A Fatal Attraction from Lawyer A - Chapter 86
Winter arrived, bringing with it an incredibly lively Spring Festival.
This was the first time Gu Yuxi had celebrated the Lunar New Year with so many people. For the first sixteen years of his life, the Spring Festival held no meaning; in the orphanage, it was merely a reminder of his lack of roots—like duckweed unable to find the shore. Even after he was sent to the Galaxy Institute, he never truly grasped the feeling of the holiday.
But this year, he finally understood the meaning of a true Spring Festival and the significance of family reunions. Because he had fallen in love with Luo Panzhi, was carrying his child, and had joined the vast Luo-Chu family.
In the grand manor, two pairs of babbling twins were permanent fixtures in the living room. Their parents were constantly busy—some frazzled from coaxing crying infants, others slumped over in exhaustion.
Mr. Luo (Luo Qingye), who possessed a wealth of parenting experience, patiently guided them on how to distinguish between different cries: whether the baby was hungry, needed a diaper change, or felt unwell. Since all four infants were roughly the same age—all about two months old during the festival—the house was often filled with a chorus of wails. Mr. Luo taught them one by one how to use the “football hold” (colic carry) to soothe the babies.
None of the children were handed over to nannies; Mr. Luo insisted on teaching the parents to handle everything themselves. This was especially true for Yan Lu and Luo Yuchu, as their Omegas were still in the recovery phase, leaving the Alphas primarily responsible for the newborns.
“Only by raising them yourselves these few months will you truly understand how much you should love your Omegas,” Luo Qingye said as he placed a calmed Beiheng back into the stroller. He then glanced at Luo Panzhi and Gu Yuxi. “You too, Youpan. You’ll have to raise this little one yourself. No matter how busy you are, I expect you to be hands-on until the child can walk.”
Luo Panzhi put an arm around Gu Yuxi’s shoulders, carefully memorizing his father’s techniques. “I definitely will.”
Once the four babies were finally coaxed into a nap, the adults finally had time to prepare the New Year’s Eve dinner. In the Luo-Chu household, Omegas traditionally stayed out of the kitchen, but this year was an exception, with the addition of the pregnant Gu Yuxi.
“Children, Happy New Year.”
The head of the family, Chu Yicheng, raised his glass. Luo Qingye smiled and joined him in the toast.
“Dad, Father, Happy New Year!” everyone chorused, raising their glasses.
Among the crowd, Gu Yuxi’s glass was the only one filled with juice. He eyed Luo Panzhi’s wine glass longingly and nudged him with his elbow.
Luo Panzhi looked at him, his eyes asking what was wrong.
“Can I have just one sip?” Gu Yuxi whispered.
Luo Panzhi didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He shook his head. “No.”
Gu Yuxi’s expression went blank, looking at Luo with a resentful gaze. Luo Panzhi laughed helplessly, dipped his chopstick into the wine, and held it out. “Here.”
“Are you mocking me?” Gu Yuxi pushed the chopstick away.
“Then I’m taking it back?” Luo Panzhi made a move to retract the chopstick, only for Gu Yuxi to grab his hand a second later. The man leaned down and licked the red wine off the tip of the chopstick like a greedy cat.
Luo Panzhi smiled. Gu Yuxi still looked unsatisfied, but he knew he had to be patient. In just a few more months, he could have whatever he wanted. He just had to endure a little longer.
“Old rules—we need a new family photo this year,” Luo Qingye said, setting down his glass. He looked at Luo Panzhi and Gu Yuxi. “Youpan, Yuxi, should we wait until the little guy is born?”
Luo Panzhi shook his head. “I think we should take one before he’s born, and another after the full-month celebration. That way, it shows my complete journey from being a lonely bachelor to falling in love, getting married, and having a child. Otherwise, I’ll look out of place next to Zuogu and Xiaoyu; they’ve been in the photos for years, and I’ve been the ‘center-stage bachelor’ for too long.”
Chu Guzhi and Luo Yuchu couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
Luo Panzhi looked at them seriously. “What are you laughing at? Is it that impressive to get married and have kids before me? I have it all now too!”
Chu Guzhi and Luo Yuchu shared a look and began to applaud in perfect harmony. “Congratulations on successfully escaping bachelorhood.”
Luo Panzhi was speechless, but seeing Gu Yuxi laughing happily, he let it go. With a cold snort, he leaned his head against his “wife’s” shoulder like he was aggrieved. “Baby, they’re making fun of me.”
Gu Yuxi let him lean and act spoiled, his eyes curving into crescents. “You are pretty funny.”
Luo Panzhi looked at him with a wounded expression, making the whole family laugh. After dinner, the large family sat in the same spots they had occupied for over twenty years and took a new photo. This time, Luo Panzhi wasn’t alone; Gu Yuxi stood by his side.
The moment was frozen in time. The portrait of seven people on the wall was now replaced by one with thirteen—plus one still in the womb.
The pregnancy entered the 28th week—seven months. Gu Yuxi was no longer as picky with his food, and his physical condition had stabilized significantly, which was the only reason Luo Panzhi allowed him to keep going to the office.
However, one symptom became very prominent: lethargy. No matter how early he went to bed, he was hit with waves of sleepiness during the day. He simply couldn’t get enough rest. He even found himself nodding off during meetings.
In the conference room, Luo Panzhi was giving an annual report on the international market for the BO-Sexual Inducer and discussing new trade models. Since it involved foreign trade, lawyers were required to be present to discuss the legalities.
A PowerPoint presentation was on the large screen, and only the back row of lights was left on. Everyone was focused on the report; no one noticed Gu Yuxi in the back row, head propped up on his hand, nearly slamming his chin onto the desk—except for Luo Panzhi, who had been watching him from the front the whole time.
“The commercialization of the BO-Inducer is accelerating globally. Many foreign pharmaceutical companies have established large-scale cooperation with Galaxy Group…”
Luo Panzhi continued his report while walking down from the podium. His leather shoes clicked steadily on the floor. The managers thought he was walking down to check their notes and typed furiously, completely unaware of his real destination.
Luo Panzhi walked to the very back where a certain someone was “fishing” for sleep. Gu’s head bobbed lower and lower, his forehead inches from the table. Xu Wen, sitting next to him, finally realized Lawyer Gu was asleep and was about to nudge him when he saw the CEO stand by Gu’s side. Luo Panzhi reached out and placed his palm face-up on the desk.
Luo’s palm caught Gu Yuxi’s forehead just before it hit the wood. Seeing that Gu was truly deep in sleep, Luo simply stood there, guarding him, while continuing the presentation without skipping a beat:
“…Since the BO-Inducer+ acts as a new component to suppress secondary differentiation defects, clinical trials for both agents are part of Galaxy Group’s global development plan. Supply will commence upon regulatory approval.”
Seeing that Gu Yuxi still hadn’t woken up, Luo Panzhi simply sat down beside him. He used his palm to lift Gu’s head and then tucked it onto his own arm, allowing Gu to use it as a pillow. With his other hand, he clicked through the slides, his voice calm and steady.
“Risk assessment for the new trade model… we’ll discuss that once Lawyer Gu wakes up.”
Xu Wen watched, dumbfounded. He had once again witnessed the extent of Luo Panzhi’s devotion. This wasn’t just doting; this was “limitless indulgence.” Everyone knew how strict “Little Mr. Luo” was about rules—especially meeting etiquette. You had to be early, you had to take notes. Who would dare sleep during his meeting?
Only Lawyer Gu. This Alpha was the sole exception to every rule Luo Panzhi had ever made.
The managers in the front rows eventually realized the CEO had moved to the back. When they stole glances over their shoulders, they saw their boss conducting the meeting with one arm serving as a pillow for his sleeping lover. Work and love, perfectly balanced.
It was quite the stimulus for the staff. While lower-level employees rarely saw the two together, the middle and upper management saw them every day. Since the pregnancy progressed, they were practically inseparable. Originally, Gu Yuxi was supposed to speak on the risks of the new trade model, but he had fallen asleep halfway through.
Luo Panzhi spoke for as long as Gu Yuxi slept. When the report was nearly finished and Gu showed no signs of waking, Luo decided to wrap it up. He had overestimated Gu’s stamina; he should have let him sleep in the office.
He could have let another lawyer handle the risk assessment, but he knew Gu Yuxi would be furious if his work was handed off to someone else without his permission.
“Meeting adjourned,” Luo Panzhi said, turning off the projector. “Don’t push your chairs back. Walk out quietly. Lawyer Gu is still sleeping.”
The managers picked up their laptops and tablets and tiptoed out, one by one, like they were walking through a minefield. Luo Panzhi looked at Xu Wen and whispered, “Xu Wen, go buy a strawberry cake for me.”
“Yes, Mr. Luo.”
“Any other tasks this afternoon?”
“No, just a meeting with the CEO of Shangcheng International regarding the West City land plot.”
Luo Panzhi nodded and waved him out. Xu Wen left and carefully closed the door. The room fell silent, save for the steady breathing of the man on Luo’s arm.
Luo Panzhi propped up his own head and watched Gu Yuxi. He traced the lines of Gu’s face—even with the pregnancy, he hadn’t gained weight anywhere except for his growing belly. Thinking of the four babies at home, he felt a surge of anticipation for his own.
But as the due date drew closer, his anxiety grew. Gu Yuxi, on the other hand, remained stubborn, dragging himself to work every day to maintain his Alpha pride. Luo Panzhi could only smile and protect that pride.
“…Mhm?”
After an unknown amount of time, Gu Yuxi blinked his eyes open. He found himself staring directly into the deep, dark eyes of the man inches away. He froze for a few seconds, disoriented. Then, feeling the arm under his head, he sat up abruptly. He reflexively wiped the corner of his mouth and looked around the empty room.
“What??” He stammered. “Weren’t we in a meeting?”
“Woken up?” Luo Panzhi rubbed his numb arm, a smile playing on his lips.
Gu Yuxi’s eyes widened in horror. “They all saw me sleeping?”
Luo Panzhi gave a playful “mhm.”
The thin-skinned Alpha-parent-to-be turned red to the tips of his ears. The thought of everyone watching him sleep during a professional meeting was mortifying. He pinched Luo’s arm in frustration. “You should have woken me up! Why did you let me sleep on your arm? It’s so embarrassing! People will laugh at me.”
Luo Panzhi caught his hand, his gaze full of adoration. He stroked Gu’s cheek, which still had a faint red mark from being pressed against his arm. “Who would dare? I’ll fire them.”
Gu Yuxi’s temper softened slightly. “…That’s going a bit far.”
“You’re angry, aren’t you? I’m just giving you a way to vent,” Luo laughed.
Gu Yuxi shook his head. “No. According to the Labor Contract Law, if a company terminates a contract without cause, they must pay economic compensation. It’s not cost-effective.”
“So they won’t dare say a word.”
“But it’s bad for my image. Next time, wake me up. Actually, there won’t be a next time; it’s just been so hard to stay awake lately. I’ll be fine once the baby is born.”
Luo Panzhi smiled even wider at Gu’s serious attempt to justify himself. “What are you afraid of? You’re Little Mr. Luo’s man. You’re the CEO’s spouse. Even if you brought a pillow and blanket and slept on the conference table, no one would dare complain.”
Gu Yuxi gave him a deadpan look. “That’s not funny.”
Luo Panzhi laughed and pinched his cheek. “You get cuter every day of this pregnancy. You’re killing me.”
“I am not cute.”
“I bought strawberry cake. Want some?”
Gu Yuxi’s eyes instantly lit up. He forgot his embarrassment in a heartbeat. “Yes.”
“Then let’s go, Boss,” Luo Panzhi said, leading him out with an arm around his shoulders. “Xu Wen already picked it up.”
“You actually guessed I wanted cake.”
“Of course. Who am I? I’m the fly on the wall of your heart.”
“So, what’s for dinner tonight?”
“You haven’t even had lunch and you’re thinking about dinner?”
“I’m just asking.”
“Whatever you want, I’ll cook it.”
“I don’t want your cooking. I want the Yuehang Airline meal—the creamy beef tenderloin pasta.”
