- Chapter 59 - Lu Xiao, Give Me a Cigarette
Talk about a big mouth!
The woman continued her shouting. Ignoring the attempts of the two officers to block her, she forced her way up the stairs, running straight into Shen Zhao as he stepped out of the lounge and closed the door.
Shen Zhao immediately blocked the doorway with his body, looking at her with a cold, unyielding gaze.
“Where is my son? Is my son in there! Get out of my way!” As she spoke, the woman reached out to shove Shen Zhao.
“Did I give you too much face just now!” Lu Xiao’s voice came from behind the woman, his words squeezed through gritted teeth.
Infuriated, the woman raised her hand and jabbed her finger at the group. “You two grown men are bullying a defenseless woman? You even dare to threaten me? You’re keeping my son locked up—what kind of sick intentions do you have!”
Shen Zhao’s eyes were terrifyingly dark. “Do you actually care about him? I haven’t heard a single trace of concern in anything you’ve said.”
The woman went mad with rage. She shoved Shen Zhao aside, grabbing his collar and pushing him so hard he stumbled, before she lunged at the door and began kicking it violently.
“Stay out of my business! Cheng Nianchuan! Get out here!”
“Come home right now!”
“Cheng Nianchuan!!”
The sound of her assault on the door echoed throughout the entire police building.
Lu Xiao quickly stabilized Shen Zhao. He watched the frantic woman, his teeth itching with the urge to intervene, but knowing he couldn’t get physical with her.
Lin Xue stepped forward with a practiced, thin smile. “Madam, we are simply following necessary legal procedures. We have no intention of ‘detaining’ your son. Furthermore, the child’s mental state is currently unstable. If you continue like this, we will be forced to remove you from the premises.”
The woman shot Lin Xue a dirty look. “Don’t play the saint with me. Open this door right now! Or I’ll make sure none of you have a job by tomorrow!”
Shen Zhao let out a cold laugh. “Your son staying here is a threat to you and his ‘mysterious father,’ isn’t it?”
The woman’s face froze, and her kicking stopped for a split second. She immediately shrieked, “Don’t talk nonsense! I just want to take him home! Regardless of what you say, he is leaving with me today!”
She began pounding the door with her fists, screaming inside, “Cheng Nianchuan! Open this door, do you hear me!”
At that moment, Lu Xiao’s eyes narrowed. He suddenly grabbed the woman’s wrist and barked at her, “Why don’t you explain the bruising on your arm and those broken nails!”
The woman’s heart skipped a beat. Her face turned deathly pale as she looked at Lu Xiao in terror. “Let go of me!”
She wrenched her hand away and immediately yanked the sleeve of her cashmere coat down, covering the bruises on her forearm. “I… I tripped! This has nothing to do with you!”
Shen Zhao exhaled, stepping closer to the woman. “You want to take him away. I want to know what waits for him at home. Is it the same fate you face—being slaughtered at someone’s whim?”
The woman’s body trembled, her eyes darting around.
“Who is the child’s father?” Shen Zhao pressed.
His gaze seemed to pierce through to her very soul. The woman could barely stand; the thin heels of her shoes wobbled and slid across the floor. She slumped against the lounge door, her head shaking as she whispered to herself, “If I don’t bring him back, he’ll kill me… he’ll kill me…”
Lu Xiao glanced at Shen Zhao, who gave a slight shake of his head.
“Please leave,” Lu Xiao said coldly. “You aren’t taking him. Once I’ve finished my questioning, I’ll consider personally escorting him back.”
The woman looked up, glaring at him with pure hatred. “You wouldn’t dare!”
Lu Xiao gave a soft, mocking snort. “If you don’t leave on your own, I’ll have security drag you out.”
The woman’s lips were bloodless. Her eyes were glazed with shock as she stared through the small window at the huddled form of Cheng Nianchuan in the corner of the bed. “You… you’ll regret this!”
With that, she turned and ran toward the exit, but suddenly lost her balance and tripped hard!
She snarled as she turned back to glare at the three of them. Lin Xue covered her mouth, looking faux-apologetic. “Oh dear, be careful! You really should watch where you’re going!”
The woman gasped for air, her eyes cutting into Lin Xue like a knife. “You… just you wait!”
As they turned back, Lu Xiao secretly gave Lin Xue a thumbs-up.
A sly look crossed Lin Xue’s face. “That’s what she gets for pushing Doctor Shen~”
Lu Xiao was delighted, though he felt a pang of regret. Lin Xue had beaten him to it again! He should have been the one to “accidentally” trip the woman!!!
Shen Zhao looked concerned as they headed back. “Will there really be no trouble?”
Lu Xiao waved it off. “What can she do? At most, she complains to Old Gao. Don’t worry about it. You go back in and talk to the kid; I’ll handle it if the sky falls.”
Shen Zhao nodded and knocked gently on the door. “Xiao Cheng, it’s me.”
Shen Zhao stayed with Cheng Nianchuan for the entire afternoon. As time passed, the shadows from the sun outside grew longer and the light dimmed. The air became heavy, weighing on everyone’s hearts.
Finally, Cheng Nianchuan spoke.
“I have to be good… Only when I’m good will Papa come to see me.”
His voice was tiny, carrying a weight of profound sadness, but he remained tight-lipped regarding his father’s name. Lu Xiao stood outside with his hands in his pockets, listening to their conversation while fiddling with a cigarette pack in his pocket.
“Xiao Cheng, how long were you held captive?”
“I don’t remember. I think it was several days ago…”
“Do you remember where you were when they took you?”
“School.”
The nanny had also stated she was waiting to pick him up at the school gates, but he never appeared.
“Did you see the kidnapper’s… face?” Shen Zhao asked softly, stroking the boy’s hair to help him relax. “Can you tell me what happened during those days? Don’t feel pressured. If it’s too painful, we can stop and rest, okay?”
Cheng Nianchuan tried to recall, his voice sounding as if it were being choked. After a long silence, he said, “At first… he just locked me up. He didn’t hurt me.”
Shen Zhao took notes, his fingers tightening slightly. “And then? What did he do?”
Cheng Nianchuan’s voice was airy. “A man in black clothes wearing a mask took some pictures of me and sent them to my Papa. They told me to shout at the camera, to tell Papa to come save me…”
“And did you do what he said?”
Cheng Nianchuan nodded, a look of hollow confusion in his eyes. “At that time… I was actually very happy.”
When those words were uttered, not only Shen Zhao, but even Lu Xiao leaning against the wall outside froze.
Shen Zhao’s pen faltered. “You… were looking forward to your father coming to save you?”
Cheng Nianchuan nodded. “I was kidnapped; surely he would be worried… I thought he might suddenly appear, like a hero, and take down the kidnapper.”
He stopped abruptly. A long silence followed. Shen Zhao didn’t want to push further on this topic, but Cheng Nianchuan spoke again.
He lowered his gaze, his eyelashes becoming wet. “He wouldn’t even pick up the phone…”
“Big brother, should I even be alive?”
His voice dropped lower and lower. Shen Zhao suppressed a surge of anger at the unknown father, feeling a heavy knot in his chest.
“Later, they blindfolded me and moved me to a different place. He tied me to a bed and set up a camera…”
Shen Zhao nodded. “Do you know what the person who kidnapped you wanted?”
Cheng Nianchuan shook his head, his voice devoid of emotion. “I don’t know.”
As night fell, Shen Zhao sighed and smoothed the boy’s hair. “You need to rest now. I’ll come see you tomorrow. Don’t worry, you’re safe here.”
When Shen Zhao closed the door, his eyes were full of worry. He turned to find Lu Xiao leaning against the wall.
“Lu Xiao, give me a cigarette…”
