- A Bad-Hearted Doctor is Unbearably Beautiful
- Chapter 13 - I'll Wait for You at the Door Office
Shen Zhao’s phone screen suddenly lit up with an unfamiliar number.
“Hello?”
“Hurry up and come out! I’m waiting for you at the door.”
Shen Zhao froze for a second before taking the phone away from his ear and looking at the screen again. Who is this?
Shen Zhao said coldly, “Who is this, please?”
“What do you mean, ‘who’? You don’t want to investigate the case anymore? You can’t even recognize my voice.”
Shen Zhao sighed. “One moment.”
When Shen Zhao walked out of the hospital, he saw Lu Xiao’s black Ford F-150 in the distance. The body of the truck was still covered with dust from the explosion scene a few days ago.
Lu Xiao, however, seemed like a different person. His hair was meticulously combed, and he even had on hair gel. His stubble was cleanly shaved. He was wearing a black Kiton shirt, and when he raised his hand, the shirt outlined Lu Xiao’s firm waist. The large luxury brand logo on his belt shone brightly in the sunlight.
He had long legs and was leaning against the car door. His height, nearly 1.9 meters, combined with his broad shoulders and narrow waist, made him look like an expensive model standing in front of the car. The car, however, was indeed a little dirty.
Lu Xiao was wearing a pair of low-key Lotos sunglasses with intricate carvings. He was holding a cigarette between his fingers. After taking the last puff, he threw the cigarette butt on the ground and stomped it out.
When he looked up again, he happened to see Shen Zhao, who was bundled up in several layers of clothes.
“I’ve been waiting for you, Dr. Shen.”
Lu Xiao gently pushed his sunglasses down with his fingers. The row of small diamonds embedded in the temple shined with a dazzling light. Lu Xiao revealed one of his eyes and stared at Shen Zhao with a bright smile.
Shen Zhao gave him a sideways glance and said, “What a show-off.” He walked around Lu Xiao and opened the front passenger door.
Lu Xiao’s smile froze on his face, and he almost gritted his teeth. He immediately turned around, opened his own door, and got into the driver’s seat.
“What did you just say?”
But he saw that Shen Zhao’s face had gotten even darker…
Shen Zhao had opened the car door but didn’t even sit down. He stood on the ground, his face full of speechless confusion, looking at the inside of Lu Xiao’s car.
His gaze swept over the half-eaten bag of soda crackers wedged between the two seats, the file bag casually tossed on the dashboard, and the half-empty cup of latte with coffee stains on the rim sitting in the cup holder… The coffee didn’t look like it had just been bought; who knew how many days it had been there.
At this moment, Lu Xiao’s expression changed from being ready to breathe fire to that of an awkward, loyal dog. He quickly gathered the clutter in the car into his hands and ran toward a trash can on the street, shouting, “I’m throwing it away, I’m throwing it away!”
“I’m sorry, I’ve been really busy with the case recently, so I didn’t have time to clean up…” Lu Xiao said, scratching his head and inviting Shen Zhao into the car.
Shen Zhao sat in Lu Xiao’s car, his long legs curled up, unwilling to stretch out. His expression was as if he was afraid of touching a cockroach, which looked very comical.
Lu Xiao felt the low pressure beside him. He was afraid that Shen Zhao would say something like, “Why don’t we drive my car instead?”
He didn’t say anything else and just hit the gas, driving away for a few hundred meters.
“Where are we going?” Shen Zhao asked, his body still sitting bolt upright, unwilling to lean back against the seat.
Lu Xiao glanced at Shen Zhao out of the corner of his eye and thought, This is my life. I’ll have to get a new car after this.
“To the police station. The forensic doctor is doing an autopsy. I just found out that the two bodies at the hospital have been identified. I also want to investigate the blood sample issue, but I feel like there are no clues. Besides, everything is just Old Third Song’s side of the story, so I can only start by investigating the two victims.”
Shen Zhao showed an expression of agreement.
“Their faces were so disfigured from the explosion that they were unrecognizable. We had to do a DNA test. The two people were both employees of the medical center: one was the owner of the medical center, Zhang Dalong, and the other was Liu Tingting, the HR manager who fired Old Third Song on behalf of the company.”
“So there really was a dispute with Old Third Song?” Shen Zhao asked with a hint of doubt.
“I didn’t want to believe it either, but that seems to be the case,” Lu Xiao said, pointing to the file bag under the dashboard.
“Inside are photos our forensic technicians took at the scene. You can take a look.”
Shen Zhao pinched the file bag with two fingers and lifted the kraft paper bag in front of him. He carefully unwound the string wrapped around the bag. Inside was a stack of photos.
The file bag was slightly tilted, and Shen Zhao held the photos in his hand, examining them carefully.
His gaze swept over the photos one by one. Shen Zhao’s expression gradually became solemn, and his eyebrows furrowed slightly.
On the charred ground, a body lay face up in the rubble. The flesh on the face had been so burned by the explosion that it was almost impossible to make out what the person looked like. The dark gray sweater was scorched black from the high temperature, with only mottled fragments of fabric stuck to the skin. Based on his body type, this should be the owner of the medical center, Zhang Dalong.
In another close-up photo, it was obvious that one of the man’s fingers had been blown off.
The other body was smaller and had a ponytail. It was clearly the HR manager, Liu Tingting.
Although Liu Tingting was in the foreground of this photo, it was clear that Zhang Dalong’s body was less than two meters behind her.
One of Liu Tingting’s arms had been blown off. The edge of the remaining limb showed white bones and charred flesh. Although Liu Tingting’s face was also affected by the bomb, some of her facial features were still faintly recognizable.
“What do you think?” Lu Xiao asked, his hands on the steering wheel.
Shen Zhao silently put the photos back into the file bag, re-wrapping the string. “If you’re asking about the perpetrator, I don’t think it’s Old Third Song.”
Lu Xiao showed a relieved expression. “I also thought Old Third Song’s cowardly nature didn’t fit, which is why I’m taking you to see the autopsy.”
Shen Zhao turned his head to look at Lu Xiao. “You’re not…”
“This Old Third Song guy, I initially thought he was a ruthless criminal, but then I realized that he’s not very capable. Besides, ever since he took the money and admitted his mother to the hospital, he temporarily lost his motive to commit a crime. If his mother had died because he couldn’t get her timely medical attention, I would believe he would do something out of the ordinary.”
Shen Zhao nodded. “Mmm, this case is very strange.”
“And given Old Third Song’s social circle, he wouldn’t be able to get his hands on such an advanced bomb.”
Lu Xiao’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He swallowed and reached for a bottle of water next to him, placing it in Shen Zhao’s hand.
“Have some water.”
“I’m not thirsty.” Shen Zhao’s gaze was still fixed on the road ahead.
“I’m thirsty. Help me twist this open.”
Shen Zhao: “…”
Lu Xiao took the water with the twisted-off cap from Shen Zhao, carefully tilted his head back, and took two big gulps. He then handed it back to Shen Zhao.
He didn’t need to look to know how disgusted Shen Zhao’s expression was right now!
This doctor is really interesting.
Under his sunglasses, Lu Xiao’s eyes curved, revealing a happy expression. He unconsciously started humming a song.
But what about the case Shen Zhao mentioned from five years ago, and that ‘important person’ he spoke of?
Lu Xiao desperately wanted to get to the bottom of it, but Shen Zhao was a man of few words. It was like pulling teeth just to get him to say a few extra sentences.
An important person… could it be a significant other or something like that?
Once his thoughts turned to this, Lu Xiao’s brain short-circuited. All kinds of wild possibilities ran through his mind.
The more he thought about it, the more he felt that Shen Zhao had too many little secrets, which made him so angry!
Lu Xiao drove on without saying a word, his face gradually turning red, and a hint of anger even appeared in the corners of his eyes.
“Shen Zhao!”
Shen Zhao was in a daze, and he felt that Lu Xiao’s sudden shout was inexplicable.
“?”
“That ‘important person’ you mentioned, were they a man or a woman?”
“Huh?”
Lu Xiao didn’t even notice how quickly he had changed the subject. “That person from five years ago you want to investigate, were they a man or a woman?”
“A man.”
“What… what were they to you?” Lu Xiao asked, squeezing the words out from the back of his teeth.
Shen Zhao, however, acted as if he hadn’t heard and fell silent.
The nameless fire that had been building up in Lu Xiao’s body now flared even higher.
The two of them were silent for a long time.
“I don’t know how to describe it,” Shen Zhao said softly.
Lu Xiao only regretted why he had so many questions. Why couldn’t I keep my mouth shut?
For the last few kilometers of the drive back to the police station, Lu Xiao drove along, feeling that he had encountered too many idiotic drivers today! When he saw one he didn’t like, he would roll down the window, yell at them for a bit, and then speed away in a cloud of dust.
