- Chapter 2 - Taking Him Home
Shi Song felt guilty being questioned like this; it was indeed his fault.
Counting it up, he hadn’t seen Wei Shuyun for five years, but yesterday that familiar number had suddenly sent him a message.
“Xiaosong, Huaichen and I have returned to the country.”
“If you have time this weekend, come home.”
It was still the same commanding tone he was familiar with.
When he received this message, Shi Song was in an easy lecture class and had been planning to lean on the desk for a quick nap. The moment he saw the sender’s name, he reflexively sat up straight with wide eyes, his mind going completely blank for a second.
He gripped his phone, feeling so nervous it was as if Wei Shuyun were already standing right in front of him.
I’m not dreaming, am I?
He took a deep breath before opening the text message.
Right above this message were several “Happy New Year” greetings that Shi Song had sent her. Without exception, all of those empty words meaningless in Wei Shuyun’s eyes had vanished into the sea without a trace. They were neatly arranged one after another at the midnight mark of every single New Year, looking incredibly lonely.
Shi Song’s eyes dimmed a little.
He did miss Wei Shuyun, but perhaps it was the anxiety of returning home, or perhaps it was having clearly seen Wei Shuyun’s apathy over all these years, that suddenly made him want to evade it.
Today was already Friday, and he had indeed been physically and mentally exhausted this week due to the art competition. Surely it wouldn’t matter if he dragged it out for a couple of days to adjust his mood, right?
Shi Song hesitated for a moment before replying, “Mom, I have classes this weekend. You and my brother should rest and get over the jet lag first. I’ll head back as soon as I find time next week.”
Wei Shuyun’s reply came quickly: “Fine.”
Shi Song turned off his phone screen and secretly sighed in his heart.
He had planned everything out perfectly back then to deal with the messy shambles of his family next week, but he never expected that the only time he didn’t tell the truth, he would be caught red-handed.
Not knowing how to explain this situation to Wei Huaichen, Shi Song could only blink his eyes gently.
Wei Huaichen smiled understandingly.
Instead of continuing the topic, he said in a warm voice, “If you go back, Mother will be very happy. She has missed you a lot over these years.”
His dove-gray eyes still looked at Shi Song, the gloom within them having completely dissipated. Such a posture made it very easy for people to let down their guard. “So, are you willing to go back with me?”
Shi Song hesitated for two seconds.
He had originally wanted to escape, but because of that bizarre dream he had last night, he actually had some things he wanted to go back and verify.
Right at that moment, a clear, bright voice suddenly cut in from the side: “Songsong, so you were here.”
It was Lin Yiming.
He walked forward a few steps and tilted his head in confusion, as if he had only just discovered someone else was there. “Ah? This is…”
“So you had an appointment with someone today.”
Wei Huaichen glanced at Lin Yiming nonchalantly and smiled at Shi Song. “Aren’t you going to introduce me?”
Both of them looked at Shi Song simultaneously.
There was an indescribable intimacy in the man’s posture, and Lin Yiming instantly felt a surge of anxiety from being shut out.
The man’s looks were simply too superior, and even his clothes revealed an extraordinary elegance. Being stared at by those dove-gray eyes made Lin Yiming feel uncomfortable all over; anyone would feel a sense of crisis in front of such a person.
What’s more, he didn’t want anyone else to take Songsong away at all.
Half a month ago, Shi Song had complained to him that he hadn’t managed to snag tickets for a certain play at the Beijing Theater. Lin Yiming had kept it in mind and pulled strings everywhere to barely manage to buy two tickets from internal sources at a high price, wanting to give him a surprise today.
Just now, outside the wall, he had vaguely heard that the man seemed to want to take Shi Song somewhere, which was why Lin Yiming had quickly stepped forward to interrupt their conversation.
“I am his…”
The words boyfriend were right on the tip of his tongue, but Lin Yiming didn’t want to bring extra trouble to Shi Song just yet. After a moment of deliberation, he reluctantly changed his wording, “I am Shi Song’s university classmate.”
Lin Yiming didn’t consider himself a very jealous person, but perhaps because the aura of the person in front of him was too dangerous, alarm bells were ringing wildly in his heart right now.
If the man hadn’t been blocking the doorway, Lin Yiming almost wanted to go inside, stand by Shi Song’s side, and pull him into his own territory.
He stared straight into Wei Huaichen’s eyes, and a subtle confrontation formed between the two.
Because of Lin Yiming’s tense attitude, the air became inexplicably hostile.
Wei Huaichen, on the other hand, chuckled rather carelessly, his casual expression forming a sharp contrast with Lin Yiming.
That laughter stabbed into Lin Yiming’s ears like a thorn. In an instant, his head grew hot and he became increasingly aggressive, tilting his chin up slightly. “If you have anything to say to Shi Song, it’s the same if you tell me.”
These words could be called childish, but Lin Yiming didn’t have the peace of mind to consider that right now.
He felt that the man’s attitude was entirely filled with an indescribable contempt, which threatened his claim over Shi Song.
“Oh… is your relationship that good?”
Wei Huaichen’s high-and-mighty posture could be described as scrutinizing. He leaned slightly against the wall and spoke with great interest.
“Of course!” Lin Yiming felt more and more that the man was deliberately provoking him, so he immediately shot back, “I know exactly what Shi Song likes and dislikes. How could our relationship not be good?”
Beside them, Shi Song frowned slightly.
Before this, Lin Yiming really liked to talk everywhere about how deep their feelings were, and whenever people used it to tease him, he felt very uncomfortable.
Shi Song finally couldn’t bear it anymore and spoke up, “Alright Yiming, he is…”
His voice rang out at the same time as Wei Huaichen’s: “I am his brother.”
How could that be? Shi Song had never mentioned he had a brother!
Lin Yiming felt a buzzing sound in his brain, and his eyes widened involuntarily.
Looking at his bewildered expression, Wei Huaichen slowly added another sentence: “Seeing that Songsong gets along well with his classmates, I can rest assured.”
The repeated pet name was much more intimate compared to Lin Yiming’s form of address, tapping twice against Shi Song’s ear canal like a little hammer. Shi Song’s hand hanging by his side lightly hooked the fabric of his pants, feeling inexplicably nervous because of this nickname.
He had thought Wei Huaichen would be unwilling to acknowledge their relationship, but right now his attitude was remarkably candid, silently declaring that the worries in Shi Song’s heart from before didn’t count.
Wei Huaichen smiled very politely. He was already handsome, and when he smiled, his dove-gray eyes carried a bit of casual laziness, though his voice remained cool.
He lowered his eyes slightly, his posture proud and elegant. “However, I don’t think you can make decisions on behalf of Songsong.”
These words were spoken rather bluntly, but Lin Yiming didn’t dare say another word.
He instantly woke up to how incredibly annoying he had been just now.
The person opposite him… was someone’s brother.
He was simply so embarrassed that he wanted to sink into the ground, and his scalp tingled as he said, “No, I’m sorry, I didn’t know…”
Lin Yiming was practically scratching his head in anxiety, but nothing he said now would help.
Wei Huaichen smiled and showed great magnanimity, indicating it was fine. Right after that, he asked Shi Song, “So, are you going to continue with your classmate, or come home with me?”
The air fell into silence for two seconds.
Lin Yiming hung his head in frustration, his hands clenched into fists at his sides.
After a moment of thought, Shi Song looked at Lin Yiming. “I’m sorry, I didn’t expect to have plans today either… how about we make an appointment next time?”
Putting aside his previous hesitation, Shi Song really did miss home a little.
Although he was mentally prepared, seeing himself become the discarded option still caused a wave of disappointment to rise in Lin Yiming’s heart.
But he also blamed himself for not telling Shi Song clearly about the theater tickets beforehand. Right now, having just snapped at the guy’s brother, it was no longer appropriate for him to open his mouth to say anything else.
He could only find someone else to watch the long-anticipated play with.
Lin Yiming pursed his lips imperceptibly. “Alright then, I’ll head back to school first. See you later.”
“Yeah, bye-bye.”
Shi Song breathed a sigh of relief.
On the way back.
Neither of the two people in the car spoke, and the atmosphere was somewhat awkward for a while.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Shi Song couldn’t quite bear this kind of atmosphere and couldn’t help turning his head to speak, “When did you guys get back?”
His voice was a bit soft, and his movement of turning his head revealed a small, beautifully lined section of his neck.
Wei Huaichen’s hands were resting on the steering wheel.
He casually glanced at the rearview mirror and happened to meet the youth’s eyes there. They were a pair of light-colored almond eyes, clear and pure, with fine fragments of light shimmering inside, unable to hide even a speck of dirt.
He had only seen this younger brother of his once a few years ago. Back then, he also had such a bewildered and innocent expression. Aside from his facial features becoming more beautiful and delicate, the passage of a few years didn’t seem to have left any trace on Shi Song.
Wei Huaichen calmly withdrew his gaze. “Yesterday morning.”
Then it seemed Wei Shuyun had indeed sent him a message as soon as she returned.
A tiny bit of joy flashed through Shi Song’s heart.
The Wei family’s villa was a long distance away from Xianyunji. The feeling of staying in a confined space with Wei Huaichen made Shi Song a bit nervous at first, but after the drive was halfway through, his mind relaxed, and he gradually grew sleepy.
The sunlight was just right today, falling softly and lightly on Shi Song’s face through the car window. Furthermore, Wei Huaichen drove very smoothly. Having had nightmares all night last night, Shi Song hadn’t slept well to begin with. His head slowly leaned against the car window, his eyes half-closed.
The scene in front of him became blurry…
By the time he drove into the villa district, Wei Huaichen turned his head to look, only to find that Shi Song, who hadn’t made a sound in the passenger seat for a long time, had already fallen asleep with his body slanted.
The boy’s soft hair draped lightly against the side of his face, his long eyelashes casting a small shadow under his eyes, and his lips were slightly parted by a tiny gap. His breathing was even, his fingers curled up, and his entire being exuded a complete lack of defensiveness.
For a moment, Wei Huaichen actually felt a bit helpless. Frankly speaking, they weren’t close, yet Shi Song could actually fall asleep in this kind of environment; it could only be said that he truly had no wariness toward people.
This kind of vivid emotion hadn’t appeared on him for too many years. After a long while, Wei Huaichen knitted his brows.
“Shi Song.”
His voice was calm, sounding as cool as if it were rolled in mint leaves.
“Mmh…”
But Shi Song didn’t wake up immediately.
Seeming to hear someone calling him, he let out an extremely faint murmur from his throat. It was thin and soft, practically like a kitten using its not-yet-fully-grown claws to lightly scratch at Wei Huaichen’s heart.
Wei Huaichen’s fingers resting on the steering wheel twitched, and his eyes darkened.
