A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 2
Yu Ning pondered for a moment. A significant reason for her current embarrassment was Su Yien’s question. She could understand why Lin Yanqing had responded the way she did after all, a public confession could cause quite a stir if it reached the principal’s ears, and that wouldn’t reflect well on anyone.
So, the real culprit here was Su Yien. And now, with this teasing remark, Yu Ning’s anger had reached its peak.
“You’re the bean sprout! Your whole family are bean sprouts!”
Su Yien probably hadn’t expected Yu Ning to suddenly lash out like this. She let out a soft laugh and said, “Oh? Quite the temper. Taking it out on me, are you?”
The crowd fell silent instantly. They couldn’t quite grasp how the conflict had shifted from Su Yien and Lin Yanqing to Su Yien and Yu Ning.
“…”
Yu Ning was speechless for a couple of seconds. Then, planting her hands on her hips, she stood directly in front of Su Yien, meeting her gaze head-on. “Let me tell you something stay away from Lin Yanqing from now on. There’s no comparison between you and her. No matter what you compare, she’s miles ahead of you.”
As a high-quality Alpha, Su Yien stood at a full 185 cm, a centimeter taller than Lin Yanqing. Yu Ning had to rise onto her tiptoes just to meet her eyes.
Su Yien found it somewhat amusing. This little one in front of her, so small and seemingly fragile, actually dared to stand in front of Lin Yanqing? Did she come across as too gentle? But Su Yien didn’t give her a hard time. Instead, she repeated the same question she’d asked earlier:
“Do you like her?”
In stark contrast to Lin Yanqing’s response, Yu Ning answered with complete openness: “Yeah, I’m her fiancee.”
Su Yien let out a long, drawn-out “Hmm,” her eyes glinting with amusement. “So young, and already your eyesight’s failing you.”
Yu Ning paid no mind to her sarcasm and spoke with utmost seriousness, “I don’t think you have any right to mock me.”
“Oh?”
“Even in this aspect, you’ve lost. Yanqing has someone who loves her, what about you?”
Su Yien scoffed. Was there really no one in the entire girls’ school who liked her? What was this girl thinking?
“Is that important?”
“It might not be important, but I just want you to know Lin Yanqing has someone who’s willing to give everything for her, someone who’s liked her for a long time, because she’s worth it. Do you have that?”
The playfulness in Su Yien’s eyes vanished, replaced by a serious expression. Then, she chuckled softly and said, “I feel like you’re just showing off.”
Yu Ning shrugged indifferently. “I just want you to know being jealous won’t help. You’ll never measure up to Lin Yanqing.”
Su Yien looked as if she’d just heard the most ridiculous joke, her eyes brimming with mockery as she murmured with a laugh, “Me? Jealous of her.”
After uttering the words “I don’t like her,” Lin Yanqing had remained silent. But now, watching the petite Yu Ning stand up for her against Su Yien, who towered over her by a full head, an inexplicable emotion stirred within her. This feeling unsettled her, and when she recalled Yu Ning’s recent actions toward the people around her, she automatically attributed this emotion to annoyance with Yu Ning. Her expression grew increasingly impatient as she abruptly pulled Yu Ning away from her toe-to-toe standoff with Su Yien.
Caught off guard by the sudden tug, Yu Ning lost her balance and swayed unsteadily. Just then, Lin Yanqing released her wrist. If not for Yu Ning’s ballet-trained sense of balance, she might have ended up flat on her face.
“Stop causing a scene.”
Lin Yanqing’s tone was heavy, brimming with impatience.
Had she been making a fuss? Yu Ning blinked, noticing Lin Yanqing’s displeased expression, and pursed her lips. If Lin Yanqing was unhappy, then she must have been causing trouble.
“Sorry.”
“Tch.”
If anyone was most hurt by Yu Ning’s sudden change in attitude, it was undoubtedly Su Yien, who had just been cornered by Yu Ning to the point of speechlessness. One moment, Yu Ning was fierce as a tigress toward her, and the next, she was as docile as a kitten in front of someone else. Anyone would feel resentful about that.
But Su Yien didn’t dwell on it. She scoffed and tossed the basketball in her hand toward Lin Yanqing, hitting her squarely in the chest. “Losers who can’t even win a game can only rely on cheap tricks to divert attention.”
Lin Yanqing’s expression remained cool and indifferent, showing no emotion.
Yu Ning finally understood that Lin Yanqing was probably in a bad mood after losing the game. Ignoring Su Yien’s insinuation that her feelings were “cheap,” she retorted disdainfully, “All you know how to do is brag. You can’t even pass your exams. Who’s the real loser here?”
Su Yien’s smile stiffened, a flicker of something flashing in her eyes before she chuckled lightly. “You’re right. To truly humiliate someone, you should target what they’re best at. Just wait and see.”
After saying this, she reached out and patted Yu Ning’s shoulder. “Thanks for the advice. In the near future, remember that you played a part in turning her into a real loser.”
Yu Ning: “…”
Yu Ning took a step back, looking at Su Yien as if she were something dirty, and casually brushed off her shoulder where Su Yien had touched her. “Filthy.”
Just then, a whistle blew the gym teacher’s signal to gather.
“Ningning, time to gather.”
Sun Yiyi, who had been watching intently from the side, finally felt her heart settle at the sound of the whistle. She had already been mentally preparing herself for how to intervene if Su Yien tried to lay a hand on Yu Ning. Thankfully, despite Su Yien’s unpleasant personality, she still had some principles and wouldn’t lay a hand on an undifferentiated child.
Sun Yiyi waved to Yu Ning, but Yu Ning turned to look at Lin Yanqing behind her. “Yanqing, we can play tennis during free activity later. Can I be on your team?”
Lin Yanqing smoothed her short hair, tying it into a small ponytail, and replied, “I already have a partner.”
“Then we can play doubles! Yiyi and I can team up, and you and.”
Yu Ning’s voice trailed off as she met Lin Yanqing’s icy gaze. She changed the subject and asked, “Were you serious about what you said earlier?”
“About what?”
“About not liking me.”
Lin Yanqing glanced toward the already assembled group and replied indifferently, “It’s just a family arrangement. You don’t have to take it too seriously.”
Yu Ning stared at her intently, searching her face for any sign of deceit. Only when she found none did she believe Lin Yanqing wasn’t lying.
Lin Yanqing, hearing no response, assumed Yu Ning had taken her words to heart and added, “It would be even better if you were willing to call it off.”
Yu Ning naturally understood that “calling it off” meant ending their engagement. Lin Yanqing thought she had made herself clear, but then she heard Yu Ning’s clear, bright voice: “That’s okay. I’ll just try harder. There’s no one else by your side anyway. Someday, you’ll come to like me.”
Lin Yanqing couldn’t understand her thought process, nor why she would say such things. But the moment he met Yu Ning’s bright, clear eyes and saw her innocent smile, his harsh words got stuck in his throat. What he intended to say turned into a simple, “Do as you please.”
Yu Ning’s smile grew even brighter. She firmly believed that nothing is impossible to a willing heart sooner or later, Lin Yanqing would come to like her.
The PE teacher, a robust Alpha standing a full 190 cm tall, noticed a few students who seemed to have ignored the whistle. He blew it again and called out, “You over there, come and line up!”
“The class monitor of Class One is on leave, so the class president will temporarily take over. The class president of Class One and the PE monitor of Class Two, go to the equipment room and fetch 20 mats and barbells, along with any other sports equipment everyone needs. Tally it up and have the class president bring people to get them.”
The class president of Class One was Lin Yanqing, and the PE monitor of Class Two was Su Yien. Worried that Lin Yanqing might struggle, Yu Ning volunteered to go with him to get the equipment. Lin Yanqing ignored her and instead called a few Alphas to help.
He must be worried about me and doesn’t want me carrying heavy things.
Lin Yanqing is so considerate, Yu Ning thought.
Pride Sun Girls’ School offered direct progression to university, and nearly every student who entered Pride Sun could advance to higher education. That was why parents fought tooth and nail to get their children into this school.
Not all students at the school were spoiled heirs; both Su Yien and Yu Ning had genuine talent and ability. For instance, Yu Ning was currently stressing about maintaining her grades to avoid being eliminated from Class One.
Sun Yiyi noticed that Yu Ning had been studying nonstop during breaks lately, with little time for leisure. She wanted to take her to the arcade after school to unwind. But as soon as Sun Yiyi started with, “After school, let’s…” Yu Ning reflexively looked up and said, “You really are my best friend!”
Just as Sun Yiyi was about to nod in agreement, Yu Ning continued, “How did you know I was going to ask you to come with me to the bookstore after school to buy books?”
“Well, actually, I ”
“No need to say more! Best friends stick together. School’s almost over, let’s pack up and go.” Yu Ning chattered while organizing her stationery. “There are more and more questions beyond the syllabus lately. I always spend half an hour on the last math problem. It’s fine usually, but if it were an exam, I definitely wouldn’t be able to solve it. That would cost me over ten points, widening the gap between me and Yanqing. Then I might not even have a chance to choose the same major as her in university.”
Sun Yiyi wanted to comfort her, to say her grades were already quite good. But the moment she heard Lin Yanqing’s name, she fell completely silent.
“I’ve finished all the practice questions I bought last time. I need to get more mock exam papers.” Yu Ning glanced at the clock. There was only one minute left before class ended, yet Sun Yiyi’s books and stationery were still scattered messily across her desk. She wasn’t even starting to pack up, just staring blankly. Yu Ning urged her, “Why are you looking at me? Hurry up and pack!”
“Okay.”
It was the peak hour for commuting and school dismissal. The streets were crowded, with most people rushing along. The ginkgo trees lining the road shed golden autumn leaves, attracting many passersby to stop and take photos. This year’s autumn foliage seemed even more vibrant than usual. Yu Ning picked up a fallen leaf from the ground and examined it carefully.
“What’s so interesting about leaves?” Sun Yiyi snatched the autumn leaf from her hand, glanced at it for a few moments, found it dull, and handed it back.
Yu Ning shrugged indifferently: “It’s the pleasure of the refined.”
Just as Sun Yiyi was about to speak, she heard Yu Ning exclaim in surprise: “Huh, when did a bookstore open here?”
