You Are My Omega - Chapter 82
Perhaps Fantuan could sense the presence of her family. The little girl, who had been frowning in discomfort, slowly relaxed her brows. Her tiny hand still clutched that familiar warmth, and she slept soundly.
Everyone in the room breathed a sigh of relief.
” Fantuan won’t wake up for a while. Xinyi, why don’t you let Shijiu take you back to your room so you can get some proper rest?” Liu Lingyan couldn’t bear to see Lin Xinyi looking so pale and fragile in her wheelchair. On top of that, she was still running a fever.
“I’m fine,” Lin Xinyi replied with a gentle shake of her head. She didn’t want to leave. Part of it was because she was worried about Fantuan, but more than that, it was a rare chance to spend time alone with Xu Shijiu. She didn’t want to miss this moment because of her weak body.
Xu Shijiu’s hands tightened on the wheelchair handles. The words of concern he wanted to say were swallowed back down.
Xu Manyue had expected Xu Shijiu to speak up on his own, but she hadn’t thought he could be this reserved. With a quiet sigh, she gently patted his back and turned to Lin Xinyi.
“You still have a fever. Be good and rest. Let Shijiu stay with you. As soon as Fantuan wakes up, I’ll call him right away and you can come back. Does that sound alright?”
“But…”
Lin Xinyi hesitated. The thought of being alone with Xu Shijiu made her heart stir, but would he even want to?
Before she could say anything more, Xu Shijiu pushed her wheelchair out of the room and toward the room next door. He didn’t give her a chance to object again.
Just look at her. She was already in such poor condition and still trying to act strong.
Why did such a delicate and rare Omega insist on pushing herself so hard? Why didn’t she take better care of her body?
Once she lay back in bed, Lin Xinyi finally felt her heavy body relax a little. She reached out to pull the blanket over herself, struggling slightly. Before she could manage it, a pair of hands picked up the blanket and gently tucked it around her.
She stared in surprise at Xu Shijiu’s expressionless face. His movements were so gentle that her heart trembled slightly. Maybe he still cared after all.
Xu Shijiu noticed her gaze. She was staring straight at him. But seeing her so weak and helpless made it hard for him to keep up his usual cold attitude. He reached over and pressed the call button at the side of the bed.
“What’s wrong?” Lin Xinyi asked, confused.
“You haven’t finished your IV drip,” Xu Shijiu said. He pointed to the stand holding the three bags of fluid. His eyes then fell on her bandaged hand, and he remembered how skillfully she had removed the needle earlier. The thought made his chest feel tight.
“Thank you,” Lin Xinyi whispered. She gently pressed her lips together, and the dry skin cracked slightly, causing a bit of blood to appear.
As Xu Shijiu turned to leave, Lin Xinyi, who had just started to relax, tensed up again. She quickly sat up.
“Where are you going?”
Xu Shijiu turned around and saw the panic in her eyes. His heart softened again. He pointed to the table nearby.
“I’m just getting you some water.”
“Really?” Lin Xinyi asked carefully, afraid that he might leave the moment she let her guard down.
“Really.” Xu Shijiu nodded and repeated himself in a softer tone.
He walked over to pour the water, aware of her warm gaze following his every move. When he came back to her bedside, he handed her the cup.
“Here, drink this.”
His gentle tone was something she hadn’t heard in a long time.
It nearly brought tears to her eyes. She took the cup with both hands and sipped it slowly. The temperature was perfect. Her eyes shifted to Xu Shijiu’s hand, and she noticed a small damp spot. He had tested the temperature for her.
She quickly finished the whole cup.
Just then, the nurse arrived and gently scolded her for removing the IV earlier. She reinserted the needle, gave a few brief instructions, and hurried off again.
“I want more water,” Lin Xinyi said softly to Xu Shijiu.
“I’ll get it for you,” he replied.
When she tried to ask for a third cup, Xu Shijiu took the cup from her hands before she could finish speaking.
“No more. You’re still on an IV. If you drink too much, you’ll need to use the bathroom constantly.”
“Alright,” Lin Xinyi said quietly. She was actually no longer thirsty. That first cup had already satisfied her.
Xu Shijiu set the cup on the bedside table and sat down in the chair next to her. When he looked up, Lin Xinyi was still staring at him. Her wide eyes made him feel uneasy. But seeing her lying there as a patient, he could only sigh inwardly.
“You should try to sleep,” he said.
The nurse had mentioned earlier that rest was the most important thing for her recovery. But even after all these days in the hospital, Lin Xinyi had not gotten any proper rest. Her body had been worn down to this state, yet she still refused to take it easy.
“I’m not sleepy,” Lin Xinyi said firmly. She didn’t want to sleep. She wanted to stay awake and keep this moment with him.
Xu Shijiu raised an eyebrow and said with a serious tone, “If you’re not sleepy, then I’ll leave.”
“No!” Lin Xinyi immediately changed her mind and panicked. “I am sleepy. I’ll sleep right now.”
Xu Shijiu nodded. Her eyes were wide open, which made him chuckle.
“Close your eyes,” he said.
“Okay,” she replied.
She closed her eyes right away.
At first, she wasn’t sleepy at all. But maybe it was because of Xu Shijiu’s presence. He made her feel safe. And so, with her eyes gently shut, she slowly drifted off to sleep. Somewhere in that half-awake, half-dreaming moment, she felt something cool being placed into her hand.
Xu Shijiu waited until he was sure Lin Xinyi had truly fallen asleep before daring to move.
He gently reached out to touch her hand, but was shocked by how hot it felt. Why was she still burning up?
His brows furrowed deeply, and the concern in his eyes was no longer hidden. He had thought about calling the nurse, but the IV drip had only just started. The nurse had already said it would take time for the medicine to take effect. He could only suppress his growing anxiety and wait patiently.
Earlier, when he was pushing Lin Xinyi in the wheelchair, many thoughts had crossed Xu Shijiu’s mind.
He remembered how it used to be Lin Xinyi pushing him instead. He wondered if the view she had seen back then was the same one he saw now. He thought about how Lin Xinyi had always taken care of him with such patience, calming his temper, going along with his choices.
Xu Shijiu still remembered the first time he met Lin Xinyi. He had made her cry.
Lin Xinyi was a strong Omega who rarely shed tears. Thinking about that moment now, he wondered what kind of impression he had left in her heart.
“Xu Shijiu…”
The soft murmur in her sleep stirred something deep inside him.
When he looked over, he saw that her brows had started to knit together again, as if she were having a nightmare.
He gently reached out and smoothed the lines between her brows.
He let out a quiet sigh. He could feel it clearly now. He was falling even deeper. For so long, he had tried to keep a distance between them. He had tried to push her out of his world. But now, it seemed like all that effort had meant nothing.
“What should I do with you, Lin Xinyi,” he whispered.
When Lin Xinyi woke up, her high fever had already gone down. Only a slight warmth remained. The IV drip had finished long ago, and Fantuan was already awake.
After having dinner under the supervision of the bodyguards assigned by her sister, Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi were finally allowed to visit Fantuan.
As soon as they entered the room, they saw Fantuan curled up in Xu Manyue’s arms. Her small hands were wrapped tightly around Xu Manyue’s, and her whole body looked tense and uneasy.
“What’s wrong with Fantuan? Did her fever go down?” Xu Shijiu asked. Lin Xinyi looked around and asked curiously, “Where is Sister Liu?”
“The fever only went down a little. She’s afraid I’ll leave,” Xu Manyue replied. “Sister Liu went home to get some clothes and a few things Fantuan needs.”
She gently rubbed Fantuan’s back as she spoke, trying to help her relax.
“Auntie, Auntie Lin!” Fantuan looked up excitedly when she saw them, but her arms stayed tightly wrapped around Xu Manyue. She didn’t want to let go.
“How are you feeling, Fantuan? Are you still uncomfortable?” Lin Xinyi asked softly, her heart aching as she looked at the little girl.
“Don’t worry, Auntie Lin. I’m okay,” Fantuan replied sweetly. She noticed that Lin Xinyi was wearing the same kind of hospital gown and asked with concern, “Auntie Lin, are you sick too?”
“Yes, just like you, I caught a cold and had a little fever. It’s nothing serious and I’ll be fine soon,” Lin Xinyi said warmly. She felt deeply moved. The baby she once held in her arms had now grown into a child who knew how to care for others.
“Having a cold and a fever is really uncomfortable. Auntie Lin, you need to rest well,” Fantuan said, frowning like a little adult and speaking with gentle seriousness.
“I will. Auntie Lin promises. And Fantuan needs to rest too, understand?” Lin Xinyi replied seriously, matching Fantuan’s tone.
While Fantuan and Lin Xinyi chatted, Xu Shijiu leaned close to Xu Manyue and whispered quietly, “Sister, you and Sister Liu…”
He didn’t finish the sentence, but he knew Xu Manyue would understand exactly what he meant.
“She will never accept me,” Xu Manyue replied softly in his ear.
She was the one who had brought pain to the Liu family. She was the reason their lives were torn apart. How could Liu Lingyan ever forgive her? That kind of hope was nothing but a dream.
Even if there were feelings between them, in this lifetime, they were probably never meant to be.
“Mama,” Fantuan called out as she tugged on Xu Manyue’s arm.
“What is it?” Xu Manyue’s dim eyes softened in an instant, filled with warmth and love.
Fantuan gave her a big, happy smile. But when Xu Manyue gently asked again, she simply said, “It’s nothing.”
She was just thinking that she had finally seen her mama again. Finally.
This time, when she called out “Mama,” someone was really there to answer her.
