- Chapter 104 - Her Heart Bound to Him
Yang Qiuxia used her sleeve to wipe the tears from her face. “If it’s not because of you, then who else could it be?”
Shen Sisi was genuinely amused by the woman’s sheer stupidity. “Yang Qiuxia, you’re playing the fool while knowing exactly what’s going on. I know the kind of person you are, and do you really think Regimental Commander Chen doesn’t understand as well?”
“You blame the heavens and the earth, but why don’t you ever blame yourself? Why don’t you try looking for the cause within?”
“Me?” Yang Qiuxia started to reflect. She wanted to argue, but she couldn’t find a single word to say in her defense.
“I told Zhang Xiuhong the same thing, and now I’m giving you the same advice: when things go wrong, look at your own actions first. Stop spending your days blaming the world and everyone else. As long as you keep your mouth shut and stop causing trouble, this marriage won’t end in divorce.”
“Would you really be so kind?” Yang Qiuxia asked suspiciously.
“Believe it or not, it’s up to you. However, this is my final warning. If you dare to continue being unreasonable and blame your divorce on me, don’t blame me when I make that apology letter public!”
That letter was Yang Qiuxia’s lifeblood; Shen Sisi held it firmly over her head.
Yang Qiuxia felt indignant and resentful, yet she was utterly powerless against Shen Sisi.
“By the way, the next time you decide to seek death, don’t do it in front of me. I can’t stand seeing filth, and I hate seeing people throw their lives away even more.” After saying her piece, Shen Sisi turned away, her thick, silky ponytail swaying as she walked off with brisk strides.
She had said all there was to say. As for forgiving Yang Qiuxia—she was simply incapable of that. She didn’t consider herself that magnanimous, but she wasn’t stone-hearted either; a gentle nudge was enough. Whether Yang Qiuxia believed her or whether the divorce proceeded was not something she intended to get involved in.
Watching Shen Sisi’s receding back, Yang Qiuxia slumped onto the bench, ruminating on those words.
It seemed… they weren’t without logic.
No wonder Zhang Xiuhong had been acting so sweet with her husband lately; it turned out Shen Sisi had been coaching her. Yang Qiuxia smoothed her hair and decided to go home, take a bath, put on some makeup, and go to the military camp to have a proper heart-to-heart with her “Old Chen.”
Physically and mentally exhausted, Shen Sisi walked slowly toward her front door. In the courtyard, her little one was spreading her arms, imitating a mother hen as she chased chickens around the yard.
Hearing footsteps, Niu Niu turned her head. Her large, bright eyes instantly sparkled with starlight.
“Mama!”
Shen Sisi crouched down with open arms, letting Niu Niu fly into her chest. The impact was so great that Shen Sisi staggered and ended up sitting right on the dirt ground. The little girl’s strength had certainly increased lately!
“Hahaha…” Shen Sisi held Niu Niu, her palms affectionately mussing the child’s hair. Niu Niu was like a joyful puppy, wriggling in her mother’s embrace.
“Mama, where did you go? Niu Niu missed you so much…”
Shen Sisi felt a pang of heartache. Counting it up, she hadn’t spent quality time with Niu Niu for several days. From the look of things, she was only going to get busier.
She hugged her little treasure tighter, filled with guilt. “I’m sorry, baby. Mama was out working.”
Niu Niu sniffled piteously and acted spoiled. “I don’t want Mama to work. I want Mama to play with me.”
Shen Sisi picked her up and brushed the dust off their clothes. She didn’t give in just to please her, nor did she coldly refuse; instead, she explained with patience.
“Niu Niu, be a good girl. Before I was your Mama, I was first Shen Sisi.”
“I have my own career and my own dreams. I am working very hard so that we can have a better tomorrow.”
Niu Niu seemed to understand only half of it. She murmured in a milky voice, “Is it… the kind of thing you want to do very, very much?”
Shen Sisi nodded with a smile, realizing her little girl was growing up. Her tone was firm: “That’s right. This job is something Mama wants to do very, very much. This isn’t just my career; it belongs to many people. We are a team, working toward a common goal.”
“Of course, once I’m off work, my time belongs to you. Outside of work hours, Mama will play with you.”
Niu Niu had been full of grievances. Her mother had been coming home later and later, and being home alone was boring. If she hadn’t been so bored, she wouldn’t have been tricked into going outside and bullied by that kid, Wenming.
She desperately wanted her mother by her side, just like before, when they were together day and night. But Mama had said she had something she really wanted to do; she had her own career and dreams. Niu Niu couldn’t be selfish.
She twisted her fingers in conflict, her little mind racing through many thoughts. Finally, the tangled mess in her head smoothed out. Mama had convinced her!
“Mama, Niu Niu isn’t angry anymore!” She cupped Shen Sisi’s face and gave her a loud mwah.
What soft, sweet lips! Shen Sisi’s heart melted completely; she felt as if her very bones had turned to jelly because of this little cream puff.
“Niu Niu will have something very important that she wants to do in the future, too. When that time comes, Mama will definitely support you.”
Niu Niu hummed in agreement. Actually, she didn’t need to wait for the “future”—she had something she wanted to do right now: she wanted to go to kindergarten.
Back in the countryside, there were no kindergartens; children just ran around the village in their split-seat pants. But recently, when Grandma took her for a walk, they passed a house painted with bright, colorful oil paints. Inside, there were slides, seesaws, and a wooden carousel…
She wanted to go in and play so badly. But the gate was locked. Grandma said only children who attended kindergarten could go in there.
Looking at that novel and wonderful little world, her heart had already flown inside. She wanted to go to kindergarten, but she heard there were many other children there, and she was afraid they might bully her.
Niu Niu had something on her mind. Shen Sisi noticed it, but whenever she asked, the child wouldn’t answer, remaining uncharacteristically gloomy.
Could it be she hasn’t finished sulking about earlier? Shen Sisi wondered. Suddenly, she realized that watching a child grow up brought its own set of headaches.
That night, Shen Sisi stayed with Niu Niu until she fell asleep. Once the child was out, she sat alone under the lamp and drew several blueprints. She eventually fell asleep slumped over the table, only to be jolted awake by the midnight chill.
Waking up to the empty room, she suddenly began to miss Gu Chengfeng. She wondered how his mission was going, if he was eating well, or if he was injured…
She couldn’t remember exactly when she had started feeling so anxious about him. That indefinable emotion was growing wildly in the darkness.
That night, she had several dreams, and every single one was about Gu Chengfeng. She dreamed he returned, saw her slumped under the lamp, and draped a coat over her shoulders. She dreamed he held her and whispered those face-reddening words of affection. She dreamed he… pressed her down against his chest…
The result was that the next morning, she woke up with dark circles under her eyes like a panda.
After getting up, she gave some money to Xu Hongying and asked her to take Niu Niu to the department store to pick out a toy she liked.
“Mom, I’m sorry to trouble you. I’ll be very busy these next few days. Once the factory is repaired, we’ll be opening for business…”
Xu Hongying pushed the money back. “This old woman still has enough for a toy. But you—don’t overwork yourself. Watch your body…”
As she spoke, her eyes drifted toward Shen Sisi’s lower abdomen. The look gave Sisi quite a shiver.
