- Chapter 23 - The Black Mist Maze — Lethal Werewolf Game (Part 4)
Chen Yiyi clearly had not expected You Yan to speak so suddenly. Startled, her body shuddered involuntarily. However, when she noticed that none of the people around them reacted, she realized that only the Werewolves could hear each other.
This was a rule of the game a compulsory one.
Those whose turns had not yet come could only exist in absolute silence. They could not open their eyes, they could not speak, and they could not hear. This kind of isolation infinitely magnified a person’s inner fear and panic, forcing them to endure a form of mental torture alone.
“Werewolves, please choose your target,” the man in the crow mask instructed.
Without a shred of hesitation, You Yan pointed directly at Pei Baiyang, who sat across from him.
The 187-centimeter-tall man kept his eyes closed. The moonlight reflected off his gold-rimmed glasses, and a faint, ambiguous smile played at the corners of his lips. You Yan felt that this man did not look like an ordinary office worker.
Chen Yiyi’s eyes widened as she shook her head, pointing instead at Lin Xiaoyu, who appeared to be the most harmless person present.
You Yan let out a cold sneer and pointed back at Pei Baiyang once more.
The moment the voting concluded, Lin Xiaoyu suddenly squirmed in her seat. You Yan narrowed his eyes; this “Witch” might have already sensed something.
“Werewolves, please close your eyes. Seer, please open your eyes.”
In the darkness, You Yan felt a gaze sweep across his face, and his earring grew even hotter.
“Please select the identity card you wish to inspect.”
The player acting as the Seer opened their eyes and pointed at someone.
“Seer, please close your eyes. Witch, please open your eyes.”
“The person who died tonight is him.” The crow-masked man pointed at Pei Baiyang. “Do you wish to use your antidote? Do you wish to use your poison?”
After a prolonged silence, the Witch’s voice rang out, as faint as the buzz of a mosquito. “I will use… the antidote.”
“Dawn has broken.”
Everyone opened their eyes.
The crow-masked man announced, “It was a peaceful night.”
“Oh?” Pei Baiyang pushed his glasses up, his gaze sweeping across everyone’s faces. “It seems we have a very dutiful Witch among us.”
Lin Xiaoyu timidly raised her hand. “It… it was me who used the antidote.” She bit her lower lip, her large eyes flickering with anxiety. “I… I felt like we should save whoever was targeted on the first night…”
“Foolish,” Zhang Wei snorted coldly. His massive 193-centimeter frame loomed like a small mountain, radiating a heavy sense of oppression. “The Witch’s antidote should be saved to protect the Seer.”
You Yan stroked the scalpel hidden inside his lab coat, lost in thought.
Looking at Lin Xiaoyu’s demeanor, she might truly be the Witch. Using the antidote on the very first night seemed like a novice mistake on the surface. In reality, it wasn’t a terrible move. Choosing to save someone on the first night even if it meant risking saving the wrong person was a viable strategy, considering the Seer had a one-in-seven chance of being targeted by the Werewolves immediately. If the Seer truly died on the first night, the subsequent game would become an uphill battle for the good faction.
Liu Xin pushed his thick glasses up, the eyes behind the lenses gleaming with shrewdness. “Since the Witch has already revealed herself, I will lead the team from here on out. I am the Seer, and last night, I verified You Yan’s identity.”
Everyone’s gaze instantly shifted to You Yan, who was leaning against the corner of the wall.
He Yanqing suddenly let out a soft laugh, his moonlight-blue hair casting a strange luster in the dim light. “Oh? What might the identity of our little crow be, then?”
You Yan gave him a cold glance but remained silent.
“You Yan is a Commoner,” Liu Xin said with absolute certainty. “I can guarantee it.”
Pei Baiyang cast a contemplative look at Liu Xin, the smile at the corners of his lips deepening. “Interesting.”
“Hey, four-eyes, are you sure you’re the real Seer?” Zhang Wei asked gruffly, cracking his knuckles loudly. “You aren’t just a Werewolf jumping out to trick us, are you?”
Liu Xin adjusted his glasses. “If I were a Werewolf, I could have easily accused a good player of being a Werewolf to get them eliminated. Why would I claim someone is a Commoner? What good would that do me?”
You Yan knew perfectly well that Liu Xin was not the real Seer; he was likely drawing the Werewolves’ fire to protect the actual Seer. By a strange twist of fate, Liu Xin had misidentified him as a Commoner, which undoubtedly handed You Yan a massive advantage.
“Hey, theoretician,” He Yanqing suddenly chimed in, his eyes locked firmly on You Yan. “What do you think?”
You Yan threw a freezing glance his way. “Boring.”
“Let me say a few words,” Chen Yiyi’s gentle voice broke in. She smoothed her long golden hair, her expression so earnest that it was impossible to doubt her. “I think what Liu Xin said makes sense. Besides, the Witch had to save someone on the very first night, which proves the Werewolves have already made their move. We need to be careful.”
Li Luoyu kicked a piece of broken wood on the ground in irritation. “This is so annoying! I’m a Commoner. If you’re going to vote, just do it quickly!”
“Brat, shut up,” Zhang Wei glared at him before turning back to the group. “I suspect You Yan. That kid hasn’t muttered a single word from start to finish. There’s definitely something wrong with him.”
You Yan’s fingers tightened around the handle of his surgical knife, but his face remained entirely expressionless.
“Let’s vote,” Pei Baiyang said suddenly, his voice as calm as still water. “Everyone must state their choice… and their reasoning.”
The atmosphere inside the church grew instantly tense.
You Yan could feel He Yanqing’s gaze stuck to him like glue. The sensation of being targeted by a wild beast made the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.
“I’ll go first,” Pei Baiyang said elegantly, raising his hand. “I vote for Chen Yiyi.”
Chen Yiyi’s eyes widened in surprise. “Why?”
“Intuition,” Pei Baiyang smiled. “Your skills are related to disguised lies, aren’t they?”
Chen Yiyi’s expression shifted slightly, but she quickly recovered her gentle, lovely composure. “Mr. Pei, you certainly know how to joke.”
Secretly, however, panic stirred in her heart. The gap between her strength and Pei Baiyang’s was like night and day. If he had inspected her status panel and uncovered her abilities, every word she uttered from now on would be heavily scrutinized. This was undoubtedly a perilous situation for her. This particular rule of the God-Lord System was thoroughly unfair to novice players.
“I’m still voting for You Yan!” Zhang Wei said through gritted teeth. “You all know about the grudge between us. It might pose a threat to our win rate in this game, but even if he really is a Commoner, it’s no big loss if he gets voted out, right?”
Ignoring his gaze, You Yan stopped twirling his scalpel but chose not to argue. It seemed that entering a dungeon alongside someone who held a deadly grudge against you was indeed a dangerous variable. Then again, he quite enjoyed this kind of danger. One always needed to find a little excitement in a dull life, didn’t they?
Lin Xiaoyu looked at Zhang Wei with disapproval, but she didn’t dare say much, timidly raising her hand to abstain.
Chen Yiyi bit her lip. “I… I abstain. It’s still too early.”
Li Luoyu ran a hand through his hair in frustration. “I vote for the blue-haired guy! He’s been chirping away non-stop, it’s driving me crazy!”
Though he was terrified of He Yanqing, they were currently inside a dungeon game. He was merely playing by the rules. If Zhang Wei could use a personal grudge to dictate his vote, why couldn’t he? It wasn’t even a grudge; he simply found the guy eyesore.
He Yanqing clutched his chest dramatically. “Little Luoyu, you’re breaking my heart~”
You Yan spoke up coldly, “I vote for Zhang Wei.”
His reasoning was simple leaving someone who hated him alive on the field was a liability. This move would also force a tie, granting him another opportunity to defend himself, provided no one else voted for him…
At that moment, everyone’s gaze shifted to He Yanqing.
He tilted his head, his moonlight-blue hair falling over to obscure one eye, while his other eye gleamed with mischievous malice.
“As for me…” He dragged out his words, his eyes roaming over You Yan’s face. “I think I’ll cast my vote for our little crow~”
You Yan snapped his head up, a flash of bewilderment crossing his eyes. He now held the highest number of votes. According to Liu Xin’s claim, he was supposed to be a certified “Commoner,” so no one should have targeted him.
But He Yanqing wasn’t a normal human being. He was a complete lunatic.
