You Are My Omega - Chapter 75
Xu Manyue’s phone call pulled Xu Shijiu back from another world.
“Sis…” Xu Shijiu had barely started when she heard her sister urgently interrupt her.
“Did Xinyi leave?”
“She did…” Xu Shijiu replied, immediately sensing something wrong in her sister’s voice. A wave of unease spread through her. “What’s wrong, what happened?”
“I forgot to give the driver clear instructions. After dropping Xinyi off at the company, he just came back. All of her luggage is still at home. The hotel she booked is pretty far from the Xu building, and it’s already so late. I don’t know how she plans to get back. Taking a taxi at this hour isn’t safe. Accidents happen all the time. I’m really worried.”
Xu Manyue sounded full of regret. She never expected the driver to simply leave after dropping Lin Xinyi off. When she and Ling Mian went for a walk in the garden and saw the driver’s car parked outside, she asked what had happened and only then realized what had gone wrong. At first, she assumed Lin Xinyi could take the same car Xu Shijiu used to go home. But the more she thought about it, the more unrealistic that sounded.
The tension between Xu Shijiu and Lin Xinyi wasn’t something a car ride could fix. Xu Shijiu was too stubborn. She might have sent Lin Xinyi away again.
“I tried calling her, but she didn’t pick up. I’m scared something’s happened. Can you check what time she left the office and look at the surveillance footage to see where she went? I just want to make sure she’s okay.”
Xu Manyue was truly panicking. If anything happened to Lin Xinyi because of her oversight, she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself.
No one could reach her. Why? Was she in danger? Did something go wrong?
Xu Shijiu felt her chest tighten with panic and worry. Everything she had told herself about staying calm and indifferent disappeared instantly. Her mind was now filled with frightening news articles about late-night taxi incidents. Her face turned pale. Cold sweat broke out on her palms. Her breathing grew shallow as fear completely took over.
She stood up, ready to head to the surveillance room immediately.
Just then, her secretary burst into the room, breathless.
“President Xu, I already pulled up the surveillance footage. Don’t worry. Miss Lin is still in the building.”
Xu Shijiu rushed to take the tablet. When she saw Lin Xinyi sitting on the steps near the stairwell, her heart finally eased. At least she was safe.
The moment she felt relief, the tension in her entire body released. Her knees weakened, and she collapsed back into her chair. Her heart pounded so loudly that it hurt. Her back was soaked in cold sweat. Her hands trembled as she held the tablet, staring at Lin Xinyi’s small figure curled up on the stairs. She was afraid to even blink, terrified that the girl on the screen might disappear the next second.
The call with her sister was still connected. When Xu Manyue heard that Lin Xinyi was safe, she finally breathed out a sigh of relief. She was about to speak again, but before she could say anything, the call was suddenly cut off.
“I’m betting Xu Shijiu is going to find Lin Xinyi now,” Ling Mian said, her tone suddenly calm again as she swirled her wine glass. She took a slow sip and smiled.
She knew that her appearance had contributed to the tension between Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu. Without her, maybe the two wouldn’t have suffered so much. Now that Lin Xinyi had returned, if there was even a chance of reconciliation, she hoped they could seize it.
“This could actually be a good thing,” Ling Mian added.
Xu Manyue gave her a sharp glare.
“A good thing? You call this a good thing?”
She wiped the anxious tears from the corners of her eyes and pressed a hand to the old injury near her heart, which ached from the emotional turmoil. She took a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart.
Her wound was dangerously close to her heart. She had barely survived it the first time. Later, she failed to rest properly, leading to infection and repeated tearing. The damage had spread to her heart. She was still undergoing treatment from traditional doctors.
If Lin Xinyi and Xu Shijiu needed time to rebuild their relationship, so be it. But if something like tonight ever happened again, Xu Manyue truly believed she would not be able to handle it.
She already carried too much. Her mother’s life, the lives of two people from the Liu family, and the suffering that had reshaped Xu Shijiu’s body and destiny. If Lin Xinyi’s life were added to that burden, Xu Manyue felt she would have no strength left to live.
“You’re right…” Ling Mian nodded. If she imagined Lin Zhiling going missing under similar circumstances, she would be in just as much of a panic.
Too bad Lin Zhiling was ignoring her completely these days.
Xu Shijiu didn’t rush out right away. She stayed seated for a long time, still trembling. The panic had hit her so hard she could barely walk.
She watched Lin Xinyi on the screen, sitting on the stairs without moving, hugging her knees like a child. She didn’t care about the dust or the cold floor.
Anger and frustration mixed with helplessness and guilt in Xu Shijiu’s chest.
She was angry that Lin Xinyi hadn’t told her anything. But she also blamed herself. Her cold attitude must have made it impossible for Lin Xinyi to speak. Her feelings were a tangled mess of relief, resentment, guilt, and something deeper she couldn’t even name.
“President Xu, should I have someone escort Miss Lin home?” the secretary asked gently.
“No,” Xu Shijiu answered immediately.
Where would they even take her? Back to the hotel? Her luggage was still at the house. From the footage, it looked like her phone battery was dead too. Without clothes or a charger, how could she stay there? She would never accept wearing a hotel bathrobe. That was not who she was.
“Then…” the secretary hesitated.
“When the driver takes me home later, I’ll bring her with me,” Xu Shijiu said softly, as if she had finally made up her mind.
It wasn’t safe for her to stay out alone. Not at this hour. Not when she had no way to protect herself.
“Should I invite Miss Lin to wait in the lounge for a bit?” the secretary offered carefully. Xu Shijiu was young, but she was not someone to make assumptions around. She was sharp and far more decisive than even the elder president. The secretary knew better than to act on her own.
After watching the video where the secretary led Lin Xinyi out of the stairwell, Xu Shijiu finally felt completely at ease. Only then was she able to return, at least temporarily, to the unfinished documents on her desk. Normally, she worked with speed and precision, but today her focus was completely off.
It was clear now just how much Lin Xinyi, an Omega, truly affected her.
Lin Xinyi hadn’t expected the secretary’s arrival. She had fled in panic and ended up hiding in the dim stairwell. Although the space was somewhat sheltered, the lingering fear from what she had just gone through made the darkness feel even heavier. Even if she cried, at least no one would see it.
After confirming several times that it was Xu Shijiu herself who had asked her to return to the Xu residence, Lin Xinyi finally followed the secretary to the lounge.
“Thank you for knocking on the door earlier,” Lin Xinyi said sincerely. If the secretary hadn’t knocked, she might have lost her nerve and left without looking back.
“You’re welcome, Miss Lin. Please drink some warm water to help you feel better,” the secretary replied with a kind smile, handing her a cup. She was simply following President Xu’s instructions, creating just the right level of warmth and comfort.
Lin Xinyi took the cup in both hands and thanked her again, then began sipping slowly and carefully.
The secretary had seen Lin Xinyi a few times three years ago. Watching her now, she silently admired her beauty and charm. No wonder President Xu had remained distant from every other admirer over the past three years. After experiencing Lin Xinyi’s presence and grace, what other Omega could possibly compare?
After some hesitation, Lin Xinyi finally asked carefully, “Earlier, I smelled an Omega’s pheromones. Was something wrong?”
The secretary had been waiting for this question. She calmly slipped into the performance she had rehearsed many times. First, she widened her eyes in slight surprise, then pretended to suddenly remember something and replied casually, “Oh, you must mean Yi Lu. She’s also an Omega.”
That simple explanation was all she offered.
Omega. Yi Lu.
Lin Xinyi felt alarm bells going off in her head. She clenched her hands nervously. “Yi Lu. Is she an artist under the Xu Corporation?”
“Yes. She’s actually quite famous in the entertainment industry right now. You could say she’s a rising star,” the secretary nodded seriously.
“Was she discovered by one of the company’s talent scouts?” Lin Xinyi asked. A strange instinct told her that the relationship between Xu Shijiu and this Omega named Yi Lu was far more complicated than it seemed.
“Not really,” the secretary replied, shaking her head as if thinking back. “I think it was Yi Lu’s father who personally asked President Xu and the elder President Xu for help. They agreed and went to sign her themselves.”
“Are she and Xu Shijiu close?” Lin Xinyi asked, her palms now damp with sweat.
Most Omegas are very protective of themselves, yet Yi Lu had removed her pheromone blocker patch when she went to see Xu Shijiu. That alone showed how much she trusted her. Or perhaps Yi Lu had done it on purpose. What was even more troubling was that Xu Shijiu hadn’t stopped her. That kind of tolerance suggested that their relationship was far from simple.
The secretary stayed silent for a moment, frowning slightly. “I don’t really know. That’s something you’d probably have to ask President Xu yourself.”
How could she not know? It didn’t seem possible. Every time Yi Lu came looking for President Xu, she would clearly say they had been childhood friends and shared a deep bond. Even if Lin Xinyi didn’t want to hear it, the words still reached her ears. But this part of the story was something she would have to ask Xu Shijiu about directly.
