A Happy Ending with my Fiancée's Arch-enemy - Chapter 16
“Say. That. Again.” Yu Ning’s voice was low and gritted through clenched teeth.
“Hiss ” Su Yien hadn’t expected Yu Ning to actually lay hands on her. Feeling the flesh of her arm being twisted into a knot by Yu Ning, Su Yien endured the pain and glared at the smug Yu Ning. “Yu Ning, do you even know what you’re doing?”
Light seeped through the cracks of the closet, and Su Yien saw Yu Ning tilting her head with an innocent expression, as if saying, “I don’t know, whoever feels the pain knows.”
Su Yien let out a sigh and began to wonder if she had been too lenient with Yu Ning.
Yu Ning felt a bit proud of her little trick, but Su Yien couldn’t be bothered to engage with her any further.
Although her clothes weren’t particularly absorbent to begin with and were almost dry by now, Yu Ning gradually began to feel the chill.
Su Yien glanced at her. “How foolish. Don’t you know the gaps let in drafts?”
Yu Ning pursed her lips. It was just a little wind whether it was there or not made little difference.
Suddenly, Su Yien reached out and pulled her. Yu Ning stumbled and ended up collapsing against Su Yien.
Afraid that her movements might alert someone outside, Yu Ning could only lift her head and glare at her. “What are you doing?!”
The closet was already cramped, and with Su Yien’s sudden pull, Yu Ning’s space became even more confined. Especially since Su Yien’s move had been so abrupt that she hadn’t even steadied herself.
“I don’t have any more clothes to take off.”
Su Yien had already given her jacket to Yu Ning earlier. Now, no matter how cold Yu Ning felt, there was nothing more she could do.
So, was she suggesting that getting closer would make them warmer?
“Annoying. I don’t need it,” Yu Ning muttered, trying to straighten up.
Su Yien felt she should remind Yu Ning that she was not only her savior but also the school bully everyone feared.
But seeing Yu Ning’s feigned anger, Su Yien suddenly laughed.
“Yu Yu, I think you’re blushing.”
Being caught off guard made Yu Ning flustered. It wasn’t really embarrassment she just wasn’t used to being this close to an Alpha.
And who gave her the right to call her “Yu Yu”?! Even Yan Qing had never called her that!
Watching Yu Ning frantically trying to compose herself and racking her brains for a retort, Su Yien found it oddly endearing.
Hearing Su Yien’s laughter, Yu Ning thought she was being mocked again, and her embarrassment turned to anger. “Can you stop laughing? Do you even know how ugly you look when you laugh?”
Unexpectedly, Yu Ning’s remark only made Su Yien laugh even harder.
“Suddenly, I think you’re kind of cute,” Su Yien whispered, leaning close to Yu Ning’s ear. “I might even consider letting you pursue me.”
“Heh ” Yu Ning let out a cold laugh. She had no idea where Su Yien got her confidence. “Why would I chase after you when there’s Lin Yan Qing, who’s ten times better than you?”
Su Yien’s smile faded, and she released Yu Ning, reverting to her usual nonchalant tone. “Just kidding. Anything related to Lin Yan Qing is bad luck to me, so you’d better not come chasing after me.”
Yu Ning rubbed her arm. It wasn’t that it hurt she just needed to do something to ease the awkwardness.
Hearing Su Yien’s words, Yu Ning originally wanted to say, “Who was it that showed up at Sun Yiyi’s birthday party for no reason? Who followed along to hike and visit the temple, only to complain that I bring bad luck? And where does the confidence come from to think I’d like her?”
But remembering that Su Yien had indeed saved her today, Yu Ning swallowed those words and simply replied, “Don’t worry, even if there were no one left in the world, I wouldn’t chase after you.”
Yu Ning felt her answer should satisfy Su Yien’s request.
For a moment, the two fell into silence.
After a long while, with no sound from outside, Yu Ning spoke up first. “Are you asleep?”
Su Yien glanced at her and let out an “Oh.”
Yu Ning: “?”
What was that “Oh” for? It was a question, not a statement.
When Su Yien didn’t say anything else after the “Oh,” Yu Ning nudged her. “Well, aren’t you going to answer?”
Su Yien didn’t even look at her, simply tossing out an “Mm.”
Yu Ning: “…”
What kind of person was this? Didn’t she know the rules of conversation no “Oh” or “Mm”?
Annoyed, Yu Ning glared at Su Yien. Did she plan to stay here all night?
If it came to it, they could just go out and tell the owner of the room they had borrowed it for a while, couldn’t they?
Su Yien still ignored her.
“Are you coming out or not?” Yu Ning gritted her teeth.
This time, Su Yien didn’t respond with a single word. Instead, she asked, “You want to go out now and tell them you watched their whole drama unfold?”
Yu Ning: “…”
A little later, Yu Ning saw Su Yien shift her arm and heard her say, “Move aside.”
Yu Ning pursed her lips, deciding not to argue.
Su Yien slowly opened the cabinet, glanced outside, and said, “Let’s go.”
The people outside had fallen asleep, so the two tiptoed out of the thatched hut.
Unnoticed, three hours had passed, and the sky was now filled with stars.
Walking one behind the other along the narrow path, they hadn’t paid much attention to the dense trees during the day, but at night, the path felt eerie.
However, Su Yien’s strides were naturally much longer than hers, and Yu Ning had to jog to keep up. What’s more, she could tell Su Yien was deliberately speeding up.
Was she trying to scare her? Leave her behind?
Yu Ning refused to give Su Yien the satisfaction. She quickened her pace, but no matter how fast she went, Su Yien matched her, staying just a few steps ahead.
Exhausted, Yu Ning stopped. She couldn’t go any faster. Fine, let it be. As she bent over to catch her breath, Su Yien suddenly halted and turned to look at her.
Yu Ning looked up just in time to see Su Yien’s face, backlit by the moonlight, looking much softer than usual. Standing there, gazing at her, Su Yien’s voice held a teasing tone. “Are you scared?”
Yu Ning snorted, unwilling to engage. She pushed past Su Yien and strode ahead alone.
This time, however, Su Yien didn’t speed up. Instead, she kept a pace and distance similar to Yu Ning’s, following half a meter behind.
After walking for a while, Yu Ning spotted the lights of the temple in the distance.
“Yu Ning.”
“Hmm?” Yu Ning instinctively turned to look at Su Yien.
The early autumn night wind was cold and brisk, rustling the leaves by the roadside and scattering her hair in all directions.
She heard Su Yien’s voice:
“What’s so good about her?”
Yu Ning was taken aback for a moment before realizing that the “her” Su Yien mentioned referred to Lin Yanqing.
Was it because of what she had just said?
“She’s just outstanding.”
Yu Ning felt that Lin Yanqing had far too many merits to count.
“What do you like about her?”
Yu Ning had heard this question many times before. Sun Yiyi would ask her this almost periodically.
What did she like about her.
Lin Yanqing was so exceptional, who wouldn’t like her?
Besides, wasn’t affection something inexplicable?
Why did everyone insist on asking her for a reason?
“Yu Ning? Yu Ning! Ningning!”
Hearing the calls coming from the temple, Yu Ning snapped back to reality and remembered what she had forgotten.
She had been gone for so long Yiyi must have been worried sick.
“Ningning, where did you go? I’ve been looking for you forever! I was so worried, wuwu.” Yu Ning was caught off guard as Sun Yiyi threw her arms around her in a tight hug.
Sun Yiyi wasn’t exaggerating. When the group had been ready to head down the mountain together, she realized that Yu Ning, who had said she was just taking a short walk to clear her mind, still hadn’t returned. Her phone was unreachable too. Knowing Yu Ning, she would never leave without saying goodbye something must have happened. Sun Yiyi had searched the entire temple but couldn’t find her.
“I just went down this path to take a look. There’s a really beautiful pond down there. I lost track of time. You said…”
Yu Ning turned around, intending to pull Su Yien into helping her cover the lie, only to find that Su Yien was no longer standing where she had been.
Sun Yiyi followed her gaze, not quite understanding what she meant to say, but she felt relieved now that Yu Ning was back.
“As long as you’re back, let’s head down together.”
Yu Ning glanced behind her once more, confirming that Su Yien wasn’t there, then nodded.
Maybe she had slipped away quietly.
A long while later, after Yu Ning and the others had left, Su Yien finally emerged from behind a tree.
Her expression was somewhat annoyed as she muttered to herself, “What business is it of yours, asking so many questions?”
Gazing in the direction Yu Ning had gone, she grumbled under her breath, “Little white-eyed wolf.””
When Yu Ning returned home, she took the phone from her pocket and placed it on the table. She had already tried it earlier the phone had gotten wet and wouldn’t turn on. Yu Ning then took a spare phone from the drawer and powered it on.
As she searched for Lin Yanqing’s name in her contacts, she glanced at the time. It was already past ten o’clock. She wondered if Lin Yanqing had gone to bed yet.
After a moment’s thought, she decided it wasn’t a good time to call, so she typed out a message to ask if she was still awake.
But just as she was about to hit send, Su Yien’s words suddenly echoed in her mind “What do you like about her?”
Outstanding.
Good grades, good looks weren’t those merits? Most importantly, she was Lin Yanqing.
Yu Ning was supposed to like Lin Yanqing.
Yu Ning paused, deleted the message she had typed, tossed the phone onto the bed, and lay down herself, staring blankly at the ceiling.
Yeah, why was that?
They had known each other for so long that Yu Ning couldn’t quite remember the earlier days. Her memories of Lin Yanqing were mostly from middle school, especially after they got engaged.
Yu Ning’s affection for Lin Yanqing had been etched into her very bones. It must have been love at first sight, right?
How strange, why was she suddenly overthinking things today?
It was all Su Yien’s fault, asking her such inexplicable questions and messing with her thoughts.
Yu Ning shook her head, trying to shake off the thoughts that had just crossed her mind.
She tilted her head and glanced at the phone she had tossed into the corner of the bed, reaching out to grab it. Her gaze happened to fall on a blue-covered book tucked away in the corner of the bookshelf the cheesy romance novel she had been reading last time.
Just as Yu Ning was about to reach for the book, her phone suddenly rang. She opened it to see a new friend request on WeChat.
【Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda. One story costs a hundred bucks WeChat or cash?】
Yu Ning: “…”
