She walked in and closed the door, scratching her head sheepishly. “Dr. Xu, you actually remember us. Sorry to bother you again.”
Though her face was hidden by the mask, the smile in Xu Xinlan’s voice was clear. “I can’t help it. I’ve seen plenty of Alphas and Omegas who don’t understand heat cycles, but you two are the first ones to buy the hospital bedsheets and take them home. It’s hard not to remember.”
Li Yan’s face suddenly burned hot.
“Dr. Xu… you have a really great memory…” she stammered nonsensically.
Xu Xinlan burst out laughing.
Just as she was about to say more, another voice spoke up.
“It wasn’t a heat cycle last time. You misdiagnosed me.”
Xu Xinlan turned her head toward the voice and saw the Omega standing there, staring at her coldly.
Lin Yishu didn’t know what had come over her, but seeing the two of them chatting so comfortably made her feel a sudden tightness in her chest. She shouldn’t have said it, but she couldn’t hold it back, so she just spoke bluntly.
Xu Xinlan’s gaze shifted between the sensitive Omega and the somewhat dazed looking Alpha. After a moment, she said in surprise, “Not a heat cycle? So you didn’t mark each other last time?”
Though she had only realized it later herself, Li Yan nodded honestly. “No.”
Xu Xinlan was even more shocked. “Then why did you buy the hospital bedsheets?”
Li Yan: “…”
How could she explain? She had bought the sheets because she had accidentally licked Lin Yishu’s hand, and the other girl had been upset and wiped her hand on the sheets. Li Yan felt guilty, so she bought the sheets to dispose of them.
There really wasn’t any other “strange” reason.
Seeing the doctor’s gaze getting weirder and weirder, Li Yan immediately cut her off and changed the subject. “Dr. Xu, we came today to ask you…”
Xu Xinlan reined in her gossiping curiosity and coughed twice, sitting up straight. “Mhm, go ahead. Are you here for a specific ailment today?”
Li Yan stalled.
Words that hadn’t felt strange before now felt incredibly embarrassing to say after that bizarre exchange.
The person beside her, however, decisively brushed her hair aside, turned around, and spoke naturally: “After being marked last night, my gland is a bit swollen. Dr. Xu, could you prescribe something to reduce the swelling?”
She said it directly, as casually as if she were talking about the weather.
Li Yan felt a strange mix of secret joy and a lingering ache in her heart.
Xu Xinlan’s suppressed gossip meter spiked again. She stood up to examine the Omega’s gland while her eyes darted between the two of them. “Oh? You didn’t mark last time, but you did yesterday? How many days has it been?”
Li Yan wanted to bury her head in the floor.
Indeed, the interval wasn’t long at all. And this time, if it hadn’t been for her, they wouldn’t have reached this point. Lin Yishu did it to help her…
When Xu Xinlan saw the Omega’s gland, she let out a sharp hiss.
“Why is it so swollen? How many times did you do it yesterday?” she couldn’t help but ask.
Li Yan felt like she had lost control of her face.
How… many… times…
What an incredibly suggestive question…
Lin Yishu was actually quite embarrassed as well, but she maintained her composure. “Only once.”
Xu Xinlan’s voice rose. “That intense for just one time?”
Realizing her tone was a bit unprofessional, she coughed again to cover it up. “Cough, I mean, perhaps because it was your first time, you were a bit reckless. You should try to exercise more restraint in the future. An Omega’s gland is delicate and fragile once damaged, it can be irreversible. No matter how difficult it gets, the Alpha must work to control their desires. Be gentle and don’t be greedy with the frequency. Understand?”
Li Yan nodded obediently and repeatedly.
She had truly learned her lesson. Even if she wasn’t fully conscious, she would find a way to stay lucid. She couldn’t let Lin Yishu hurt like that again.
Xu Xinlan examined it carefully and then looked away. “It’s not a huge problem, just quite swollen. I’ll prescribe some ointment. Apply it for two days and you’ll be fine. Don’t worry.”
Hearing this, Li Yan finally felt relieved. She took the prescription, went out to pay, and collected the medicine from the pharmacy. Then, clutching the ointment, she returned to the outpatient room.
Seeing her return, Xu Xinlan stood up. “You two come with me. The gland is very swollen, it’s best to apply the first dose now. It should feel much better by the afternoon.”
The two followed her to a familiar room. Xu Xinlan opened the door and gestured for them to enter.
Then, she and Li Yan stared at each other.
After a few seconds, she said, “Why are you looking at me? Do you want me to help apply the medicine? Applying medicine to a place as private as a gland should, of course, be done by oneself or one’s partner.”
Partner…
That word echoed repeatedly in Li Yan’s mind, she didn’t hear a word of anything else.
The door was closed, only to be pulled open again a moment later.
Xu Xinlan gave them a meaningful look. “Don’t go thinking about buying our hospital bedsheets again this time.”
