A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 18
Because of what happened in the morning, Yu Ning had been in a bad mood all day. During class, when the teacher called on her, she almost couldn’t answer the question.
After a long wait, the second-to-last class before school ended finally arrived.
As soon as the bell rang, Yu Ning tilted her head and slumped onto the desk, staring at the clock hanging above the blackboard. She sighed inwardly there was still a long self-study session ahead.
Just then, Yu Ning heard a sharp, clattering sound as someone tapped on the window beside her. The noise was grating.
Irritated by the sound, Yu Ning frowned and turned her head, only to see Su Yien’s smiling face as she waved at her.
The last time Su Yien came to find her was after school, when there weren’t many people around. But this time, it was during a break, and all their classmates were present. The noise had drawn everyone’s attention, and their gazes shifted between Yu Ning and Su Yien outside the window.
Soon, whispers began to fill the classroom. Although the voices from the back rows were hushed, Yu Ning could faintly make out their conversation.
They were discussing how she and Su Yien had gotten so close.
After all, it was common knowledge throughout the school that Lin Yanqing and Su Yien didn’t get along.
Seeing that Yu Ning hadn’t responded, Su Yien walked directly to the classroom door. Leaning against the wall, she looked at Yu Ning and said with a light laugh, “Come out. I have something for you.”
Something for her?
Yu Ning was puzzled but stood up from her seat anyway.
As Lin Yanqing’s fiancée, she could easily have ignored Su Yien.
Moreover, snubbing Su Yien might even make Lin Yanqing happy.
In the past, Yu Ning might have considered doing just that. But after getting to know Su Yien, she realized Su Yien wasn’t the kind of person she had once imagined.
Regardless of whether Su Yien had saved her or not, she shouldn’t treat her that way.
As soon as Yu Ning stepped out of the classroom, the whispers grew louder. Hearing their names repeatedly mentioned together, Sun Yiyi grinned wider than anyone else. She glanced at Lin Yanqing, who remained as composed as ever, seemingly oblivious to the commotion around him, and pursed her lips, vowing inwardly: If you don’t cherish my Ningning, one day you’ll regret it so much it’ll eat you up.
Perhaps because it was almost time for school to end, the hallway was bustling with noise. But the moment Yu Ning stepped out, she distinctly felt a two-second lull in the chatter.
Ignoring the curious glances and hushed whispers around her, Yu Ning looked at Su Yien and asked, “What is it?”
Instead of answering, Su Yien countered, “I heard it’s your birthday today. Make a wish.”
Yu Ning scoffed. She had no idea how Su Yien found out about her birthday, but making a wish?
“If I make a wish, will it come true?”
“Give it a try,” Su Yien replied, her expression serious and mysterious.
“Hmm…” Yu Ning had initially planned to make some impossible wish, but seeing Su Yien’s earnest expression, the thought vanished as quickly as it came. After a moment’s consideration, she replied, “I don’t think I have any wishes.”
“Oh, but you do,” Su Yien chuckled softly. “I heard all the teachers have a meeting next period. How about I take you out to have some fun?”
“No,” Yu Ning refused without a second thought. Although she often had a short temper and frequently got into conflicts at school, she had never really skipped class before.
“What’s the big deal? Can’t you just keep your savior company?” Su Yien’s expression already carried a hint of grievance as she said this. “Poor me, swimming in the water for so long, afraid that if I was even a little late, I’d be pulling up a corpse.”
“You said I wanted to kill myself, didn’t you? Then aren’t you just interfering? What should I thank you for?”
Su Yien: “…”
Yu Ning had only said it offhandedly. Anyway, sitting in the classroom was making her feel down, and it was the last self-study period, why not skip it?
“Are you sure all the teachers are at the meeting?”
Hearing this, Su Yien knew Yu Ning had agreed and gave a soft “Mm-hmm.”
There were still two or three minutes left before class started.
“Come with me.” The hallway was crowded, so Su Yien didn’t pull Yu Ning along, instead heading downstairs alone.
Yu Ning glanced back at the classroom, and for a moment, the impulse to let Lin Yanqing know where she was going flashed through her mind. But in the end, she suppressed it.
In the past, whenever she’d told her where she was going, Lin Yanqing never seemed to care. This time should be no different.
Besides, when she’d invited her to go to the flower market earlier, she’d refused. Clearly, she didn’t care.
As Yu Ning followed Su Yien downstairs, they ran into a classmate from Class Two, who greeted Su Yien and asked where she was going.
She heard Su Yien reply, “Hanging out with a friend from Class One.”
Friend? Hanging out?
Yu Ning pursed her lips. More like being forced to skip class under the guise of a life-saving favor.
Before they even reached the school gate, the bell for class rang.
“We can’t go out through the main gate now,” Yu Ning murmured.
If it had been between classes, they might have been able to use some clever trick to slip out through the main gate.
But now that class had started, the security guard would have already locked it.
“Wasn’t planning to go out through the main gate anyway.” Before Yu Ning could ask, Su Yien added, “You’re pretty bold.”
“Huh?” Yu Ning was puzzled. Where was she being bold?
“Skipping class and still thinking of walking right out the front gate.”
Yu Ning: “…”
Come to think of it, no matter how clever they were, the security cameras would catch them.
Autumn had arrived, and fallen leaves littered the ground.
Yu Ning followed Su Yien to a corner of the wall.
“This is the shortest one. Climb up, and you can hop over.”
Yu Ning looked at the wall, then at Su Yien.
The wall might be short for her, but for Yu Ning, it was still pretty tall. But she couldn’t just admit she was too short to climb it, so she coughed and asked:
“Why do we have to climb the wall?”
Yu Ning had heard there was a dog hole near the back gate. Wouldn’t it be easier to crawl through there?
“Climb while you still can. Who knows if you’ll be able to later.”
“What do you mean, ‘climb while you still can’? It’s not like my legs are broken.” Yu Ning muttered under her breath. “Feels like you’re cursing me.”
Su Yien didn’t say anything for a while, and Yu Ning looked at her strangely. “Are you really cursing me?”
Su Yien returned to her usual nonchalant demeanor. “You caught on?”
Yu Ning was about to retort when she heard Su Yien add, “But unfortunately, my mouth is blessed. Only the good things I say come true, never the bad.”
Might as well take it as a blessing and pretend she didn’t hear it.
“You’re dawdling. Can’t you climb up?” Su Yien saw right through her stalling and called her out directly.
“That’s not it.”
Su Yien ignored her retort and let out a scoff. “Get up.”
She had Ning Yu step on her shoulder to climb up, and with Su Yien’s help, Ning Yu finally scaled the wall.
“Don’t use the fact that you saved me to threaten me anymore. Skipping class with you counts as repaying the favor.”
The two walked along the street, where cars came and went. Since it wasn’t yet time for school or work to let out, the roads weren’t congested.
Su Yien casually hailed a taxi. Hearing Ning Yu’s words, she first pushed her into the car and gave the driver the address before replying, “Isn’t that what you wanted?”
“Huh?” Ning Yu froze for a second, as if her thoughts had been exposed, and her face suddenly grew warm. “How absurd.”
She hadn’t even told Sun Yiyi about wanting to skip class because she knew that as soon as she mentioned it, Sun Yiyi would definitely join her. But if she skipped class, Lin Yanqing would be unhappy.
Ning Yu already frequently clashed with her classmates, which displeased Lin Yanqing, but she couldn’t control her emotions. So, she avoided doing anything that would upset Lin Yanqing further.
Seeing that she wouldn’t admit it, Su Yien didn’t press further and instead closed her eyes to rest.
Ning Yu: “?”
She had expected an argument between them, but Su Yien simply fell silent.
Meanwhile, back in the classroom, a scene was unfolding that Ning Yu would never have anticipated.
Class One, which had been quietly studying, was startled by the sound of a book slamming against a desk.
Everyone looked up and saw Lin Yanqing, who calmly scanned the room before saying, “Roll call. Write down the names of anyone absent and report them to the teacher.”
Sun Yiyi, who was in the classroom, was utterly baffled.
With so few people in the class, a quick glance around would reveal who was missing.
And as luck would have it, only Ning Yu was absent.
“Why roll call now, during the last period?” Sun Yiyi spoke up.
Without even looking up, Lin Yanqing replied, “Think about the logic of what you just said.”
Sun Yiyi: “…”
Someone nearby chimed in, “It’s precisely because it’s the last period that we should take roll call.”
Before, Sun Yiyi had only thought Lin Yanqing was arrogant and rude. Now, she seriously suspected that Lin Yanqing might have something wrong with her mind.
Although skipping class for the first time only resulted in a few weeks of cleaning duty as punishment, this roll call was completely unnecessary. Wasn’t it clearly targeting Ning Yu?
Why?
Because of what happened that morning?
Or was it because Ning Yu left with Su Yien, and Lin Yanqing felt her pride was hurt? Was she unhappy?
So she resorted to this method to punish Ning Yu?
Sun Yiyi felt she had uncovered the truth.
Lin Yanqing was not only arrogant but also cold, selfish, and abusing her authority for personal revenge.
Furious, when Lin Yanqing called Ning Yu’s name, Sun Yiyi stared straight at her and repeatedly answered “here” on Ning Yu’s behalf.
Lin Yanqing gave her a cold glance and then wrote Sun Yiyi’s name on the record as well. “Aiding and abetting is equally punishable.”
Sun Yiyi: “…”
Today, Sun Yiyi was determined to make Ning Yu see Lin Yanqing’s true colors. However, no matter how many times she called Ning Yu’s phone, no one answered.
It was only when Sun Yiyi, while dialing, noticed the glowing screen of a phone inside Ning Yu’s desk that she realized Ning Yu had forgotten to bring her phone.
Ning Yu, too, only realized she had left her phone behind after she had already climbed over the school gate.
