You Are My Omega - Chapter 83
Liu Lingyan was only allowed into the hospital room after being forced to wear two layers of masks. Omegas are more physically vulnerable, and since Lin Xinyi was already sick, it would be a real problem if Liu Lingyan got sick too.
When Fantuan saw Liu Lingyan return, she immediately let go of her hold on her mommy’s arm and threw herself into Liu Lingyan’s embrace. She looked curiously at her mommy, then at both her mommy and her aunt.
“Mommy, why aren’t you and Auntie wearing masks?”
“Mommy is an Omega. Her body is more fragile,” Xu Shijiu explained. She noticed the flash of sadness in her sister’s eyes and felt uncomfortable inside.
Fantuan actually wanted to stay longer in her mommy’s arms. She had missed her so much. But with her other mother around, Fantuan felt like she had to keep a little distance. She didn’t want to make her mommy unhappy by being too close to her mama.
“Where’s Xinyi?” Liu Lingyan asked, not seeing Lin Xinyi in the room.
“The doctor called her out for something, and she went with them,” Xu Shijiu replied. That was also the reason her mind had been restless the whole time.
When the doctor came earlier, he had looked very serious. That expression alone made Xu Shijiu feel uneasy.
“If you’re that worried, you should go find her,” Xu Manyue said. When it came to the relationship between Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi, she still believed there was a real chance they could reconcile. Unlike her and Liu Lingyan.
Between her and Liu Lingyan, there was truly no hope. But with Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu, the possibility was still very real. As long as both of them were willing to take the first step and face their feelings honestly.
“But…” Xu Shijiu didn’t deny her worry. That was enough for Xu Manyue to see she was starting to waver.
“She’s out there alone, with only male bodyguards. If she needs a test or a blood draw or something like that, she’ll be by herself without anyone familiar around her,” Xu Manyue added, playing up the situation.
She was actually making it all up.
Patients in VIP wards always received special care. Even if there were tests, there would be a nurse accompanying them the whole time. Xu Shijiu should have known that. She should have seen through the exaggeration.
But she didn’t.
Either she didn’t notice, or she didn’t care whether it was true. She just stood up immediately.
“I’m going now,” Xu Shijiu said, quickly leaving the room with hurried steps. Deep down, she regretted letting Lin Xinyi go off alone with the doctor.
Xu Manyue watched her leave with a faint smile in her eyes. Clearly, these two needed a little push to bring them closer together.
“Mommy, I think you should wear a mask too.”
Fantuan’s soft voice brought Xu Manyue back to the present. She looked down and saw Fantuan’s serious little face, her lips curling slightly into a smile.
“I’m an Alpha. I don’t need a mask,” Xu Manyue replied.
Fantuan did not agree. Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the same disapproval in her other mother’s expression. That gave her courage, and she spoke firmly.
“Alphas can get sick too. Mommy, please wear a mask.”
That last line was spoken with such sweet, pleading innocence that it melted Xu Manyue’s heart. She took the mask Fantuan handed her and put it on without resistance.
“Alright. I’m wearing it now.”
“That’s better,” Fantuan said, breaking into a happy smile. Her soft and adorable face made Xu Manyue want to reach out and gently poke her cheek.
But she stopped herself.
Xu Manyue glanced cautiously at Liu Lingyan and quickly withdrew her gaze. She held back the urge to touch Fantuan because Liu Lingyan was right there.
Before long, Fantuan fell asleep again, and the room became completely silent, like time had stopped.
That silence was broken when Ling Mian arrived.
She knocked and pushed open the door to the hospital room. When Liu Lingyan saw an unfamiliar Alpha, she looked confused.
“Excuse me, who are you looking for?”
“Oh my, you’re really Liu Yinghou!” Ling Mian’s eyes lit up in surprise. Then she frowned slightly and asked, “Why would Liu Yinghou be here? Isn’t this Xu Manyue’s room?”
Xu Manyue.
Liu Lingyan understood immediately. She turned and walked into the room, then looked at Xu Manyue.
“She’s here to see you.”
“Who?” Xu Manyue was standing in a spot where she couldn’t see the door and had no idea who had arrived.
“It’s me, Ling Mian.”
Ling Mian had gone to the Xu family home earlier. The old butler told her that Xu Manyue had gone to the hospital. After finding out the room number, she bought some flowers and fruit and came straight over. But the scene she walked into completely shocked her.
“You…” Xu Manyue was not expecting to see Ling Mian. “Why are you here? Who told you to come?”
“I figured it out myself.” Although Ling Mian was annoyed by Xu Manyue’s accusatory tone, what she felt even more was guilt and curiosity.
“You investigated me again,” Xu Manyue said, now truly angry. Still, she made sure not to raise her voice too loudly.
“If you have something to say, go talk outside. Fantuan just fell asleep. You’ll wake her up,” Liu Lingyan said flatly, clearly asking them to leave.
“Alright. And I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for this to happen. But don’t worry. I won’t expose anything or cause you any trouble,” Xu Manyue replied. She pressed her chest uncomfortably, and her tone was filled with genuine apology.
Liu Lingyan didn’t respond, but she noticed Xu Manyue’s action and quietly took note of it. A small seed of suspicion formed in her mind.
Once they were outside the room, Xu Manyue no longer held back her anger. She glared at Ling Mian.
“Who told you it was okay to investigate me again?”
“I was just worried. You never go out, and suddenly you’ve been gone for so long. I couldn’t help it,” Ling Mian defended herself.
“Also, what’s going on between you and Liu Yinghou? And who is that child?” Ling Mian saw that Xu Manyue’s expression had softened a little and couldn’t resist asking more questions.
Xu Manyue and Liu Lingyan had once been secretly married, and no one knew they had a child together. Both of them had tried their best to keep Fantuan out of the public eye. The rooms related to Liu Lingyan and Fantuan were strictly off limits in the Xu household. All the photos were hidden away in Xu Manyue’s private room. Ling Mian had never investigated Xu Manyue’s private life before, so she had no idea.
“As you saw, Liu Lingyan and I were once married. The child is our daughter,” Xu Manyue said plainly, without hiding anything. She figured that if she kept it a secret, Ling Mian would only get more curious and might go digging on her own.
Ling Mian stood frozen.
The senior she had always admired was already married. Not only that, but she had a daughter. And the other parent was the Alpha standing right in front of her.
After Xu Manyue finished explaining everything, she asked Ling Mian to keep it a secret. Still in shock, Ling Mian nodded blankly.
“By the way,” Xu Manyue suddenly remembered something.
“Hmm?”
“You’re still in touch with Lin Zhilin, right?” she asked.
“From time to time, yes. Why?” Ling Mian was puzzled by the sudden change in topic.
“It’s like this. Lin Xinyi has been sick and is currently in the hospital, but no one from her family has come to take care of her. I’d like you to reach out to Lin Zhilin and casually ask if she knows anything about it.” Xu Manyue had a feeling that something was off whenever Lin Xinyi mentioned her family.
At first, she thought it was just her imagination. But after learning that Lin Xinyi had been hospitalized and not a single family member had come to visit, she was sure there was a problem.
“Lin Xinyi is in the hospital? She’s sick?” Ling Mian was clearly surprised. Xu Manyue nodded with a sigh, her tone filled with helplessness and concern.
“If it hadn’t been for this accident, we might never have found out she was sick at all.”
“I’ll give Lin Zhilin a call right now,” Ling Mian said, taking out her phone.
The call connected quickly, but Lin Zhilin’s voice was impatient.
“Ling Mian, I’m busy right now. What is it?”
Ling Mian was already used to her tone and replied with a playful smile, “I have something important. I want to ask you out on a date.”
“Don’t joke around. I’m really swamped right now. Let me reach out to you another time, alright?” Lin Zhilin realized her tone had been too harsh and quickly softened her voice.
“I’m being serious this time,” Ling Mian said, now more direct. “I came to the hospital to visit a friend and saw Lin Xinyi in a hospital gown. She seems to be admitted.”
“What?” Lin Zhilin was stunned. After searching for Lin Xinyi’s whereabouts for so long, she never expected to hear about her through Ling Mian of all people.
“She’s sick? What happened to her?” she asked anxiously.
“Wait, you didn’t know? I thought your parents took her back three years ago to raise her?” Ling Mian asked, feigning surprise.
Lin Zhilin let out a long sigh. “It’s complicated. The truth is, Xinyi and my parents never got along. She’s never used any money from the Lin family. She has supported herself completely through her acting work, even paying her own tuition.”
Xu Manyue didn’t listen to the rest of the conversation. Instead, she stepped aside to call one of her subordinates, instructing them to investigate what had happened between Lin Xinyi and the Lin family.
There was clearly some conflict. Lin Xinyi wouldn’t have had such tension with her family without a reason.
Three years ago, Xu Manyue had confirmed Lin Xinyi’s biological connection to the Lin family and personally sent her back. She had been certain of their blood relation, but now she wondered what might have gone wrong.
Had she overlooked something? Had she been fooled by the Lin family’s polished appearance and so-called sincerity?
Had she unknowingly sent Lin Xinyi back to a home that was never warm or welcoming?
And now, if Lin Xinyi truly had a strained relationship with her family, would exposing her current condition to the Lins only put her in a difficult situation?
If the Lin family came to visit after hearing she was hospitalized, would that only add to Lin Xinyi’s burden?
