- A Beauty in the 80s Goes on a Blind Date with Her Child, Captivating the Military Compound
- Chapter 109 - Thoughts That Shouldn't Be There
Seeing that bouquet of bright roses, Shen Sisi’s heart sank slightly. In this season, how could there be roses in Jiangcheng? One probably couldn’t find a single flower shop in the entire city.
“Mr. Wen!” Shen Sisi greeted him openly. As she approached, Wen Rong raised both hands and handed the bouquet to her.
Shen Sisi froze for a moment. For a man to give a woman fresh flowers—especially roses—was far too easy to misinterpret. She didn’t reach out to take them.
“What is this for…?”
Wen Rong remained as gentle as jade. “These are roses grown at our medicinal herb base. Take a look; what do you think?”
So they were grown at the base! She looked down at the small-petal variety of rose, and a refreshing fragrance immediately wafted into her nose.
“They’re lovely! I didn’t realize the base had flower fields too.”
“Once dried, these roses are medicinal herbs as well. They can be used for flower tea. Besides roses, we’ve also planted fields of chrysanthemums and honeysuckle.”
With that explanation, Shen Sisi understood. She had indeed misunderstood his intentions. Once she worked it out, she finally accepted the bouquet. “Then, thank you!”
Wen Rong smiled and pulled out a chair for her, making a gentlemanly gesture for her to be seated. “Miss Shen, please.”
Shen Sisi thanked him and sat down. Soon, a steak was placed before her, and Wen Rong opened a bottle of red wine. Seeing the alcohol, Shen Sisi politely covered the rim of her glass. “My apologies, Mr. Wen, but I can’t drink. I’m afraid I won’t be able to join you in a toast.”
The last time she had drank at home, she had made a complete fool of herself, throwing her arms around Gu Chengfeng and kissing him. With Gu Chengfeng not by her side, she didn’t dare touch a drop of alcohol.
Wen Rong didn’t press her. Since Shen Sisi wasn’t drinking, he simply chose not to either, waving for the waiter to take the wine away. This left Shen Sisi feeling slightly awkward, so she quickly pivoted the conversation toward business.
Wen Rong cut his steak slowly, his movements elegant. After a few bites, he suddenly set down his knife and fork. “Miss Shen, besides work, we could actually talk about other things.”
Shen Sisi didn’t follow his lead, staring at him with her large, inquisitive eyes.
Wen Rong smiled. “For example, let’s talk about you.”
“Me?” Shen Sisi kept her head down, taking a bite of the tender beef. “What is there to talk about?”
“Why wouldn’t there be? I heard that Miss Shen is married to a military officer?”
Shen Sisi instantly lost her appetite. She dropped her utensils with a clatter. “Are you investigating me?”
“No, no, don’t misunderstand. I just feel… since we are partners now, we should get to know each other better, shouldn’t we?”
Shen Sisi finally understood the purpose of this dinner. She leaned back against her chair. “What do you want to know? Just ask.”
Wen Rong thought for a moment before speaking. “Having known each other this long, I have yet to meet your husband. Does he also support you being an individual entrepreneur?”
“Of course he supports me! He’s incredibly supportive,” Shen Sisi said with a touch of sweetness and pride. As for why he hadn’t seen him… Shen Sisi didn’t explain. Gu Chengfeng was away on a mission—she’d heard it was related to the border—and she couldn’t discuss it.
“To be honest, the money I invested came from my husband’s support. He is a very, very good man. Whatever I want to do, he will always stand by me.”
When she spoke of Gu Chengfeng, her eyes sparkled like stars. Wen Rong sat quietly across from her, watching the shy, feminine expression on her face as she mentioned her husband. He suddenly understood everything, and a look of disappointment flickered across his face.
“I thought… I thought perhaps he didn’t support you, and that you were having a disagreement.”
“You’re overthinking it. Chengfeng isn’t that kind of man. We’ve never even had a real argument, let alone yelled at each other.”
Mentioning Gu Chengfeng made Shen Sisi talkative and radiant. She was no longer the tough, clever businesswoman, but seemed to transform back into a simple, happy young woman. Only a girl who is deeply loved could radiate such an aura.
“It seems the two of you are truly happy together…” Wen Rong took a bitter sip of lemon water. Suddenly, he really did want a drink.
“We are.”
As he looked at Shen Sisi’s blissful expression, she seemed to be draped in a soft, glowing light. He laughed at himself—laughing at the fact that he had actually harbored thoughts he shouldn’t have had. In the end, he was the fool.
He raised his water glass. “Then I shall use water instead of wine to wish you and your husband a lifetime of happiness.”
Shen Sisi raised her glass and lightly clinked it against his. “Thank you. I also wish you, Mr. Wen, a prosperous business and that all your wishes come true.”
Clink!
The glass rang out, and Shen Sisi secretly breathed a sigh of relief. She hadn’t been oblivious to Wen Rong’s small intentions. But since he hadn’t spoken them aloud, she chose to play dumb. Her tireless praise of Gu Chengfeng was heartfelt, but it also served as a deliberate “display of affection” to let the other party know to back off.
Fortunately, Wen Rong was a man of dignity and grace. The “window paper” had not been poked through, and it was clear he had given up. Everything was still fine.
For the rest of the meal, the atmosphere was much lighter and more harmonious. Wen Rong was very witty and told her many stories about the specialties and sights of Hong Kong. Shen Sisi, in turn, shared stories of Jiangcheng and Lin County.
An hour passed without them noticing. Seeing that it was getting late and remembering she wanted to go home to be with Niu Niu, Shen Sisi rose first.
“Mr. Wen, thank you. Next time, it’s my treat!”
“It’s a deal.”
“I’m in a hurry to get back, so I won’t stay any longer.” Shen Sisi picked up her flowers and bag, preparing to leave.
Wen Rong wiped the corners of his mouth and stood up as well. “I’ve finished as well. Let me drive you.”
While Shen Sisi waited for him to pull the car around, a familiar figure flashed across the street, moving faster than a rabbit. She frowned. “Gu Qingqian?”
At this time, Gu Qingqian should have been eating dinner at home. Why would she be here? She felt something was wrong, but before she could think further, the black sedan slowed to a stop in front of her. Wen Rong got out to open the door. “Get in.”
On the way back, Wen Rong took a detour to his residence to pick up a small gift for Niu Niu—a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Western doll wearing a beautiful pink dress.
“Thank you. I’m sure my daughter will love it,” Shen Sisi said, thanking him for his kindness. The doll was clearly not from the mainland; it must have been something he brought from Hong Kong. Wen Rong was truly thoughtful.
“Little girls all love these. If your Niu Niu likes it, I’ll bring different ones next time.”
The two chatted as they drove, arriving near the military residential compound before they knew it. Wen Rong didn’t mind, but Shen Sisi asked him to stop early.
“Mr. Wen, I’ll get out here.”
The military compound was just ahead. If a luxury sedan suddenly stopped there, it would undoubtedly become the focus of everyone’s attention. She didn’t want any more messy gossip spreading.
Wen Rong was understanding and stopped at a corner. “Alright then. Until we meet again!”
Shen Sisi nodded. “Until we meet again.”
She held her flowers and walked toward home at a leisurely pace, her graceful figure forming a beautiful silhouette against the evening. When she reached her front door and was about to push open the gate, she heard the muffled sound of someone inside mentioning her name.
“Mom, I saw it with my own eyes! That Shen Sisi is out there having a secret date with a ‘wild man’!
