A Scummy Alpha and An Award-Winning Omega Actress Fell in Love After an Arranged Marriage - Chapter 6
The pleasant atmosphere was completely ruined, but dinner still had to be eaten.
While waiting for the soup to simmer, Sheng Lan picked up her phone and sent a message, playing the role of “Domineering CEO Lan” for a moment. Then she prepared the rest of the side dishes before returning to the living room to finish arranging the fruit platter that Lu Xueyin had left incomplete.
At dinner, she knocked on Lu Xueyin’s door.
She didn’t hold out much hope, but Lu Xueyin came out.
Sheng Lan raised an eyebrow, avoiding any mention of the phone call, and simply said, “Dinner’s ready.”
Lu Xueyin replied politely, “Thank you. You’ve worked hard.”
Sheng Lan’s fingers itched.
She wanted to pinch Lu Xueyin’s cheeks and coax out some other expression.
Lu Xueyin’s skin was delicate whether flushed from emotion or from being pinched, it would look far more lively than her current reserved demeanor.
She even came up with an excuse for herself.
She wasn’t bullying anyone; she was just admiring a beauty.
But an explanation was still necessary. “I’ve asked someone to continue gathering evidence. I’ll follow up on this matter, don’t worry.”
Lu Xueyin didn’t say whether she believed her or not. In any case, dinner was quiet, no hostility toward Sheng Lan, nor any of the deliberate teasing from before.
That night.
For some inexplicable reason, Sheng Lan couldn’t sleep. She was unbearably thirsty.
On her nightstand sat a large bottle of mineral water, her favorite yogurt, and some fruit juices.
She eyed them one by one before finally sitting up and deciding to go to the kitchen for some hot water.
At one in the morning, the house was silent.
Even the faintest click of the door latch was sharp enough to grate against Sheng Lan’s eardrums.
It felt unbearably loud.
Only a thief sneaking into unfamiliar territory in the dead of night would be this hyperaware.
Sheng Lan mechanically filled her cup.
Half cold, half hot just the right temperature.
But the water tasted bland.
If she focused, there was even a slight bitterness.
The itch in her chest was unbearable.
It urged her to grab onto something.
Tonight, Lu Xueyin wasn’t here.
Sheng Lan wandered aimlessly around the living room, cup in hand, feeling utterly disinterested.
The soft tap-tap of her soles against the floor annoyed her, so she kicked off her slippers and walked barefoot.
The carpet only covered the area around the coffee table.
A fleeting image crossed Sheng Lan’s mind Lu Xueyin lounging lazily on the sofa, her toes brushing against the plush, velvety fibers.
When she took another sip, the water suddenly tasted faintly sweet.
Like rose tea.
Sheng Lan avoided stepping on that patch of carpet and didn’t touch the cushion Lu Xueyin had leaned against.
She washed her cup in the kitchen, running cold water over her wrists to cool down.
No wonder Lu Xueyin had tested her a few times before becoming convinced she was a fake Alpha.
She must have been all too aware of her own allure to Alphas.
Back in her room, Sheng Lan even brushed her teeth.
Grinding away the itch in her canines, suppressing the urge to mark.
Maybe she’d just been single for too long, to the point where even a cold, thorny rose could make her heart race.
Remember your cannon-fodder fate.
You must have a death wish.
Sheng Lan sprayed a high-concentration inhibitor directly in her face.
The dosage was excessive she sneezed over a dozen times in a row.
Most people wouldn’t think to soundproof their own home.
So Sheng Lan successfully woke Lu Xueyin up.
This woman, bold even online, actually asked if Sheng Lan had taken a cold shower in the middle of the night.
[Lu Xueyin]: Too much pent-up energy is bad for your health.
The fatal part? This only made Sheng Lan even more intrigued by Lu Xueyin.
Perhaps no one could resist a cold beauty whose words carried a hint of something suggestive.
Nor could anyone repeatedly resist the straightforward hooks of a gorgeous older sister.
She thought about Lu Xueyin so inexperienced yet so eager to tease, seemingly knowledgeable but lacking any real practice.
After careful consideration, she sent back a single sticker in response.
【Mountain Wind】: How many more surprises do you have that I don’t know about.jpg
Lu Xueyin ignored her again, but Sheng Lan didn’t mind, sleeping soundly until she woke up naturally.
Upon waking, she found herself once again pushed outside the circle of trust, the sliver of goodwill she had painstakingly built now completely gone.
Snapping out of the romanticized, filtered atmosphere from last night, Lu Xueyin’s words had clearly been mocking her.
Today, Lu Xueyin had a follow-up appointment and left early in the morning with Jiang Ling.
A lavish breakfast was left on the dining table so much that even Sheng Lan, an Alpha with a big appetite, couldn’t finish it all.
She texted Meng Chan to ask about Lu Xueyin’s test results.
Meng Chan added her to a small group chat with three people: herself, Meng Chan, and Yu Cheng.
Yu Cheng immediately spammed the chat with over a dozen high-definition photos.
They showed Sheng Lan and Lu Xueyin getting out of a car together, entering a residential complex, going into the same building, and later coming downstairs with luggage.
【Ears】: Just so you know, these photos cost me 300k. Pay up, or I’ll sell them off.
Making a deal.
And dragging a third party into it.
How boring.
Sheng Lan held down the photos, forwarded them all to Lu Xueyin in one go.
【Mountain Wind】: Dr. Meng was slacking off during your check-up. File a complaint.
Lu Xueyin held her phone, waiting for Meng Chan to deliver the test results while also coordinating with the show’s production team about tomorrow’s meeting location and the filming process for the “Guess Who” segment. There was no fixed script, but the basic questions were predictable anyone who’d seen the show knew the drill.
Just as she was about to reply, Sheng Lan’s message popped up.
Her fingers paused briefly before tapping into it.
Lu Xueyin hadn’t added Meng Chan or Yu Cheng as friends and didn’t recognize their profile pictures or nicknames. Seeing Sheng Lan mention Meng Chan’s name, she assumed the sender was Meng Chan.
The profile picture showed a pair of legs in white knee-high socks, a shoe dangling from the toes, with a glimpse of a plaid skirt.
The nickname read: Alpha Energy Overload
Lu Xueyin glanced up at Meng Chan, who was typing coldly on her phone as if discussing official business, and thought, “…”
Meng Chan replied in the group chat: Yu Cheng says you blocked her. You two talk it out.
Then, turning to Lu Xueyin, she delivered the results. “Your pheromones are still unstable. You mentioned your heat is due at the end of the month that’s just two days away. If your pheromones remain unstable by then, suppressants might not work. You’ll likely need an Alpha’s mark.”
Lu Xueyin’s lashes trembled slightly.
She asked, “I remember there are inhibitor injections?”
Meng Chan refused to prescribe them. “You have an Alpha. A safer treatment option would be a temporary mark, it’s harmless. Inhibitor shots only suppress heat symptoms temporarily, and the rebound afterward can be severe.”
Given her career, Lu Xueyin couldn’t afford a rebound.
Moreover, the inducer in her system hadn’t fully cleared yet. A rebound now would come with heavy side effects.
If her pheromone levels neared disorder thresholds again, treatment would become much harder.
Lu Xueyin lowered her gaze.
Since Sheng Lan had forwarded the messages to her and revealed that Meng Chan had been slacking off in a chat and given how close the two were Lu Xueyin had her suspicions. Was this suggestion a scheme between Sheng Lan and Meng Chan?
But then again, she had offered herself up multiple times, actively inviting Sheng Lan, who had never crossed the line. It didn’t seem likely.
She sent Sheng Lan a message.
【Lu Xueyin】: Do you even know how to mark someone?
Sheng Lan took it as a deliberate jab at her insecurities and responded with a flood of crying emojis.
【Mountain Wind】: Sis! Every word you typed hurts my soul!
Lu Xueyin was utterly bewildered.
If suppressant injections weren’t allowed, and her Alpha wouldn’t mark her, then what was she supposed to do?
Just grab some random Alpha off the street?
She tactfully hinted to Meng Chan that Sheng Lan wasn’t up to the task.
Meng Chan’s pen clattered to the floor.
