A Straight Wife Fallen from the Sky - Chapter 41
Mumu? Who are these people?” Sang Zhancheng saw two members of the Lizard tribe standing at the doorway.
She faltered for a moment, assuming they were Mu Jiahui’s friends, and wasn’t too worried.
Before Mu Jiahui could tell Sang Zhancheng to go back to her room, one of the Lizardmen spoke.
“You must be Miss Sang Zhancheng. Hello. We are debt collectors, here to reclaim the real estate registered under your father’s name.”
Mu Jiahui covered her forehead and took a sharp breath.
She couldn’t hide it anymore. The kid still had exams to take; what was to be done?
Sang Zhancheng didn’t react immediately. “Huh? Debt collectors……?”
“Go back inside first.” Mu Jiahui partially closed the door and made a gesture to Sang Zhancheng.
Sang Zhancheng turned mechanically, took a step, and then stopped.
“No, that’s not right! Mumu, they are here to collect a debt! My father, he, what happened to him?”
Sang Zhancheng’s hands began to shake.
She had realized what the Lizardmen were saying and, suddenly frantic, rushed in front of Mu Jiahui.
“Your father’s company has gone bankrupt, and he has used the properties under his name as collateral to repay the debts. This house no longer belongs to you, and we hope you can move out within the day.” The Lizardman outside the door spoke again, quite uncooperatively.
They were polite enough, but utterly cold and ruthless. Lacking any sense of tact, they were focused solely on achieving their goal without considering other people’s difficulties.
Sang Zhancheng stood frozen on the spot.
Bankruptcy? Repaying debts? Moving out?
She understood every word, but when put together, she didn’t comprehend the Lizardman’s meaning.
Her brain temporarily lost its processing function, unwilling to piece the bad news together.
Even so, Sang Zhancheng felt as though the world was spinning and turning upside down.
Mu Jiahui moved quickly to steady her.
“It’s not right…… why so sudden? Father never said anything to me……” Gradually, she found it difficult to catch her breath.
Sang Zhancheng felt only suffocation; even as she gasped for air, it was hard to draw in oxygen.
“This has nothing to do with us. In fact, your father’s company was on the verge of bankruptcy several weeks ago and officially declared bankruptcy last week. Even if he told you nothing, that is no excuse for you to default on the debt.”
The Lizardman’s words were colder than ice and sharper than a blade, stabbing into Sang Zhancheng’s heart word by word.
“……I need to contact him! No, I don’t believe it. A perfectly good company, how could it……”
Sang Zhancheng hurriedly began to fumbles for her phone. Failing to find it, she looked toward Mu Jiahui with a pleading gaze.
Mu Jiahui’s heart was stung by that pitiful look.
She silently returned the phone to Sang Zhancheng.
In the end, it couldn’t be hidden. Mu Jiahui looked at the Lizardmen at the door with a headache.
These people were truly terrifying, living up to their rank as the ninth on the list of the most cold-blooded races.
Sang Zhancheng couldn’t get through. She called Fu Yaoqin’s number, but still couldn’t get through.
The shock was too great; she even forgot to cry, standing blankly on the spot, reflexively repeating the action of dialing the phone.
Mu Jiahui watched with heartache.
“Stop calling.” She pressed down on Sang Zhancheng’s hand.
Sang Zhancheng looked up tremulously.
“But, but…… why aren’t they answering my calls? They wouldn’t be like this……” She still wanted to dial.
Mu Jiahui pulled Sang Zhancheng into an embrace. “Stop calling.”
It was a familiar and warm embrace.
Sang Zhancheng’s hand dropped, and the phone fell to the floor.
“Mu, Mumu…… why? Why is this happening?”
As if she had found someone to lean on, Sang Zhancheng huddled in Mu Jiahui’s arms and finally began to wail loudly.
“Apologies. Could I trouble you to wait one more day?” Mu Jiahui still had many things she didn’t understand. She wanted to bargain with the Lizardmen.
“I’m afraid not.” The Lizardmen would not be moved by mere tears.
Mu Jiahui took a deep breath. “I think we can talk about this.”
“I don’t think that is necessary, Miss Mu. You are not a member of the Sang family. From our perspective, we suggest you leave Miss Sang; that way, there will be no trouble for you, isn’t that, right?” The Lizardmen’s attitude was clear. They felt there was nothing to discuss.
“Moreover…… the previous person did exactly that.”
The Lizardman shrugged, speaking with pointed implication.
Hearing this, Sang Zhancheng looked up sharply at Mu Jiahui.
If Mu Jiahui were to leave her too, she really wouldn’t know what to do.
She had never experienced anything like this, nor did she dare to think about the future.
It was just as Mu Jiahui had said a few months ago: without her family, she couldn’t accomplish anything and could do nothing.
Mu Jiahui patted her back reassuringly and shook her head slightly.
“I’ll go talk to them. Be good and go back to the room first.”
“No!” Sang Zhancheng grabbed Mu Jiahui’s sleeve.
“Don’t go, don’t! Can you…… not leave me?”
Mu Jiahui let out a long sigh. She brushed the stray hairs behind Sang Zhancheng’s ear and patted her head.
“Why would you think that? I’m really just going to talk to them to see if we can keep the house. Be good, go back inside, don’t make a fuss.”
Sang Zhancheng watched as Mu Jiahui walked out of the house.
She finally couldn’t hold herself up anymore and collapsed to the floor. Her whole body was shaking, and her tears wouldn’t stop.
She thought she could always live a life of eating, drinking, and playing. She thought that, given her father’s abilities, such a thing wouldn’t happen.
It was as if she thought the beautiful dream would never end.
The floor was freezing, and the house was empty and silent; the entire space seemed to emit a chilling air.
Sang Zhancheng shivered and curled into a very small ball.
Now, Mu Jiahui might be leaving her too.
She couldn’t hold her back; she had no right to beg Mu Jiahui to stay.
After all, perhaps Mu Jiahui didn’t love her that much.
They had only done “that sort of thing” once, and Mu Jiahui had never said she liked her.
The companion contract was something she had forced upon her in the first place.
Tears blurred her vision and blurred her reason.
The phone rang at that moment.
It rang twice before Sang Zhancheng heard it.
It was as if all her senses had slowed down; even her movement to reach out was sluggish.
It was a call from her older sister.
Once connected, both sides remained silent for a second.
“Cheng-zi.” Her sister’s voice sounded incredibly exhausted.
Sang Zhancheng thought that her sister probably had no house to live in either.
“Yi Ming is gone.” Sang Xunmo was walking on the street, aimlessly.
She gazed at the surrounding street scenes, filled with endless confusion.
Her parents’ phones wouldn’t go through, and her friends had gradually drifted away after she got married.
At a time like this, she actually had no one but her younger sister to complain to.
What kind of life had she been living?
Sang Zhancheng sat up abruptly, yet felt increasingly weak. “Who? Brother-in-law?!”
Yi Ming was Sang Xunmo’s companion. He was also Sang Zhancheng’s brother-in-law.
So that was what the Lizardman meant when he said “someone did exactly that.”
“Yes. How are things…… on your end?” Sang Xunmo almost didn’t dare to ask.
Her relationship with her husband had been so good, and he was a member of the most loyal Canine tribe, yet after she had no money and no home, her husband chose to abandon her.
Sang Zhancheng’s companion seemed estranged from her, and their relationship didn’t look harmonious; could she really stay?
But Sang Xunmo hoped Mu Jiahui wouldn’t leave.
Sang Zhancheng had only just turned eighteen; she had never seen anything or suffered at all. If Mu Jiahui were also gone, it would be too cruel.
But they had nothing left to make someone stay.
“I, I don’t know…… someone came to collect the house, Mumu went to, to negotiate with them…… she hasn’t, hasn’t come back yet.”
After saying this, Sang Zhancheng was on the verge of despair. What if Mu Jiahui never came back?
Besides, what right did she have to ask Mu Jiahui to stay? What could she give Mu Jiahui?
Her body, sex, emotional support…… it sounded nice, but Sang Zhancheng felt Mu Jiahui didn’t need any of it.
If Mu Jiahui liked it, if she needed it, would their mode of interaction still be like this?
Sure enough, Sang Xunmo also let out a sigh. “Sister…… perhaps we’ll have to pitch a tent tonight.”
Sang Zhancheng heard a light chuckle. This frightened her even more. Her sister was trying to comfort her, but she was starting to break down.
“What about the youngest sister? Have you contacted her?” Sang Zhancheng tried hard not to think about it.
“No. She’s with our parents, and they can’t be reached either.” Sang Xunmo was walking toward the main family villa.
“I’ll go check in a bit. If you’re…… if she leaves, I’ll come pick you up later.”
“Okay.” Sang Zhancheng had no other choice.
She suddenly remembered that a few months ago, Mu Jiahui had said money was important.
Perhaps Mu Jiahui was only with her for the money. If she could, Sang Zhancheng would be willing to give all the money to her.
But she had no money left.
Sang Zhancheng clutched her phone, curled back into a ball, and sobbed uncontrollably on the floor.
It was quiet for a long time.
The door suddenly opened. Sang Zhancheng sat up and saw Mu Jiahui.
“Mu, Mumu! Mumu! Waaa…… is it really you? Mumu!!”
Sang Zhancheng suddenly found the strength to lunge toward Mu Jiahui.
Mu Jiahui caught her and patted her back. “It’s me, don’t cry.”
Mu Jiahui sighed.
Sang Zhancheng’s body went stiff.
Mu Jiahui wasn’t here to say goodbye, was she? Otherwise, why would she be so gentle?
“I…… didn’t succeed in the negotiation. We have to change houses.” To be precise, if Mu Jiahui had had another hundred thousand, she certainly would have succeeded.
Unfortunately, she didn’t have much money either. However, she managed to get an apartment from the Lizardmen nearby; she paid three months’ rent and decided to move Sang Zhancheng in first.
“It doesn’t matter, waaa……” Sang Zhancheng held onto Mu Jiahui and wouldn’t let go, crying miserably.
“As long as you’re here, don’t leave……”
“I’m not leaving. Why would I leave? We’re companions.” It wasn’t about love, but a kind of pity, a kind of responsibility.
Sang Zhancheng clung even tighter.
Mu Jiahui wanted to let go. They had to move before dark, and Sang Zhancheng had so many things; they certainly wouldn’t finish in one trip.
Sang Zhancheng wouldn’t let go, and throughout the process of packing, she refused to unhand Mu Jiahui.
“Are we taking this? Let go, I can’t pick things up.”
“Take it…… uh, maybe not.”
“What about this one? Don’t cling to me.”
“Ying, I don’t want it anymore.”
Sang Zhancheng also felt that worldly possessions were no longer important.
She only took one wardrobe of clothes and gave up on things like cosmetics.
Watching a group of Lizardmen enter the house she had lived in for over three years, Sang Zhancheng was more than a little sad.
But at least Mu Jiahui was there.
Sang Zhancheng pressed close to Mu Jiahui’s side, leaning on her.
“Good girl.” Mu Jiahui coaxed her companion like she was coaxing a puppy.
Sang “Little White” was, of course, coaxed.
They moved to the new home.
The new home was actually not bad.
Two bedrooms and a living room, though overall it was much smaller than their original home.
Sang Zhancheng didn’t feel right complaining; her sister was homeless, so having a place to live was already good enough.
“Mumu, I, I have no money left……” Sang Zhancheng fidgeted a bit and hugged Mu Jiahui’s arm.
Since Mu Jiahui hadn’t left even then, did she actually like her quite a bit?
“So, so…… are you going to support me?” Sang Zhancheng asked Mu Jiahui, imitating the novels she had read.
