- Chapter 15 - Little Bear, My Arm Actually Isn't That Bad Either
Li Yan and Lin Yishu returned home. To their surprise, Li Chunmei and Xu Xiufen hadn’t gone to work, and even Li Can was staying put at home instead of running off.
Before Li Yan could even ask what was going on, the three of them rushed forward. “How is it? Is Yishu okay? You two being at the hospital all night worried us sick. How are you feeling, Yishu? Are you still uncomfortable?”
Li Can added, “Sister Yishu’s face isn’t red anymore, so she should be fine, right?”
Looking at their concerned faces, Lin Yishu’s expression softened significantly. She shook her head and said, “I’m fine now. Sorry for making everyone worry.”
Li Chunmei patted her chest in relief. “It’s good that you’re okay. You gave me a real fright yesterday. That fever was so high. I’ve never seen anyone burn up like that…”
She paused to pinch her younger daughter. “You silly girl, you’re old enough to know better! You should have called us sooner. Letting Yishu burn up all afternoon… if something serious had happened, could you have taken responsibility?”
Li Can’s arm hurt, but knowing she was in the wrong, she didn’t dare cry out. She just lowered her head guiltily.
Lin Yishu quickly stepped in to defend her. “Auntie, it’s not A-Can’s fault. It’s just my own physical constitution.”
Li Yan couldn’t find a gap to speak, but as she listened, she began to feel restless. Thinking back to the events of the previous night, she suddenly jerked her head away, not daring to let her gaze wander toward Lin Yishu.
Li Chunmei, sharp-eyed as ever, noticed the movement. “Yanyan, what’s wrong with your face? Child, you didn’t catch a cold too, did you? I thought you looked off when you left yesterday morning. Quick, come to the room with me, I’ll get the thermometer…”
Oh, mother of mine, you’re just making things worse, Li Yan wailed internally.
She quickly protested, “I’m fine, Mom! Don’t worry, your daughter is as strong as an ox. I’m in great health!”
Afraid her mother would harp on the subject, she scrambled to change the topic: “Mom, Grandma, why aren’t you guys at work today?”
Li Chunmei gave her a look. “It snowed again last night! With the snow this thick, how can anyone work? It’s freezing out there!”
Li Yan felt sheepish. Had it snowed again last night? She hadn’t noticed the snow being any deeper on the way back.
Right… Today, Lin Yishu had been pulling the cart with her. Her attention had been entirely elsewhere; how could she have noticed the snow on the ground?
“By the way, I heard people from the military are coming to the village. Yanyan, did you see anyone when you were coming back? Are they here yet?” Xu Xiufen asked, pulling her granddaughter aside after the initial chatter died down.
“Not yet, but there’s a crowd waiting at the village entrance…” Li Yan answered her grandmother, but her eyes were trailing after the person walking away with her mother.
Li Chunmei seemed to have something private to say to Lin Yishu, as she led her directly into the inner room.
Inside, Lin Yishu watched with confusion as Li Chunmei climbed onto the kang bed and pulled a familiar-looking bundle from the cabinet. Her eyes instantly lit up.
“Yishu, this package was delivered by the postman yesterday. He said it’s for you. I checked carefully, and it’s your name, not a single character off. Since it’s quite large and the village is full of wagging tongues, I tucked it away for you first. Want to take a look?”
“It’s mine,” Lin Yishu said, stepping forward immediately to open it.
She hadn’t expected it to actually arrive here!
To avoid drawing attention back then, she hadn’t dared to pack large bundles and used ordinary cloth for wrapping. However, she had made marks, several tiny leaves drawn on the outside. The number of leaves indicated which package it was.
Lin Yishu looked at the two small leaves on the grey cloth.
This was the second package she had sent, mailed right after she had escaped and reached the neighboring city.
At the time, she had hoped that even if only one package arrived, it would be enough. She had divided her belongings more or less equally: each contained a few clothes, daily necessities, some money, and coupons. The difference was that this package contained something she couldn’t bear to be without, her “mental support” little brown bear.
Lin Yishu was almost trembling with excitement as she pulled the intact bear into her arms, nuzzling it affectionately.
When Li Yan opened the door and walked in, this was the scene she witnessed.
Li Chunmei’s question came right on cue: “This is…?”
Hearing the voice, Lin Yishu suddenly remembered there was someone else in the room. Realizing she had lost her composure, she lowered her head in embarrassment, yet she couldn’t stop herself from focusing on the item in her hands.
She poked and stroked it, answering with a smile, “This is my best friend. With her here, I can sleep soundly at night.”
Li Yan, who was about to step inside, immediately retracted her foot.
Fine then. Now that your ‘A-Beibei’ is back, you’re turning your back on me.
What a heartless, ungrateful Omega!
After receiving the package, the first thing Lin Yishu did was take several bills and coupons out of an envelope and hand them to Li Chunmei. “Auntie, please take these. Consider it my room and board for staying here. It’s not much, but I’ll give you more once I have more money later.”
Li Chunmei stared at the stack of “Great Unity” bills and the jumble of coupons. Her mouth fell open as she waved her hands dismissively. “No, no, I can’t take this! It’s just one more person on the bed and one more pair of chopsticks! Besides, you don’t eat much, and you help with the chores. If you hadn’t gone out in the cold to gather firewood for us yesterday, you wouldn’t have caught that fever. We didn’t take good enough care of you; I can’t take your money.”
Lin Yishu insisted on placing the money and coupons into her hands. Touching her new cotton coat and looking at the new shoes on her feet, she whispered, “I’m very warm… both in my body… and my heart.”
Li Chunmei didn’t catch the last part, and just as she was about to ask, Li Yan walked in. She said to her mother, “Mom, just take it. Otherwise, she won’t feel right about staying.”
Li Chunmei thought for a moment, then stuffed most of it back to Lin Yishu, keeping only one “Great Unity” bill, two cloth coupons, and a thirty-jin grain coupon. “Then I’ll take these. You keep the rest for yourself.”
She could tell that Yishu came from a wealthy background, but the girl’s circumstances were heartbreaking. It was better for her to keep some savings as a backup plan for the future.
Both sides compromised, and they finally reached an agreement.
Worried that the two hadn’t rested well the night before, Li Chunmei tucked the money away and left the room.
Only the two of them remained.
Li Yan’s gaze drifted aimlessly before landing on the little brown bear lying flat on the kang.
She cleared her throat. “That bear is pretty cute.”
Lin Yishu didn’t respond.
“Must have been expensive?”
Lin Yishu remained indifferent.
Li Yan persisted. “It looks fluffy. It must feel really nice to touch.”
Lin Yishu finally spared her a glance. “What exactly are you trying to say?”
My arm actually isn’t that bad either.
As soon as this ridiculous thought surfaced, Li Yan felt she must have gone insane.
Her eyes darted around, not daring to meet the other’s gaze. She turned and fled the room in a panic.
She left Lin Yishu standing there, completely baffled.
What is wrong with her today? Why is she being so weird?
