A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 4
If it were just a dream about breaking her leg, it wouldn’t have kept her awake all night.
What Yu Ning didn’t tell Sun Yiyi was that she dreamed Lin Yanqing had pushed her down the stairs. In her panic, she grew angry at herself for having such a dream. Even though Lin Yanqing was cold toward her, she had never laid a hand on her. Besides, her coldness was simply part of her nature. Dreaming something like this was truly absurd. Lost in these thoughts, the night slipped away.
As for why she had such a dream, Yu Ning still couldn’t figure it out.
Could it be because Lin Yanqing had hung up on her last night, stirring up resentment in her heart?
Yu Ning shook her head fiercely, trying to push the emotion out of her mind, and scolded herself harshly: You don’t truly love her at all! How could you slander her in your dreams!
Seeing how exhausted Yu Ning looked, Sun Yiyi decided not to disturb her further. “Then take advantage of the break to get some sleep.”
At these words, Yu Ning, who had been resting her head on the desk, immediately lifted it. Her hands rummaged through her desk as she fixed Sun Yiyi with an intense gaze. “Help me pass this bag of snacks to Yanqing.”
Sun Yiyi: “…”
Goodness, even after staying up all night and nearly being late, she hadn’t forgotten to buy snacks for Lin Yanqing.
As an honors class, the number of students was limited, with only a little over twenty in Class One. Since it was the break after the first morning class, everyone was resting, and the classroom was relatively quiet.
Originally, Yu Ning and Lin Yanqing had been desk mates. But during their first year of high school, Yu Ning often got into conflicts with others over Lin Yanqing, causing those seated around Lin Yanqing to harbor grievances against her. Even Lin Yanqing grew irritated and requested to sit alone, rejecting Yu Ning along with the rest of the class. Lin Yanqing had thought this would make Yu Ning tone down her behavior, but instead, it escalated, and Yu Ning frequently got into physical altercations with others.
The Yu Ning who acted like a fierce tiger in front of others always seemed like a pitiful kitten in front of Lin Yanqing. This version of Yu Ning annoyed Lin Yanqing deeply.
Every morning, Yu Ning would buy her breakfast or snacks for the break, filling her desk with all sorts of interesting little trinkets. Every time she returned from a trip, she would bring back surprises for Lin Yanqing.
Though annoyed, Lin Yanqing never refused. She knew that even if she did, Yu Ning would find another way to make her accept.
This time was no different. Sun Yiyi placed the snacks on the empty desk next to Lin Yanqing and reminded her to eat them.
Lin Yanqing didn’t respond.
The break passed quickly, and the first class was taught by their homeroom teacher, Wu Juan.
Usually, she would come to the classroom early to set up the equipment and chat with the students. Today, however, not only did she not arrive early, but she was also late.
Aside from their excellent academic performance, Class One was also known for its strict discipline, largely due to Wu Juan’s high standards. This was also why Yu Ning had been forced to sweep the school plaza for over half a month without a break.
Thanks to this, Yu Ning managed to rest for nearly half the class. She was awakened by a burst of applause and cheers.
As soon as she opened her eyes, Yu Ning saw a stranger in a white dress standing at the podium.
The girl had delicate features and a shy smile, her hands tightly gripping the straps of her backpack. Her eyes darted around nervously, likely due to shyness and unfamiliarity. When introducing herself, her voice was so soft that Yu Ning could barely make out the words “Shuangshuang.”
Yu Ning’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly turned to her deskmate, Gu Leyao, who had been listening with rapt attention, and asked, “What did she say her name was?”
“You’re finally awake!” Gu Leyao, an Omega, spoke in a sweet, delicate tone, every word dripping with softness. She and Yu Ning were close, and having watched Yu Ning sleep through half the class, she couldn’t help but complain, “I’ve been keeping an eye on the hallway for you this whole time, worried the principal would catch you napping during inspection.”
As one of the few in the class, aside from Sun Yiyi, who harbored no inappropriate thoughts about Lin Yanqing, Gu Leyao got along particularly well with Yu Ning.
“Thanks. Who is she? What’s her name?” Yu Ning was more eager to know the answer now.
“Oh, her? She’s a new student. I think her name is Jiang Shuangshuang.”
“Oh.”
Thank goodness her surname wasn’t Jiang. For a moment, Yu Ning had thought.
Ugh, what was she thinking? As if a novel plot could come true?
Yu Ning silently mocked herself.
“It seems there’s only one seat left. Jiang Shuangshuang, please take that seat for now.”
If Yu Ning remembered correctly, the only empty seat in the class was.
Sure enough, following Wu Juan’s gaze and hearing her clear instructions: “Please sit next to Lin Yanqing for now. I hope everyone will make our new classmate feel welcome.”
Yu Ning felt a pang of displeasure but kept silent, knowing that Lin Yanqing would surely refuse. After all, Lin Yanqing preferred to sit alone…
However, things didn’t go as Yu Ning expected. Lin Yanqing didn’t protest but silently removed a bag of snacks from the adjacent empty desk and stuffed it into her own.
Those were the snacks Yu Ning had asked Sun Yiyi to pass to Lin Yanqing.
Yu Ning felt a sour taste in her heart. If she objected to Wu Juan now, being punished with cleaning duty would be the least of her worries, what truly mattered was Lin Yanqing’s anger.
“What is she?”
“…A person?” Gu Leyao’s reply earned her a sharp glare from Yu Ning, prompting her to answer properly, “Someone that good-looking must be an Omega.”
“Where is she good-looking?” Yu Ning wasn’t jealous, just genuinely curious.
“Well… compared to you, Ningning, she’s not exactly beautiful, but she’s quite pretty compared to others.”
Gu Leyao wasn’t flattering her; she sincerely admired Yu Ning’s beauty.
Even though Yu Ning hadn’t yet presented her secondary gender, her looks were already unmatched in the entire school. Once she did present, it would be even more remarkable.
“Oh.”
Yu Ning wasn’t happy. How could she feel at ease with an Omega, whom others considered attractive, sitting next to Lin Yanqing?
The new student was more popular than expected. After all, who wouldn’t feel protective toward a delicate, fragile Omega?
As soon as class ended, a crowd gathered around Jiang Shuangshuang’s desk, bombarding her with questions: Why did she transfer in her senior year? Where was she from before? Had she ever been in a relationship? And so on.
Jiang Shuangshuang’s face flushed bright red, her eyes filled with helplessness as she stammered, “I… transferred because my family moved No, I’ve never been in a relationship”
The classmates had many questions. Yu Ning finally managed to squeeze through the crowd when she heard Lin Yanqing’s cold, detached voice: “Move aside.”
Perhaps the noise had become too much, prompting Lin Yanqing to speak up and shoo everyone away.
Silence fell instantly. The surrounding students tacitly stepped back, having forgotten in their excitement over the newcomer that Lin Yanqing disliked being around others.
“Move aside, move aside.” Yu Ning nudged the classmate blocking her way. “You’re in my way.”
The classmate tactfully stepped aside, and soon the group of students who had been gathered around scattered as Yu Ning approached.
“Look, everyone ran away as soon as you showed up,” said Duan Xiang, the class monitor sitting in front of Lin Yanqing.
Yu Ning: “…”
Duan Xiang was gentle and easy to get along with, making her one of Yu Ning’s few friends in the class.
Hearing her remark, Yu Ning grabbed her arm and pulled her up. “Get up, I need to talk to Yanqing.”
Duan Xiang had differentiated into an Alpha a few months ago, and her once bean sprout-like figure had grown taller and more robust. Yu Ning couldn’t help but feel smug when she effortlessly pulled her back. “Even becoming an Alpha hasn’t changed your weak nature.”
Ignoring her, Duan Xiang willingly moved aside to make room.
“Yanqing, come to my house after school this afternoon? My mom says she hasn’t seen you in a while.”
“Busy, can’t go.” Lin Yanqing didn’t even pause her writing or look up, her voice cool and detached.
Yu Ning wasn’t upset and replied good-naturedly, “Then come whenever you’re free. My mom misses you every day anyway, so any day works.”
At this, Lin Yanqing’s hand stilled, and she looked up to see Yu Ning smiling brightly at her, eyes curved like crescent moons. “I bought a few exercise books yesterday.”
Yu Ning glanced at the problem Lin Yanqing was working on and exclaimed, “Oh! I think I bought the same book as you. What a coincidence!”
Lin Yanqing was already familiar with her little tricks and didn’t respond, simply lowering her head to continue writing.
Seeing that class was about to start, Yu Ning pouted. Next time, she would definitely find a way to sit next to Lin Yanqing.
“Remember to eat if you’re hungry.”
Yu Ning knew Lin Yanqing often skipped breakfast in the morning, so she frequently prepared snacks and bread for her, just in case she went hungry.
From the moment Yu Ning sat in front of Lin Yanqing, she could feel a burning gaze fixed on her.
“Hello, new classmate. I’m Yu Ning, Lin Yanqing’s fiancée.”
Yu Ning emphasized the word “fiancée,” but her eyes were filled with genuine warmth and sincerity.
Lin Yanqing was used to this scene and neither confirmed nor denied it. As for Yu Ning, she was already satisfied with Lin Yanqing’s indifferent attitude.
“I-I’m Jiang Shuangshuang,” came a timid voice, full of sincerity. Before Yu Ning could say anything else, she heard a compliment, “You’re really pretty…”
Yu Ning was the type to yield to kindness but resist force. If someone was aggressive, she would be even more so, but if they were gentle, she would soften in response.
Just like now, she instantly forgot the harsh words she had planned to say and instead cleared her throat. “You’re pretty too.”
Yu Ning’s beauty and Jiang Shuangshuang’s were completely different. Yu Ning was lively and striking, giving off the impression of a clever troublemaker, while Jiang Shuangshuang was gentle and unassuming, making it easy for others to trust her.
Yu Ning wanted to say more, but the bell for class rang, forcing her to return to her seat. She secretly vowed that next time she changed seats, she would sit next to Lin Yanqing so they could whisper to each other throughout the entire class.
Halfway through the class, Lin Yanqing heard a faint growling sound from the seat next to him. He tilted his head slightly and saw Jiang Shuangshuang blushing, her eyes filled with embarrassment as she whispered timidly, “Can I buy your bread?”
Lin Yanqing was taken aback for a moment before remembering that she must have seen him putting away his snacks earlier.
After a brief pause, noticing Jiang Shuangshuang’s increasingly flustered expression, he pulled out the snack bag that Sun Yiyi had given him earlier from his desk.
Jiang Shuangshuang lowered her head, took a piece of bread from the bag, and murmured softly, “I’ll transfer the money to you.”
“No need,” Lin Yanqing replied indifferently, turning a page of his book as the teacher continued speaking.
Jiang Shuangshuang bit her lip and quietly took out the phone she had just bought yesterday. She found Lin Yanqing’s name in the class group chat she had recently been added to and sent him a friend request with the message:
“Thank you for the bread. I’d like to transfer the money to you.”
