- Chapter 58 - Gu Chengfeng Swiftly Makes the Bed
Shen Sisi lowered her gaze, her eyes carrying a hint of scrutiny.
Suddenly, a figure rushed out from the nearby darkness. “Regiment Commander Gu, you’re finally back…”
Gu Chengfeng’s dark eyes instantly clouded over, and the corners of his mouth tightened. It was Chen Wenzhong’s orderly, Xiao Zhou—his full name was Zhou Zheng, which was quite easy to remember.
“Xiao Zhou?” Gu Chengfeng met his gaze with a cold, indifferent stare.
Zhou Zheng felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up under that look. He quickly explained, “Regiment Commander Gu, these are gifts bought by Regiment Commander Chen to apologize to you and your family.”
Even though Chen Wenzhong was his superior, Gu Chengfeng was in no mood to grant him face today! He was still fuming; no apology would suffice. Without even glancing at the pile of gifts, he spoke in a rigid, icy tone. “Take them back. Tell him I don’t need them.”
Zhou Zheng was sweating profusely from anxiety. This was the mission Regiment Commander Chen had assigned him, a direct order to deliver these to Gu Chengfeng no matter what.
Seeing them open the courtyard gate, Zhou Zheng blurted out in desperation, “Regiment Commander Gu, don’t you understand what kind of man Regiment Commander Chen is? This whole thing has nothing to do with him; it’s all his wife stirring up trouble. You can’t take your anger out on Regiment Commander Chen…”
In Zhou Zheng’s eyes, everything was Yang Qiuxia’s fault and had nothing to do with Regiment Commander Chen, who he felt was being wrongly blamed.
Before Gu Chengfeng could speak, Shen Sisi couldn’t help but interject. “A husband and wife are one unit. Why come here now to claim they are separate? Earlier, it wasn’t that I didn’t give her a chance. Regiment Commander Chen was present then. After going home, he failed to educate his wife or stop her bad behavior; that is his negligence as a husband.”
Shen Sisi’s words were powerful and resonant, striking Zhou Zheng’s heart word by word. He found himself unable to argue. Thinking back, Regiment Commander Chen truly hadn’t done much ideological work on this matter. They were indeed in the wrong.
“But this time, Regiment Commander Chen is serious,” Zhou Zheng blurted out. “He’s sent his children back to their hometown. Just now, he went to the hospital and was making a scene about getting a divorce. I think this time… he means it!”
As a mother, Shen Sisi naturally understood the pain involved. But she truly could not sympathize with Yang Qiuxia. If children stayed with someone like her, they would eventually learn bad habits. As for the divorce… that was their business as a couple and had nothing to do with her!
Beside her, Zhou Zheng’s sweat fell like rain. “Regiment Commander Gu, Sister-in-law Shen, please show some mercy and accept Regiment Commander Chen’s apology!”
Shen Sisi looked at this young, naive face and wondered how this brain had managed to become an orderly. “Comrade, please get this straight. They were the ones who hurt me and disrupted my family’s harmony. Why does it sound like we are the ones bullying them? If we don’t agree or forgive, we become the villains?”
Her rebuttal left Zhou Zheng speechless. He swore he didn’t have any hidden agendas; he just thought Regiment Commander Chen was a good man and wanted to help turn a big problem into a small one.
Gu Chengfeng’s fists were clenched, but seeing Shen Sisi resolve the situation with a few sentences, he couldn’t help but be impressed. “Enough. Take your things and go,” Gu Chengfeng issued his final ultimatum.
No matter how much Zhou Zheng pleaded, they didn’t give him a single kind look. They didn’t even glance at the gifts before closing the courtyard gate. Finally, the world was quiet.
Shen Sisi looked worried. “Will you get into trouble for me offending your superior like that?”
Gu Chengfeng’s lips curled in a nonchalant smirk. “They are the ones who should be in trouble!”
Seeing her brow still furrowed, he used his warm thumbs to gently smooth the creases on her forehead. “Don’t worry. I’ll handle the outside affairs. Instead of worrying about my superior giving me a hard time, you should think about how we’re going to get through this…”
He tilted his chin toward Xu Hongying, who was bustling around the courtyard. “She’s here to supervise our ‘baby-making,’ remember?”
A faint blush instantly colored Shen Sisi’s cheeks, and she instinctively looked away. It was one thing for Xu Hongying to say it, but why did Gu Chengfeng have to say it to her face too?
“Gu Chengfeng, stop teasing. If we never have a child, will your mother live here forever?”
Gu Chengfeng arched an eyebrow. His mother seemed unreliable, but in truth, once she set her mind on something, not even ten oxen could pull her back. “At this point, we can only play along with her plan…”
With that, Gu Chengfeng walked calmly into the house and began making the bed. Shen Sisi watched his brisk movements as he headed straight for the bedroom. Why… why does it feel like he’s actually looking forward to it?
It must be my imagination! she thought.
Shen Sisi didn’t stay idle either. Carrying Niuniu, she went to the kitchen to boil water for washing up. All along the way, Niuniu clutched the jade pendant on her chest as if she was afraid someone would steal it.
“Come, Niuniu, Mommy will help you take the jade off.”
Niuniu pouted her little mouth. “No!”
She had always been gentle and obedient, but she hadn’t been in Jiangcheng long before she started becoming spoiled and headstrong.
“Be good. This doesn’t belong to us…” Realizing this was too abstract for a child, Sisi tried to speak in a way Niuniu could understand. “Niuniu, this pendant is very expensive. It’s jade; it will break if it gets bumped. You don’t want the gift Grandma gave you to be ruined, right? Come, Mommy will keep it safe for you.”
She knelt down, her voice as gentle as a breeze, but the clever little girl didn’t fall for it. Niuniu’s large, clear eyes darted around. “Mommy, Grandma said this was for me, so it’s mine. I’ll protect it. I won’t let it break.”
Afraid the pendant would be snatched away, Niuniu tucked the jade into her shirt with her tiny hands. Shen Sisi truly didn’t know what to do with her. The little girl hadn’t grown much in height, but she was certainly getting smarter.
Since the child truly loved it, Sisi stopped forcing the issue. She just wondered how much the jade was worth; she would have to give the money to Gu Chengfeng later, considering it as her buying the piece.
Soon, the stove was hot. Shen Sisi boiled a large pot of water. After a quick wash for herself and Niuniu, she left the rest for Xu Hongying. The older woman had spent the morning chasing Yang Qiuxia with a manure brush; she still smelled a bit.
The family took turns washing. By the end, there was no hot water left, so Gu Chengfeng took a cold shower as usual. At the thought of Shen Sisi being “all over him” last night, his blood boiled, and he nearly lost his composure.
The cold water poured over his head, temporarily suppressing his stray thoughts. A cheerful whistle escaped his lips. He finished his shower in a hurry, making sure he smelled clean and fresh before pushing open the bedroom door with great anticipation.
As soon as he walked in, he was stunned.
