- A Beauty in the 80s Goes on a Blind Date with Her Child, Captivating the Military Compound
- Chapter 98 - I Will Never Leave You in This Lifetime
Since things had come to this, there was no longer any need for her to be coy.
She suddenly burst into a smile, her eyes hiding an entire brilliant galaxy. “We’ll have it. Of course we’ll have the wedding!”
He lowered his head, his nose inching a fraction closer to hers. “Then… do you still want a divorce?”
Sisi Shen shook her head like a rattle. “No more divorce!”
“As long as you do not abandon me, I, Sisi Shen, swear that I will never leave you in this lifetime!”
Chengfeng Gu curled his lips. With the sweet scent of her breath lingering around him, the heavy stone in his heart finally hit the ground. He reached out and adjusted the scarf around her neck.
“Then… let’s go home!”
Throughout the walk back, Chengfeng Gu held Sisi Shen’s hand tightly, never letting go for a single second. Sisi’s heart was in a state of upheaval, like a small deer crashing around inside her chest. Her face was flushed, and she smiled like a shy new bride. Her heart felt so sweet that she couldn’t help but keep laughing to herself.
When they arrived home, Hongying Xu was holding Niuniu in her arms, coaxing her.
“I’m so sorry, Niuniu. Grandma didn’t watch you well enough…” Hongying Xu’s lips were actually purple from the scare she’d had; she held the child with a death grip.
Niuniu adorably nuzzled her head against her grandma’s chest, her tiny hands reaching up to wipe the tears from the old woman’s face.
“Grandma, don’t cry. It’s Niuniu’s fault. Niuniu ran away, I’m sorry…”
Niuniu didn’t fully understand the concept of guilt, but seeing her grandma so sad made her sad too. Her nose felt itchy, and her eyes felt like they “needed to pee.”
“Mom!” Sisi Shen called out softly.
Hongying Xu looked up. Seeing Sisi Shen and Chengfeng Gu returning hand-in-hand, she suddenly felt like something was different between the two of them, though she couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was.
“Is the matter settled?” Hongying Xu asked.
When Wenhui Li had brought her own child back earlier, she had given a rough explanation of what had happened. Sisi and Chengfeng had gone to the Art Troupe to find the culprit.
Sisi Shen nodded. “Don’t worry, that person has already received the punishment she deserved.”
Hongying Xu finally let out a long breath, then spat toward the door. “Those black-hearted scoundrels… just wait until I deal with them tomorrow!”
Sisi knew she couldn’t stop her mother-in-law, so she let it be, only reminding her not to go too far.
“Don’t you worry, this old lady knows where to draw the line!” Hongying Xu said through gritted teeth.
Sisi wasn’t particularly worried about that. In fact, thinking about it, having an “evil mother-in-law” in the eyes of the world wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Seeing her mother, Niuniu struggled out of Hongying Xu’s arms and threw herself into Sisi’s embrace.
“Mommy, I’m sorry…” Niuniu mumbled her apology with her little pouty mouth.
Sisi’s arms felt heavy as she took in the soft, doughy little bundle. She felt a sense of “lost and found” relief. “Niuniu, you scared Mommy to death… promise Mommy you’ll never sneak out again, okay?”
Niuniu had certainly learned her lesson this time; she wouldn’t dare run off again. “I’m sorry…”
Because Niuniu had been frightened that evening, Sisi stayed with her until she fell asleep. Once the child was out, Sisi noticed the lights were still on in the main room, so she threw on a coat and walked out.
Under the light, Chengfeng Gu and Hongying Xu were sitting around the brazier with their backs to her. They were writing and calculating something, clearly in the middle of deep planning.
“You’re both still up?” Sisi asked with concern.
Chengfeng looked up. Seeing it was Sisi, the tenderness in his eyes became almost palpable. “Why are you wearing so little? Be careful not to catch a cold!”
Sisi tucked her coat closer. “It’s enough. The house isn’t cold.”
At that moment, Hongying Xu put down her pen and beckoned her over. “Sisi! Chengfeng and I are discussing your wedding!”
This was a major event and had to be done right! With time being tight and the task heavy, they had to plan everything out in advance.
“I actually wanted to ask you—are there any specific customs back at your home for weddings?” Hongying Xu asked.
Sisi Shen shook her head. To be honest, she didn’t know much about customs; since her parents were no longer around, she preferred to keep things as simple as possible.
“Alright then, we’ll do it according to the customs here!” Hongying Xu closed her notebook and stood up energetically. “Starting tomorrow, I’ll begin preparing everything. Then I’ll call his two older sisters and tell them to come to Jiangcheng to help out.”
Two older sisters? Sisi’s heart grew nervous again. Would that be too much trouble for them?
Chengfeng Gu saw the slight furrow in her brow and knew she was overthinking things again. “Don’t worry, my two sisters aren’t very busy at the end of the year. Every year they go to my mother’s house for the New Year anyway. This year, we’ll just have them stay in Jiangcheng!”
Sisi knew they had already decided, so she didn’t have the heart to decline. “Alright then. But our house is so small; where will everyone stay? I don’t want to mistreat them.”
Her words reminded the two of them that the house truly couldn’t hold that many people.
“What’s there to fear? Isn’t Chengfeng’s aunt living here? Changmei bought a house for her son; at worst, some of us can stay there.”
Sisi wanted to say more, but Chengfeng gave her a subtle shake of the head. “Let her be. She’ll handle it.”
Hongying Xu wanted to say something else, but seeing her son staring intently at Sisi, she immediately let out a huge yawn. “Well… it’s late. I’m going to sleep with Niuniu. You two take your time talking, but don’t stay up too late. When you’re done, hurry back to bed and get to work on giving me a big, fat grandson!”
“This…” Sisi’s face felt like it was boiling again.
After Hongying Xu left, only Sisi and Chengfeng remained in the large living room. Looking at the quilts drying outside and remembering how she had clung to Chengfeng the night before begging for a kiss, Sisi sighed softly. “Tonight… are you still coming into the room to sleep?”
Chengfeng Gu nodded without a second’s hesitation. “Of course!”
After washing up, the two of them lay in the bed, one at each end under the covers. Sisi gazed up at the dark ceiling, feeling the warmth radiating from Chengfeng’s body. She couldn’t help but whisper, “Are you asleep?”
A deep, husky voice soon rang out in the darkness. “Not yet.”
“What… do you want to say?”
Sisi clutched the quilt, as if afraid of being discovered. She quickly closed her eyes. “Nothing…”
Chengfeng knew his girl had something on her mind, so he propped himself up on his elbows. “If you want to ask something, just ask.”
Sisi heard the movement in the dark and knew Chengfeng was sitting up in the cold air waiting for her. She didn’t have the heart to let him stay like that. “I’ll tell you, okay? Just lie back down so you don’t catch a cold.”
Only then did Chengfeng shrink back under the covers.
Sisi gathered her courage and spoke. “That… what exactly happened between you and your childhood sweetheart back then? I heard you came to Lin County because of her.”
In the darkness, a certain someone’s lips curled up very high. “Sisi, are you… curious about me?”
Sisi covered her burning face. “If you say so, then yes!”
Chengfeng’s mood soared inexplicably. “Back then… I did indeed get into a fight because of her. However, it wasn’t what you think.
