- Chapter 84 - Going to be the Death of Me
Lu Xiao stared at the black-and-gold envelope in his hand, his expression a turbulent mix of sun and clouds. He couldn’t wrap his head around what this guy was playing at. Even if it were an invitation, couldn’t he have just invited Shen Zhao alone? Why drag him along too? What were his intentions? Was he trying to get under Lu Xiao’s skin?
Tch!
His reflexes were faster than his brain; for a split second, he wanted nothing more than to slam the ticket into the man’s face and bark out something like, “Who cares?” But before his hand could even lift, it was pressed back down by Shen Zhao.
Lu Xiao turned his head to find Shen Zhao giving him a threatening look that clearly said, “Try it and see what happens.”
He let out a cold snort. Finally, under Shen Zhao’s gratified gaze, he bit his back teeth and ground out a sentence to Nine: “Thanks. You really are… too! Kind!”
A hint of a smirk still lingered at the corners of Nine’s eyes. He gave a slow, mock bow and followed the nurse back toward the laser treatment room.
Lu Xiao’s eyes followed him until he vanished from sight. Only then did he look down at the VIP tickets in his and Shen Zhao’s hands. He couldn’t help but curse, “What a piece of work!”
Then he looked at Shen Zhao. “You aren’t actually going, are you?”
“I want to go,” Shen Zhao replied seriously.
“Excuse me? What is there to see?” Lu Xiao’s tone was one of pure disbelief. He licked his teeth, his voice dripping with irritation. “What’s so great about it? What do you like? Singing? Dancing? Look at me instead—whatever program you like, I’ll perform it for you!”
Shen Zhao couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh. “Are you jealous?”
Lu Xiao remained defiant. “Of him? Is he even worth it?”
Shen Zhao’s tone turned calm. “He was my best friend when I was a kid. I truly want to see what his work is like now. So… if you aren’t jealous, why don’t we go to the concert together?”
Lu Xiao kept a stony face, staring at the ticket in Shen Zhao’s hand. Finally, he squeezed a sentence out of his throat: “Fine. We’ll go!”
Shen Zhao smiled and walked ahead. Lu Xiao followed, but after a long while, he still couldn’t hold it in. “Don’t think I’m being annoying—I’m not targeting him specifically—but I still think this friend of yours…”
Shen Zhao suddenly turned around to face Lu Xiao. He let out a soft breath, his eyes flickering with a dark, steady light. “I know what I’m doing.”
Lu Xiao knit his brows and lowered his voice. “Have you noticed something?”
“Regardless of what I’ve noticed, the truth will come to light soon,” Shen Zhao said coolly. He continued, “Before I jumped from the vehicle, I stabbed the kidnapper in the back, right over the liver, with a pair of scissors…”
Lu Xiao’s gaze sharpened, waiting for him to continue.
“He’s still staying at my house tonight. When he showers or changes his clothes, I can take a look. If there’s no scar, then I’m just being paranoid.” Shen Zhao’s voice was slow and unhurried.
Lu Xiao had just been thinking that Shen Zhao’s head was still screwed on straight and that he hadn’t been blinded by that kid. He had been ready to praise him. But the moment he heard the phrase “take a look when he showers,” his face changed instantly.
“When did you say you’d look?” Lu Xiao asked coldly. “Go ahead, say it one more time.”
Shen Zhao glanced at him, his tone indifferent. “When people shower, they generally have to change their clothes.”
Lu Xiao’s lip twitched. Without a word, he grabbed Shen Zhao’s wrist and marched him toward the parking lot.
The air in the parking lot was much more stifling than inside the hospital. The dim, yellowish overhead lights stretched their shadows out, the edges of the silhouettes appearing hazy and blurred.
Before Shen Zhao could reach for the car door, Lu Xiao pinned his wrist against the roof of the car. His other hand almost encircled Shen Zhao’s waist. Lu Xiao’s expression was full of raw aggression, his gaze suppressed and dark.
Forced against the icy body of the car, Shen Zhao froze. “What are you doing?”
Lu Xiao looked like he didn’t know whether to laugh or be angry. His chest rose and fell heavily. Standing at 190cm, his height loomed over the doctor, his upper body pressing into Shen Zhao’s. Even through their layers of clothing, Shen Zhao could feel the scorching heat radiating from him.
“Watch him while he showers?” Lu Xiao growled. “What kind of damn fetish is that…”
Shen Zhao was momentarily speechless. When he had said it, he hadn’t thought about it in that way at all. To him, the shower was simply a convenient and logical scenario for his plan. Besides, was there really anything wrong with it?
How did Lu Xiao make it sound like he was some kind of voyeur?
“Then what should I do? Ask him to lift his shirt for me for no reason?” Shen Zhao was also starting to get annoyed.
Lu Xiao’s gaze was heavy. He let out a mocking laugh. “Last time you showered at my place, you were covered in injuries, yet you insisted on kicking me out so you could wash yourself. But this time, you aren’t bothered by ‘peeking’ at someone else at all!”
His eyes narrowed. Not only was he controlling Shen Zhao’s wrist, but his other hand also gripped Shen Zhao’s waist. He applied a bit of pressure with his fingers, startling a soft gasp out of Shen Zhao.
Lu Xiao faltered, his expression freezing for a moment.
What was that sound?
It was as if he had discovered a new world. He pressed his lower body even closer to Shen Zhao, his expression turning playful as he bit his lower lip.
The dim yellow light of the parking lot fell across the bridge of Shen Zhao’s nose and the strands of his hair, creating an intoxicating sight.
Shen Zhao’s ears turned a deep crimson. “If you have something to say, can’t we say it inside the car? How is this behavior any different from a hooligan’s?”
Lu Xiao lazily lifted his eyelids. “We could. But this shower thing… I’m still not happy about it. Let’s make a deal—next time, shower with me instead. I’m very generous; you can look wherever you want.”
Lu Xiao’s lips drew closer and closer to Shen Zhao’s. With his upper body pinned and his lower body crowded, Shen Zhao had no room to fight back.
“…What a sick sense of humor.” Angered, Shen Zhao stomped on his foot.
Lu Xiao didn’t care if his foot hurt or not; he couldn’t stop grinning. “Then it’s settled.”
“Your wound was just stitched. You shouldn’t soak it in water,” Shen Zhao said flatly, though he refused to look at him.
“I don’t care,” Lu Xiao said unhurriedly. “There will come a day when I can.” He seemed to think of something else and leaned in from a different angle. “I haven’t asked you yet. You and him… how do you sleep at your house?”
“What do you mean?”
“You know exactly what I mean! Don’t tell me you’re sleeping in the same room!”
The corners of Shen Zhao’s mouth tilted up slightly. He looked at Lu Xiao with an unreadable expression. “What do you think?”
Lu Xiao ground his teeth. “I haven’t even shared a bed with you yet!”
Shen Zhao arched an eyebrow, looking at him with a half-smile. “Are you saying you want to sleep with me?”
Lu Xiao frowned. The corners of Shen Zhao’s eyes were always tinged with a faint flush, and his lids seemed to shimmer like water. Usually, his gaze was cool and distant, but this sudden, provocative expression made a fire roar to life in Lu Xiao’s gut.
He nearly couldn’t take it. Lu Xiao’s breath hitched, his ears burning hot in an instant.
Damn it. He has a side like this, too?
Lu Xiao was bold with his words, but he suffered from a complete lack of practical experience.
“Don’t think I won’t dare!” He hissed through gritted teeth. In a moment like this, all he could do was fret with anxiety.
Dammit! I’m going to be the death of me because of this man.
