A Single Father’s Troubles - Chapter 13
Chapter 13: The Truth
At nine o’clock, Kuang Ye arrived at the company with a foul face and two dark circles under his eyes.
No one in the company was unaware of Kuang Ye’s heavy “wake-up grump.” Unless there was something exceptionally important, usually no one would disturb him before ten-thirty.
Kuang Ye blackly turned on his computer to look at the information Feng Xu had sent him.
A middle-aged man in his fifties stood at the door and gave a cough.
Kuang Ye casually closed the file, looked up, and called out to the man, “Dad.”
“When did you get back?” Kuang Yu asked with a serious expression.
“Yesterday.”
“Why didn’t you call home when you returned?”
“Forgot.”
Kuang Yu was choked by his words and was deathly irritated; if he hadn’t been thinking about the matter his wife had entrusted to him, he would have turned around and left by now.
Suppressing the urge to lose his temper, Kuang Yu said, “Now that you’re back, come home for dinner tonight. Your mother talks about you every day. Xiao Ce and Lanlan haven’t seen you in a long time either.”
Kuang Ye arched an eyebrow: “Eating as a family is fine, but don’t let there be some extra cousin or female relative again.”
Kuang Yu glared and scolded: “You’re not young anymore; you don’t date, and you don’t look for a partner. What exactly do you want to do? Can’t you be a good role model for your younger brother and sister?”
“Kuang Ce just entered his first year of high school this year, and Kuang Lan is only 13. What kind of role model should I be for them?” Kuang Ye looked at Kuang Yu, who was patting the table in anger, and said, “If they truly start puppy love, won’t it be you guys who have the headache?”
Kuang Ye hadn’t slept at all last night, guarding the door waiting for that “dead person” from Lin Tingwan’s house to return. He waited all night and didn’t see him, and then heard frogs croaking early in the morning. He already had a wake-up grump, and now his mood was even worse, so he was too lazy to pull that “this and that” nonsense with his dad.
“Why don’t you and Mom work hard to push for a fourth child? Consider it playing a vanguard exemplary role for Party members, and stop aiming your schemes at me.”
Kuang Ye acted as if he didn’t see his father’s sour face and said, “Wasn’t Kuang Lan born in response to the ‘three-child’ policy? I see your ‘prized sword’ is not yet old, and my mom is still young too. Although I don’t like kids, if there really is an extra younger brother or sister, I don’t mind raising them as a son.”
Kuang Yu was stunned by these few bastardly sentences from Kuang Ye. He raised his foot to kick him, but Kuang Ye dodged it with a flash and walked toward the lounge while yawning. Opening the door, he said to his old father, whose face had turned the color of pig liver, “Dad, I’m going to sleep for a bit. I didn’t close my eyes all night. Close the door when you go out.”
After saying that, he really did close the door and went to sleep.
Kuang Yu, a big boss of several thousand employees and a major taxpayer in City B, hadn’t endured this kind of frustration in a long time. Yet, the person speaking was his eldest son. Although he was choked with rage, thinking of the two massive dark circles under Kuang Ye’s eyes, he still felt heartache. He slammed the door in a huff and left.
Before leaving, he specifically told the secretary not to disturb Kuang Ye unless there was something important.
However, Kuang Ye didn’t dodge that meal after all. He was caught by his father’s secretary just before finishing work and returned home unwillingly.
Just as he entered the house, a large dog with shiny fur darted out from the living room and rushed toward Kuang Ye like crazy.
Kuang Ye squatted down and made a gesture toward the dog. The excited dog stuck out its tongue and kept circling around Kuang Ye.
“Cola, did you miss Daddy?” Kuang Ye reached out and scratched its chin. Cola gave two joyful barks.
A faint smile appeared on Kuang Ye’s cold face as he indulgently let Cola bite the cuff of his trousers and drag him inside.
“Hey, Cola, let go of Big Brother!”
A boy who looked sixty to seventy percent similar to Kuang Ye walked out of the living room. Seeing this scene, the boy gave a low scolding.
“It’s fine.” Kuang Ye stroked the dog’s head, his cold side-profile appearing somewhat gentle.
Kuang Ce complained in a small voice: “Brother, Cola has already bitten and ruined several pairs of your pants! You can’t indulge it like this!”
Following behind Kuang Ce, a pretty girl who looked even younger smilingly chimed in: “In Brother’s heart, Cola is much more precious than pants.”
Kuang Lan tilted her head, looking at Kuang Ye with curved eyes: “Am I right, Brother?”
Kuang Ye was too lazy to answer. With a toss of his hand, he threw the item in his grasp to her.
Kuang Lan looked at it inside the envelope were actually the concert tickets of the idol she had wanted for a long time! And three of them!
“Ahhh!!! Brother, Brother, Brother, I love you!!!” Kuang Lan hugged Kuang Ye’s neck while jumping up and down.
A beautiful woman who walked out upon hearing the noise saw this and shouted from afar, “Wild girl, your brother is almost being strangled to death by you. Let go quickly!”
Kuang Lan withdrew her hands sheepishly.
A patch of Kuang Ye’s neck had been turned red by her fingers. He rubbed his aching neck and looked at Kuang Lan’s fair hands. “Your strength is quite something.”
“Isn’t she? The ‘female tyrant’ at school, no one dares to mess with her,” Kuang Ce said without looking up, obsessively fiddling with the signed basketball in his hands.
Kuang Lan stuck out her tongue.
The beautiful woman had already walked to her eldest son’s side, checking him over with concern.
Kuang Ye called out, “Mom.”
Huo Yu was nearly fifty, but she was extremely well-maintained and looked only in her early forties; it was impossible to tell she was the mother of three. The three siblings clearly took after Huo Yu more, all having very outstanding looks.
“Stinky boy, you come back and don’t come home? Planning to rebel, are you?” Seeing no obvious injuries, Huo Yu’s beautiful eyes flickered, and she raised her hand to give a heavy slap on Kuang Ye’s arm.
Kuang Ye was made of hard muscles, and Huo Yu hadn’t used much force, so it didn’t hurt him. Instead, Huo Yu’s hand turned red.
Kuang Yu saw it and frowned: “Why are you hitting him? You’ve made your hand red.”
Huo Yu shot him a look and scolded, “Who asked you to meddle!”
The poor President Kuang, who managed thousands of employees, endured frustration from his wife every day. He made the remote control click loudly as he pressed it.
Huo Yu acted as if she didn’t hear it, looking at her beloved eldest son with tenderness and concern. “Is the water pipe at the villa fixed yet?”
“Didn’t ask. Staying at Luhu lately.”
Huo Yu frowned, quite disapproving: “The house over there is so small. How can it be comfortable to live in?”
The Luhu house was the largest unit in that building when they bought it, and even the largest was only a bit over a hundred square meters.
Huo Yu added, “Why don’t you move home? The house here is spacious and comfortable.”
“Staying there is also quite comfortable.” Kuang Ye washed his hands and sat down to eat fruit. Huo Yu moved the plate of mangoes specially prepared for him to his front.
Kuang Ye was very picky about fruit; he only liked mangoes and watermelons and basically wouldn’t touch anything else.
“Then Mama will go clean for you tomorrow. No one has lived over there for a long time.”
Kuang Ye acted as if he heard some fantasy tale. He put down his fork and looked at his mom. “Don’t go. Since when do you know how to clean? Later, when Dad feels bad for you, he’ll have to give me a ‘small shoe’ to wear.”
Huo Yu and Kuang Yu had a very good relationship, but being teased like this by her son, she pinched Kuang Ye with a red face. “Are you trying to irritate me to death?”
Kuang Yu, who was pressing the remote, gave a cough and said with authority: “That’s enough, let’s eat.”
Dinner finished at only seven o’clock. The high schooler who had evening self-study wasn’t even in a hurry to leave, but Kuang Ye appeared more hurried than him. Dropping a sentence that he had things to handle, he slipped away in a flash.
Watching his son’s disappearing silhouette, Huo Yu complained to Kuang Yu, “Old Kuang, I listened to you and stopped nagging him about marriage. Why does he still run so fast? Are there needles on the chairs in our house?”
Kuang Yu also felt Kuang Ye was acting out of line. He took out his phone and said, “I’ll call him back.”
Kuang Lan, who was still showing off to her friends that her brother gave her three tickets, chimed in casually, “Mom, Dad, Brother is so old; he must have something to do to leave like that. Maybe he’s going to see a partner.”
“What?!” Huo Yu cried out.
Kuang Yu put down his phone and looked at his youngest daughter, asking suspiciously: “What did your brother say to you?”
“Brother said he was going to ‘squat’ for someone. His tone was very calm; surely he isn’t going for a fight.”
Kuang Yu and his wife looked at each other again.
That made some sense; Kuang Ye hadn’t been much of a fighter in recent years.
“Then besides fighting, what else could it be?” Kuang Lan spread her hands and shrugged her shoulders: “Likely he’s gone to ‘squat’ for my little sister-in-law.”
Huo Yu felt it seemed right yet also wrong. She turned to look at Kuang Yu and didn’t make a sound.
Kuang Yu couldn’t figure it out either. He coughed and said, “I’ll have someone inquire about it tomorrow.”
Kuang Ye was in such a hurry indeed to go “squat” for someone.
When he reached home, it was already past eight. Lin Tingwan’s window was dark; it seemed they were out.
Kuang Ye patiently checked the time, chose a good spot, and waited while hidden in the shadows.
After waiting for about ten minutes, the “Gua-Gua” “Gua-Gua” croaking appeared again.
The corner of Kuang Ye’s mouth twitched, and he silently moved behind a tree.
Two long shadows, one big and one small, fell on the ground. A little kid wearing a hat was hopping and jumping, playing by treading on the shadows.
Lin Tingwan held him with one hand, while the other held a plastic bag containing a few “Guifei” mangoes and two boxes of blueberries.
The father and son didn’t notice that in the dark spot where the streetlights couldn’t reach, someone was standing in the bushes.
The “Gua-Gua” frog sounds became crispier with every step Guagua took, sounding very sharp in the quiet compound. Lin Tingwan couldn’t take it anymore, picked up the chubby kid, and walked quickly into the elevator.
Once the elevator went up, Kuang Ye quickly followed.
Today, Feng Xu had sent him the information he had gathered. The original owner of the neighboring unit was a professor from the B University College of Liberal Arts. Two years ago, the house was transferred to his son, Bian Wang.
Feng Xu was indeed more reliable than Shen Zhidong and the others. Not only did he check the information for this house for Kuang Ye, but he also took a couple of extra steps.
Feng Xu sent Kuang Ye two files.
One was the information for the landlord of the house Lin Tingwan originally rented. The owner was named Zhao Congfang, wife of Bian Wenmao. The other file was the rental contract for this house; the landlord column was written as “Bian Wang.”
Seeing this, what was there that Kuang Ye didn’t understand?
If Lin Tingwan were truly with Bian Wang, Bian Wang wouldn’t have signed a housing rental contract with him.
Furthermore, Kuang Ye had an impression of Bian Wenmao he was Lin Tingwan’s Modern Chinese teacher. He remembered Lin Tingwan’s class schedule better than Lin Tingwan did.
However, Kuang Ye didn’t knock on the door immediately. Instead, he guarded the door for two days. Bian Wang didn’t appear during those two days. Not only was Bian Wang absent, but no other men or women were seen either.
Kuang Ye then understood that Lin Tingwan was still single.
Although he was dying to rush in front of that little liar right away and expose him, Kuang Ye held back.
Lin Tingwan was timid; if he showed even a slight offensive stance, he would run… and this guy was still lying to him now. Who knew how many secrets he still had.
Kuang Ye thought for a moment and quickly had an idea.
He pulled out his phone and made a call, which was quickly answered.
“Hello, Sister Sun, I’m not disturbing you, am I…”
