- Chapter 13 - The Dangerous Beauty
This topic had jumped so abruptly that it defied all logic.
Yu Mianfeng drew his sidearm without hesitation and pressed it against Ke Cheng’s lower abdomen. However, Ke Cheng didn’t even flinch, seemingly determined to get an answer from him.
They were in the tense aftermath of an assassination attempt. If he fired this shot, he would undoubtedly end up in an interrogation room… and the final exam for the military academy’s theory course was tomorrow. Yu Mianfeng didn’t want to miss it.
Yu Mianfeng frowned, recalling what Chen Xiulan had warned him about.
“Don’t you hate homosexuals? And Alpha ODS (Obsessive Disorder/Sexual arousal issues)?” he asked.
He didn’t voice the rest of his thought. Simply put, the man had a sex addiction.
Ke Cheng clicked his tongue. “How do you know everything? Then do you know…”
Before Ke Cheng could finish, the Beta caught him off guard, seized his wrist, and twisted it sharply. Even for someone like Ke Cheng, by the time he regained his senses, he realized he had already been subdued and pressed onto the seat by Yu Mianfeng.
The boy’s knee was pinned against his throat.
A dangerous beauty; a poisonous flower growing on a high cliff.
Ke Cheng took a breath and suddenly laughed. Just as he was about to speak, the rear car door was pulled open.
Yuan Hechu appeared before them. Even he, who was usually unflappable, looked somewhat astonished at the sight.
“What is going on?” Yuan Hechu asked.
Yu Mianfeng slowly eased the pressure he was applying, his gaze carrying a trace of displeasure. “He struck first.”
Under Yuan Hechu’s scrutinizing gaze, Ke Cheng smirked and climbed to his feet.
“Just a joke.”
It was a tacit admission that he had been the one to provoke things.
Ke Cheng exited from the side, walked around the car, and went to take the driver’s seat. Generally, only Yuan Hechu’s closest confidants, such as his adjutant Ke Cheng or a few other officers of slightly lower rank, were allowed to drive for him.
Yuan Hechu pressed a button, and the partition between the front and back seats rose slowly, turning the back seat into an independent, private little world.
“I’m taking you to the hospital for a check-up now, then I’ll send you home afterward.” Yuan Hechu said slowly. “It’s all at your father’s request.”
Yu Mianfeng knew his body was fine, but to avoid suspicion, he had to agree. He couldn’t let anyone find out.
Naturally, the hospital didn’t find anything.
Of course, the System was a higher-order creation; its existence could not be observed by the people of this small world. Yu Mianfeng sat on the hospital bed, watching Yuan Hechu in the corridor outside the glass window as he took several calls in succession.
When speaking with others, Yuan Hechu had a habit of pacing. Just as he was about to walk out of Yu Mianfeng’s field of vision, he suddenly turned his head to look at Yu Mianfeng, and their eyes met briefly.
Yu Mianfeng blinked.
Yuan Hechu was steady, possessing a magical, reassuring aura. He nodded at him before lowering his head again, continuing his conversation with someone on the other end of the communicator.
…Strange.
Yu Mianfeng withdrew his gaze.
The debate in front of him still hadn’t yielded any results. These doctors, who were the top experts in their respective fields, were arguing endlessly about his test results.
The test results were perfectly normal.
Everything being normal was, ironically, the strangest and worst outcome. In a world where medical technology was so advanced, even they couldn’t diagnose the cause of a simple fainting spell. The doctors seemed to want to perform more in-depth tests, which meant it wouldn’t be a short process. Knowing that no tests would ever yield any results, Yu Mianfeng waved his hand, signaling there was no need.
Under the doctors’ hesitant gazes, he pulled back the covers, intending to leave the bed.
“I’m fine. There’s no need to continue the exams.”
Yu Mianfeng said, pressing against the edge of the bed and declining the nurse’s offer of support. The doctors wore troubled expressions; none of them dared to make the final call. If they let him leave now and something went wrong later… The Yu family had invited them here with a fortune, and they naturally had to weigh if they were even qualified to accept such a “gift.”
Just as they were agonizing over this, the large doors were pushed open.
Yuan Hechu strode in. He scanned the room, his target clear, and marched toward the center of the crowd. The doctors consciously moved aside, clearing a path for him.
Yu Mianfeng was looking for his shoes and didn’t turn his head, only hearing the sound of hurried footsteps. At this moment, Yu Mianfeng wasn’t wearing the clothes from the banquet, but a thin, flimsy hospital gown he had changed into for the exam.
The hospital bed was very high; he had to lean his body forward just so his toes could touch the shoes nearby. Consequently, Yuan Hechu, who had hurried over to check on him, saw him immediately.
The boy was dressed thinly, hunched over, extending a leg, his lower body covered only by trousers, revealing his ankles. The skin shown was fair almost bloodless making one worry about his health.
But there were other things that were more worrying.
The boy’s feet were tensed, his toes hooked, pulling the shoes closer to his body. As he leaned forward, the collar of the loose hospital gown hung open.
Standing at Yuan Hechu’s height, it was easy to see the two protrusions caused by the movement and the breeze—a pale pink shade, exceptionally conspicuous against the deathly pale skin.
Yu Mianfeng had just barely stepped into his shoes and was about to turn his head to look toward Yuan Hechu’s direction when a warm coat suddenly fell from the sky, shrouding his body. It must have been someone else’s clothing, still carrying their body heat, which was transferred to Yu Mianfeng.
Yu Mianfeng stared at his own bare feet and didn’t turn around. He subconsciously grabbed the collar, and just as he was about to throw it off, he heard a familiar voice.
“It’s cold here. Put it on.” Yuan Hechu said, his tone firm and indisputable.
Yu Mianfeng paused, involuntarily noticing the temperature in the climate-controlled examination room. He remembered that, just now, several of the doctors even with their full gear had beads of sweat on their foreheads.
Perhaps it was because he was dressed too thinly…?
But he wasn’t that frail. However, Yuan Hechu’s decision was clearly not to be resisted. A moment later, Yu Mianfeng’s hand, which was holding the collar, was gently moved aside. Yuan Hechu leaned down and personally buttoned the coat for him.
The two were extremely close, just like the day they first met; the male side character leaned down slightly, just as he had when he sprayed the pheromone blocker on him. The man who appeared so domineering in his actions was, in truth, more gentle and considerate than anyone else.
Yu Mianfeng suddenly stopped hearing the voices of the medical staff behind him.
The Marshal personally buttoning the coat for the Yu family’s young heir this scene, which was so bizarre it felt almost chilling, left the people in the room in a moment of stunned silence.
Yu Mianfeng lowered his eyes, not looking at Yuan Hechu’s expression above him. In truth, he felt quite surprised as well.
After buttoning the coat, Yuan Hechu acted as if nothing had happened, turning to question the doctors about his condition, leaving Yu Mianfeng sitting alone in the silence, as if what had just occurred was merely a habitual action.
The coat still held the other man’s warmth. Looking at the style, it wasn’t military uniform it had to be Yuan Hechu’s private clothing, refined in every detail. Only in these minor, trivial matters did one recall that Yuan Hechu, too, had been born into nobility.
It really is much warmer. Yu Mianfeng thought.
He bent down to continue putting on his shoes. When he leaned over, the coat’s sleeves nearly hung down to his feet. Fortunately, he straightened up in time, reached his hand out from beneath the hem, caught the bundle of fabric, and rubbed it with his fingers, feeling the texture of the material.
After putting on his shoes, Yu Mianfeng pondered.
Does this count as a failed mission? We’re getting too close. Yu Mianfeng asked slowly in his heart.
[It does not.] The System replied.
He had received an unexpected answer. Yu Mianfeng looked thoughtful.
Yuan Hechu seemed genuinely concerned about his health, questioning the doctors for a long time about his condition. When facing outsiders, the dominance of a man accustomed to being in power was fully displayed, perhaps this was how the Federal Marshal usually appeared to others.
Gentle, firm, composed, and in full control of the situation.
The doctors described Yu Mianfeng’s condition—naturally, without any mention of the skin hunger disorder, which was only known to the Yu family’s private doctor, who was not here at the moment. The medical staff had been extremely careful to avoid physical contact during the exam, assuming it was just the young master’s personal preference.
After learning that there was nothing wrong with Yu Mianfeng’s health, Yuan Hechu still insisted on sending him home.
Yu Mianfeng couldn’t push back.
This time, Yuan Hechu drove himself, and Yu Mianfeng sat in the passenger seat. There were only the two of them in the car. For some reason, Ke Cheng hadn’t been on the return trip perhaps he had been assigned another mission and had left.
The atmosphere in the car was inexplicable; neither of them was a warm personality. Yuan Hechu lowered his eyes and discussed some matters regarding the Capital Military Academy with him.
While responding to him, Yu Mianfeng pondered the events of the day.
Doing these things right under Yuan Hechu’s nose was truly thrilling. As the capital’s most notorious and unruly noble, Yu Mianfeng had helped others carry out a shooting case right under Yuan Hechu’s watch. He put all his heart into this, guessing with pleasure that the target should be dead by now.
Yu Mianfeng didn’t intend to have any further contact with Yuan Hechu… sometimes, close-range ideological exchange meant danger.
He was the evil villain in everyone’s eyes; Yu Mianfeng didn’t want his plans to fail due to any misunderstandings.
As long as everything went smoothly, that was enough.
When that time came, would this righteous Federal Marshal shoot him dead with his own hands?
The Beta thought aimlessly.
