- A Beauty in the 80s Goes on a Blind Date with Her Child, Captivating the Military Compound
- Chapter 12 - Hurry and Have a Son for Him
Shen Sisi lay in bed, tossing and turning all night.
Gu Chengfeng was being mysterious, and her uncle was being evasive and secretive.
Her intuition told her that the two of them conspiring in the living room couldn’t have been a good thing.
She had a vague guess but wasn’t certain, and she felt so flustered. Her tossing and turning was a bit too much, and she accidentally woke up Niu Niu.
Niu Niu squirmed restlessly in the blanket, muffling her head and coughing violently a few times, a heart-wrenching cough.
“Mama… it hurts…”
Shen Sisi’s heart ached in response. She reached out and pulled her into her arms.
Niu Niu curled into a little ball, desperately absorbing the warmth from her mother’s body. As she smelled the familiar scent, her hunched back gradually relaxed.
Shen Sisi gently patted her back, humming a soothing lullaby. “Sleep… sleep… my dear baby…”
Little children fall asleep easily, and soon, Niu Niu was in dreamland again, lulled by the song.
But from her little pink mouth, she kept mumbling a few nonsensical words.
“I have a dad now…”
“I’m not a wild child…”
“Hehe…”
Unknowingly, Shen Sisi’s eyes welled up. The unsettling feeling in her heart was being pulled by an invisible force, slowly becoming clear and resolute.
No matter what her uncle was scheming, and whether he agreed or not, she had to take Niu Niu away from Lin County and go with Gu Chengfeng!
She not only wanted to give Niu Niu a complete family but also wanted to find the best doctor to treat her illness!
She slept without dreams, and by the time she woke up the next morning, the sun was already high in the sky.
She got up, tidied herself and Niu Niu, and went to the kitchen to light the stove and start making breakfast.
The kitchen was small, with one stove, one cabinet for dishes, and a small cutting table. It was completely filled with the things Gu Chengfeng had bought.
She looked at the two pieces of pork belly—fatty and lean, shimmering with oil—and couldn’t help but swallow.
Niu Niu hugged her leg, tiptoeing to look at the meat on the table, her mouth watering.
“Mama, I want to eat meat.”
“Okay, you wait! Mama will make you ground meat and shredded-meat noodles.”
Niu Niu hummed in delight, dancing with joy. “Niu Niu loves Mama’s ground meat the most…”
A smile played on Shen Sisi’s lips. She swung the cleaver and easily cut off a small piece of meat.
She trimmed the pork skin and set it aside, then chopped the half-fat, half-lean pork into fine mince.
The ground meat had enough fat, so it only needed a tiny bit of oil to pan-fry. It quickly sizzled and turned golden.
Adding a little salt and a few drops of soy sauce, she stir-fried it until the aroma of the meat came out, a fragrant scent that made one’s mouth water.
After frying the meat, she didn’t wash the pot. She added a bowl of water, and when it came to a boil, she added the noodles.
When the broth had almost evaporated and thickened, she poured the ground meat in and stirred it all together. When it was the consistency of mixed noodles, she took it out of the pot and sprinkled on some chopped green onions.
A bowl of delicious, fragrant, and beautiful ground meat noodles was ready. The scent went straight to their heads.
Niu Niu couldn’t wait, grabbing her chopsticks and mumbling that she wanted to eat “golden meat noodles.”
Shen Sisi wiped the sweat from her forehead, about to blow on the noodles to cool them down for Niu Niu, when Chen Jianguo, smelling the aroma, rushed in. He saw a small piece of pork had been cut off and the bowl of ground meat noodles in front of Niu Niu. His face darkened, and he couldn’t help but start cursing.
“Eat, eat, eat. She’s a dying person, why are you feeding her meat? It’s a waste! I say, you should just get rid of this burden, send her back to the countryside, and live a good life with Comrade Gu. Then you can have a son.”
Shen Sisi’s face immediately fell. She wanted to hit him with the spatula. “Who are you calling a dying person? Don’t you dare curse my daughter again!”
“Someone’s backing you up, so you’re getting cocky, huh? Shen Sisi, don’t think that just because you’ve latched on to a fool, you can live a life without worries. He’s only after your looks. When he’s constantly insulted for having a used-up woman, will he still want you? Just wait to be kicked out!”
Shen Sisi’s hand holding the chopsticks was trembling. “Stop your meddling.”
“Shen Sisi, don’t be ungrateful. I’m doing this for your own good. Leave the child behind, marry him, and have a son for him right away. Otherwise…”
“That’s enough!” Another half-word from him and she would be disgusted. “I won’t abandon Niu Niu, and I won’t rely on a child to keep a man. All you ever do is find us a bother. In that case, we’ll leave…”
Without another word, she picked up Niu Niu and rushed for the door.
She left so decisively because she was sure that Chen Jianguo wouldn’t let her go.
If she left, wouldn’t Chen Jianguo’s clever plan go to waste?
Sure enough, before she even reached the door, Chen Jianguo became anxious. “Leave? Where are you going? The whole compound knows you’re getting married. Do you want to make our family a laughingstock?”
Shen Sisi’s steps faltered slightly. “Not leaving is an option, too. We want to eat ground meat noodles.”
Chen Jianguo was so angry he gritted his teeth. “Eat, eat, eat…”
A sly smile appeared on Shen Sisi’s lips, like a clever little fox. “Since I’m getting married, I want to have a good meal. For lunch, I want braised pork, mushroom soup, and beans with eggplant…”
“Shen Sisi, don’t push your luck…” Chen Jianguo cursed.
Shen Sisi pouted and shrugged. “Fine then, I’ll go! I’ll eat outside.”
She took a few more steps forward, acting all wronged, making a big show of putting on her shoes.
Chen Jianguo’s back teeth were about to crack. Thinking that Gu Chengfeng could arrive any minute, he turned red with fury. “Don’t go… get back here! I’ll have your aunt make it for you.”
Shen Sisi and Niu Niu exchanged a look, and a victorious smile appeared on her face.
Zhao Shilan also leaned against the door, smiling. She never thought her husband, Lao Chen, would be so completely subdued by someone.
She was happy, and she worked with extra energy, preparing a table full of dishes by just 11 o’clock.
Golden, soft, and delicious braised pork, exuding the aroma of soy sauce and meat; stir-fried eggplant and beans with minced garlic and chilies, which were already tender; and a beautiful tomato and mushroom soup, fried peanuts, and garlic-sautéed bok choy… it was as rich as a holiday feast.
Shen Sisi’s mouth was watering, and Niu Niu was already sucking on her fingers.
But Chen Jianguo wouldn’t let them touch their chopsticks, his eyes constantly darting to the clock on the wall.
It was almost 12 noon. Why hadn’t Gu Chengfeng arrived yet?
He wouldn’t break his promise, would he?
At first, Shen Sisi wasn’t worried. She knew Gu Chengfeng was a man of his word; if he said he would come at noon, he would.
As the minutes ticked by, Shen Sisi’s heart also tightened.
He had promised to bring the medicine, but there was no news. Could something have happened to him?
