- Chapter 9 - Injured. Familiar School Uniform, Familiar Face
Having received advance notice, Class 3’s homeroom teacher, Liu Yingjie, had been waiting for the new student for quite a while. The moment Shen Ying arrived in her office, she brought up his academic performance, as well as the progress of his previous school’s curriculum.
Grade 11 and Grade 12 at Yinan No. 1 High started the school year earlier than other schools in the city. Grade 11 began in early August, whereas at Linbei No. 3 High, Grade 11 didn’t start until late August.
Originally, the curriculum progress at Linbei No. 3 High was already much slower than at Yinan No. 1 High. Now, coupled with a gap of nearly half a month’s worth of coursework, the extent to which Shen Ying fell behind the new class was indeed not something to be taken lightly.
Shen Ying listened attentively to Liu Yingjie’s concise analysis and advice, his attitude exceedingly earnest. “Alright, thank you, Teacher. I’ll find a way to catch up with the lessons as soon as possible.”
“If there’s anything you don’t understand, feel free to drop by the office to ask the subject teachers; don’t try to figure everything out behind closed doors.” Seeing how receptive he was, Liu Yingjie smiled. “As long as you’re willing to learn, none of the subject teachers will hesitate to teach you. When I received the notification from the grade director, I also took the time to get a detailed understanding of your academic situation from him beforehand. So, I still have high expectations for you.”
“Thank you, Teacher.”
“These are the textbooks for this semester, along with some exercise books—everyone in the class gets a set.” Liu Yingjie pulled up a heavy, thick canvas bag from under her desk. “You can take it with you to the classroom later.”
“Okay…”
Ding—
Before Shen Ying could finish speaking, the phone in his pocket let out a very insensitive chime.
Since there weren’t many teachers in the office, the noise was particularly noticeable.
“Did you bring a phone with you?” Having naturally heard it, Liu Yingjie asked him.
Shen Ying: “…”
He hadn’t slept well last night and had completely forgotten to mute his phone beforehand.
“Considering today is your first day after transferring, I won’t confiscate your phone today. But starting tomorrow, you’re not allowed to bring a phone to school, understood?” Liu Yingjie was clearly used to handling disciplinary issues like this, her expression unruffled.
Who would have guessed that the transfer student—who had maintained a stellar attitude ever since walking through the door—turned out to be rather reluctant upon hearing that he couldn’t bring his phone.
“What? Not willing?” Liu Yingjie’s tone turned more stern.
Shen Ying stood there hesitating for a few seconds before shaking his head to reason with the teacher. “Teacher, could I please bring my phone for just one month? My grandfather just finished his surgery and is in the hospital. There’s no one else at home, and normally only a caregiver looks after him at the hospital. I’m worried that if something comes up while I’m at school, he won’t be able to reach me. Don’t worry, Teacher—besides staying in touch with my grandfather, I won’t use the phone for anything else at school.”
Stunned by his explanation, Liu Yingjie paused for a moment before nodding. “Alright, I understand. You can keep your phone with you until your grandfather is discharged. However, it must be kept on silent. Even though you have a valid reason and your classmates won’t mind if they know your situation, it’s still best not to let too many people know.”
“Alright, Teacher. I understand, thank you for your understanding.”
“In the future, whether it’s regarding your studies or life difficulties, you can always come to me first.” After speaking, Liu Yingjie’s sharp eyes caught sight of someone passing by outside the office, and she immediately called out to stop him. “Go to my class and call two boys over. I saw Zhao Lingfan coming upstairs just now, so just call him, and tell him to grab another boy at random to lend a hand with moving the new student’s desk and chair.”
“Got it!” The boy, who had originally been sneaking around, answered excitedly upon hearing this and sprinted away quickly.
Shen Ying could only catch a blur of his silhouette.
“There’s no need to trouble them, Teacher. I can do it myself,” Shen Ying said, turning back to Liu Yingjie.
“It’s fine, those brats in class have boundless energy every day; they’re more than happy to do it,” Liu Yingjie said. “The classroom isn’t right next door. Having someone lend a hand will be faster, and you can also take this opportunity to get familiarized with them.”
Since the teacher put it that way, Shen Ying refrained from declining further and stood quietly waiting for them to arrive.
Looking at his face, Liu Yingjie also took advantage of this break to ask, “What’s the deal with the injury on your face? Did you get into a fight with someone?”
“No, I just bumped into something accidentally.” Shen Ying’s eyes flickered slightly, answering very quickly.
“…” What kind of person was Liu Yingjie? Having taught for over a decade, there was no way she would believe his clumsy excuse. “I know kids your age are like this, but from now on, at Yinan No. 1 High, as my student, no matter who you get into a conflict with, you are not allowed to fight. Come find me first thing, understand?”
“…Understood, Teacher.” Shen Ying lowered his eyes slightly, answering in a soft voice.
In fact, he had never imagined that his first day at Yinan No. 1 High would involve being injured.
At the thought of this, he inexplicably recalled Jiang Shi.
He wondered if Jiang Shi had arrived at school yet. If Jiang Shi saw the injury on his face, would he start thinking he was a troublemaker?
Shen Ying actually knew that the excuse he had used in front of Brother Lin and his new homeroom teacher was incredibly stupid.
The boy called by Liu Yingjie outside the office didn’t take long; soon, two boys appeared at the door, pushing and shoving each other.
Walking in front, Zhao Lingfan instantly stood up straight the moment he met the homeroom teacher’s sharp gaze. “Reporting, Teacher! We’re here to help.”
After speaking, his gaze quietly shifted to the boy standing next to the homeroom teacher’s desk—he was quite tall and possessed a handsome face that girls at school would definitely love looking at. Moreover, just as Dahuang had said, his face was injured, covering a fairly large area.
Because he was a brand-new transfer student, he hadn’t received a school uniform yet. He was wearing simple casual clothes—a white T-shirt with an open white button-down shirt—yet he looked like a walking clothing model.
Of course, as a guy himself, Zhao Lingfan had actually noticed the limited-edition running shoes on Shen Ying’s feet first. Envious as he was, he took a closer look at his outfit and discovered that the new classmate was decked out in high-end goods, and the watch on his wrist was also a limited edition.
No wonder he was able to transfer to Yinan No. 1 High at this crucial juncture.
“This is Shen Ying. He’ll be taking classes with you from now on. These two classmates are Zhao Lingfan and Huang Heng.” Liu Yingjie gave a brief mutual introduction, wasting no time. “There’s a new set of desk and chair here. You two help Shen Ying move them, and then take him to the classroom first. I’ll make a phone call and be there shortly.”
“Sure.”
Zhao Lingfan and Huang Heng had no objections and immediately set to work helping the new classmate move the desk and chair, not forgetting to steal a couple more glances at him before lifting.
“By the way, Shen Ying, are you nearsighted?” Liu Yingjie asked suddenly as Shen Ying picked up the canvas bag filled with textbooks and exercise books.
Shen Ying: “No.”
“Since you’re tall, should they put your desk and chair at the back of the classroom for now? You see, there really aren’t many in class as tall as you. Of course, we can adjust your seat later depending on the situation.”
“It’s fine, sitting in the back row works for me.”
Once the position was discussed and confirmed, Shen Ying followed Zhao Lingfan and Dahuang out.
He didn’t know what material the desks and chairs at Yinan No. 1 High were made of—they looked brand new but appeared thick and heavy. The chair looked fine due to its smaller size, but following behind them, Shen Ying felt that the taller boy carrying his desk seemed to be struggling a bit, whether due to its bulk or sheer weight.
“How about I carry the desk myself?” Shen Ying offered to them.
Hearing his voice, the two in front paused. Zhao Lingfan looked back at him, then lowered his gaze to the canvas bag in Shen Ying’s hand, saying leisurely, “No need. The desks at our school might be a bit heavy, but they definitely aren’t heavier than the ocean of knowledge.”
“…………?”
“Zhao Lingfan, you’re ridiculous!” Huang Heng was clearly amused by his comment, his back shaking with laughter.
Shen Ying: “…”
Turns out students at Yinan No. 1 High aren’t much different from students at regular schools; they’re full of nonsensical quips too.
The homeroom teacher said the classroom wasn’t next door, but it wasn’t too far either—just five classrooms away.
The corridor along the way was filled with students continuously arriving at school. Everyone’s miserable Monday state of mind instantly brightened up the moment Shen Ying appeared; without exception, their curious eyes closely followed his figure.
Along the way, Shen Ying felt a bit like a monkey in a zoo being put on display for visitors. However, his mind was occupied with other matters, leaving him no spare energy to care about those gazes.
Upon arriving at Class 3, Shen Ying followed Zhao Lingfan and Huang Heng in through the back door.
“He’s here, he’s here!”
Before Shen Ying could even step into the classroom, he heard a shout from inside.
He saw almost all the heads in the classroom huddled together at the moment; there were even a few classmates who hadn’t even had time to put down their backpacks, crowding around to join in the excitement.
“Um… Shen Ying?” Zhao Lingfan looked at Shen Ying and pointed to the spot in front of them. “Our class’s back row only has one single spot. Which group’s back would you like to sit behind?”
In fact, Shen Ying didn’t need to wait for him to speak. The moment he stepped through the door, he had already noticed the isolated spot in the back row of the classroom—the desk and chair were placed right between the ends of Group 1 and Group 2, making it particularly conspicuous.
Shen Ying’s gaze inexplicably glued itself to that spot. By the time he regained his senses, he realized Zhao Lingfan and Huang Heng were waiting for him to speak, so he immediately pointed to the back of Group 3 and said, “Right here is fine. Thanks.”
“No big deal.” Hearing his thanks, Zhao Lingfan replied with a smile, but after putting the desk down, he suddenly raised his head with a tone of suggestion. “How about you put it between Group 3 and Group 4 instead? That way it looks symmetrical. What… do you think?”
Shen Ying noticed that before Zhao Lingfan made the suggestion, he had very conspicuously glanced at the only isolated spot in the classroom. Hesitating for two seconds, Shen Ying nodded and said that was fine.
After helping the new classmate settle his desk and chair, Zhao Lingfan sat back in his own seat—his seat was at the very back of Group 2, right in front and to the left of that isolated spot.
Seeing that everyone in the class was still craning their necks to observe the new classmate, Zhao Lingfan took the initiative to remind them that the homeroom teacher would be over shortly. Only then did they immediately sit up straight.
After sitting down, Shen Ying took out the books from his canvas bag one by one, completely turning a blind eye to all the stares. After organizing his things unhurriedly, he glanced over at the symmetrical spot next to him—the tabletop was clean, and a few books were placed in the storage compartment beneath the desk.
The homeroom teacher, Liu Yingjie, appeared at the back door holding her lesson plans, followed by several students behind her.
“What are you looking at? Hurry up and sit properly in your seats,” Liu Yingjie urged sternly upon seeing the students behind her staring at the new classmate as if they were rooted to the spot.
Walking slowly up to the podium, Liu Yingjie looked at the kids below as if she was helpless against them. “Once everyone is here, I will properly introduce our class’s new student. Those who should read, read; those who should eat breakfast, eat breakfast. Focus more of your energy on your studies.”
The moment these words came out, the students in the class, especially the boys, started making noises of playful uproar.
“Quiet! Do you want to be punished by copying texts again?” Liu Yingjie glared sternly down at the class.
After waiting for a short while, several hurried footsteps echoed outside the classroom door, followed by a cluster of students jostling to enter one after another.
Listening to the background noise of the homeroom teacher telling them to act more mature, Shen Ying casually looked toward the back door, stranger’s faces flashing past his eyes one after another.
Until a familiar face entered his vision, Shen Ying’s calm eyes lit up in an instant.
Coincidentally, the morning sunlight spilled outside, streaming through the window and into the classroom, giving Shen Ying the chance to see him even more clearly.
The familiar school uniform, the familiar face—it completely overlapped with the boy he had met at the internet cafe that day.
At this very moment, Shen Ying finally felt the reality of the fact that Jiang Shi was indeed that boy from the internet cafe.
Entering the room, Jiang Shi also seemed to be looking for him. Shen Ying saw his gaze quickly and accurately fixate on him.
With bright eyes and a joyful expression, Shen Ying flashed a smile at Jiang Shi.
