A Bad-Hearted Doctor is Unbearably Beautiful - Chapter 29
The three of them returned to the police station. Lu Xiao was holding the velvet ring box that Wang Deng had found under the bouquet. The box was tightly wrapped in several layers of plastic wrap. When he opened it, he found a silver USB drive inside.
What was on this USB drive that made the assassins so desperate they’d be willing to burn down the entire apartment?
“Zhang Zhen, see what’s on this.” Lu Xiao handed the USB drive to Zhang Zhen.
Shen Zhao looked a little confused.
Lin Xue walked over. “You don’t know, Professor Shen? Our Captain Lu is completely clueless about computers.”
“Tsk, do you have to be such a chatterbox!” Lu Xiao shot a glare at Lin Xue.
Zhang Zhen said, “It’s encrypted. It’ll take some time to crack. Did this USB drive come from Zhang Dalong?”
“Brother Zhen, work hard! I believe in you!” Lu Xiao cheered Zhang Zhen on, then added, “But you have to keep this thing safe. It’s very important.”
Zhang Zhen nodded. Lu Xiao pulled Shen Zhao out of the room.
Shen Zhao’s eyes were fixed on the bloodstain on Lu Xiao’s arm. “Maybe you should get the wound stitched up first?”
Lu Xiao shook his head. “I have an appointment with Zhang Dalong’s wife. Let’s deal with it after we talk to her.”
Shen Zhao sighed and said nothing. They walked to the car.
Lu Xiao watched Shen Zhao’s expression. After hesitating for a long time, he said, “I’m not ignoring you. I’m just anxious about this case…”
Shen Zhao still didn’t respond. He opened the trunk of his car. Lu Xiao immediately went to the back of the car, trying to explain a little more, but when he looked down, he saw Shen Zhao taking out a small medical kit.
“Huh? What’s this for?”
Shen Zhao said calmly, “We’re not going to the hospital. I’ll take care of it in the car.”
Lu Xiao wasn’t sure what it was, or what Shen Zhao had just said, but he suddenly felt that Shen Zhao’s expression was incredibly gentle, and his eyes were beautiful, as if they were filled with tears.
“What are you standing there for? Get in and let me disinfect it.” Shen Zhao called Lu Xiao to get in the car.
Lu Xiao reclined his seat and lay down. Shen Zhao closed the door and turned his head to look at him, his gaze sweeping from top to bottom.
Shen Zhao said softly, “Is it only your arm that’s injured? How’s the shoulder wound from last time healing?”
Lu Xiao lay there nervously, feeling more anxious than he would on an operating table.
“I think it’s just my arm. I don’t feel any pain anywhere else,” Lu Xiao said, his eyes darting around to ease the awkwardness of being in a confined space—no, in a car together.
Why am I so embarrassed?
Shen Zhao opened the kit and spread it out on the back seat. He slid his own seat back, reached for the disinfectant and bandages from the back, and carefully began disinfecting Lu Xiao’s wound.
As Shen Zhao’s fingertips touched his arm, Lu Xiao felt his heart race for some unknown reason.
“Is that good enough?” Lu Xiao asked, looking at his arm that had been simply treated.
Suddenly, Shen Zhao leaned in closer, kneeling on the driver’s seat, and began to unbutton Lu Xiao’s shirt.
“What are you doing?”
Lu Xiao was startled, but he didn’t dare to move. He just widened his eyes and swallowed.
As Shen Zhao unbuttoned the third button, Lu Xiao couldn’t help but ask, “Do you have to take off so much?”
Shen Zhao didn’t even look up. “I need to check for a tear in your shoulder.”
Lu Xiao tried to calm himself down. Relax, relax, we’re both men. There’s nothing to see.
Besides, it’s not the first time Shen Zhao has cut my clothes off…
Lu Xiao recalled lying on the operating table that time. He didn’t think anything of it back then, but now, he felt his face getting hot just thinking about it.
Shen Zhao’s palm was warm, but his fingertips were a little cool. When his fingertips brushed against Lu Xiao’s skin, Lu Xiao felt a tingling sensation throughout his body.
Shen Zhao quickly cut off the bandage that was wrapped around Lu Xiao’s shoulder, revealing the stitched-up wound, which was indeed bleeding. The wound was a jagged gash, and the stitches were oozing red.
As Shen Zhao turned to look for things in the first aid kit, he said with a tone of distaste, “You’re covered in wounds. Next time, I should wrap you up in bandages from head to toe like a mummy before you go out.”
“Shen Zhao, you’re pretty funny,” Lu Xiao said with a smile.
Shen Zhao didn’t respond. He skillfully tore open an alcohol pad and pressed it directly onto the bleeding wound.
Lu Xiao took a sharp breath, his muscles tensing. “Gently, Professor Shen.”
Shen Zhao looked up and asked, “Does it hurt?”
Lu Xiao’s lips curled into a smile. He stared at Shen Zhao and nodded.
Shen Zhao chuckled. “You didn’t complain about the pain when you were injured. Now you’re saying it hurts. Just bear with it!”
Lu Xiao’s smile didn’t fade. He suddenly brought his chin closer to Shen Zhao, his eyes looking dangerous.
The distance between them closed again. Their breaths mingled, the warm air carrying an invasive intensity.
For a moment, Lu Xiao’s eyes became hazy.
On an impulse, he wanted to be closer to Shen Zhao… even closer.
“It hurts so much. It’s hard to bear,” Lu Xiao whispered into Shen Zhao’s ear.
“Huh? It hurts that much?” Shen Zhao straightened up in confusion, only to see a subtle, flirtatious look on Lu Xiao’s face.
“Lu Xiao! I’m bandaging your wound! What are you thinking about?!” Shen Zhao used his elbow to push Lu Xiao’s head back against the seat.
Lu Xiao’s face was nonchalant. “You’re so handsome, and you’re so close to me. It’s hard not to think about things. Besides, I’m not some fake gentleman who can resist temptation.”
Shen Zhao’s ears turned red with anger. “You’re a maniac!”
“I’m sorry, Professor Shen. I’m fine now. Can we go?” Lu Xiao said with an apologetic smile.
Shen Zhao nodded and put his medical kit away. He then seemed to remember something and asked, “Has your car not been repaired yet?”
Lu Xiao’s heart sank. He thought Shen Zhao wasn’t going to let him ride in his car anymore.
“Almost, almost. I’m having it modified, installing some bulletproof materials. For safety!”
“Okay.”
Garden of Splendor Cafe
Lu Xiao and Zhang Dalong’s wife, Tang Jin, had agreed to meet at a garden cafe in the bustling city center. It was a prime location. After entering through the front gate, they found an artificial green space with a small pond and a graceful statue of an angel in the middle. The garden was behind the green space, with a patio extending over the water and a few tables.
Lu Xiao and Shen Zhao each ordered an espresso and a cold brew. The light breeze created ripples on the surface of their coffee as they waited.
Tang Jin arrived right on time. She was wearing a deep-red dress and the latest CL high heels. Over the dress, she wore a brown cashmere coat with a large lynx fur collar. Her makeup was flawless, and every strand of her hair seemed meticulously styled.
Both men were surprised by her appearance. Zhang Dalong’s usual attire for work and events was quite tasteless. He looked like an aged, scruffy man. Was this what his wife was like?
“Hello, you must be Officer Lu,” Tang Jin said with a polite and elegant smile. The faint smile on her lips made it impossible to associate her with a woman who had just lost her husband. There wasn’t a hint of sadness in her eyes; if anything, she seemed a little cheerful.
They exchanged a look, immediately on high alert. Could Tang Jin have been involved in the deaths of the two victims?
“Hello, Ms. Tang,” Lu Xiao and Shen Zhao greeted her.
Lu Xiao handed the menu to Tang Jin. “Would you like something to eat or drink?”
Tang Jin smiled as she took the menu and ordered a glass of red wine from the server.
