You Are My Omega - Chapter 76
Xu Shijiu had still not finished all her paperwork. She only handled the urgent documents and then stopped working for the day. Although the secretary had heard from the elder Mr. Xu that President Xu would often lose her principles when it came to Miss Lin, she was still shocked when Xu Shijiu ended work much earlier than usual.
“Is she still in the lounge?” Xu Shijiu asked.
“Yes, President Xu,” the secretary replied with a nod. It was an obvious question, one that President Xu would normally never ask.
The lounge door was open on purpose so the secretary could keep an eye on Miss Lin. As Xu Shijiu approached, she saw Lin Xinyi asleep on the sofa, leaning against the armrest with a white blanket draped over her. Xu Shijiu raised her eyebrow and looked toward the secretary.
“The senior President Xu called earlier,” the secretary explained quickly. She felt nervous under Xu Shijiu’s quiet stare. “He said Miss Lin had just wrapped filming yesterday and flew back without resting. He figured she might fall asleep while waiting, so he told me to prepare a blanket for her.”
Xu Shijiu nodded slightly and said nothing. She stood silently at the doorway, quietly watching Lin Xinyi’s peaceful profile. She did not move closer.
The secretary glanced at her phone and spoke in a low voice.
“President Xu, the driver is already waiting downstairs. About Miss Lin…”
“Let her sleep a little longer,” Xu Shijiu said. Then she turned and walked away. Since Lin Xinyi was still resting, she decided she could get a bit more work done after all.
Her footsteps were brisk. As the secretary watched her leave, she could not help but feel that President Xu looked like she was trying to escape.
In truth, Xu Shijiu was trying to run away. She wanted to break free from the emotional prison that was Lin Xinyi. Just seeing her side profile was enough to stir feelings she could not suppress. If she stayed any longer, she was afraid she would not be able to look away. She feared she would never escape the invisible cage she had been trying to break out of for so long.
When Lin Xinyi finally woke up, it was already one in the morning. As she moved her neck slightly, a sharp pain shot through it. She winced and reached up to rub it gently, not daring to press too hard. The moment she saw the time on the clock, her drowsiness disappeared. She sat up in a hurry.
“Miss Lin, you are awake,” the secretary said at just the right moment.
Ignoring the discomfort in her neck, Lin Xinyi looked toward her and asked, “Is Xu Shijiu still working?”
Lin Xinyi had gotten used to working late into the night or even all through it. Some film crews had extremely tight schedules. More often than not, the time between appearances was too short. She was used to pushing through long hours. If it had not been for wrapping up filming yesterday and flying back right away, she would normally still be awake at this hour.
“President Xu finished her work about fifteen minutes ago. I was just about to wake you when you got up,” the secretary answered carefully. She did not tell the truth, because Xu Shijiu had told her not to mention it.
Lin Xinyi quickly sat up. She folded the blanket out of habit and placed it neatly on the sofa, then followed the secretary downstairs.
The secretary led her to the underground parking lot. Xu Shijiu had instructed her to bring Miss Lin down after she woke up. Xu Shijiu herself had already gone down ahead of them.
It was obvious that President Xu still cared deeply, yet she was trying her best to avoid getting too close. The secretary noticed the awkward distance between the two but dared not comment. She simply followed orders.
Miss Lin had hurt President Xu too deeply. The gap between them could only be repaired by Miss Lin herself.
Lin Xinyi felt nervous, but once she got in the car, she realized her anxiety was unnecessary.
Xu Shijiu had not given her any chance to get closer. Lin Xinyi sat in the front passenger seat, while Xu Shijiu remained in the back. Between them, the privacy divider had been raised. The car was now split into two completely separate spaces, and so were the people inside it.
The driver, someone Lin Xinyi was familiar with, greeted her briefly and then focused on driving. The car was silent. Yet in that silence, two hearts were full of unspoken emotion.
When they arrived at the Xu residence, the lights were still on.
Ling Mian and Xu Manyue had not gone to bed yet. As the car stopped, the two Alpha women came outside and saw clearly what was happening inside the car.
Ling Mian was surprised. She had assumed that after what had happened earlier, and seeing how worried and anxious Xu Shijiu had been, she would rush to see Lin Xinyi right away. But the scene in front of her was completely different from what she expected.
Her earlier certainty now felt like a loud slap across the face.
Xu Manyue was also surprised. But it was precisely because of Xu Shijiu’s actions that she realized Xu Shijiu would not easily accept Lin Xinyi again. Lin Xinyi still had a long way to go.
Lin Xinyi stepped out of the car, but Xu Shijiu did not.
Watching the car drive away, Lin Xinyi felt both surprised and heartbroken. She forced a smile as she turned to her sister.
“Xu Shijiu… what is she doing?”
“She has a house she often stays at,” Xu Manyue explained. “She usually goes there to sleep when she has to visit Fuantuan the next day. That place is close to Liu Lingyan’s home.”
“Xinyi, I called you several times earlier. Why didn’t you pick up?” Xu Manyue asked. She was still uneasy about what had happened earlier, but she did not show it on her face. Lin Xinyi had no idea what had just happened or how worried Xu Shijiu had been for her.
Lin Xinyi took out her phone and pressed the power button. The screen stayed black. “My phone suddenly died. Was there something urgent?”
Now that she thought about it, the secretary had looked uneasy earlier when she approached her near the stairs.
Ling Mian asked curiously, “When you got to the office, did you get to talk to Xu Shijiu?”
The question pulled Lin Xinyi out of her thoughts. Her expression dimmed. She simply shook her head, unable to say a single word. She knew everything that was happening now was the result of her own mistakes.
“Shijiu is someone who gets hurt easily. Gaining her trust again will not be easy. It will take time,” Xu Manyue said gently. Her voice held both comfort and a quiet warning.
Xu Manyue had always treated Lin Xinyi like a sister. But no matter what, she would always place Xu Shijiu first. If Lin Xinyi ever hurt Xu Shijiu again, she would not stand by and allow her to get close a second time.
“I know,” Lin Xinyi replied quietly.
How could she not know? From the very beginning, when she first got close to Xu Shijiu, she already knew how difficult it was to get her to open up. Back then, she had spent a long time gradually gaining her trust. And yet, she had been the one to shut Xu Shijiu’s heart again with her own hands.
Xu Manyue sighed inwardly. “Why don’t you just stay at the Xu residence tonight? It’s already so late. Your old room hasn’t been touched, and the housekeeper still cleans it daily. You could move in right away.”
Ling Mian, hearing the special treatment Lin Xinyi was getting, clicked her tongue in mild displeasure.
“Why don’t you ever let me stay at the Xu house overnight? Every time I drink until past midnight, you either send the driver to take me home or leave me on the living room couch.”
That kind of favoritism was a little too obvious.
“You can leave right now if you like,” Xu Manyue replied with a soft chuckle. Ling Mian might not be a threat, but at the end of the day, she was someone competing for her younger sister’s attention. There was no way Xu Manyue would offer her the same kind of warmth.
Lin Xinyi declined the invitation gently.
“Manyue, I’m not in a position to stay here right now. Please just let the driver take me back to the hotel. It’s safe there. You don’t need to worry.”
Without Xu Shijiu’s forgiveness, Lin Xinyi knew she had long since lost the right to sleep under this roof.
“I see,” Xu Manyue hesitated for a moment but eventually agreed. “Alright then. I’ll have the driver take you back.”
“Thank you,” Lin Xinyi said, bowing deeply to her.
If Manyue had objected to her being around Xu Shijiu, there would be no chance at all between them. Lin Xinyi understood exactly what her sister was capable of. Even though she appeared to be resting at home, if she truly wanted to keep them apart, that was something she could accomplish easily.
To have her sister’s support now felt like an incredible stroke of luck.
After Lin Xinyi left, Ling Mian looked at Xu Manyue and let out a quiet sigh.
“Sometimes I really don’t understand you.”
Ling Mian was usually confident in her ability to read people. But Xu Manyue was different. Sometimes she felt like she could see right through her, and other times she realized she had never understood her at all. Xu Shijiu gave off that same kind of feeling.
The heads of the Xu family were clearly not ordinary people. And the once innocent younger sister raised by Xu Manyue was even more extraordinary.
“Ling Mian, sometimes you’re too confident,” Xu Manyue said with a calm smile. Her eyes carried a quiet intensity. “There are some things in life that cannot be seen clearly just by looking. There are people you think you understand, but you may not understand them at all.”
“The person you believe you see clearly may not actually be who they appear to be.”
“The human heart is the most unpredictable thing in this world. Who can truly see through it?”
Ling Mian was left speechless. She had no idea how to respond, because deep down, she knew that everything Xu Manyue had said was true. In this world, the human heart was indeed the most unpredictable of all. She often claimed she could see through people, but was that really the case?
She asked herself that question inwardly, but found no clear answer.
“Ling Mian, look at the moon tonight. It’s so full,” Xu Manyue said suddenly.
Ling Mian looked up at the sky.
“It’s almost the Mid-Autumn Festival.”
“Yes. It’s nearly Mid-Autumn.”
Xu Manyue smiled softly.
